Not sure if you want a 'wave' or a 'ripple'...but regardless, to my knowledge there is no transition in FCP that will do this.
My guess is that there's a way to do it in Motion, or a plug-in somewhere.
But if you wanted to try it manually in FCP...
-Determine how long you want the effect to last...say 4 seconds
-Razor your incoming clip 2 seconds from the end.
-Razor you outgoing clip 2 seconds from it's head.
-Apply a Pond Ripple (Effects/Video Filters/Distort) to each side of the transition point.
-Tweak in/out point of the Pond Ripple on the incoming clip, then reverse those parameters on the outgoing clip.
-Apply a 2sec. centered cross dissolve to the edit point.
That's just one way to skin this cat.

Get strange audio from other parts of the video when I am using transitions

In most cases when I add a transition, I get a strange piece of audio inserted during the transition. I know I can go in and manually edit this out, but is there some sort of fix to keep this from happening in the first place?

Welcome to the discussions.
Yes, that is a problem that happens sometimes, especially with the Cross-Dissolve transition. I use that one a lot, and run into this with many of my clips. I have 'fixed' it with a variety of methods including muting, putting music over it, adding audio clips recorded from the beginning of the next clip....for this one I have to delete the transition, crop the next clip, remove it to the clips pane, add back the transition and record the audio from the deleted clip using WiretapPro. Works great and actually is faster than it seems.
You might be able to get some correction by trashing iMovie's preference file; Close iMovie. Go to YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist
If you also have iMovie 8, you will see its plist as com.apple.imovie7.plist, so be sure to trash the correct one.
Drag the plist file to the trash. Reopen iMovie and see if it works properly now.

How can I reduce total time after deleting a transition

Hello there !
I recently made a quite long 1:51 minute animation with rather complex timeline.
Now, It happened that I want to delete some middle animations (at 0:18 or something) and reduce the overall video time. I am finding myself at totally loss when readjusting each transition.
When I delete the middle transition and try to pull back other transition, I can't since there are already so many of them and they wont move when they collide with each other.

Itunes remembers what u have downloaded (free and paid apps) so if u have to 'authorize' the computer again as a new computer, (u r allowed 5) itunes will just reinstall apps and app info eg saved games scores etc will be still there after restore or update.

Transitions that don't transition

Hi all,
I am working on a project on a client system running FCS and we have had some strange behaviours within the project. The most annoying is transitions such as cross dissolves that once applied sometimes work and then stop working for no logical reason. They look fine in the timeline but when u play them back the transition does not occur.
note to all: i am not a newby. also have only seen this on this one job. There have been other pref issues with job but this is frustrating. there are plenty of handles too thanks.
If you can help I would really appreciate the feedback. we have installed the software again but to no avail.

Shane's Stock Tip Mantra: If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://www.pistolerapost2.com/fcprescue and run it.
2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
3) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

I'm trying to import an imovie back into imovie from a dvd

I'm trying to import a moive into imoves froma advd. The dvd contains an imovie I created. I need it back into the computer

It can't really be done. DVD is a compressed format that doesn't lend itself to further editing. You can possibly use Handbrake or similar tools to convert the DVD to a format that can be re-imported into iMovie. But you will lose picture quality, and there's no way to get back the transitions, subtitles, etc in any editiable form.

Video Watermarks Ruining Transitions

I watched a few videos on YouTube showing how to make and add a watermark to your videos. So . . . I made a watermark and added it to a video. I dragged the watermark image across the entire video but when I play it back the transitions are gone. Can you tell me how to fix this - other than deleting the watermark?

I don't know about iMovie '08. But in iMovie '11 unfortunately you cannot mix the Cutaway and Transitions. Cutaway will block the transition. So what you have to do is 'break' the Cutaway where the watermark is now at the transition point then put another one on the other side of the transition, like this:
Make sure to pull the cutaway a bit away from the edge of the clip beneath it, keep dragging until the transition turns bright white and isn't grayed out anymore.

IMovie09 Not Holding Transitions

I am using iMovie09 and I notice that the particular movie I am working on does not hold its transitions. After I upload to YouTube, some (not all) transitions are gone and when I export to my desktop the transitions disappear. I closed out iMovie, opened it back up - transitions gone. Why is this happening and how can I repair it?
If it even matters, I also have iMovie HD6 on my system but I have not even tried to shift movies betweeen the two programs. I am working exclusively in iMovie09 until I learn iMovieHD6.
This problem is so frustrating. Last night I uploaded a movie to YouTube and when I played it back, I noticed some of the transitions were missing. When I looked back in iMovie they were missing there, too, so I am presently trying to put them back in but they keep disappearing.

The preference files for various versions of iMovie are as follows:
⇒ iMovie 3 and iMovie 4 - "com.apple.iMovie3.plist"
⇒ iMovie HD 6 - "com.apple.iMovie.plist" (I think iMovie HD [version 5] also used this file)
⇒ iMovie '08 - "com.apple.iMovie7.plist"
⇒ iMovie '09 - "com.apple.iMovie8.plist"
⇒ iMovie '11 - "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist"
As you will note, it's all very confusing! This is mainly due to version numbers not matching the release name, or no number being allocated. For example, the iMovie '09 file is labelled with iMovie8 because the version number is 8 (the last release being 8.0.6). However, for iMovie '11 it's simply iMovieApp (with the latest version being 9.0.4).
It's difficult to see the logic with the naming protocols, but bear in mind, no harm will come if you delete the wrong file as iMovie (whatever version) will rebuild the .plist file with the default settings when next opened. You can then change settings if desired in the iMovie menu item "iMovie>Preferences".

If you want to check the battery cycle, click the apple at the top left and click about this mac. Then click more info and then system report. in system report, click power on the left column and you can find the charge cycle along with information regarding the battery. Hope this helped.

Imovie 09 shutting down

Hello, like the many other frustrated souls, imo09 is shutting down when I add certain titles or share to media browser. I have tried the following from Bengt's helpful list:
- free up enough space on the internal HD (250 GB)
- removed unusable projeckts with zero kb
- repaired disk with Disk Utility, repaired permissions
- trash preference files
I am able to add one kind of title, the simplest "centered" kind, without it shutting down. When i even scroll the mouse over the other titles (not even clicking on them, for example animated titles) it shuts down.
I then tried to share my 7 min. 550 mb film with 3 centered titles to media browser, didn't work. I then erased preference files and it went through to idvd, cool. Also tried right after sharing two 20 min 1.5 GB films to media browser, all at HD size. They had 15-20 centered titles. Both went through, very cool but it shut down after it was finished. strange- why would 2 films go through to idvd no problem and the third goes through but shuts down immediately after?!?
After a week of fighting, Im happy i have 3 films in idvd, what can i do to avoid this shutting down? Using only 1 kind of title is better than nothing, but can i do something here so i can use all animated titles also?
I have not tried logging on as a new user or deleting imovie completely and reinstalling from the applications disk (not sure how to select only imovie instead of installing everything new. has something to do with selecting options....)

Hello Elikness, you are the man! My problem with imovie shutting down after adding titles is solved!
But it wasn't the titles at all!! I thought for sure it was the titles because everytime i ran the mouse over the different title options, it shut down. only centered titles were not shutting down.
Your suggestion to take one simple film projeckt and dissect it until i find the problem worked for me. Hope this helps the others who are having troubles with imov 09 adding titles. Here is what i did:
I had 4 film projeckts in my library, none more than 20 min. long with musik, transitions and only centered titles. I duplicated one of these films and removed the other 3 films from the library and put them on my desktop. I only had this duplicated film in my library as a test guinea pig. First i removed all titles, suspecting one or more of my titles as the problem. I closed imovie so it would take on the changes and erased caches and com.apple.imovie8.plist from preference files. I reopened imovie and tried to run the mouse over the title options, especially animated ones. it shut down. very confused, i took off all audio clips, closed imovie, erased caches and preference file. reopened imovie, tried titles again, it still shut down. I then took off all transitions, closed imovie, erased cahes, pref. files. it didnt shut down! i suspectd transitions was the real problem, not titles. So i put back on the musik and animated titles, no shut down!! I then put back normal transitions, no special or complicated ones. This worked for me. Now i have all 4 movies with animated titles, normal transitions and musik with no shut downs! Yippeee!
Those darn transitions were the problem for me! Especailly the water wave circle ones. Other complicated transitions also though.

IWork '08 / Keynote '08 vs. iWork '09 / Keynote '09

I'm trying to open a iWork Keynote 08 presentation with Keynote '09 and it will not open. Apple says it will and it won't. I've paid good money for these programs over the last few days and nothing is working right. I'm trying to work with these programs and it won't work. My client is counting on this presentation on the iPad - WHAT'S THE DEAL? Can someone help???? Of course, PowerPoint works without glitches and if my client didn't want to use the iPad we wouldn't use it at all!

Here again, I don't have an iPad, so I can't really test this. But a couple more options for you.
Take the Keynote file that is open in Keynote '09 and open a new presentation (again, make sure it is Keynote '09) and drag and drop the slides from the original to the new Keynote. Save the new presentation and try it. There may have been some problem with the first file that isn't allowing it to open in Keynote on the iPad.
Then next option to try is to remove all transitions, builds and make sure that all fonts that are used are supported on the iPad. Then if you can open it in Keynote on the iPad, add back in transitions and builds. I don't think that all the transitions and builds that are available in Keynote for the Mac are supported in the Keynote for iPad and I am not sure if all the same fonts are.
If neither of these work, you can post in the forum dedicated to iWorks for iPad and see if they have any other ideas.

Importing contacts from windows outlook xp into leopard contacts

I am a PC freak, 25 years experience, that now is turning total MAC, have on mac pro, one all new iMac 20" and one macbook g4.
major item holding back from transition was the inability to find a way to transport several thousand customer info, stored in outlook, using Categories as vital selecting criteria.
for some reason ??? Entourage will not import, succfully, this information from outlook. after much ado I have finally come up with a working solution.
I will only do the transiotion once, but maybe others can benefit from my findings (when I browse the forums, I spot lots of frustrated users sitting in similar situations)
So here it is:
the ONLY way (that works)to transport contact from outlook is to
open one contact
save as vCard
send as attachment in mail or put on USB stick
+
in leopard
open mail /USB stick
save vCard to folder on mac
in adressbook import vCard from (that folder)
and repeat...
Now i had these thousands contacts so I found a utility for windows (Mouse and Key recorder 6.3 at www.kratronic.com, free trial for 30 days) that, after some trimmings did the "clicking" for me, storing the generated vCards in appropiate folders (some 400 at a time, for safety)
I emailed these to my .mac mail, and they arrived well. Put them into folders on the desktop and, from adressbook (I use Danish Leopard so not totally sure of english description) I choose Import vCard.
Now comes the distress point not vCards all were imported....
Only a bleak message that not all vCards were imported not the reason!
after several trials I found out that even the content in adressbook were shoving say 437 items, and I had offered say 950 items for import, I got the full quantity shown if i simply sorted the adressbook (first name or last name first....)
then
behold all items were in the adressbook.
I dont have to worry about Entourage, Its synced with the adressbook in Leopard, Grin grin. so no need as I thought to import into Entourage.
this last feature seems not to be used / known when looking in forums, so here it is for your use.

Probably the easiest way to sync contact information would be by first exporting your contact list from Windows 7 into a vcard file or an excel type file such as a .csv file. Then, by using Blackberry Desktop Manager, import that file and load the contacts onto your device. Personally, I spent a few dollars and bought a program called Data Pilot from Susteen. Data Pilot works with all sorts of phones and devices allowing you to easily transfer contacts from one device to another. I use it to regularly backup my Tour's contact list. It was worth the money to buy that program because it saves all of the fields in the phone such as addresses, email addresses, etc. Anyways, let me know if the above works for you.

Sound loss when moving Final Cut Pro X project to Quicktime.

This is a 33 minute football highlight film with music, live sound, radio calls, title screens and transitions. The video is HD and transfers flawlessly, but the sound stops after 90 secomds amd never returns. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Have made 35 player highlight videos without an issue, but they are about 10-12 minutes long each. So, I cut the video to 20 minites to trial a shorter version, and the sound cuts out at the same spot.
The video pkays back perfectly in Final Cut Pro X. Sent it to compressor directly, and aftr 17 hours, I got a "fail" message.
Can someone help me? This video is scheduled to be shown at a banquet on Friday night, and I can't show it if I can't get it to a bluray disc

Last week I lost my audio shortly into the video.
It disappeared around the point of the first transition.
After deleting that transition and re-exporting the audio survived to what had been the second transition and so on.
After deleting all the transitions the audio was perfect.
I then put back the transitions and magically the video exported with no audio loss.
At the time someone else seemed to have the same problem so it may be some bug or glitch.
My solution was to delete all transitions and replace.

Authoring Problems - Please lend expertise!

Here is what I would like to happen:
A DVD that can transition in and out of a Main Menu to a play all that calls to a Main timeline and return back using transitions in between.
A Scene Selection Menu that can call to a Main timeline and return back using transitions in between And highlight the appropiate button. Sometimes the overlay does not show up at all until you arrow up down left or right.
I am trying to bend Encore to my will but it is not working out to well. I am an experienced Scenarist guy, but have fell in love with Encore for it's simplicity. Here's the rub: I am not able to get a menu return call to return to the Main menu that I called from. Instead it returns to the scene menu highlights button one which is the same number as the play all button on the main menu. I have programmed this 8 ways to Sunday all with different problems. But I have finally came close enough that I need one small glitch fixed and I am there.I am using transitions in and out of every menu, and there are Scene menus as well. Here is how the DVD is layed out:
I have a "Main Menu" with a play all button that links to a "Main Menu to black" timeline.{I use all timelines for my transitions so that that Return to last Menu will work if I have to use it. I would rather not use Return to last Menu because I like to transition in and out of every menu.}
"Main menu to black" timeline links to a "Chapter Playlists". This chapter playlist has every chapter of the "Main Program Timeline". The "Playlists" has the folliwng code: end action, menu overide, menu remote are all set to call to "Fade Up Main Menu" timeline, which transitions back to the main menu.
I also have a "Scene Selection Menu" that has a fade in and out of it using timelines. The "Scene Selection Menu" will act as follows when a scene is chosen: ie. Scene 3 is chosen. Scene 3 button calls to "Scene 3 to black" this fades the Scene menu to black and then calls to the chapter in the "Main Program Timline". "Scene 3 to Black" has the following code:end action-goes to chapter 3, menu overide-none, menu remote-a timline called "Black to Scene Menu" which calls to the scene menu.
Lastly, the "Main Program Timeline" I have a show with 10 chapters of video each of which have a end action that calls to "Black to Scene Menu" My idea here was that all chapters will call back to the scene menu unless they are 'overiden' by a play all scenario. The "Main Program Timeline" has the following code: end action-Black to Scene Menu, menu overide-none, menu remote-"Black to Scene Menu"

When remote is hit from the Play all button here is what happens: it goes to the "fade up from black transition to Scene menu" which is the end and menu remote command for the main timeline. I had to do this so that my scene selection menu transitions in and out would work right. You see I have all of my scene buttons from the scene menu call to a scene menu transition timeline which inturn calls to the main timeline chapter points. Each chapter point has an end action that transitions to the scene menu, and because no menus were used for transitions, the correct button still highlights. The scene menu-main timeline reacts properly and I am happy with the results, However, the play all call from the main menu is more complex due to the fact I can't find a way to overide the main timeline's menu remote settings. Chapter lists,Play lists,overides, all have been tried with different results.
****Basically, I need to go to and from the main menu with transitions and to and from the scene menu with transitions to one master timeline and be able to have the menu remote button call back to two different menus. If you came from the play all button I would like a menu return call to bring you back to the Main menu transition in timeline. And if you came from the scene selection menu a menu remote call should bring you back to the Scene menu via a transition in timeline.***
This sounds so simple but it is really prooving to be difficult. I thought Chapter Playlists would be the answer but I get line 331 errors and internal software errors when I try to use them beyond simple chores. I will try your above advice and see if it works. Any other advice is greatly appreciated.

EMERGENCY!!! HAVE A SUNDAY DEADLINE AND IMOVIE IS DRIVING ME NUTS-HELP!

OK HERE IS THE DEAL..I USE IMOIVE FOR MY BUSINESS CREATING DVD'S FOR BUSINESS AND VIDEO SCRAPBOOKING...I HAD 6.0.3 AND JUST DUMPED IT TO REINSTALL IT TO TRY TO CORRECT A GLITCH.
ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT I HAVE TO GO BACK ALL THE WAY TO 6.0 BECAUSE O1 THRU 03 ARE UPDATES! THE PROBLEM IS THAT I WENT TO APPLE AND THEY ONLY HAVE 6.0.2 AND 3 AND NOT 6.0 OR 6.01 TO COMPLETE THE SERIES OF DOWNLOADS.
I ALSO FOUND 6.0.4 THAT THEY CAME OUT WITH FOR THE ****** OFF 08 USERS BUT I INSTALLED IT AND IT DID NOT CORRET MY PROBLEM..
WHICH LEADS ME TO THE ORIGINAL ISSUE...
I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH A GLITCH THAT OCCURS WHEN LOADING PHOTOS INTO 6.0.3 THAT CAUSES THEM TO DISTORT EVEN BEFORE PUTTING IN TRANSITIONS (EXAMPLE --- PUT IN A WEDDING PHOTO OF A BRIDE AND IT LOOKS LIKE SHE HAS A BLACK EYE AND A FAT LIP!)
I THOUGHT IT WAS A TRANSITION ISSUE BECAUSE WHEN YOU PLAY IT BACK WITH TRANSITIONS THE MOVIE WOULD START WITH THE PHOTO LOOKING OK THEN JERK DISTORT IT AND THEN JERT AGAIN AND BE OK RIGHT BEFORE THE NEXT TRANSITION.. THAT IS UNTILL I SAW THE PHOTOS LOADED INTO 6.0.4 RIGHT AFTER DOWNLOADING IT...

iMovie 6.0.4 is supposed to be exactly the same as 6.0.3. Apple released it under the .4 number for download for those who purchased iLife08 and did not have any previous version of iMovie 6 on their computers.
Have you tried deleting iMovie's preference file? Go: Home(YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist
With iMovie closed, locate and drag this plist file to the trash. Reopen iMovie and see if it works properly.
If you think the problem might be with iPhoto, you can trash its plist as well: com.apple.iphoto.plist
To reinstall iMovie 6.0.3, you need to locate your original iLife 6 disks and use those to reinstall. If iLife 6 came preinstalled on your computer, you should find it on the software restore disk. You may need to download and use Pacifier to extract and reinstall iMovie 6.

Forcing animation to play to end?

Hi all
I have an animation effect that uses TranslateTransient. It plays when a mouseover event occurs and auto reverses from screen left to right and back to left. When the mouseexit event is detected on the triggering object I need to have the animation play to the end such that the image being animated finished back at its start possiton on the left of the screen. I need the animation to complete smoothly so just using pause() or stop() on the translation isn't good enough. I've tried setting the duration to 2 which works fine if the current duration count is 2 or less but no good if the cycle has been running for a while.
Is there any way to get the current cycle count or some other way of doing something like playToEnd(even)? Kind of surprised not to see such a feature.

Ah, it was less obvious than I thought. I found out that action() function in a Transition is called at the end of the forward movement, but not at the end of the backward one, when autoReverse is true! Very annoying.
Similarly, if I change the byX value of an existing transition, it doesn't appear to take the new value in account...
I found out a working solution, there might be more elegant/simple ones, but at least mine works! :-)
