Back in Finder

Hi,
I know that the shortcut key for back in finder is cmd + [. The problem is that my keyboard doesn'y have a [ printed anywhere and the only way I can get that character is to press alt + 8. I tried cmd + alt + 8 several times but it doesn't work to go back in Finder. It doesn't work on Safari as well.
I also tried to configure my mouse assigning a button to the "Back" action, but it also doesn't work...
Using the "Go/Back" menu option works.
Can anyone help me finding a way of using a shorcut key or a mouse configuration that works in Finder?
Thanks,
Luis

You mean ⌥8
However laudable your intentions may be to educate everyone on this point, it really doesn't seem helpful to tell people to use the ⌥ key when the standard Apple wireless keyboard sold currently does not have any key with that label on it.
Thank you for your comment.
(1) Your quote was incomplete. I wrote: "You mean ⌥8 (Option-8)".
(2) You will notice in the link you posted that the label on the respective key is "Option".
(3) You will notice that, in the past, it has often been the case that Apple used the text label on keyboards sold in the US and the ⌥ symbol on keyboards sold elsewhere, eg, France. This may or may not be the case with the "standard Apple wireless keyboard sold currently"—perhaps you can elaborate on that.
(4) The OP appears to be using a Portuguese keyboard. If you consult
<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2841>
you will notice that the Option key bears the label ⌥ in this localisation. My comments were not addressed urbi et orbi, but to this poster and his specific problem.
(5) AFAICT, Apple documentation uses "Option" and "⌥" interchangeably. Mac OS X menus use ⌥. When Apple documentation drops ⌥ and Option in favour of something else, I'll use that.
(6) If anyone has been inconvenienced by my using Apple terms and symbols when discussing Apple products, that is regrettable. I suggest, however, that the problem may lie in their failure to consult the documentation provided by Apple, rather than in my usage.

if you deleted a  device off of find my iphone.how do you get the device to start back up agian and put it back on find my iphone? becuase i have delted my dads iphone acedentily of find my iphone and it is nownot working. his phone is just staying at a black screen with a loading circle on it. i need to know how to fix this..like do i go the to apple store or the carrier store or can i fix it at home?

Try these two ways to fix the iPhone (in order).  If neither works, you would have to take it to the store.
    1.  Reset the iPhone.  Hold the on/off and home buttons togehter for about 10 seconds.  If it works, you'll get the Apple logo and then something good should happen.
    2.  Try recovery mode as described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If one of these work, you can then re-introduce the iPhone to Find My iPhone by doing Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone = "On" on the device.

  • How to go back in Finder with touch gesture?

In Snow Leopard, I could to go back in Finder with two finger swipe. (equal with Safari's backword gesture)
Now, Safari support go back by one finger swipe, but Finder does not. How can enable this?

I think there might be a bug or two in how Finder responds to gestures.
    1) Finder does not use "Natural" gestures - the above solution does enable the Forward/Backward gestures in Finder, but they work exactly opposite from Safari.  Swiping left should got forward and swiping right should go backward.
    2) Finder requires 3-finger swipes for forward/backward, but Safari uses 2-finger swipes. This is annoying because I have to train myself to use different gestures for the same functionality. And it is also a true limitation bug because I cannot have both the "3-finger drag" and the "2- or 3-finger forward/backward for Finder" gestures enabled at the same time.

  • After Update Bizarre jump back to Finder Behavior

I have always dutifully used Software Update to stay on top of things.
In some cases it has revealed problems. What a surprise.
The most recent update to 10.4.5, or the latest Security update has introduced an annoying behavior that doesnt make much sense and I wonder if anybody else has encountered it.
If I have multiple windows open (Safari, Mail, iPhoto...) after less than 30 secs. the user interface always jumps back to the Finder, no matter what I am doing. As I type this if I hesitate for more than a few seconds the keyboard wont respond because I am in the Finder again...GRRRR...irritating behavior. You then have to click on the window (Safari whatever it was you were doing) to then continue scrolling, typing whatever.
Anybody else? No its not Screen saver activating its like 15-30 sec delay and Bam back to the Finder.
I have reported this to AppleCare (mine just expired) and the case number is 60078651...the squeaky wheel gets greased if you experience the same issue use this case number to complain en masse.

    Hi, f/64.
    1. Well, you can delete the Finder preferences (see also my "Finder Issues? How to delete its preferences" FAQ) as macjack suggests, but I don't think that's the issue.
    2. It sounds like some application or background process is actually switching the focus to Finder. Since this seems to have arisen after recent updates, this makes me suspect a Startup or Login Item that has been rendered incompatible by the update. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    3. A good way to avoid such problems with updates is to follow the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ.
    4. You've not provided any information concerning your Mac itself: model, RAM, if you are using a third-party keyboard or mouse (brands of each), etc. so more details about your system would be helpful.
    5. A couple of "off the wall" ideas:
    • An errant folder action script. If you've not enabled any of these, don't worry about that.
    • Some people have experimented with installing FrontRow on Macs which did not come equipped with such via a variety of hacks posted on the Internet. This has caused some problems, including the loss of all menu extras, the icons on the right side of the menu bar, and repeated crashes of SystemUIServer, which controls menu extras.
    6. After the problem occurs, you may want to check Console for clues.
    Good luck!

  • Going back in Finder Windows doesn't go back to previews folder

    Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me. Ok, say I'm clicking a folder. I double click on a folder and when I want to go back and look for another folder, I hit the back button and rather than it return back to the folder I just double clicked, the finder window resets to the top. I then have to scroll all the way down to continue where I left off. Is there a solution for this using icon view. This is driving me nuts!!
    Please helppppppppppppppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks in advance.

    Use cmd-up arrow instead.

  • How to swipe back in finder

I can't swipe (for example back) with touchpad in finder. How it made?

Please check your trackpad settings - it is possible to have multiple gestures assigned to the three finger swipe -- it sounds like you may have the setting for Three Finger Drag checked under the Point & Click section of the Trackpad preferences.  If you apply the following Trackpad Prefrence settings you should be able to use three finger swipe in Finder:
    Trackpad>Point&Click>ThreeFingerDrag:Un-checked
Trackpad>MoreGestures>SwipeBetweenPages:Checked-Scroll left or right with three fingers

  • "Go back" in Finder

When I was still using Snow Leopard, I can use 2 fingers sliding to go back to previous page in Finder. However, I can't do it in Lion. How can I get back this function?

    1) Finder does not use "Natural" gestures - the above solution does enable the Forward/Backward gestures in Finder, but they work exactly opposite from Safari.  Swiping left should got forward and swiping right should go backward.

  • Regular Expression back-reference Find/Replace in SQL Developer 4.0

I cannot seem to get the Search/Replace functionality to use back-references with Regular Expressions in 4.0.  This worked fine in 3.0.
    Text in my editor:
    abc
    Example:
    Find: (a)(bc)
    Replace:
    \1\1\1\2
    Should result in:
    aaabc
    Instead I get:
    \1\1\1\2
This still isn't fixed in 4.0.2 - I'll try to find time to put in MOS as a bug...

You know what, I think I'm logging in a sys on the command line on the sqlplus side of the house, AHA!
    Wow, I must be tired....LOL...thanks

  • We want pinch to zoom feature back in finder..

Pinch to zoom was very useful feature and now even finder bottom image size slider doesn't work properly. I think developers forgot that function and need an update very soon...

Ya.. Oh my Godd... it's really really unbelievable !
    I need this function back!
what in the world is going on with this latest OS, even claimed to be world's most advanced!?
I was shocked enough when I realized no 4finger swipe to switch apps, and 3finger swipe to go back and forth between pages not working when you have 3finger drag enabled
now what's utterly frustrating is NO MORE PINCH TO ZOOM IN FINDER
this is like one of the most important functions in the OS, and it's gone!?
    this must come back
please fix these in the next update

  • HT5364 i will be on page then the computer switches back to finder screen

when using computer my screen keeps going back to finder

How are you using your comp?
Hold down the option key>Finder>Go>Library>Preferences.  Trash the com.apple.finder.plist file, repair permissions and restart your comp.  Please post back the results.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

If you have accidentally removed bookmarks then use "Organize > Undo" in the bookmarks manager (Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks) to get them back.
The Organize button is the first of the three buttons on the toolbar in the Library (Bookmarks Manager).<br />
That only works if you haven't closed Firefox.
If it didn't work then you can restore the bookmarks from a JSON backup.<br />
This will replace all current bookmarks and you lose bookmarks that were added since that backup was created.

  • Folders rolling back in finder view in 10.6 connected to a 10.6 server.

I have a server 10.6 with all updates and some times when i connect from 10.6.8 clients by AFP some folders roll back automatically any ideas?

By default the Windows Server 2008 will not have the Line Printer Daemon Service installed and running. With the Server 2008 configured with the Print Services role you need to select the TCP/IP Print Server (LPDSVC) service which allows computers that are using the Line Printer Remote (LPR) service to print to shared printers on this server. The Select Role Services wizard also creates an inbound TCP exception on port 515 for LPD in the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.
With this enabled you should then be able to use the LPD queue you created on the Mac's to print to the Windows shared queue. Note that the Queue Name on the Mac will be the name of the share used on Windows. A good tip is to keep the share name short and without spaces.
Note that when you type the IP followed by \HP4015, you are connecting via RPC/SMB. For Windows this is known as Point & Print and while the Mac can connect to this same queue, you cannot use the same procedure. Instead you can use the Windows icon within the Add Printer browser to browse the workgroup then the computer name. When selected you often have to enter user credentials saved on Windows to then see the printer share. When the queue creation is completed you then can print but often have to authenticate every time you print. This is why LPD is preferred. The other thing is that with SMB connections, you often cannot use the vendors driver for consumer products. But if this HP is a LaserJet that supports PostScript then there won't be the same limitation.
