Back from Vacation - Quicksilver won't start

We left for vacation six days ago, so I shut off the computer and unplugged all peripherals (Apple monitor, printer, DSL modem).
Last night I plugged everything back in, and this morning I ried to power up the comuter. The light on the Apple monitor is on, and when I press the power button on the front of the computer it lights up, but the computer will not boot up.
Any ideas?
TIA.

Hi Paul,
Welcome to the Discussions.
It could be the battery on the logic board. They're good for about 5 years. Take it out and test it. It's a 3.6V lithium ion 1/2AA. Radio Shack sells them for about $14.
Resetting the PMU might get you going. There's a very small button near the battery that will reset it. The following guide was written for older G4s but applies to the Quicksilver.

  • Quicksilver won't start up from 10.3 install disks...sort of

I have a Quicksilver/Dual 800/1.5G RAM/OS 10.2.8 that I am trying to upgrade to 10.3. I have the retail install disks, but when I try to restart from them, the computer whirs and spins, the power light comes on...then nothing happens. Nothing ever comes up on the screen, good or bad. I need to upgrade to install some newer software. There are supposedly no firmware updates needed. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Chris:
I just had the same issue on my son's MacBook. As long as you have a wired keyboard, the following will work.
    1. Shut down the computer if it is on.
    2. Press the power button to start the computer.
    3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the "s" key for single-user mode.
    4. Type mount -uw / (then press the Return Key) wait for next line to appear with # root/
(there is a space between t and - and another space between w and /)
    5. Then Type "passwd" (without quotation marks then press the Return Key)
    6. Enter new password (this will be for the root user account) (watch your fingers when you type because it doesn't show what you are typing, then hit the Return Key after you type it.
It will prompt you to retype the new password again, so retype it again and then hit the Return Key) wait for next line to appear...
    7. Then Type "reboot" (without the quotes and hit the Return Key)
after the computer restarts and comes up with the login window....
    8. Login with any of your usernames just to get the desktop up.
    9. After desktop comes up choose System Preferences, then choose accounts. Unlock if you have to and using the username: root ..... and the password you just setup in the single user mode You now should be able to make users including your existing user account an admin.
After you log back in under your real account, it is advisable to deactivate the root user account. To do this,
    1. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
    2. From the Go menu, choose Utilities.
    3. Open Directory Utility.
    4. Click the lock in the Directory Utility window if you need to unlock the utility.
    5. Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
    6. Choose Disable Root User from the Edit menu.
    Hope this helps.

  • Quicksilver won't start after crash

Intermediate Mac user with a significant problem...
So, my Quicksilver started having problems a few weeks ago - when I would startup, I would get a message saying I needed to restart the computer. After finally getting the Leopard install disk back (we had a family pack), I diagnosed and fixed the problem (it was an invalid leaf count, whatever that means). The computer ran fine again for a day or so, but soon after I sent the install disk away to my brother-in-law, I'd get the folder with the question mark when I tried to startup. After trying to hook it up to my MacBook as a Firewire drive or to use the Disk Utility that came with the MacBook install DVD for a few days, now the computer won't startup at all.
I tried zapping the PRAM but had no luck. At the Apple Store, they told me that the power supply was dead and that they no longer supported computers this old. I wouldn't be too hurt if the computer were dead (I was getting ready to replace it anyway), but I'd like to get the data without paying for a data recovery service if possible. So, here are my basic questions:
    1. I made a Time Machine backup to an external drive when I upgraded to Leopard, but my External Drive filled up and I stopped the backup. However, I still have the Backups.backupdb folder on my External Drive. Is there anyway to extract the files to the External Drive or to my MacBook? (I also posted this in the Time Machine forum, but have not heard a reply yet).
    2. What options do I have for recovering the data? Keep in mind that my power supply seems defunct. I discussed some options with my brother-in-law and he suggested buying an external partition for the drive (or something) - is this a good idea or is there a better solution out there?

You may have one or more fans that are not working. My Quicksilver recently would not start up. Two of three internal fans were dead (CPU fan and PSU fan). With only the case fan left to cool everything, the processors quickly became too hot to function reliably. Replacing both fans got the machine working again.
If the Apple employee who diagnosed your machine saw that the PSU fan was not turning, that may have led to a diagnosis that a new PSU was needed. But the PSU fan can be removed and replaced on its own, for perhaps 10% the cost of a new PSU.

  • Urgent help please - iDVD from iLife 09 - Won't start normal, can't quit ..

    All,
I was in the middle of a job and things were going fine. Incorporating some changes to template supplied. I really don't know what I did, but now I cannot exit iDVD. Each attempt to quit ends with a "unexpected end", and any start of iDVD starts with the last one there. I can drag and drop existing projects but can't start a new one. I've tried deleting prefs file - didn't help. I did the "boot the OS X install and fix permissions" ... still nothing. It just seems stuck with this inability to exit cleanly. Do I need to reinstall, if so, what's the best way? Should I delete the one I have and install from iLife '09 disk?
I'm right in the middle of trying to finish up a job.. Thanks in advance!!

Sounds like you have adequate boot volume space. What I would try first is to copy all video assets for iDvd to the boot volume since iDvd likes things where it can easily find them. Then I'd eject the 3rd party ext. HHD. Pro apps give you a bit more latitude in this regard but iDvd tends to be picky about what it will or will not use (at least when compared to apple's pro apps / DVDSP).
Btw, you did properly format the ext. firewire HDD with apple's disc utility, did you not?

Location of the assets has never been a problem and isn't here (nor should it be, else Apple wouldn't give us the ability to put projects elsewhere) .
It can work with every bit of the asset if I drop the project file onto the dock icon. I also have and use Final Cut Studio Pro so I'm well aware of its capabilities. All drives, eSATA, FW800, and USB are formatted correctly for Intel based Mac.
I hooked up the backup system drive, copied the plist from there, and renames all the DVDPROJ files so iDVD could not find them. A bit Draconian, but so far it is letting me back in normally, and exit normally. I'll have to retrace the steps, but as long as it holds hopefully I won't hit it again.
Interestingly, after my first attempt at deleting the prefs file, iDVD did not generate a new one, which was odd. So hopefully I'm back to a solid starting point.
On a side note, is there ANYWAY at all to add additional font sizes to the drop down list for text? I know in earlier versions there were sliders that allowed for font sizes to be changed. There are a few places on this project (4:3) where I'd like to keep things in bounds for SD NTSC output, but have text a bit larger.
    Thanks again...

  • MacBook won't wake from sleep.  Won't start.

Posting this as an answer to people searching for what I searched for. Now don't do this without doing the SMC reset, etc. first. I have a macbook that my wife let totally run down on the batteries. It went to sleep. She turned it on, and it didn't make it back up before the battery went dead. It was in a state where it would not read the keyboard at all, so all the suggestions from apple to take the battery out, hold the power key down, boot holding various keys, etc. were of no use. Try all of these other things first! I bet this is a one in a million state.
Anyway, since the machine was trapped in a place in the "boot" sequence where it wouldn't read the keyboard, and draining the power didn't help, it just kept indicating sleep and wouldn't start, I was pretty dismayed. Before sending it back to Apple, I figured I had nothing to lose. So, I took out the memory cards. (Again, don't do this if you're not comfortable with the procedure. I had installed this memory, so I was. Plugged in, and tried to power up without any RAM. (Failed, of course.) Unplugged, put RAM back in, and Voila! Happy Mac. Apparently changing the basic hardware configuration ticked off the started sequence enough to realize that something was wrong, so it started over again where it should be.
Hope this helps a desperate person whose wife's mac is in a coma. Funny thing about macs, she was acting like a pet had died. Never got that upset about her gateway.
If there's a question here, it's : Anyone else ever seen anything like this? My guess as to what happened came from reading MAC OSX, a systems approach. Any clever folks out there who want to correct or comment on my diagnosis?

Hey, I know its an old post but I dont find any information on internet about this problem and it seems like you are the only one who posted this so are you still having this problem?

  • Bringing PB back from death - where do I start with OS install?

My Powerbook died about a year ago and I replaced it with a MacBook. The hard drive went bad in rather spectacular fashion (crunching sounds, etc.) and I just chucked it in a box and didn't give it another though. Now, my child is in need of a computer of his own and I'm attempting to rehab this thing for his use.
I've ordered a 40GB HD and 1GB RAM that I intend to install myself (a little panicked about the actual installation as well). I've never started from an empty drive like this. I'm assuming that after I install the HD and get the thing back together, that I boot from the OS install CD and just... well, install. It should be that easy, right? I hope.
Do I need to use Disk Utility to format the drive first? I bought a Seagate drive from macsales.com. Also, I do have the family pack Leopard disk, so I'll be able to install Leopard on this machine as well, but should I start with the original OS install disks that came with the Powerbook and then upgrade to Leopard or should I just start with the Leopard disks and the clean hard drive?
    Thanks,
    Manda

    Manda:
You did not say exactly which PowerBook G4 you have, but even the 867 MB will support Leopard.
You will find directions for installing the Hard Disk Drive at ifixit guides. It is a very intensive task, and requires patience and concentration. However, if you can use a screwdriver and work with painstaking care, you can do it. While you have the 'Book disassembled you can install the RAM. Here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx 6 screw driver is critical.
    • I use small medicine cups one for each step. I nest them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc.
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Use needle nose pliers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so are not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.
After you have installed the HDD you do, indeed, will need to format it before you can install. Here are step by step directions for formatting and installation. (Note: I have not personally installed Leopard, but the process should not be too different).
Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one. See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD.)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Optional: (Select the sub-volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Click OK.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install X11 (Tiger) BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
    Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
    After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    Connect to Internet.
Go to Apple Menu > Software Update.
    Install all updates.
    Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
+should I start with the original OS install disks that came with the Powerbook and then upgrade to Leopard or should I just start with the Leopard disks and the clean hard drive?+
If you have no data to save from the HDD, you can just go ahead and boot directly from the Leopart Install disk and perform the partition/formatting and the installation. The one situation in which you may want to begin with the PowerBook's install disk it if you want to have the iLife suite. The Retail Version does not include iLife (iTunes, iPhoto etc.). However, it will be on your PowerBook install disk. So you can install that first, then use the Upgrade or Archive and Install option. You will then need to run Software update afterwards.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Cheers

  • G4 Quicksilver won't start but light come on

I have had this problem on a Quicksilver that I recently acquired: It worked fine for some days, but today when pressing the start button, the led would come on (while pressing), but the computer wouldn't boot. No sound at all. Finally it booted after I reset the Cuda. Is that a sign that something is going wrong, power supply or else?

    Hi John,
Should I understand that an external surge protector (I use one) kinda shot cricuits the battery when the computer is turned off but still plugged on power? ... Or only when it is unplugged from the wall but still connected to the surge protector? That's an interesting information, I have to get it right. Thanks!

  • G4 Quicksilver Won't Start (Sometimes)

Hi–I have a G4 Quicksilver, Dual 800 MHZ. Bought it refurbished, have had it since 2003. Starting abruptly last night, when I attempted to start the computer, it did this:
chime, apple screen, shut off. I tried repeatedly to start it up, disconnected SCSI drives, peripherals, no dice. Eventually, it started up as normal a few times, but it continues to be very intermittent. Like 1 out of 10 times it starts up normally. Once it's running, it stays on, acts normally.
I was able to start from an OS disk, disk utility reports no problems with the startup drive. No major changes to the machine recently. Power supply? Little purple battery? Any ideas out there? I need help... my local mac guy seems to think that it's the start up drive beginning to fail. I feel like it's the power supply.

    MONKEY-!
I think you are helping me with mine while posting:
    Heres my problem-

  • G4 quicksilver won't start after disconnecting for 10 days.

Wemt on holiday for 10 days. Disconnected the mac from the wall. Just got back to find the start up button glows for a couple of seconds then dies. Is there a battery or something that has died. Any ideas?

    Resetting the Logic Board
Resetting the logic board can resolve many system problems. Whenever you have a
unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure
    before replacing any modules.
    1 Unplug the computer.
2 Press the Power On button on the front of the unit.
3 Open the side access panel.
4 Remove the battery from the logic board.
5 Wait at least 10 minutes before replacing the battery.
6 Make sure the battery is installed in the correct +/-
    direction.
7 Reassemble the computer and test the unit.
    Note:
This procedure resets the computer’s PRAM. Be sure to
check the computer’s time/date and other system parameter settings

  • AirPlay Mirroring from 10.8 Won't Start Sending Video (or Audio)

This question may have been answered, but searches for me keep coming up with people who don't have the AirPlay Mirroring icon showing up in the menu bar, which isn't the problem I'm having.
In my case, the Mac is compatible (latest-gen Air, 10.8.5), and the Apple TV (3rd gen, latest software) shows up in the list in the menu bar and Displays pref pane (as well as the Sound Output pref pane).
However, if I select the ATV, the Mac's screen resolution will change to what looks like 1080p with no corresponding response on the ATV (I have it set to conference room mode), and the right side of the menu bar and Displays pref pane both hang on a beachball for a consistent period of about 15 seconds.  After a fixed timeout, the AirPlay Mirroring request is cancelled and the Mac goes back to the default resolution and no mirroring setup.
A smiliar thing happens if I select the ATV in the Sound Output pref pane--no sound from the ATV, and the pref pane hangs on a beachball for a while before eventually switching back to the internal speakers.
The devices are both on the same WiFi network, which shouldn't be overloaded or have any interference, but it is a corporate network, so I'm assuming that there is some port or protocol being blocked that is interfering with the actual mirroring connection even though the discovery is working okay.
    My question, then, is:
    1)  Is there anything I'm overlooking that would cause this to work?
    2)  Assuming no, does anybody know what port might be blocked that would cause this behavior?  I want to know what, specifically, I'm complaining about when I go to the higher-ups in the IT department to try and get it bypassed.

  • G4 Quicksilver won't start up.

I was using my mac yesterday and I think I put it to sleep. Then during the night we had a power cut. This morning I press the power button and it (the button) lights up for as long as I hold it in, but fades out when I let go. There are no other sounds, smells or signs of life in any way. My Mac seems dead
When I felt the PSU it felt warm, but not hot, which I feel is consistent with the power being plugged in all night (apart from the 1/2 hour or so that we had the powercut).
I have searched for information on this and have tried the following things:
Checked PRAM battery for life (the writing on the battery says 3.6V - my meter reads 3.7V)
Reset the little switch next to the battery (unplugged power lead, pressed button once, did not hold in for more than about a second.)
Checked the seating of memory chips, security of all visible connections on leads, discs, etc.
I am currently leaving the power lead unplugged (as apparently this can mysteriously revive Macs with this problem).
Has anyone any suggestions or thoughts, or is it wallet opening time?
    Many thanks,

1.8 GHz Power PC Quicksilver G4 and Clickwheel iPod   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi, eamonlaser -
...after one more restart everything returned to normal so I didn't lose any settings in the end.
That's normal. Settings placed in preferences and control panes are copied to PRAM usually only at shutdown or restart. After an event which wipes PRAM (which returns it to default values), it takes a second restart before custom settings used during startup are again available from PRAM.
The loss of PRAM settings was probably caused when you pulled the battery to test it. The machine will maintain PRAM settings using line power even when the machine is off, provided it has access to live power; the battery is used only when the machine is (effectively) unplugged.
A good UPS can prevent power-loss events from placing the machine in upset.

  • Apps from Ipod Touch won't start

    Hello everyone,
Since about a day and a half I have been having problems with my Ipod Touch. All of the apps I got via the App store fail to start up. That is, they start up, the opening screen of the app quickly flashes and I am returned to the home screen. This ONLY goes for apps I installed myself, i.e. Internet, the App store itself, email and the like all work properly.
I believe it was tuesday night that I updated to the new operating system for iPod Touch, iOS 4.3.3 (I have checked and my Ipod is running on iOS 4.3.3, just not sure when I installed it...). Wednesday morning I used a few apps and they worked fine, but in the afternoon none would open anymore. I tried switching it off and on again a few times, hooked it up to iTunes and searched for updates, but nothing helped. Since all apps that are downloaded have this problem, I doubt removing and re-downloading all would work. That'd take ages too, so I hope someone can help me with how to fix this? By the way, it is thursday night as I write this, the problems have been going on for over a day now
    Thanks for the help already
    Erik

    - Try resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next download/install a free app.  Others have said that that worked.

    Hi-
Did you reset the PRAM using CommandOption+PR on startup, holding the keys until the second chime?
Will it boot to an OS X install disc, holding C while starting?
