Back of iMac extremely hot, temp check anyone?

Hey everyone,
I bought my iMac in Sept. of 2011.  Specs are:
2.5 GHz i5
4 GB ram
Mac OS X 10.6.8
and other specs as well...
I don't use my DVD drive a lot, but when I do, it's normally when I play The Sims 3.  I've noticed the back gets EXTREMELY hot, and lately my game keeps shutting down for reasons I cannot figure out.  If any of you know about The Sims, I've already gone through almost every troubleshooting solution I can think of, so all I'm coming up with is that my Mac is overheating.
I downloaded the iStatPro deal to monitor my temps and they are as follows:
HD: Macintosh- 53
CPU- 45
Ambient- 31
GPU Diode- 65
GPU Heatsink- 63
Mem Controller- 60
Optical Drive- 48
Power supply 2- 54
(these are the current reads about 30 min. after the game crashed, so essentially the DVD drive hasn't been used in 30 min.)
I think these are all higher than "normal" (from what I've seen on a few other posts).  Is my mac in danger of overheating?  I really don't want to damage this, it's just over a year old and I can't afford to go buy a new one or even get this fixed.  Any comments or advice is appreciated!  Thank you so much!

Your iMac works properly. Those temperatures are normal for the iMac, and games need full performance, so that's why your iMac is hot. Also, your iMac has got fans in the back

  • Imac 21.5" monitor extremely hot!

I received my new imac a few days ago and noticed that the monitor is extremely hot! I took it back to the apple store where I was told that the monitor could run as hot as 200 degrees!! The person who helped ran a diagnostics test on the monitor and everything came back ok. Is it really ok and safe for the monitor to run so hot??

Most monitors run a surface temp of 130+ degrees. This is just normal running temps though the glass shouldn't be hugely hot. Get iStat from the widget store and tell us your system temps.

  • Mdnsresponder will not quit.  Consumes above 100% CPU and kills my battery.  Also causes my fan to run constantly and my computer to get extremely hot.  Force quitting doesn't work.  It just comes back.

The mdnsresponder will not quit.  Consumes above 100% CPU and kills my battery.  Also causes my fan to run constantly and my computer to get extremely hot.  Force quitting doesn't work.  It just comes back.   I posted about this earlier and never got an answer.  Somebody, please help.
    Thanks.

mDNSResponder is a background process that runs all the time. If you kill it, it's relaunched automatically.
Please launch the Console application and select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "mDNSResponder" (without the quotes) in the search field. Post a sample of the log messages in the Console window -- only one example of each repeated message, please.

  • Does anyone Bravia XBR-55x850c gets extremely hot on the bottom surface of the TV?

Bottom surface of the X850c gets extremely hot to the touch. Does anyone have similar issue? Or maybe it's normal? Please let me know. Thanks

You need to take it in to Apple and let them take a look at it.  You have a short in your iPod Touch that needs to be repaired.

  • I've lost the "boing" when my imac starts up. Can anyone tell me how to get it back? I'm running OS 10.6.8

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC; that should do the trick.

  • Macbook pro is running extremely hot

when running graphics intensive programs (normally Second Life) my macbook pro gets extremely hot and will top 200 F.  at high temps performance begins to sufffer.  i use smcFanControl to help cool it and to track the temp.  i retruned it to apple once through Best Buy where i purchased it.  it had a nonfunctional key and at the time i had them check for the high temperatures.  it came back with a new motherboard but the high temps persisted.  this process takes 3 weeks.
are there any suggestions on how to keep it cool.  fans haven't worked for me.

You might try a cooling pad. The Mac will run hotter using graphics intensive programs, and would probably benefit from one of these. Best Buy should have a selection of these to choose from. I don't use one myself, so I don't have any specific suggestions. A Google search might be worth doing, as there are sometimes reviews.
I assume that the Mac is being used in a way that it is well-ventilated and not on a pillow or anything like that which would impede its ability to cool itself. Air needs to be able to circulate freely around it since it also uses its metal skin to radiate away the heat.
    Good luck!

  • IMac running hot; what is it DOING?

I understand many people are concerned with how hot iMacs run. I'm not too worried since I'm sure Apple has stress-tested these computers and engineered them such that they will run for many years even if you're doing 3-D renders in Death Valley. Just because a human is uncomfortable at 150 degrees doesn't mean a computer chip will stop working.
But what I don't get is what the iMac is DOING. Sometimes I will be doing a lot of intensive stuff (I check Activity Monitor frequently) and the top of my iMac will only be lukewarm, and other times I leave it idle (doing absolutely NOTHING) for an hour and I come back and the top is HOT.
This is a complete mystery to me. Has anybody been able to figure out what causes these computers to heat up?!

Coming from an electronics engineering background, I can tell you most assuredly that the heat generated inside the current iMac design enclosure is not good for the electronic components over a period of time.
There are a lot of posts here of hard drive failure, CPU, GPU and even logic board failures.
I am convinced that all are heat related issues.
Heat is the enemy of all small electronic components, period!
Component failure and component "brown-outs" can be caused both by fluctuating electric current and/or heat!
Electronic components like to operate in as cool a temperature as possible. Conputer components, at one time were cooled by either water, anti-freeze-like fluids, liquid Nitrogen, etc.
In earlier iMac models, heat was vented by having a case with that has ample venting built-into the case design.
The new iMac designs IMO, do not have enough sufficient, passive venting to vent all of the heat the iMac components generate. I feel the aluminum body conducts as much heat on the inside of the enclosure as it convects outward from the enclosure with an insufficient net reduction in overall internal temperatures.
Apple has definitely NOT done long duration stress testing of its current designs.
It refreshes its product designs every couple of years or so. So why do long-term testing on a design that will be redesigned and refreshed every few years. I believe they do not.
Apple engineers were simply concerned much more with the complete quiet operation of the iMac design than with internal heat buildup issues within the current iMac enclosure designs.
I and many other users use a software fan control to ramp up the iMac's internal fans as well as use an external fan on the backs of our iMacs to further cool them down more directly.
The result is an additonal 15% to 20% reduction in the iMacs overall running temps.
As to your main question, when running OS X applications, OS X is doing things, while the apps you are also running are doing things.  These things use CPU, GPU cycles, swapping commands and data in/out of RAM, maybe using hard drive cycles, etc. These processes work different hardware and software components of your iMac and, in turn, increase the components temperatures. Typically the CPU, GPU and hard drive ( and in the case of getting data on and off of discs, the optical drive) do heat up appreciably and heat up even more when the application tasks get more and more demanding of the Mac hardware.

  • 2012 MBP extremely hot out of bag while turned off

My mid-2012 MBP was extremely hot when I pulled it out of my bag at work this morning. I never transport it while asleep, but I was in a hurry when I was leaving, so I thought at first that perhaps I had failed to shut down completely before closing it, but upon checking the console log, it appears to have shut down at 9:34 when I turned it off and not had any activity until I booted up at 11:45. Whatever it was doing while off, it discharged approximately 50% of the battery. What kind of parties is my computer throwing in my backpack?! Has anyone else encountered this sort of behavior?

Yes, it's been running at normal temp since turning it on, but I am fairly certain that it was off. I was concerned that it was perhaps asleep, so I attempted to wake it through keyboard use prior to powering up, to no effect. Upon startup, it went through the usual boot up, rather than waking from sleep. The battery is my suspect as well, though it claims to be in reasonably good shape, status normal, it is already down to  6327 mAh capacity after a disappointing 190 charge cycles. Going to calibrate and reset SMC and then see what it has to say for itself.

  • Performance issue with brand new intel iMac extreme

I am at a loss to explain a problem I've been having and I thought I might put it out to you guys.
In September I purchased a macbook Pro (2.4 ghz, 4 GB RAM) to use in video editing with Final Cut Pro, and for the most part I've been thrilled. I use 1TB LaCie external drives connected via FW800, and perform Multiclip editing with 4-5 video streams at a time and only on occasion have dropped frames during the editing process.
In December I determined that I needed to have an additional system, and thought a 2.8Ghz Intel iMac extreme would be an excellent choice, since for the same price I could get a little more power in the processor, more hard drive space and a bigger screen to work on. When we picked up the new system in the store (The Grove Apple Store in LA), we had them upgrade the memory to 4GB.
Since day one we have had performance issues, including problems playing streaming and DVD video, severe delays mounting and unmounting drives (firewire and USB) and application images, and freezing while doing even simple tasks like printing or checking email. These problems occur even while there are no external drives are connected. I have none of these issues with the Macbook Pro, which has virtually an identical set of programs installed, and both running the same version of Leopard.
I already took the original iMac back to the store, and they exchanged it, but did not have 4GB sets of RAM in stock so they took the RAM from the original machine and put it in the new one. They said if I continued to have problems then it was most likely the RAM and I should come back when they got more in stock. I DID have the same problems with the new machine, and took it back to the Apple Store and they swapped the memory. It seemed to improve the issue, but now I'm seeing the same severe performance issues again.
All tech support can do is tell me to do a PRAM reset, which seems to improve things very temporarily (but that may be my imagination) or have me restart, which at least has the ability to make the printing of documents capable.
What I'm wondering is if it is likely that the RAM is the issue and I just got another bad batch, or if the iMac has some weird glitch that isn't present in the macbook Pro...?? Or could I have possibly gotten 2 bad systems in a row? It's extremely frustrating, and I KNOW it shouldn't be this way! It's so bad I get better performance out of my single-core G5 tower! How do I get a good working system that operates like it should? Am I better off getting another Macbook Pro? I'd rather not for several reasons...
I have xbench on both the MBP and the iMac and can provide test numbers if they'll help, as well as any other info.
Thank you so much for reading my novella of a post and also for any insight you have!
    Best,
    Travis

    Hi!
I got the same problem with my MacBook when it still was new in may 2006. It was supposed to be one of the faster Laptops around but it was soooo slow it drove me nuts. I can only advise to have a look if there is something hugging up your RAM and run some tests using these programs on your machine:
    Xbench:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10081
    MenuMeters:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10451
If they show any unusual results you might have your problem...
As to my problem with the MacBook: I did a complete re-install (writing the harddisk over with zeroes) and suddenly everything was just fine. (But be sure to back all your files before that, I learned this one the hard way.) I know it is just a standard answer, but it worked out for me this time...
Hope this helps in some ways.
    Cheers,
    Rene

  • IMac Extreme + Boot Camp + Vista SP 1

Partitioned drive using boot camp and was able to successfully install Windows Vista w/ SP 1. System came up, inserted Leopard DVD to install drivers and ever since doing so, Windows will only boot into safe mode.
Have not tried seeing if Fusion can read the partition successfully or not.
    Any ideas?

    Update on this....
identical iMacs bought at the same time (when the debuted last year). Bootcamp install of Windows Vista w/ SP 1 works like a dream. Only change up from install directions (because of failure on other machine), was that post driver install, ran Apple updater and pulled down the boot camp updates. Worked with no issue..
On second machine (which assumed identical) not so lucky. Machine would only boot into safe mode after driver install. After getting into safe mode, disabled the ATI drivers and left it boot (successfully) back to normal mode running the standard Microsoft video drivers.
Download the ATI2600 drivers from ATI and installed. Video is back and golden, but without the dual monitor support that came with the Apple drivers.
Does anyone know if its possible to extract just the ATI drivers off the Leopard DVD and give that another go? I would really like to have the dual monitor support capabilities that I had on the first machine (24" iMac Extreme with a 19" Viewsonic monitor). Only difference between the two systems is the external monitor.
    Thanks,
    macfoo

  • Battery is extremely hot to touch

I got an 8G iphone yesterday. It went through one full charge in only 4 and 1/2 hours and is extremely hot to the touch, as in it burns my ear. Is this a defective battery I should return to the Apple store or do these batteries just run hotter?
    Clueless

Do you have any mail accounts set up? The reason I ask is that the mail application has a bug that causes it to sit in some sort of loop trying to check mail.
To see if that's your issue, go into Settings\Usage. See if your EDGE data usage is extremely high.
Next... open your mail application, then hold the home butto for 10 seconds until the phone goes back to the home screen. This should kill the mail application. Once you do that, wait 5 minutes and see if the phone has cooled down. If so, recharge it and the battery should last quite a bit longer.

  • Extremely hot laptop

I have an X220 thinkpad tablet, some times my laptop gets extremely hot for no aparent reason, even when I using few basic aplications, is there any way I can fix this problem?? Thanks for you help.

    Hi again, Duriko11
This sounds like a hardware issue of sorts to me. You may wish to download and run program that can tell you the temperature of your processor, such as Core Temp, to see if your computer is getting hotter than it should. Following that test, perform a restart and run the program again to see how big the change is. Please report back here with the results so the community can advise you on where to go from there.
    Best of luck,
    Adam

  • Ipad 2 wifi charger got extremely hot plugged into a/c?

I plugged my Ipad 2 into the charger then into a/c.  I was charging my Ipad when I moved the charger and it was extremely hot to the touch. I unplugged it and am charging it from my Imac. Has anyone had this problem?

There is this page for troubleshooting the iPad and iTunes on a Mac : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1591
In terms of charging, have you tried a different charger and/or cable ? And you aren't currently using an iPhone or iPod charger with it - the iPad's charger is twice as powerful.
Have you tried a reset to see if it charges properly after it's restarted : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • I cannot log into my Facetime or iMessages. When I bought this iPad2 in November everything worked. This is extremely frustrating. Has anyone found the solution?

I cannot log into my Facetime or iMessages. When I bought this iPad2 in November everything worked. This is extremely frustrating. Has anyone found the solution?

I can still access the internet. I can still log into my iCloud. I reset my network settings and restored my iPad twice already. I tried all the stuff I could find on YouTube to include changing my DNS setting to 8.8.8.8 I don’t know why I can’t log on. I bought the iPad in Germany and it worked. When I came back to Turkey where I live it worked. I took a trip to the states in December and it worked. Now that I’m back in Turkey, I can’t even log on. For both the facetime and imessage I get a message that says “ Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again. I tried to all the help line twice and they couldn’t even help me. I just bought this in November and don’t know why it’s not working……….Help if you can. Thanks for the response.

  • Running extremely hot

Hello, I've done a search, and it seems others have posted on this. I use istat menus and enjoy it, but 185 degrees seems extremely hot for a computer. I noticed that the temperatures rose after my sl install. It used to run around 120, but now on youtube looking at videos while on ac power it really heats up. My fans do kick on, and I have it on a surface that allows plenty of venting. Any solutions? Or is that normal operating temp? Ive also noticed that my cpus are using their full capacity now. Im assuming the 64 bit upgrade with sl. It doesnt bother me they use all their power, but is that causing my extreme heat? Thanks and I look forward to using all these forums have to offer.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I too have the 3.1 and I have not experienced extreme heat, even when watching U-Tube videos. Have you checked in Activity Monitor to be sure you don't have some process running amok in the background? Right now my CPU is at 115℉ and my fans are idling at around 2000 RPM--no different than Leopard.
    Good luck!
