Back To My Mac; does it wake the iMac from sleep?

Back To My Mac sounds promising. But, it is nowhere mentioned whether it wakes the Mac up from sleep or even starts it up when contacted from afar? If not, it is not that useful!

From teh users guide here (it's a .pdf) -> http://images.apple.com/dotmac/docs/L358808ABackMacUG.pdf
"*Adjust sleep settings*
Back to My Mac can connect to your remote computer only if it is awake. If your computer is in sleep mode, it does not automatically wake up when you try to connect using Back to My Mac."

  • I am using a USB keyboard and everytime I wake the iMac from sleep the keyboard will not respond unless I unplug and replug the keyboard. I am using a mid-2010 iMac with OSX 10.6. Any help would be appreciated.

I am currently using a USB keyboard (PC Model) and everytime I wake the computer from sleep the keyboard no longer responds unless I unplug and replug it. The USB mouse I am using works fine with no issues and I have already gone through the prompt to identify the keyboard in the settings. If anyone know of a setting I can use to permenantly enable the keyboard so I no longer have to unplug and replug it that would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

Your 2010 MBP would be able to handle Yosemite, but I would strongly suggest that you get the current problem sorted out before trying to upgrade to Yosemite. I'd also recommend another backup that isn't created by Time Machine if you are thinking of upgrading. SuperDuper and CarbonCopyCloner can make bootable clones of hard drives. If you clone your existing system to a fresh external drive, you would be able to boot from that drive and recover quickly in the event that your Yosemite upgrade didn't work out. Time Machine backups are not 100% reliable.
It's possible that, if your internal HD is the one that shipped with your MBP in 2010, it may be failing. If it keeps needing repairs, that is probably a sign that it is approaching the end of its useful life.
Have you run Disk Utility's Repair tool on the external drive as well?
I mentioned the hub because some people have reported here that attaching their USB 3 drives through a USB 2 hub solved some disconnection problems. A good-quality powered USB 2 hub won't cost much.
My most recent brush with random disconnections involved a nice new OWC drive enclosure. I used the cable that came with the drive, but the drive kept disconnecting. Using a different cable solved the problem. You wouldn't expect that what appeared to be a high quality cable would be a problem straight out of the box, but it was.

  • Screen freezes up when I wake the iMac from sleep

Hi, all. This is my first post to Apple Discussions, so please pardon me if this is a dumb question. I have had a problem twice in the last 24 hours. I have an iMac G5 that I keep on most of the time. I do put it on sleep mode when I'm not using it. This morning, and then again this evening, I had the iMac on sleep mode. When I woke the computer, the screen came up, as usual, but when I went to click on the Safari icon, the screen became fuzzy and locked up. Powering the unit down was the only way to restart the computer. After that, things worked fine. However, this is a new occurrence. Is it something serious? Is it easily fixable? Is this common with iMacs? Just wondering. In the meantime, I'll probably just use the "shut down" command when the computer is not in use. Thanks for any advice that you can offer.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Been waiting along time for this problem to be fixed. Unfortunately the update hasn't help at all and even made the situation worse. Now my airplay connection from iMac to stereo abruptly stops after about 10-15 min. so I have to go over and quit wifi, start it up and find my airport network. Not sure why it always has a problem with the apple airport network. My neighbor's pc network is always there.

  • When I wake my iMac from sleep, the wireless does not connect.  I have to shut shutdown and then restart and then it connects.  I am running Lion 10.7.3  Any thoughts?

  • Since upgrading to LionEvery time I wake the computer from sleep mode I have to wait several minutes until the computer connects to the Internet

Since upgrading to LionEvery time I wake the computer from sleep mode I have to wait several minutes until the computer connects to the Internet

I have found that Lion is slower to connect to WiFi when awakening than were previous Mac OS X versions.  However, the WiFi connection usually takes less than 15 seconds unless a Time Machine backup was interrupted when my computer was put to sleep.  When this happens and the computer awakens, the Time Machine backup attempts to continue prior to the WiFi connection having been made.  Until the Time Machine backup fails due to its inability to connect to my Time Capsule because of no WiFi connection, or I stop it manually, the WiFi connection will not occur.  So if Time Machine backups are on, you may be experiencing this bug which I have reported to Apple.

  • Cannot wake my iMac from sleep

I put my iMac to sleep by doing one of required steps. However, I cannot wake my iMac from sleep. I am using a wired keyboard and a wireless mouse.
May I know what is the problem?

    Hi nihow-
    But you are not done.
One of those devices is preventing your mac from waking. You may want to try plugging them back in one at a time and use it for a while to see if you can find the culprit.

  • What is that sound effect when you wake the MBP from sleep?

There is some sound effect every time I wake the MBP up from sleep. I am not sure what is making that sound. It sound like "pffft", I hope that makes sense.

Hi I hve the same problem mi MacBook Pro doeas that, the sound that makes is the one I have for default, Funk (for example if my computer sleeping with the screen open and I press any key on the keybord it makes that sound) if you want you can try this, to chek if that is the sound that you heare, close all the windows and try to use expose.
remember the sound that you are going to heare is the one that you have for default.
Another thing is that I re-instal the OS and the computer stops from doing that but then start again when I eject my iPod from the finder window but I left it conected from the USB and then when the computer was sleeping I desconected it.
I know that maybe nothing of this can help you but I want to let you know that you are not alone.
If you found the fix for that thing please let me know.

  • I can't wake my iMac from sleep

I upgraded my mid 2007 24" imac to Mavericks. After the upgrade after 10 min my screen goes black (sleep). I can't wake the system up. After a few mins it shuts off. Since then I tried several things to figure out was it mavericks or just timing of an issue. Since then I added a new hard drive, then added Mountain lion back on and replaced the memory from 4 gig to new 4 gig. I still get the same issue. After 5 - 10 min the imac goes to sleep mode and I can't awaken it. If I pull the plug out and plug back in I have about 5 - 10 min again before it goes black. It is out of apple warranty so any help I would appreciate. I would like to fix it and I can do it myself if I knew what it was. Power Supply?, Video Card? Logic Board? Any ideas or checks I can do? I am technical and I can disassemble and reasemble myself. Is there any *ram that could have gotten updated or corrupt while upgrading the first time to Mavericks???

  • I cannot wake up IMAC from sleep at times

Recently when my IMAC is either intentionally placed in Sleep Mode of when it goes to that state through inactivity, I find that I am unable to wake the machine up. The sleep mode indicator like goes out, the machine is running, but, nothing can bring the screen up short of pulling out the power cord, reinserting it into a source of power and then pressing the power button in the rear of the unit. The problem is not constant in that it does not occur all the time.

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.

  • Apple keyboard or mouse won't wake up iMac from sleep.

After I put my iMac to sleep the keyboard or mouse won't wake it up. I have to push the power button to awaken it. Wake from sleep is enabled in bluetooth preferences so that is not the problem. Otherwise keyboard and mouse are working fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Regrettably, I can't offer a solution to the problem stated in the title. Instead, I experience the same problem.
    Wireless Mighty Mouse circa 2007
    Wireless Apple Keyboard circa 2007
Bluetooth dongle (a bluetooth thingy connected to a USB port)
Things worked fine until an upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Following the upgrade there were several mouse related issues. Those were resolved. One issue remains: waking by use of mouse or keyboard.
The setup (Same for keyboard and mouse)
System Preferences --- Bluetooth --- Keyboard Connected --- Keyboard Paired. The "Discoverable" box is checked.
    Digging deeper
System Preferences --- Bluetooth --- Advanced --- "Allow Bluetooth device to wake this computer" --- This option is unchecked and is greyed out, inaccessible. Two of the other options are checked and available: the options about opening the Bluetooth assistant and the one about prompting incoming audio.
I've searched other posts. However, many of the other posts seem to conflate this Wake/Sleep issue with various connection issues. Thus, the advice given is a bit confusing to this amateur. Might one of you experts have a solution to this annoying little problem?
    Thanks for your interest.

  • How to wake my Imac from sleep with just power button?

I keep my Imac o the floor so a lot of times I'll accidentally wake it from sleep. I want to set it up so only the power button will wake it.

Not possible unless you unhook the keyboard/mouse.

  • HT3887 My bluetooth devices will not wake my iMac from sleep mode.

My iMac will not awake using the bluetooth keyboard or mouse.  I can use a USB mouse but bluetooth and network connection will not respond.  I must restart the machine.  This happens after several hours of being in sleep mode like all day when at work or over night.  I have the system set to wake the computer with a keyboard or mouse click.  THis works only when in sleep mode for an hour or two.

  • Phone wakes the computer from sleep - ??

Anyone ever seen something like this? It's just started to happen recently, and I haven't reconfigured my desk or the office...
Whenever the phone rings and my laptop is sleeping, the laptop wakes up! The two devices aren't plugged into the same powerstrip, or even the same plug for that matter. And this has never happened before.
    Just thought it was curious.

If you use a wireless router try changing the channel. You can download the iStumbler utility (www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com) and use it to determine what channels are currently free of overlap with any other wireless devices. Alternatively, you may be able to change the telephone's channel. In any case separating the channels may reduce interference. You can also try turning on the Interference Robustness option of the Airport card.

  • Why does leopard wake the ext HD so often?

i have an external HD setup (time machine is not enabled, don't want it) and for some reason it randomly wakes the HD (from sleep?) and my Mac hangs while this is happening...didn't have this issue with 10.4 so anyone know whats up? i'm still using silver keeper for the backup software. thanks.

Yes, it seems Leopard much more often needs to browse around everything...
If you still want to keep the "Put the hard disks to sleep when possible" option in Energy Saver, you can manually set it so the hard disk don't spin down so often.
Default when box is checked, is 10 minutes of inactivity; more often is wear and tear for hard disks, less often is fine, just energy consumption and noise.
You can set this default Energy Saver inactivity lapse to 30 minutes for example:
Open Terminal and run this command:
    *sudo pmset -a disksleep 30*
if you decide to go back to default 10 minutes, just run this command:
    *sudo pmset -a disksleep 10*
    That way,
you can keep this useful Energy Saver option enabled, but don't have to wait for the spinning beachball so often.

  • Vnc wont wake up the mountain lion imac from sleep

after installing mountain lion, vnc wont wake up the imac from sleep. once awake, it works fine  any ideas?

Does your Mac have a wireless connection? Because if this is the case, wake up for LAN access seems to have stopped working altogether with Mountain Lion.
