B9180 PhotoSmart Maintenance (Carriage, NEDD, Spit and Wipe Tray, Printheads)

Thank you for the opportunity for expert advice.  My B9180 is model is Q5734a produced 02/17/09.  I am pleased to say that it still prints beautifully.  However, all is not well in Photosmart land.  Problems started this summer.  Regrettably, I hadn't printed for a year.  Upon printing this summer, I received a carriage obstruction error.  I resolved this problem by cleaning the carriage rail and lubricating with 20 weight oil (sound good to you??).   Also, my yellow/magenta printhead has gone to fair status.
This caused me to do an extensive search of the web for maintenance info.  And suprise, I learned about two parts called the NEDD and the Spit and Wipe Tray.  My NEDD was covered in ink and my trays were filled to the top with dried ink.  I cleaned the NEDD per you instructions.  I would note that it has a corroded appearance (the right side next to the tray somewhat shiny but, the left looks as if it has lost its chrome plating).  I cleaned times two and performed the NEDD dagnostic times two.  First diagnostic stated BAD and 6400 failed nozzles but, second diagnostic came up perfect.  Therefore the questions are:  will the NEDD function properly if it is corroded but clean and if the diagnostic can be trusted (zero failed nozzles) then why do I still have a fair staus on a printhead?
On to the spit and wipe tray.  I have read on the web a person showing a nicely cleaned tray.  I would love to do this myself but, I wouldn't do that without a service manual.  At his point I have to let out a small emotional outburst.  Please, please, please send me a service manual for this product.  Alternately, I will pay for one.  The user manual is paternalistic garbage that essentially says all you have to do is wipe the outside of the machine with a damp cloth.
Back to business.  I have put small quatities of water onto the sponges and poked at them with a Q-Tip.  This seemed to have a good result.  The noise level of the machine seeemed to decrease (I assume this helped clean a suction tube).  Questions as to the Spit and Wipe Tray are: 1)  where should the sponges sit relative to the platic squares on top, 2) a suggestion on how to easily clean the tray, 3) is putting water on the sponges a good idea?  Wiil the excess water evaporate once in the waste tank?  How much water (or other solvent???)  should I use.
Back to the print head.  I know your suggestion is to clean the heads with distilled water.   However, is it possible to use another solvent?   Of course, as stated before, I don't know what to trust,  the software versus the NEDD diagnostic as compared to the beautiful prints.  And in closing, once more, please make a service manual available.
Thanks,
Ron G

I am not an expert with the Photosmart B9180, but I would recommend *not* using solvents as these could cause issues with the printheads and/or plumbing.

  • Photosmart 5515 carriage jamming. Grating noise when switched on

When I switch on my Photosmart 5515 the carriage moves over to the right as usual trhen a loud noise of slipping cogs occurs and the carriage jams.
What appears to be happening is that the little doofus that wipes the printhead moves forward as it should but whatever should be telling it that it's gone far enough doesn't seem to be doing so.
I can't see any sensor at the front so I assume it must be under the back where the motors are.
I'd rather not take it apart any further unless I have to. There a lot of precarious looking springs and things under there and I reckon my chances of getting them back on are remote if I dislodge them
Has anyone seen this problem who could tell me what the likely cause is?

Hello Jerakeen, and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I see you are getting jams and grinding noises in the carriage path.  I would like to try and help.
I would first suggest performing a power reset.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I would also recommend following the steps in this document on a 'Carriage Jam' Message Displays on the Control Panel.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • HP B9180 Photosmart Pro Printer - Specialty Media Tray Not Working

    HP B9180 PHOTOSMART PRO PRINTER
    SPECIALTY MEDIA TRAY PROBLEM
I’ve had my HP B9180 Photosmart Pro Printer for about 2-1/2 years. My computer operating system is Windows XP (with up-to-date service packs) on a Dell XPS PC. The printer is connected directly to the computer via a USB port. It is not connected to a network router. The printer stays on continuously, is very clean & dust free and kept covered when not in use. I use the specialty media tray almost exclusively for loading the larger/heavier media. The specialty media tray suddenly stopped working recently but all other printer operations continue to function properly.
When the tray is lowered, NOTHING HAPPENS. The printhead assembly does not raise up to prepare for loading the media and there is no sound, no grinding, etc. The printer screen does not change to instruct me to load the media and there are no error messages. It just continues to read “READY”.
I have examined the tray and it still lowers and raises nice & smooth. The guide grooves the tray rides on are clean & unobstructed. Nothing appears to be broken on the tray or in the grooves. There is a small plastic arm at the bottom of the outer left guide groove that I thought may start (?) the activation process of the printheads when the lowered tray rests on it. This arm is spring-loaded and appears to be working freely with no binding. Manual operation (with my finger) of the arm does not activate anything.
Early on, when the problem first started, I tried leaving the tray lowered and on two occasions, after leaving it lowered for as much as a couple of hours, it started working on its own. Since then, I have been unable to make it work at all.
    I have tried:
Turning the printer off for several minutes, then back on.
Opening all doors to check for jams or anything unusual.
Lowering and raising the specialty media tray multiple times.
Using main tray (hoping it would maybe vibrate it into working).
Turning the printer off, unplugging everything for up to 10 minutes.
Downloaded & ran the HP Hardware Diagnostic Utility (Passed).
Downloaded & ran the HP Print Diagnostic Utility, v4.1 (Passed).
Checked printer updates. Firmware & updates are OK.
Posted on the HP Support Forum for assistance (no response).
I did not run the HP Home Network Diagnostic Utility because I do not have the printer connected to my network router. It is directly connected to my computer via a USB port.
This problem has come up on the HP Support Forum a few times but I don’t believe there has been a response. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I just installed or used the same specification of Printer you mentioned above in fact all you need do is to first update your macbook pro afterwards connect your printer to your mac it will ask you if you want to download software for the printer click yes and in two minutes follow the steps and you're done. You don't need the driver nor do you need to download from an external source.
    I hope this helps.

  • IPhone 5c keeps turning on passcode lock without doing anything!  We don't want to have to plug it on and wipe it again (all since iOS 7.1 update)

Basically my sister updated her iPhone 5c to iOS 7.1, before this she has a passcode on it,
She then took the passcode off, after the 7.1 update. Yesterday it randomly put a passcode back on so she tried the ones she had used before and the usual 1,2,3,4,, 0000 ect. But nothing worked, so aft being locked out for 2 hours she had to plug it into the computer and wipe it,
So after setting the phone back up with no passcode, this morning it happened again, we have tried the usual numbers again, and tried resetting it (so turning it off and on, and holding the lock and home screens to reset) now there is no point blanking her phone again if it's just going to happen again later, and I have had to surrender my iPhone to her temporarily (which I have never had a passcode on, and hasn't had any issues)!
What can we do, beyond traveling an hour to take it back to apple!

The passcode is coming from the backup file. She must not have removed it as was thought. You will either have to restore the phone as new, or restore to a backup file before the passcode was added. By the way, is this an employer provided phone? If it is, the passcode requirement may be a policy they've implemented.

    Hi Gary,
Unfortunately, it sounds like the hardware has failed. I can't recommend any other solutions that you haven't already tried. The next step would be to service or replace your printer.
    Service:
Determine if your product is in warranty or out of warranty. If you need help determining your product’s warranty status, go to HP’s Warranty Check Tool .
If your product is in warranty , contact HP support.
If your product is out of warranty , click here to view additional printer support options starting as low as $20.
    Replacement:
Consider taking advantage of HP's Trade-In program: http://www.hp.com/united-states/tradein/home_flash.html

  • Remote Office with Location tracking and WIPS

    Hey guys,
I have a question about Cisco wireless for remote offices. My client is switching to Cisco for their wireless. The services that is going to be needed are location tracking and WIPS and data. The data part may come later and it is not approved yet. For now, it is going to be just location tracking for rogue devices etc and wIPS.
I know for data we can do Flexconnect, but for location tracking and wIPS, how are we going to deploy this? Does Flexconnect APs would be able to do LBS and wIPS services and data?
We currently have Moto APs deployed with 3 radios which is capable of LBS, wIPS, and data. Basically, the 3rd radio does the LBS and wIPS. Also, we are using the RF-Domain Manager per branch office. I am not sure if Cisco has something similar.
    Thanks

So, you could do FlexConnect for the remote offices, but RLDP (wired detection) might not work:

Domain Manager should be similar to PI:

  • How to break Veritas Volume Manager mirrors and wipe disks

I have an old Solaris 10 server that is ready to be decommissioned. I would like to go in and break the Veritas Volume Manager mirrors and still be able to go in and wipe each of the two internal disks by using dd or something similar. Below is my Veritas Vol. Mgr. layout. I want to wipe the disks clean as to remove any company proprietary information prior to releasing the system.
Note: I will be logged into a remote console session to perform these actions as the system is in a datacenter and is located in a rack which does not have a monitor.

  • Reconcilation BOM and WIP to GL

    Hi,
Can any one of you please tell me how to reconcile BOM and WIP to GL
    Regards
    Swetha

Nothing flows directly from BOM to GL.
The work order requirements are created based on the BOM.
When the work order transactions are done (such as wip component issue, wip completion, backflush etc.), records are created in mtl_material_transactions.
Then at month end (or several times during the month), you transfer transactions to GL (either in Summary or in Detail based on the setup on the Organization parameters screen).
That creates records in the GL Interface table.
Then you run the Journal Import program. That actually posts the entries to the GL.
    See http://docs.oracle.com/cd/A60725_05/html/comnls/us/cst/invmfg01.htm for some overview.
    Hope this helps,

  • Hp photosmart 7150 only prints black and white with mac

My hp photosmart 7150 only prints black and white with mac.  I have tried installing and uninstalling, installing drivers, but no change.

    Hi,
You did not mentioned your Mac OS X version, however I assume you have one of the latest versions.
The Photosmart 7150 is not supported on Mac OS X v10.6, v10.7, v10.8 or v10.9 and therefore it is more than likely that there are no drivers for your OS and the used Generic Driver only provide B&W printing.
Although it is not officially supported you may check 3rd party solutions such as the 3rd party HP-IJS print drivers which list your printer as supported.
Be sure to install any of the 3 required downloads, then click the plus sign under Printers & Scanners, click the Use drop down and click on Select Printer Software.
Search for your printer model form the list and select the driver, I believe that may work:
    http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/macosx/hpijs
Although it only list up to 10.8 (Mountain Lion) it should also work on Mavericks from my experience.
    Hope that may help,

  • I have a photosmart plus b210 e print and when I print with a black back ground I get lines

I have a photosmart plus b210 e print and when I print  with a black back ground I get lines.  What can I do to eliminate the
    lines in the photo
    Thank You

    Hey appollus,
Do you get these lines only when printing with ePrint? If not, it sounds like a printhead issue. Here are the steps to fix the issue.
    1. Go to the setup menu on the printers front screen.
    2. Go to tools.
    3. Go to clean printhead
You may need to do this a few times to completely remove the lines in the print.
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.
If I have resolved your issue, feel free to provide Kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided.

  • When copying raw files from Extreme IV card to hardrive, finder copies a few files then exits task and wipes the card clean of all images.

When copying raw files from Extreme IV card to hardrive, finder copies a few files then exits task and wipes the card clean of all images.  Have tried new card and card-reader to no avail.  Have done this many times on other macs with no problems.
Can edit files off the card, in CameraRaw, prior to 'copying' them, ie can 'save as' to the hard drive, so files seem okay on card, before I try to copy them using copy and paste.
Running OS 10.8.3 on a new macbook pro.

    Rita,
The process for determining what is causing the files to be corrupt can be a tedious one depending on the following:
    1. Can you review the images on your camera's LCD screen without problems? If not then the problem is most probably either a corrupted/faulty memory card or a faulty camera. If this is the case then your best bet at recovery (of sorts) is to use a program such as BrezzeBrowser from BreezeSys to extract the embedded jpeg versions of the corrupted RAW files from within each RAW file. Chances are, you won't manage to actually repair the corrupted RAW file but the jpegs are better than nothing.
    2. If the images review ok on your camera but are corrupted when viewing on your computer and there seems to be no other problem with other files on your computer then it may be either a faulty card reader or usb/firewire cable between the card reader and the computer that is the culprit. Try the card reader with a different cable and also try a different card reader to determine the cause of the corruption.
    3. If your symptoms are that you get different files corrupting over time when viewing them on your computer then the problem may be any one of either failing RAM memory, hard disk, hard disk controller or IDE/SATA hard disk cables. This is where the troubleshooting can be pretty tedious testing then eliminating each item from the list of suspicious pieces of hardware. Try the card and card reader on an altogether different computer to see if the files transfer correctly to that computer. If so then the problem lies with your computer hardware. If you haven't already done so at this stage, backup all your important data immediately (hopefully you keep backs anyway).
    Hope this helps.
