Back to mac and broadband issues

Hi all.
I have a problem with back to mac on mountain lion on my MacBook. I am trying to access my iMac. However looking in the control panel for iCloud it is saying that I need to turn on unp? Which I have in my router settings. It is now saying back in the control panel saying that the speed might not be faster enough and asking me to tweak settings. However my broadband is fast enough.
I was able to connect to my iMac without problems yesterday. Last night I was not able too and this morning it is reporting saying that it is my iMac may not be on or allowing screen sharing.
Any ideas of sorting it out? I am tempted to delete the back to mac keychain and allow a rebuild hoping this will correct the problems
I was wondering if anyone else was having problems. My broadband is with talktalk.

I have a Mac Mini that I use as a file server at home (and a TM backup target). It never sleeps and is doing fine.

I have purchased I phone 4S on April 30th 2014. Since I bought this phone, I have been facing issues such as Battery Back up, Software and Hardware issue and hang issue. I had visited I store last month where they just formatted my phone. The issues were not taken care completely, even till now the issues are on. I would appreciate if you could help me with the right escalation desk for raising my voice to Apple team.
I have been using apple product since long now and never face such dissatisfaction in past

Hello, when you are having an error on your iPhone and going to the Apple store to get it taken care of, make sure you speak up and provide as much detail as you can. The first iPad Mini I had bought had errors on it, and I didn't speak up and provide further details on my issue.
Hope your issue gets resolved soon!

  • Best way to back up mac and external drive to time machine?

My LaCie external Time Machine drive crashed on me somehow and I had to repartition it. I have a second back up (different external drive) through CCC so Im not worried about data loss, but for the life of me, I cant remember how I had time machine configured to back up. I have a second separate external drive that contains my iphoto, imovie and itunes libraries on it. I think I had time machine set up to back that drive up along with my mac separtely somehow, but after thinking about it, isnt that a little redundant. Am I not backing up my iphoto/imovie/itunes external drive through my mac back up? Seems like before I could go into time machine and open that drive from there. If so, is there any reason to back up the iphoto drive separately along with my mac back on time machine, or is that even possible? Would it be easier to restore the iphoto hard drive if it were backup up separately, not as a part of my mac backup? I have had my CCC back up (a second external back up drive) set up to back up the mac and the pic/video/itunes drive separately.

If you open TimeMachine's preferences and click on the Options button you'll see that it works with a simple exclusion rule. It assumes it should back up everything on every drive connected to it except for those files, folders, and drives you exclude.
Like you, I have a separate external drive for media. After playing around with TimeMachine way back when I realized that each time I edited the meta data for music the song or movie got backed up again. I also discovered that at that time TM didn't play nice with iPhoto's library. Given these issues I decided to exclude my media hard drive from TimeMachine and back it up using ChronoSync (on an automatic schedule) once a week.
After some thought I decided I didn't want a simple clone because if a song or movie became corrupt I didn't want to overwrite a good song with a corrupt version. ChronoSync does archiving. When doing a backup if it finds a file has been changed it archives the old one and overwrites with the new one. I look at the logs each week to see if any archiving took place. If I didn't do any editing that week there shouldn't be.
BTW - being a belt and suspenders kind of tech, I have multiple backup drives so one TM drive and one media drive is always off site. A backup is no good if the thief steals it.

  • Sync with Mac and Windows issue

I bought my wife an iPod (our first). I use a MacBook Pro and she uses a Windows desktop. I copied all of my iTunes music onto the new iPod for her from my Mac. I downloaded iTunes to her Windows machine and tried to sync with it, but it says the iPod must be reformatted for Windows and that will wipe out all of her music files. Is there a way that I can copy the music files to the Windows machine so that she doesn't have to use my computer to sync? These are not protected files. All were copied from our CDs.

OK first thing to know is that Windows machines can not (without $$$ software) read Mac formatted iPod. However Macs can read and use Windows formatted iPods just fine. So go ahead and format the iPod on the windows machine.
Next, you will want to transfer your library from the Mac to the Windows machine. If your library is smaller than the total capacity of the iPod, then you can plug the iPod into her Windows machine and then configure it (a checkbox) to enable disk mode. Eject the iPod and plug into the Mac. The iPod should show up in the Mac's iTunes, but also on the desk top as a disk drive.
At this point it is a simple matter to copy the iTunes folder from the Mac onto the iPod. Eject the iPod, then plug it back into the Windows machine, and copy the stuff off the iPod (as a disk drive) to the Windows hard drive.

  • .Mac and Safari issue (no other browser)

I am running Safari 3.1 on Mac OS X 10.5.2 and the issue I am having is Safari related, and is not the fault of .Mac. The problem does not exist in Firefox.
The problem is viewing synced .mac bookmarks. System Preferences is set to automatically synchronize my .mac bookmark data, but when I use Safari and log into www.mac.com, and click on the bookmark link on the top, I click "Open Bookmarks" and Safari redirects to the .mac homepage instead of showing my list of bookmarks. It has happened sometime after the 3.1 update, but I cannot say exactly when.
I have removed the Safari folder inside the User Library, and also the Preferences file, both to no effect.
But I have made a new user, logged into my account and Safari has worked properly.
Does anyone know what might be causing this problem, or what I can remove to fix it.

I am having a similar issue. Have you found a solution for this?

    Hi
Glad to hear your problem is fixed. I would like to suggest that if anybody's advice was helpful to you or was outright responsible for solving your issue, please consider marking their individual posts as such, using the helpful or solved buttons in the headers of their respective posts, so others researching this forum to address a similar problem that they might be having know what worked for you and what didn't. If the suggestions were of no value, and you solved your problem by other means, I, for one, would be interested in knowing what you did, and I suspect others researching this forum trying to solve a similar problem that they might be experiencing would be interested in knowing what you did as well, so, in such event, would you please consider posting a description of your solution? In any event, you should probably mark this post as "answered."

  • Windows Media Player for MAc and other issues

I just bought a mac a week ago.
Decided to do the switch since the person at the store told me I could use the win XP interface. Anyway after installing the win xp, i realised my laptop doesnt not recognise the drivers.I got no sound, no airport. I am not too sure if the service pack is the issue. I am using service pack one.
Since I need to listen to some online lecture recordings and my xp doesnt have sound, i have to use it on MAC OS. But as the problem is the site kept telling me to install Internet explorer 5.5 and above and after install IE for MAc 5.1, it ask for Windows Media player. I installed flip4mac and media player for mac ..it still doesnt work...
I am truly sad to see the difficult in using a macbook and i kinda regretted getting it. It just getting on my nerves....
can someone please guide me or do you have any similar problem?
    Thanks

sound, no airport. I am not too sure if the service
pack is the issue. I am using service pack one.
Yes the service pack is an issue if you're using Boot Camp to run XP. If you don't have SP2, you can try running Parallels Desktop (http://www.Parallels.com) which doesn't require SP2.
Since I need to listen to some online lecture
recordings and my xp doesnt have sound, i have to use
it on MAC OS. But as the problem is the site kept
telling me to install Internet explorer 5.5 and above
and after install IE for MAc 5.1, it ask for Windows
Media player. I installed flip4mac and media player
for mac ..it still doesnt work...
Some streaming media sites are not compatible with Mac OS X. Are these online lectures for school? I would simply ask the person running the class to help you get support. They can tell you pretty quickly if it's possible to listen with a Mac. If it's not, you should be able to do it from XP with either Parallels or Boot Camp (provided you have an SP2 version of XP).
I am truly sad to see the difficult in using a
macbook and i kinda regretted getting it. It just
    getting on my nerves....
There are times that using a Mac (with 5% market share) is frustrating because many websites don't follow standards properly. If the web designers blow it off and only support Windows, 95% of the users are still happy and don't complain. That's lazy and infuriating but it happens quite a lot. There's even a name for it: Mac Marginalization.
So you will run into this from time to time. The best solution on the Macbook is to get one of the Windows environments up and running properly. But you should still complain LOUDLY to the people who set up the bad website. The only way this will change is if users let lazy site administrators know that they are MAD about it.

  • LR5, Canon 6D, Mac and WB issue!

So I just upgraded to LR5 and I'm finding that my white balance is different in LR5 vs LR4.  I had the same problem when I updated to the latest version of 4 (so I had to reinstall 4.3 and all was well)  I figured it was a fluke and didn't think I'd have the same issue with LR5...Anyway if I try to correct skin tones in LR I like to be able to check what my eyes are seeing (on my calibrated screen) by using the RGB numbers.  Typically I find that if I choose a midtone with 85% luminocity and adjust from there letting my numbers fall in a 20 point spread (r=85, g=73-75, b=65-68) I can get a pretty good rendition of my children's skin tones.  This method works GREAT in LR 4.3 but in LR5 NOT AT ALL. LR5 wants me to add way too much yellow (warmth) and magenta (if anything with Canon, sometimes the images have too much magenta in them to start!)  I like to be able to do some quick edits, but if I have to second guess my eyes and don't have solid numbers to check by I'll be adjusting each image to death and second guessing my eyes!  I can use LR 4.3 YES, but I just PAID for 5 and would love for it to work right!   I was just curious if anyone else has noticed a difference in how LR5 was interpreting WB/colorspace or if it's just me!  I am callibrated and even tried recallibrating (didn't change a thing).  Also, it seems strange that v 4.3 is fine as is CS6 but 4.4 and 5 are reading my images really wrong....Thanks is advance!

Here is my image in LR4 with only WB corrected (sample taken from back of left arm)
Screen Shot 2013-07-05 at 8.38.45 AM by nllattanzi, on Flickr
And HERE is the image in LR5 with the same WB settings from LR4 (same exact sample point)
LR5 sample taken from back of left arm using same WB correction as LR4 by nllattanzi, on Flickr
As you can see, even the luminosity of the skin is different in LR5...strange right?
So I found a point of 85% red on the image in LR5 (this was the back of the right arm)
LR5 midtone found with LR4 corrected WB numbers by nllattanzi, on Flickr
As you can see LR is telling me that I need to add magenta and warm it up....
Here is the same image pulled into CS 6 to check the WB (point sample from back of left arm)
PS sample of LR4 edit by nllattanzi, on Flickr
So I was curious as to what LR5 wanted my WB to be so I attempted to correct it by the numbers:
LR5 WB by nllattanzi, on Flickr
YUCK right?!?!? Look how much magenta I had to add (I can't even get the image to say it has 74-73% green unless my image looks magenta-like the skin is actually pink LOL) and it's way too warm
So of course I pulled it into PS and you can see that it's too warm (although surprisingly on this one the magenta checks out...although if I cooled it down it would probably show too much magenta then)
PS sample of LR5 "edit" by nllattanzi, on Flickr
This is really annoying and frustrating!  I do shoot in raw so I could put the raw file in dropbox later if anyone thinks they could have a solution.  And I am using Adobe standard in both LR4 and 5.
    Thanks

  • Mac and PC issue

I have a Mac at home and a PC at work. When I go out on the road I have to take my PC. Would I be able to use my ipod shuffle with both formats or do I have to reset the ipod shuffle everytime I go between OS X and Windows? Is there a way to use the shuffle with both formats?

There's a whole bunch of misinformation here.
The iPod Shuffle comes formatted in FAT32, which works on both Windows and .Mac.
You don't have to do a thing to move back and forth between supported Windows versions and Mac OS X machines. In my own case (an ancient Apr '05 1 GB one) it bounces seamlessly between my new iMac running Tiger, an old eMac running Panther, and a Dell using XP.
No formatting is ever required, ever.
Those who do follow Windows prompts to format will almost always cause themselves many, many more problems than they solve.
Restoring the iPod's firmware has nothing at all to do with formatting.

  • Time Machine or Disk Utlilty to back up Mac and Boot Camp partition

Since I am experiencing slow speeds I'm planning to format my HD and restore it. I wanted to know if it would be better to restore it from a TM back up or a disk utility image of the HD?
Also, which one will work better with the XP Boot camp partition? a TM backup restore or a disk utility image and restore?

I'm performing a restore now. lets see if this fixes the issue. the method i'm using is restoring the entire HD from a time machine backup.
Please keep us informed on the outcome.
i still dont understand the difference between the three methods i learnt...
    time machine restore
Full restore of your whole OSX volume (operating system; applications and user files) at the time of the last Time Machine backup (or an earlier one if you want to)
disk utility back up and restore
Prior to OSX 10.5 Leopard there was no Time Machine and that was the prefered way for a full backup
    Still useful in some situations
reinstall SL and restore from TM
Clean fresh install of the operating system and restore from Time Machine backup of third-party apps and user files

  • WRT54G ver 2 Mac and PC issues

    I have...
a WRT54G ver 2, firmware v4.21.1 (latest available for this model),
two PC desktops wired (192.168.1.101) - second desktop not used much),
    a PC laptop wireless (169.254.58.14),
    a Mac Desktop wireless (192.168.1.104),
    and 2 Mac Laptops (169.254.75.54) (169.254.254.36).
    The problem is...
When one of the wireless computers is turned on it won't connect unless the router is powered down and back on. It will be fine until one of the other wireless computers are turned on and now it doesn't connect. It is possible to get them all simultaneously connecting, but difficult. It seems to be in the timing. I still haven’t nailed it down. Frustrating...
    The questions...
    Did I give enough information?
Can I do what I want with this router or do I need to upgrade?
    If can do, what settings?
    If can't, new hardware recommendations?
    Thanx

okay... go to www.linksys.com/download and download the latest firmware for the router, try upgrading/reflashing firmware on the router...after reflashing/upgrading firmware on the router reset it and reconfigure it according to ISP settings...on the router's setup page click on wireless tab and try changing channel to 11, click on advanced wireless settings, reduce beacon interval to 50, fragmentation and RTS threshold to 2304, also transmission rate to 54Mbps and save the settings...power cycle the entire network and check whether it works or not and let me know.
Thanks! I had already downloaded and installed the latest firmware, but it didn't really help. I set the parameters you described, and bam, all wireless devices work. I shut down and restarted each one to verify, and they can access the network!
    Again, Thanks a lot!

  • BT home hub and broadband issues please help!!

This **** thing is driving me crazy.
To get broadband in my house we have to go with BT so signed up about a week and a half ago and got sent a home hub 3.
the thing connected up ok but the flaming internet connection drops out every 5 to 10 mins and its **bleep** annoying.
anyway a couple of days into the contract and the first home hub packs up, phone bt and am on with their broadband technician who i can barely understand for 30 minutes when he decides that the home hub is broke so he send out a new one a few days later......
connect that one up and its exactly the same dropping internet connection all the time and with a day and a half that home hub packed up too!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so i spent another 30 mins on the phone to bt again, no sorry nothing, send me another home hub so thats the third one in under 2 weeks and ive only had it connected for an hour or so and its dropping internet connection about every 5 mins.
    effing rubbish
anything i can do ??? cant put up with this for 12 months!!!

  • What is the best way to back up MAC and of office 2010

I just lost my hardware. Lost all my files from 6 months of heavy work.
I now will start from zero and would like to use the best as possible Back-up solution for my Mac Air.
My question is what is the best tool for it: I cloud? Time Machine?
The point is that I do have most of my files at Office (Powerpoint, Excel and Word for Mac). What is the best solution for office?
    Thx.

It's less a question of the best tool than of how many tools and backups.
Surely, Time Machine is fine for one type of backup. A second backup should be a full clone of your current system. A third backup is an incrementally updating backup for the clone. The fourth is a backup you put in a fireproof safe or in a bank safe deposit box.
Backups should be made on regular schedules. Time Machine updates hourly. One should be a weekly update. The one you store away should be a monthly update.
Choose a final strategy that works best for you and provides adequate security for your data. Remember, you can never have too many backups.

  • Back to Mac and sleep

I want to use the feature with my MacBook Pro and the home computer. Will the home computer (Mac Mini) be OK if I deny it sleep?

I have a Mac Mini that I use as a file server at home (and a TM backup target). It never sleeps and is doing fine.

  • Emails bonced back by .mac and .me accounts

I have a pop3 account through a third party server but use apple mail as my email client- any emails I send to a .mac or .me account are being bounced back with a general failure notice. It even happens from my iphone. Is that the .mac server seeing my email as spam? Is there any thing on my end I can do? What can my client that have .mac or .me do on their end to let me in?

    I'm experiencing the same problem!
