Back to mac problems

I have 2 macs 2008 imac at work and 2013 at home. Both have the latest versions of maverics both routers have PNPlay set to on.
I cannot connect consitently.
If I uncheck and check icloud - backtoMac it starts working.
Any ideas how to trace the issue ?
Cheers

Helllo Warby,
It sounds like Back to My Mac is not working correctly. I want to recommend these steps from the article named:
OS X: Using and troubleshooting Back to My Mac with your iCloud account
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4907
Troubleshooting Back to My Mac
If Back to My Mac is not working as expected, try the troubleshooting steps below, if they apply.
Update all your Macs to OS X Lion v10.7.3 or later (OS X Lion v10.7.4 or later is recommended).
Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu. Open iCloud System Preferences and check that Back to My Mac is enabled. See if any diagnostic messages are provided under the Back to My Mac section to assist you with troubleshooting and resolving any connection issue.
Toggle Back To My Mac off and back on by deselecting and then reselecting Back To My Mac in iCloud System Preferences.
Make sure the computer you are trying to connect to is not sleeping and is set to Wake on Demand. For more information about Wake on Demand, see this article.
If you are using an AirPort base station, make sure your firmware is up-to-date (open AirPort Utility 6.0 or later).
Check your network for a multiple NAT setup and reconfigure your network as needed.
Make sure NAT-PMP or UPnP is enabled (if you are using an AirPort Extreme Gigabit Ethernet base station, click here for information about AirPort Extreme Gigabit Ethernet and NAT PMP).
Ensure TCP port 5354 and UDP ports 4500 and 5353 are open on your firewall. To learn more about ports used by Apple products, click here.
And this section from toward the bottom if needed.
If you still are unable to use Back to My Mac reliably
Contact iCloud Support. Be sure to provide the following information:
A detailed description of your network setup for each computer, including router types or models and modem brands.
The details or screenshots of any diagnostic messages provided in the Back to My Mac System Preferences pane. (For assistance with screenshots, see this article for OS X Lion or this article for OS X Mountain Lion.)
The results of the traceroute performed on each computer when checking for a multiple NAT setup. (For assistance with capturing the traceroute, see this article for OS X Lion or this article for OS X Mountain Lion.)
The Computer Name and Local Hostname of each of your computers.
Any other troubleshooting steps you have performed.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Using Time Machine to "go back" before Mac Mail problem

My wife's Mac mail account stopped receiving email 3 days ago.  Attempts to fix it have been futile.  (It can send but not receive.  The activity monitor suggests that it is getting hung up on a particular email as it stalls at 13 out of 233.)  Considering using Time Machine to go back to just before the problem.  Questions: Is it possible to limit TM to (1) my wife's acct only or (2) Mail only?
My wife will definitely provide me a gruesome death if I lose her emails!
    Cheers,
    Nigel

Thanks, applefandan.  I just haven't used Time Machine quite enough to a gained confidence, but after a little bit of experimenting and a bit of Youtube coaching (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fes93NW_KE0) I went back to pre-problem, and had no trouble getting back the mail my wife had lost over the past several days.
Now on to the next problem! . . .

I have a similar problem: I switched from mac mail to Outlook 2011 as the default client, and want to switch back. Mailto links (eg from browser etc) default to Mail.  However, when I try to email a Word document as an attachment, it continues to open Outlook.  Outlook has a button in its prefs for making it the default client, but I don't see a way to turn this pref off in either Outlook or in Word.

  • HT1515 Just installed Airport Express on Mac 10.6.8  Can't see base station.  Hard Reset the Airport.  Rebooted machine.  How can I tell if this is a Mac problem or Airport Express Problem?

I have a Mac 10.6.8.  Just installed Airport Express.  I can't see any base stations.  I did a hard reset on the Airport Express, turned off all devices,  turned them back on.   I see plenty of Airport networks in the neighborhood.  How can I tell if I have a Mac problem or an Airport Express problem?  Airport Express blinks Amber.

Obviously,  I'm still using ethernet to be able to reply to this.
Alright, use the same ethernet cable to plug directly into the airport express. This will FORCE the airport utility to now see it regardless of weak signals & interference. You can set it up that way.
BTW, what is the original intent on the express?

  • MacBook pro does not start. How can I back to Mac OS X Lion?

I have a MacBook Pro. On my MacBook i made three partition, then I installed window 8. After that I started windos and try to delete third partition by Administrator tool from windows operating system. After that my MacBook does not start. How can I back to Mac OS X Lion?
After that I again install windows 8 from a DVD. Windows start well, but I can not start Mac OS system, may be it was 10.6.  Sever times I tried to install OS X Lion 10.7 thought DVD, I could not. On MacBook I have a lot of important data.
What can I do. I want to a complete suggestion. Please help me to solve the problem.
My MacBook Pro model no. A1286.

You installed Windows improperly the result of which was to wipe out the bootloader for OS X. You can give this a try:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the OS X disk icon from which you want to boot.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
If you are still unable to boot from the OS X volume then you will need to reinstall OS X:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
This will destroy the Windows bootloader so you cannot boot into Windows. The solution is to remove all the partitions on the drive except the OS X partition, then expand the OS X partition to take up the entire drive.
Use Boot Camp Assistant in the Utilities folder to create a Windows partition on which you can install Windows. You cannot have any other partitions on the drive besides these two.
Now given all the above you may be able to install a third-party bootloader that would work with the setup you now have: Boot Runner 1.4.

  • HT1533 How can I switch back to Mac OS X from Windows 7 Bootcamp?

I'm having problem switching back to Mac OS on my Macbook Air.  It's currently running Windows 7 bootcamp without a Mac OS installed with it.  I tried booting up on Mac OSX installer disc (Snow Leopard) on the external CDROM drive but it boots to Windows instead.  I tried the Boot Camp Control Panel on Windows and Restart to Mac OS X but it could not find an OS X intalled and I tried changing the startup disc to the installation disc on the CDROM and restarted but still goes to Windows.
    Please HELP!
    Thank you.

The MBA did not ship with an OS on DVD because they don't have an optical drive. There are two kinds of OS disks - commercial release, which for Snow Leopard is 10.6.3 I believe, and machine specific. If your SL disk is gray it isn't going to boot your MBA because it isn't made for the MBA. If your SL disk has a cat on it look at what specific version it is. As I said, I think it is 10.6.3 and while I wasn't able to find out what specific OS version your MBA shipped with, I'm pretty sure it was a version later than 10.6.3 and if I'm right your disk isn't going to boot the computer. You'll need to either contact Apple for a valid replacement installer or find someone with a Mac who can make a valid installer on a USB drive or DVD.

  • How do I switch the Start Up Disk back to Mac OSX hardrive ?

    Hi Mac users....
I think I created a huge problem on my computer. I was looking to stop a program from opening up, snapz pro x, every time I restarted my computer. I found out how to delete eventually, but during my search I went to system preferences...than hit startup disk...then clicked on Network startup without switching back to Mac OSX hardrive startup. When I restarted the computer it only flashes a small world button logo and doesn’t reboot. How do I get back onto the computer to change it back to startup with MAC OS X on Mac system. Would I hold the control button down while restarting? I am worried...I hope I didn’t crash my computer? Thanks for help in advance. Please email me if this is quicker to respond.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Hold down the option key while starting. That will launch Startup manager and you can choose your drive there to start from. Once started go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select the hard drive again.

  • Back to mac and broadband issues

    Hi all.
I have a problem with back to mac on mountain lion on my MacBook. I am trying to access my iMac. However looking in the control panel for iCloud it is saying that I need to turn on unp? Which I have in my router settings. It is now saying back in the control panel saying that the speed might not be faster enough and asking me to tweak settings. However my broadband is fast enough.
I was able to connect to my iMac without problems yesterday. Last night I was not able too and this morning it is reporting saying that it is my iMac may not be on or allowing screen sharing.
Any ideas of sorting it out? I am tempted to delete the back to mac keychain and allow a rebuild hoping this will correct the problems
I was wondering if anyone else was having problems. My broadband is with talktalk.

I have a Mac Mini that I use as a file server at home (and a TM backup target). It never sleeps and is doing fine.

  • Lost Mac OS 9.1 Safari super fast...repaired back got Mac OS X 10.1 and IE?

having deleted the driver off the desktop rsently(thinking it was the DVD doubled install) i took my APPLE to my PC doctor.i showed him the 3 CDs that came with it and explained the deletion, and he said they can't be used to reinstall the driver/safari for the Mac.they were Software Restore...Software Install and Apple Hardware Test(hardware problems)so i left the tower with him and got it back with Mac OS X/version 10.1/Memory 768MB dated 2001 on the finer print at the bottom of the page from.....about this Mac page.i repower the tower verify connections going in with Verizon Fios techs and all is good.the apple screen comes up and i can access the internet but it is slow if i post are start threads on info sites and you tube sits with the color time out wheel till i reset the tower.even off the apple home page into basic sites the black/white time shows up second pass and the page comes up.called the PC repair guy and he said he needs the original program cd for the safari and driver that the unit came with, and the 3 i showed him didn't have itmy desktop shows the IE icon in place of the Safari icon before i nuked the driver.my question is where would somebody get this mystery cd or is it downloadable..appreciate any info on getting this PC back to the way it was.thank you

With numerous joined words, and runon sentences, it is a wonder anyone can understand what you are trying to say. Try to break down what you did into separate smaller sentences. Space the sentences with two spaces after each period. Use uppercase the letter EYE. And state your problem clearly.

  • HT4759 iCloud does not back up iMac HD...seems crazy why not...Appl passing up money for backing-up Mac's?

iCloud does not back up iMac HD...seems crazy why not...Appl passing up money for backing-up Mac's? What is the best Cloud back-up solution and can a Cloud Clone be made?

I had a problem where it would not backup any more. Some of the diagnostics that they had me do were:
    1. Repair Disk on the TM drive
    2. Try backing up by clicking/holding the TM Icon and choose Backup Now
    If failed:
    3. Reboot Leopard
    4. Try step 2 again
    If Failed:
    5. Disk Utility repair permissions
    6. Try step 2 again
    If Failed:
    7. Log out and login as administrator
    8. Launch Console from the Utilities Folder
    9. In the System Log Search for "Time Machine"
    10. Use that to help figure out problems and call Apple Care

  • Booted from PC back to MAC?

Hi there, I am wondering......I did not purchase extended phone support yet from Apple, so I am trying to find out if anyone else has ever encountered this problem?
It didn't happen today. But a couple of months ago, I kept being booted out of PC side back to MAC side. When this happend, I also lost my bootcamp icon on the toolbar in PC also. It didn't happen today, and the bootcamp icon is there.
Anyone know what that was about?
    Thanks

    Hi.
    Thanks.
I am hardly ever in PC, but yes, there was an issue. First that happened, then the norton anti virus stopped working, but i left it for months bc i know how many hours i spend on phone trying to correct issues with technology. This is a brand new system, not even a year old, so i wasn't expecting problems. I did sit today and have the virus protector re-installed with norton. I did ask if they thought this was the cause of these other problems (booting me out), and he said no. I did a quick system scan, i had one keytracker only. I then went to contact MICROSOFT, but i find out that there is a charge (large one too) to contact microsoft for tec support now. When did that become in effect? It wasn't a few months back!
I did have another odd thing happen only one time after this stuff was going on. I was on MAC, and a microsoft pop up window opened, telling me of a problem or something? (cant remem. exactly). I was suspicious and didn't touch the message. Never had it again, but there was something similiar on the news around that time. I was in mac though?
I think i will go back and do a full system scan on pc next.
Yet another question for you though....can virus's attack pc, if i am not using it, but on mac?

  • Booting back to Mac OS

I have Windows 7 installed into a bootcamp partition. Everything works marvellously, but my problem is that when booting back into Mac OS I have to reset the clock which is always 14 hours advanced.
Has anyone else had this problem or a fix for it?

    Hi
On the mac side launch System Preferences, click on the Date & Time Preferences Pane. Adjust your location by clicking on the Time Zone Tab. On the Date & Time Tab select an appropriate NTP Server. For where you are the asian one will do.
If this does not work manually adjust the clock to the correct time by un-ticking the "Set date and time automatically" option.

THERE IS SOMEONE CAN HELP ME...? THANKS :-)

What kind of problems, viniade? You didn't say.
If it's internet problems, a connectivity problems could be related to the hosts file, which is in red.
If it's printer problems, could be the failed Brother printer background process loading failure.
As far as John Galt's reply is concerned, I agree with him on the Geneio problem. I've never heard of it but after I looked it up it's apparently a real problem-causer with lots of Mac users:
    https://encrypted.google.com/#q=genieo+mac+problems
And as far as CleanMyMac is concerned, I use that myself & I've never had any problems. HOWEVER, I stick with the software makers' default cleaning procedures. Because OS cleaners, when you get into areas that you're not sure of, just do what you tell them to do. And if you're not sure of what you're doing & you go exploring & pick some cleaning procedure that you're doubtful of but despite your doubts you run them anyway, and you're wrong, then guess what..... a lot of times it's reinstall from a backup time, or even reinstall a whole OS all over again time. IF you're lucky, and IF you learned something. So lesson learned for you there, eh?
In my experiences with people who know just enough to be dangerous (and yeah..... been there myself decades ago with both Windoze from 3.1 to 7, & Mac's OS, so done dat, learned), a lot of those folks download apps & programs & utilities that're advertised as miracle cleaners. Problem is, it seems like that the more they hype, the more likely you are to get a bunch of crap also installed if you're not paying attention to EVERY SINGLE installation dialogue that pops up in succession. Those things are written so that stuff gets installed that you really don't need, which you'll miss because they're writtent to BE missed & zoomed right on by, but which benefits the company plenty, sometimes to your Mac's detriment & sometimes to your Contacts' detriment (emailed spam), if they get into that database. Those kinds of "helpful" cleaners are in fact hackers' semi-Trojans, aka malware, spyware, adware, etc etc.
So having said that, I'd recommend dumping your "TuneUpMyMac" app for at least the time being, until you get your Mac back up & running well again. And then, think twice about reinstalling it. Generally, in my experience, cleaning out the caches is all that's usually necessary to do as far as cleaning is concerned, aside from what should be ordinary tidiness & organization of your personal stuff on your HDD.
Not knowing your level of expertise, I'll go ahead & suggest something I use whenever my Mac starts getting flakey: Applejack.  It's a fixit utility that's run in single-user mode (Command-S at startup chime, type in "applejack" at the prompt).  You can download it from here: http://applejack.sourceforge.net
Currently, the Applejack makers don't have a version for Mavericks, but their latest version 1.6 runs in my own Mavericks just fine. The biggest culprit I've found thru using Applejack to most minor problems, like persistent beachballing for example, is clogged-up cache files. Applejack dumps them all, System & User caches. I should point out though that in Mavericks, Applejack may not be able to find your User folder when it asks if you'd like to clean out any User's cache folders. If that's the case, just *accurately* type out your own User folder's path: Users/yourusername and press Enter.
Good luck to ya. And remember, if in doubt, RESEARCH WHAT YOU WANT TO DO UNTIL YOU'RE NOT IN DOUBT.  Then, with *learning* in mind, do what you WERE unsure of.
But nontheless, make sure your Mac's backed up first AND that your restoring-from-backup apps work like they're supposed to work, using the backups that were created with those same apps, whether it's Time Machine or, say, Carbon Copy Cloner.
