Back to Mac after trying a high end PC laptop! What a joy to be back!!!

I've been a Mac user since around 1990...a long time in computer years! Anyway, as I was about to start a government job - read: PC - I thought I better switch to PC/Windows and might as well get familiar with it by having one at home. So I go and buy an ACER Ferrari, basically as good as it gets without breaking the bank. Good AMD processor, reasonable ATI X700 graphics...That was three months ago.
To cut the story short, I was profoundly unhappy with the PC...There was no more joy using my computer. Most annoying, though, was that after installing a top-notch virus/spyware program, as well as a utlities program (defrag, registery cleaner, etc...) my computer slowed down to a crawl as the darned thing just kept going through its maintenance routines constantly. There was always something to fix.
I couldn't take it after 3 months. I went and bought a 2.16Mhz MacBookPro. That afternoon, at work, colleagues were asking me to unpack the box to have a look at my new Mac laptop. Normally, I would, but not this time. I wanted to savour the experience of opening the box, discovering it...Sounds over the top? Yeah, you're right, but that's the way I felt anyway. I was shouting to myself: "FINALLY"!! I could not believe that a piece of hardware and its associated software could ellicit such emotional response from me, it's only a computer after all! To give you an idea how much I missed my Mac/OSX experience whilst I was on the "dark side", I lost very recently $1200 selling my 3 months-old PC laptop on ebay, and I didn't care, and I'm not rich.
Something else: Would you watch some Windows presentation? I know I wouldn't be interested, but I watched Steve Jobs' recent presentation at WMDC. There's something about Mac and OSX and the company's philosophy, the design... isn't it?.... I'M BACK, BABY! The joy!..

Welcome back. I am new to Mac myself but could not have said it any better how different the entire Mac experience is compared to PC. My Mac to me has just been a more creative outlet in contrast to my pron downloading, movie and music bootlegging PC box. Everything is new again which is fun.

How did you copy files to the external drive, and what files did you copy? Did you drag and drop in the Finder? Use a clone utility? What files did not successfully copy?
If you reformatted the drive as part of your install, then you won't be able to recover any files from the drive. Reverting back to (reinstalling) 10.4 will not help you.
Do you have a complete-drive backup of your old system?

Select the iPhone in the iTunes sidebar and go to the Apps tab. If the apps aren't checkmarked and set to sync there, checkmark the appropriate boxes and resync. This of course presumes that the apps are on the laptop. If not, you'll have to download them again:

Try holding down the option/alt key during a restart and see if you can see/select your boot drive there.

My iPod Touch is damaging my high-end earphones. What should I do

3 weeks ago, my Sennheiser CX-300 started to acting weirdly on the right channel. With each listening period passing by, the volume was going lower and lower, till to the point that this channel was barely audible. I tested them with different sources and I faced the fact that this problem couldn't be undone. Even if I threated them carefully during a whole year, I could just say now that they are completely dead, due to some sort of driver failure.
So, I rushed out to buy a new set on earphone and I decided to pick a higher end one, a brand new pair of Shure E4C. God I was happy, having finally sound in both of my ears. I listened to them during a 2 hours period. When I was over, I folded them back in the carrying case.
The day after, after plugging them back in my ipod, I just wanted to cry : the left channel was inaudible to a point that I needed to boost the sound to the maximum in order to ear something in the left channel. I tested them back in different sources and the same thing happened. After 3 hours of testing on different sources, I thought they were completely damaged.
So , this morning, I tested them back in my macbook and, to my suprise, they are working 100% like the first time I tried them.
Now, I'm thinking, could my ipod have some sort of voltage problem that could do such irreversible damage to an high-end earphone ? I just can't find another explanation.
Should I go to the genius bar or ask for a repair online ? I just don't know how to prove this awkward problem to a genius at the bar.
I won't be plugging my shures in this cursed ipod , that's for sure !!!! I don't want to lose $200 + over this.

I don't think it is damaging your headphones (including the CX-300), I think the headphone jack on your Touch is damaged. Headphones don't heal so if the Shure E4Cs are working on your macbook they are in working order.
Take your Touch and headphones to the Apple Store and make a Genius Bar appointment.

It sounds like you are constantly needing to restore your phone because it keeps going into recovery mode. Usually putting a device into recovery mode and restoring it can help isolate an issue to your iPhone hardware if an issue persists afterwards. I would try manually putting it into recovery mode and restoring it 1 more time:

My iphone 5 is frozen after trying to charge through my laptop.

THe phone is NOT jail broken.. all i want to do is have it return back to how it was before i started the updae version process obviously it did not take and now it is locked into plave the screen will not change.. after reboots and shut down when i turn it back on the same screeen appears the cd disc with the music note over it and the arrow pointing upwards and a picture of the small end of the charge cord that fits into the actual compute.. a really wacky hfs error is occurring.
It is crashing in backupd.
I expect there is something unusual or damaged about the drive you are trying to update. Yosemite makes some big changes to the hfs layout of the drive, and it appears that is not working.

Stocks app went back to default after updating other apps. Can I get my saved stock info back?

FINDER disappears after trying to set file sharing. What to do??

‘Finder’ dies when I try to use the GET INFO approach and set a folder to be shared. Finder seems to disappear as soon as I place a check mark in the sharing box. It does not even appear in the FORCE QUIT screen. The computer then is in a state of suspended animation, so I shut off the power. This is a repeatable failure mode.
I used Disk Utility to ‘Repair Permissions” a few times and received some arcane messages when this process was complete … warnings that the following SUID files had been modified and will not be repaired;
- System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad
- usr/bin/setregion
- System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner
- System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LPRIOMHelper
I don’t know what to make of these messages. This stuff may not even be associated with this problem ...
Anyone have any suggestions about how to proceed ??

Today I found another way to crash Finder while trying to set file sharing. Yesterday morning I made Finder disappear, putting my computer in suspended animation, by using the following process; Right click on a folder, GET INFO.>GENERAL>SHARED FOLDER. This caused a crash. I posted a query about this but have received no reply.
This afternoon I tried another approach; SYSTEM PREFERENCES>SHARING>FILE SHARING, then I dragged a folder into the Shared Folders window and dropped it. The folder did not appear in the window. Finder disappeared and my computer was frozen, as before.
So now two approaches lead to the same result; crashed Finder and no shared folder. I’m open to any suggestion about how to cure this problem.

OS X Server - Setting Up Laptops properly to synchronize when connecting back to the network, OS X Server - Setting Up Laptops properly to synchronize when connecting back to the network

I have a Mac Mini server (twin 500 gb HD) which I have had for about 2 years. Mainly I have just played around with it, but never set up the server functionality to it's full extent. I just clean installed OSx Mountan Lion (10.8) on the machine. The two HD's are separate and not in a RAID configuration.
With the release of 10.8 OSx, the server functions are now in an App you have to purchase and download. No issue for me, but I would like some assistance and guidance from the community on how to properly set up the server for my needs (or if staying with the basic OS is fine).
I have a couple of MacBooks, an iPad and two iPhones in the family, plus a remote Mac in another city. The OSx devices will be upgraded to 10.8 soon, the iOS's are up-to-date with the latest os. I also have a new Time Capsule running our network, but haven't started using it as a TM backup location (current backups are on local attached drives}
I plan to use the Mac Mini with dual HD's primarily as the location where our media resides, regardless of whether it becomes a server or stays in the base OSx. However, reading over some of the capabilities of the server ( 1 ), I'm hopefull I might be able to do more with the machine.
I'd like to be able to have a centralized user account managment via the Open Directory that the OSx Server provides. Would also like to be able to set the other "client" computers / devices to allow for synchronization back to the server when they reconnect to the network after being mobile. Also, it would be nice to set up the configuration of each of the users such that their preferences, iTunes media file locations, etc are consistent across all machines.
There may be some limitations to what I am attempting, that I am unaware of. However, if at minimum I could accomplish the account managment easily, that would be a win.
Assume I know little or nothing about domains and authentication -- not exactly true, but I don't want to assume anything with my limited knowledge. I don't mind reading detailed step-by-step manuals if they are available, but I would appreciate some guidance and wisdom to get me started.

OS X Server is an interesting beast, I am at work an IT Director in a Microsoft only environment, and am reasonably familiar with Linux/Unix having used it personally for many years.
OS X Server is, as you will likely know, a combination of various open source packages (BIND, Postfix, Dovecot, Open Directory etc.) with an Apple 'wrapper'.
I have recently got into similar situation as you, Apple gear at home (not one MS or Google product) and my old Linux server machine running Gentoo was long overdue for retirement. Let's get a Mac OS X server I said — it's based on *nix with the Mac front-end, what could be better??

My experience after installing and configuring the whole thing — Mac mini + ML OS X Server ? Personally I think that Apple has gone backwards with Lion/Mountain Lion server. Trying to make a server platform act like an end-user product is a mistake. Servers are not end user machines — by their very nature they are sophisticated and may require complex configuring. Making some lollipop front-end that is claimed to be 'simple' simply by virtue of removing (necessary) configuration options ends up fooling no-one, and frustrating pretty well everyone.
Tim Cook, if you're listening, the guys who made the changes to OS X server are on a par with the guys who made maps — sack 'em and please fix/improve OS X Server.

Phew that feels better. Having said all the above I will be sticking with ML Server — and keeping my fingers crossed.
OK my suggestions to you are:
First get some decent documentation I'm recommending the 'Apple Pro Training Series: OS X Server Essentials: Using and Supporting OS X Server on Mountain Lion' to people. You can get a Kindle edition on Amazon (I don't work for Amazon or the publisher).
Make a dedicated new Apple ID for Apple Push Notifications, don't use your personal Apple ID. I made one like '[email protected]' where 'example.com' is my domain name. Get this ready before server install and make sure you can receive incoming emails to that email address.
Make sure DNS is setup properly before installing OS X server. I have domain name and use the OS X DNS server to serve DNS in the LAN using that DNS domain. When client machines are on the Internet the DNS records point to the same server.
Make sure the server name & host name are correct & match the public DNS records. Don't have the host name registered in external servers until you get the (internal) OS X DNS server running OK.
After installing OS X server turn on DNS only first and configure it (read the book and remove the original domain based on the server name) and check that it is (basically) running OK and serving DNS (in the LAN) for your domain by checking Network Utility and finally also this command in Terminal.
sudo changeip -checkhostname
do not proceed any further unless this command returns success — don't.....
Ideally purchase and use a real (not self-signed) certificate. I just got a simple (not wildcard) certificate. Make sure that is installed and working on the server. One good test is to get the certificate installed, assign it to the web server, open the OS X web server to the Internet and then go to
http://sslchecker.com/sslchecker
and put in the URL of your server, for example if you had machine called 'server' and your domain was 'example.com' with SSL certificate of 'server.example.com' this site should give you green checkmarks for all parts of the certificate chain.
Only after the certificate is working OK proceed with turning on other services like Open Directory.
If you start turning on a few services you will quickly need RAM, my Mac mini is running an i5 and is OK with CPU but the stock 4 GB of RAM is not enough. Swap memory is already going up to 2 GB, I will likely increase the RAM to 16 GB. 8 GB could be enough but don't want to buy to that level and find out after (as there are only two memory slots in Mac mini) that it is not enough.
Read the book first... be prepared to reinstall the whole machine from scratch at least once. If something goes wrong at the beginning and one of the fundamental things gets messed up — don't bother trying to rectify it, and don't think that just re-installing Server will be OK. Wipe the whole machine including the base OS and restart from scratch.
Setup OS X Server DHCP for the LAN and point DNS (for LAN clients) to the server DNS server.
Bring up new services one by one and check they are functioning — use logs to check what is happening even if things look to be going OK.
I found for email addresses and Open Directory accounts that the short name of the OD account had to be the same as that to the left of the @ sign of the email address. So if someone's email address is [email protected] then their OD account short name had to be 'fred'. Otherwise Dovecot (IMAP) will not deliver email. I am sure there is somewhere to fiddle with this so the OD account short name can be different but I didn't bother digging around at the time.
