Back to Back PRI with MGCP Gateways

I?ve got a 3825 with T1 voice modules (RJ45)..
They are configured as MGCP managed by a set of call managers.
On Friday, I have to integrate this gateway with an old Mitel switch, which will be used during a 2 year phased migration to get calls between old and new systems? To prepare for that, I have setup the T1s back to back for testing/validation that my MGCP config is working.
I can configure those T1s as ?T1 CAS? trunks, and put a crossover cable between them, make a route pattern 3.xxxx and have the call go out one T1, and back in the other, and it works great? The problem is that there?s no caller ID information set. In the trunk configuration screens, there are fields to specify that callerID should, or should not be sent, etc, but it just doesn?t go.. I?m not terribly surprised by this, because I don?t think there?s any protocol defined for the ?plain? T1 to transfer callerID.. I guess I was just hoping that somehow, it would work! :-)
What I would REALLY like to do, is to put these two T1s in PRI mode, since I *KNOW* a PRI can send callerID, but to do that, I have to have one of the ports emulate the CO-side switch.
When configured as PRI signalled T1s, I saw a pull-down that said something like ?Protocol Side? or ?Protocol Mode? (Sorry, it?s not configured as PRI right now, so I can?t look at the verbiage), and the selections were ?Network? and ?User?, which sound to me as if it?s EXACTLY what I need, but I couldn?t get it to come up to even test? It acted as if I had a timing issue, even though I hadn?t changed any timing parameters from the T1 CAS settings that worked (One internal, one external).. I was getting intermittent amber alarms, and the trunk never came up.
Unfortunately, I can only change the configs on this thing early in the morning, because yesterday, some of the MGCP control I was doing through the CM gui actually bounced their WAN T1s that are in the same router, so now I have to be careful!!
What I would like, is to get a definitive answer to whether two MGCP controlled T1s can be back to back in a PRI signaling mode, and/or if there?s another way to get callerID across a T1 link without one end of it being the CO itself. Ultimately, it won't be a cisco-cisco crossover, but rather a cisco-mitel solution, so whatever I come up with MUST be standards based, so at least I can have something to expect the Mitel engineer to be able to do..
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Steve,
Never tried a back-to-back PRI with both routers being MGCP. I have in my lab two routers back to back with one router being edge voice gateway controlled by mgcp and the other being a pstn simulator. On the edge voice gateway the following configs exist.
controller t1 1/0
pri-group timeslots 1-24 service mgcp
ccm-manager mgcp
mgcp
mgcp call-agent
int s1/0:23
isdn switch-type
isdn incoming-voice voice
On the PSTN router (which emulates a PSTN switch)
controller t1 1/0
pri-group timeslots 1-24
int s1/0:23
isdn protocol-emulate network
isdn switch-type
isdn incoming-voice voice
This should work for back-to-back PRI pretty well.

  • Integrating Voice and Data pri with MGCP

I know this can be done with the following configuration:
    controller T1 1/1
    framing esf
    linecode b8zs
    channel-group 1 timeslots 1-12 speed 64
    pri-group timeslots 13-24
However, I cannot seem to find documentation on it on www.cisco.com. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Cisco does so many things that is not that you can find confirmation about each and any variation in configuration.
What you want to do is really nothing special and works since some 10 years now. Some people calls it "integrated T1 access"

  • Remote C2901 MGCP gateway won't register with CUCM

    Hi, all,
We have a central call manager, we are setting up a remote office with a C2901 voice gateway that has a T1 PRI, this gateway is being configured as a H.323 gateway, everything worked fine. Now I want to get SRST working such that when WAN goes down, employees can still make outbound calls and take inbound calls. I followed SRST documentations when configuring CUCM and C2901, I would say the documentations are clear and easy to follow -- only thing is there is no adequate explanation of why those commands need to be there and I can not get SRST to work.
1), First, a basic concept question, why do we need to configure "ccm-manager fallback-mgcp"? or any MGCP related configuration on C2901? how does MGCP play the role in SRST? the router is configured as a simple voice gateway, when WAN is intact, we use H.323 protocol, when WAN goes down, we still don't need MGCP ...
2), Assuming that we needed all those SRST related MGCP configuration, I would expect C2901 to register to call manager, but I could not get this device to register as a MGCP gateway, debug mgcp packets shows:
*Sep  5 16:52:47.571: MGCP Packet sent to 10.128.181.5:2427--->
    RSIP 201356931 *@voicegw-remoteoffice.local.domain MGCP 0.1
    RM: restart
    <---
*Sep  5 16:52:47.631: MGCP Packet received from 10.128.181.5:2427--->
    500 201356931
    <---
I verified the domain name is exactly the same as the name configured on CUCM, I tried multiple time toggling ip domain name on C2901 also, somehow CUCM does not like RSIP message from C2901, I don't have knowledge to get debug information from CUCM side of why CUCM does not like the MGCP message sent by C2901
3), When the communication is blocked from C2901 to central call manager (by using a simple ACL on C2901's default gateway device), I can still make the inbound call to an IP phone, which means, phones were correctly registered to C2901 when communication to call manager is broken, but I can not make outbound call, phones always get quick busy beeps, test call from C2901 itself (by using "csim start") is fine, which means dial-plan and ISDN/PRI is fine.
I believe we are just doing very very basic configuration and this is a common scenario, what could I do wrong?

You dont need the mgcp related commands if you are using H323. The commands that you need are:
    application
    global
    service alternate default
call-manager-fallback (or) telephony-service and the relevant commands under it.
Also make sure that SRST reference has been added to the DP and the phones reset after the change made. This is what tell the phone to register to the SRST gateway when the WAN is down. The IP specified in the SRST reference should match whats configured under call-manager-fallback.

  • Back-ups with and without Time Machine + G -MINI

I've got a problem with my new G - MINI 500GB running on an iMac intel 10.5.1/ 230GB. I hope someone can help me with this.
Overview of problem: I need more hard disc space and opted for an external drive. I would have got a G _Tech Q 500 gb drive but there weren't any immediately available so got the G -MINI 500. Basically this is for video and large audio files. Anyway, I plugged the new MINI in and it pretty much set itself up. Time Machine offered to do a back up of my whole system and contents, I clicked 'accept' and excluding a few items in the options pane in TM it came to around 210 GBs now on the MINI. As I need to take the Mac in for servicing a defective LCD I thought a back up of the system a good idea. I added a few other video files in a separate folder on the MINI. I then thought that was way too much- I will need more than the remaining 245 GBs for future stuff. So I wanted to get some more space back and thinking that it would work pretty much like the Mac's own hard disc and Flash USB drives I just tried to send some files from the back-up folder on the MIni to the trash in the dock. I got a message saying I couldn't trash any files included in a back-up! Kinda locked. I tried trashing one of the video files that wasn't in the system TM back-up folder and it did go to the trash but then I checked the available memory on the MINI hadn't reflected change: the size of that file wasn't added to the 'available memory'. Buff, problem.
Anyway, I then decided to trash the whole back-up folder and everything else. All went in the trash can in the dock but again, despite expecting the Mini's space to have been freed up, like any hard drive or other storage device, it hadn't been. It still counted 210 GB used up. To make sure I emptied the trash as well but again with no result.
I couldn't access the trashed files in any way now but the Mini was obviously counting them. What's going on?
So then used DisK Utility to check the MINI, same result, and then completely exasperated I just went ahead and partitioned it, that seeming the best option at the time. I got the space back but lost about 230 MG in the process. Annoying all in all. Now, I didn't want a Drive that you can't eliminate files from without having to erase the whole bl**dy disk! This seems to be the only way to get space back from the MINI's drive but it seems ludicrous. What am I doing wrong, what don't I know?
A related question is what's the difference between 'erasing' a disk and 'partitioning' one (in Disk Utility). I can't work this one out. The important question is whether there is a way to delete items from the Mini in order to get back the space they occupy. If not I should have bought something else. I thought G -Tech was supposed to be top end, it is faster than USB I'll give it that for now.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Oh and I'm posting this here because there is nothing in G Tech support about this and the post I sent to the G Tech forum goes unanswered after 2 days already - it seems like a simple question that someone should know the answer to. I want to know if I should just simply copy files to the mini and not bother with system files unless I really want to make a back up. A final question would also be: what exact folders are needed to make just a simple system back up but without all the clutter that you could reinstall from the discs anyway?
    Thanks!

If you just want to drag a few files around how about create a folder on the external drive. I know some say you shouldn't do this, but TM will still work even if there is another folder on the same volume you use for backing up with TM. In that folder you can drag whatever into it, just as you are able to do on any flash drive.
But let's revisit how TM works. I don't understand the detailed operation of TM but once it establishes the initial large copy of your Operating System, subsequent small changes are linked back to the big one, so when in the Time Machine window with all of the different backups over the past days or weeks, clicking on any one of them will show you what appears to be the same thing - the contents of your hard disk. In amongst that will be the small changes or added files.
To save it recreating by and large the same appearance of your hard disk each time it reuses the initial copy and just adds any changes. It does this by associating any newly changed or newly added file to the base copy, by using links. It is like creating a context for the file, so TM is making file X linked to folder Y which is part of application Z. If we want that file back using TM, it will know that file X has certain associations and it will put it back where it got it from.
When we drag that same file to another location, it is just that file in isolation. It has no context. The only association it has, is what we remember about it, "that photo was taken at Lucy's wedding" for instance. TM or the computer for that matter doesn't know who Lucy is, or even that she is a human being.
So in our flesh and blood reality, we see files as objects that have meaning to us, but to the computer it is all just data that has a place and a function. Time machine is a kind of illusion. It is also a Place machine by replacing files in previous places.
You say to use TM to just store "things like personal documents, music, video and other such stuff, unrelated to system back ups, seems such a fussy and tedious way to do it,..." I agree, but TM has the advantage of being able to restore any file no matter how obscure, or even restore your whole OS if you needed to. You can always retrieve any document or song or photo from TM by going into TM and having it restore that document. Not you dragging and dropping but letting it do it. The other advantage of TM is that it will keep variations of the same file as it is changed, such as various drafts as they are edited.
Maybe a more suitable backup application for you may be SuperDuper, where you can greatly control what is backs up. The disadvantage of superDuper is it won't keep older versions of something, rather make a fresh copy of that folder each time you use it.
So you have a few options, but I think if you can get used to opening TM and locating the files that it automatically saved, and telling it to restore those back to your hard drive, it may well serve your needs.

You got it with that same apple id thing. You can use different apple id's, but then they will not sync. Apple does allow as many free apple id's as you want, but they are in the business to make money.

I recently changed my apple id to a new email at the same time getting a new Iphone 5.  I cannot get all my devices back online with icloud since.  It is still showing my old email even though I changed it and logged in under the new one.  My icloud information is grayed out for the apple id.

You need to sign out completely in System Preferences (or Settings)>iCloud and then sign back in again with the new ID. Your iCloud data will disappear when you sign out but will reappear when you sign back in (may take a bit of time).

Outlook is a mail client for PC's (and Macs). It is not a type of account. Do you mean an "Exchange Account"?
If so, then re-add it. The calendar events live on the Exchange Server. The only way to get them back is to re-add the account to the phone. The contents of Exchange and IMAP accounts are not part of the 'backup' as they already exist elsewhere.

  • HT201250 Can I back up with time machine AND store additional files on the same external drive?

I just bought an external drive to move and archive some files off my iMac to free up some space. I'm being asked if I want to use the drive to back up files with Time Machine. Can I use this drive to do both? (Back up with TM AND store other files?
    Your input is appreciated.

Technically you can but it is not a very good idea at all. The reason it is a flawed idea is if the HD fails (not really if but when) you will have defeated the whole idea of backup. A failure means you will lose the data files you stored on it and it's backup! A good backup plan has at least 2 forms of backup because backups can fail too. I would strongly recommend getting at least one additional external HD and use it for storing the data files you wanted off the internal HD and use the second for a Time Machine backup drive.
Personally I have 3 external HD's attached to my computer. Disk 1 is my Time Machine backup, Disk 2 is a Bootable Clone of my internal HD and Disk 3 stores my music, photography and movie libraries.
Please read these articles, they will discuss different backup strategies and I think you will see that each suggest redundant backups.

    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Open Time Machine preferences to select this drive for use as the backup drive. Turn on Time Machine.
