Back to My Mac and remote servers?

Hello --
I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to connect to servers mounted on my Mac at work while accessing it from home via Back to My Mac. I don't control port mapping on the router at work, which apparently doesn't support UPnP or NAT-PMP. But I am able to connect to either machine from either location.
When I connect to the work Mac, though, I'm only able to see the local hard drive, not servers mounted on that computer. Is there any way to extend the connection to the rest of the network? I can also use LogMeIn Hamachi, but I run into the same issue there.
Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

well I know when I had back to my mac, I could  ssh into a computer using the address format computerName.userName.members.mac.com. So if my mobileme name was [email protected] and the computer's name in sharing was imac. the address would be imac.bob.members.mac.com.  If you have ARD I could be worth a shot, see if it works.
What's are you missing with back to my mac? copy/paste? terminal? Remote install?

  • ICloud, MobileMe, Back To My Mac, and remote Time Capsule inconsistencies

I just upgraded one of my two computers to 10.7 (a little late - was hoping to avoid a problem - oh well).
After the upgrade I updated my local Time Capsule with the "new" Back To My Mac feature via Airport Utility as requested.
However, when attempting to connect to my remote TC it is not visable in Airport Utility of in the Finder Sidebar under "Shared" since it is still using the "old" BTMM through MobileMe. I can confirm this since my seoncd computer is still using 10.6 and can connect fine to this remote TC via the "old" BTMM.
I want to upgrade the second computer to 10.7, but then I will not have access to the remote TC in order to reset it's BTMM from the "old" to the "new" version of BTMM. Yes, I could go and get my remote TC (used for off-site backups), bring it home, connect it to my local LAN, update it, then return it to it's remote location - but should I have to if BTMM is a feature of 10.7 and iCloud? Has anybody else resolved such an issue?
    Thanks in advance!
    More info:
Both TCs are running the latest firmware (7.6.1)
Using both Airport Utility 6.0 and 5.6 (5.4 on the 10.6 Mac)

If this is the drive I back up to, will my Macbook back up to the drive over the net using Back to my Mac when I am not at home?
I would guess that you could find a 3rd party application which would be able to backup to a remote drive.
Although Time Machine might do that, the problem is that Time Machine would see the drive accessed locally (while connected to your local LAN) and the drive accessed remotely (via Back to My Mac) a two completely separate drives. Therefore (if Time Machine allows this) a backup done locally would have no impact to a backup done remotely.

  • HT1284 Can I back up my Mac and my pc to the same external hard drive?  If so, could you explain how? Thanks.

Can I back up my Mac and my pc to the same external hard drive?  If so, could you explain how? Thanks.  I am a new user with mountain lion.

You could partition the drive into 2 partitions.  One formatted as HFS+ for Mac OS X back, and one formatted as NTFS for Windows backup.
You would have to move the drive from system to system to do your backups.  If there are 2 systems, I would suggest just getting separate drives for each, unless they are both laptops, then you will be disconnecting the drives all the time anyway.
Unless Windows is running in a virtual machine on your Mac.  Then a partitioned drive would be fine.

  • How to use the same services-config for the local and remote servers.

My flex project works fine using the below but when I upload my flash file to the server I doesn't work, all the relative paths and files are the same execpt the remote one is a linux server.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <services-config>

        </channel-definition>
        </channels>
    </services-config>
I think the problem  is the line
            <endpoint uri="http://localhost/domainn.org/amfphp/gateway.php" class="flex.messaging.endpoints.AMFEndpoint"/>
but I'm not sure how to use the same services-config for the local and remote servers.

You are confusing "served from a web-server" with "compiled on a web-server". Served from a web-server means you are downloading a file from the web-server, it does not necessarily mean that the files has been generated / compiled on the server.
The server.name and server.port tokens are replaced at runtime (ie. on the client when the swf has been downloaded and is running) not compile time (ie. while mxmlc / ant / wet-tier compiler is running). You do not need to compile on the server to take advantage of this.
    Hi Paul,
In Flex, there is feature that lets developer to put all service-config.xml file configuration information into swf file. with
    -services=path/to/services-config.xml
    IF
    services-config.xml
have tokens in it and user have not specified additional
    -context-root
and this swf file is not served from web-app-server (like tomcat for example) than it will not work,
Flash player have no possible way to replace token values of service-config.xml file durring runtime if that service-config.xml file have been baked into swf file during compilation,
for example during development you can launch your swf file from your browser with file// protocol and still be able to access blazeDS services if
    -services=path/to/services-config.xml
    have been specified durring compilation.
I dont know any better way to exmplain this, but in summary there is two places that you can tell swf  about service confogiration,
    1) pass -services=path/to/services-config.xml  parameter to compiler this way you tell swf file up front about all that good stuff,
or 2) you put that file on the webserver( in this case, yes you should have replacement tokens in that file) and they will be repaced at runtime .

  • Can i back up my mac and windows operating system on the one hard drive?

Hello everyone, i use a 4TB external hard drive to back up my imac. I recently installed Parallels and Windows 8.1 so I can run a PMS for my business. Now that i have installed Parallels and windows 8.1 on the mac can i format the drive so it will back up the mac and the windows operating system? Thanks!

If you want to back up with Time Machine, you need a GUID partition table and an HFS (Mac OS X) partition. If you can also create a Windows partition without destroying the partition table, then you can use the same drive for both systems. I can't give you specific instructions for Windows.

  • I am looking to back up my MAC, and I need to know how big of an external hard drive I need

I am looking to back up my MAC, and I need to know how big of an external hard drive I need. How do I determine this?

Well, they recommend at least 2 - 3 times the size of your hard drive if you are using Time Machine because that keeps making backups until it runs out of space (and then deletes the oldest to make room for the newest).
However, if you prefer to have a bootable clone as a backup, you need about the same size as your hard drive since it is a perfect copy of your system (unless you want to partition and keep an older clone separately).
So, check to see how large your hard drive is and go from there.

  • Back to my Mac and Verizon DSL must not work

I did everything is says to do to get Back to my Mac working and it doesn't work on Verizon DSL.
I enabled UPnP on both routers(each router is in a different home with different account), logged into .Mac, turned on file sharing and screen sharing and turned on Back to my Mac and I can't get either computer to show up.
I even logged out of .mac and logged back in.
    Am I missing something?

  • Are "Back to my MAC" and "Port Forwarding" mutually exclusive?

I have been using APExtreme and Port Forwarding successfully for several weeks now. The PF is to allow access to game players on a PC which acts as a server on the web. All Good.
One more thing, I have a ISP provided wireless modem/router to talk to the cable and the world. It seems to work either bridged or un-bridged.
I have disabled the wireless on the ISP's modem/router. (Actually the ISP's device doesn't hold a candle to the APE.)
    Still all good.
So the firewall is on in the APExtreme and none on the modem router, and I have a port defined for my gamers to get access to my server in the APExtreme.
I now want to implement Back to my MAC on my MBP and my other Apple devices. I believe these use iCloud for which I have an account and it seems to be working well with my iPhone.
In Properties, when I select BtmM, iCloud says communications will be slow if I have port forwarding on. Also I will not be able to use the router function in my Modem/router.
I'd really like to have the modem/router firewall up, and do the port forwarding there, but the BtmM will likely not get through.
    So what does anyone suggest?
Can I use BtmM and port forwarding without too much degradation?
    Please advise.
    Thanks
    Barry

To best answer your question on whether the two are "mutually exclusive," let take a look at how Back to My Mac (BTMM) basically works.
    BTMM - General Requirements
    OS X Leopard 10.7.3+
Active iCloud account. Each Mac & the AirPort router, that will be relying on BTMM, needs to be configured with the same account.
A publicly reachable IP address for your router.
A router that supports either NAT-PMP or UPnP. For AirPorts, be sure it is running 7.6.1+ firmware.
BTMM uses TCP port 5354 and UDP ports 4500 & 5353 for communications.
    BTMM - Basic Communication Flow
For a computer connected to the Internet via a router, BTMM "asks" the router for its configuration information. For a router, like your AirPort, that uses NAT-PMP, BTMM will ask the router to assign arbitrary public ports. In turn, the router will provide these port assignments (& the router's Public IP address) back to BTMM.
BTMM then sends this information to the iCloud account. In background iCloud updates a special set of DNS entries to be used by BTMM. These entries are then made available to all BTMM clients using your iCloud account. When a computer, with BTMM enabled, uses your iCloud credentials, it automatically retrieves a list of all other computers/routers that are registered with the same account. All these devices should then appear under the SHARED section of the Finder.
When attempting to connect to a remote computer (or router), BTMM creates a secure connection to that remote device using the information from the iCloud account.
Once the connection is established, the devices can then communicate with each other.
So potentially, unless you are using Port Mapping for any of the ports BTMM uses, they should not conflict.

  • Back to my mac and cable modem

I can't find a definitive answer to this question. Is there a cable modem that is compatible with Comcast that supports Back to My Mac?
Right now we have Comcast for business with fixed IPs, so I have just been using afp:// and vnc:// to access my home mac while on the road. But in the interest of saving $$$, I want to switch to Comcast for home, which doesn't offer fixed IPs.
The last time I tried (with Mavericks), I could not connect to any computer at home through Back to my Mac because the Comcast-supplied modem didn't support Upnp (Universal Plug and Play). A brief search could not find any cable modems that do support Upnp. Am I missing something, or should I give up on the idea?

Is there anyone out there who uses Back to My Mac (for sharing files and screens) and a cable modem? If so, how well does it work? Did you get a special modem or just the cheapest one that you could find?

  • Back To My Mac and L2TP

    Hi,
In version 7.5+ firmware for the AEBS if you used "Back To My Mac" the base station
would silently ignore any user attempts to redirect the L2TP ports.
This of course would screw up any attempt to use the VPN software included in
    Snow Leopard and Lion.
I was stuck at the 7.4 firmware level for almost a year until I found the knowledge
base article that noted this bizarre behavior.
I removed my name from the back to my mac panel and I was able to use the
system VPN with firmware versions >= 7.5 ;(
I never was able to get back to my mac to work at hotspots, I suspect that both
ends of the network need to support Apple's PMP protocol.
Does anyone know if the 'new' Back To My Mac implemenation still disallows
users from redirecting the L2TP ports?
    Jerry

So I've found the offical word burried in an Apple Document...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1629
scroll down to Port 4500 which is used for IPSec VPN and Back to My Mac...
    4500
    UDP
    IKE NAT Traversal
    ipsec-msft
Mac OS X Server VPN service, Back to My Mac (MobileMe, Mac OS X v10.5 or later).
Note: VPN and MobileMe are mutually exclusive when configured through an Apple access point (such as an AirPort Base Station); MobileMe will take precedence.
    NOTE TO APPLE:
    1) Do NOT create network services that conflict with well known and used TCP and UDP ports.
    2) If you create two conflicting services. Please MAKE A NOTE IN THE MANUAL for OS X Server so Admins are aware of the problem.

  • Back to My Mac and Vonage Linksys RTP 300 Router

I am trying to get Back to My Mac to work with my iMac running 10.6.2 and my PowerBook G4 running 10.5. But I have a problem with my router... I use the Vonage (RTP-300) and it is not one of the supported routers on the list.
I basically have the same question as this user:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1518112
Although the question has been answered, I don't know how to use my Time Machine as the base station and have my Vonage connect to it without making it the router. Right now this is my set-up:
Cable box > Vonage RTP 300 > Time Machine > iMac
Can someone please help me with step-by-step guide? Thanks in advance!

Can anyone help me please? I'm desperate! Thanks in advance!

  • Back To My Mac and Cisco VPN client

I've used back to my mac for a while and love it. Recently I've had to start using the Cisco VPN client and every time I use it it says "Because Back to My Mac is turned on, your VPN connection cannot be established with the server. Would you like to turn off Back to My Mac?". Is there any way to run them both without having to keep starting and stopping back to my mac?

    I too have this issue.
Every time I have to connect via VPN, I have to disable my Back to My Mac.
    Kinda *****.
    Any solution?

  • I backed up my mac and now i can't install itunes

i did a back up of my mac and my itunes disappeared,so when i try to download it it says i need a MAC OS X 10.6.8 or later...but i'm installing the same one had!

It sounds like you may have done an iTunes sync. If so you will need to connect the phone to the computer and sync again but with different settings on the Photos page of iTunes. See the instructions below (more details in iTunes: Syncing photos - Apple Support)
To delete synced photos and videos from your device
In iTunes, click the Device button in the upper right corner. (If viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button in the upper-right corner first.)
Click the Photos tab in the resulting window.
Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
Note: To delete all synced photos, deselect "Sync Photos from" and, when asked, click "Remove photos."
    Click Apply.

  • Back to my Mac and tv.

Hopefully I can explain this properly.
I have 2 tv's and they have been working flawlessly for over a year, one of them will not stay connected if I enable NAT on my router. Mobileme is asking me to enable NAT on my airport express so that back to my Mac will function. Once I do that, one tv falls of the network and will not come back no matter what I do. The only way it comes back is if I turn NAT off in my airport express settings. One should have nothing to do with the other according to Applecare and the Genius Bar @ my local Apple Store. Any ideas guys?
    /Users/Mark/Desktop/Picture 1.png

Do you have any NAT rules set up that might affect the IP address being used by the tv.
