Back to my Mac: Double NAT error

I can't seem to get Back to my Mac to work. My Airport Extreme says that I have a double NAT error. I have tried to put it in Bridge mode, but doing so disables the wireless capabilities of the Airport Extreme.
The geography of my network is as follows:
Cable port on wall> Cable modem
Cable modem> Ethernet> Airport Extreme
Airport Extreme> WiFi> Macbook Pro
I have a Motorola surfboard modem, which I have called Motorola about and they say that it does not provide a layer of NAT. I have called my ISP and they confirmed that they do not provide a layer of NAT as well.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

I have confirmed that my modem is simply a modem, no gateway. In case you were wondering its a Motorola SB5101U. According to the Airport utility, my IP is 10.1.4.104.
If that's really the "WAN" IP address of your AirPort unit, then it's a "private" IP address, as it's in one of the private address ranges of 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255, and 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255. You can verify that address in the AirPort Utility Internet panel, TCP/IP tab. Unless your ISP tells you otherwise, you should have the "Configure IPv4" set to "Using DHCP" and the WAN IP address should be just below that.
If that address checks out, something "upstream" of your AirPort unit is doing a NAT operation.
The manuals I found for your modem seem to confirm that it has no router functionality, so it would be unable to be the source of the NAT.
I'd call your ISP and ask them why your modem is passing you a "private" IP address. There no need (at least initially) to mention what you have connected to the modem, as that would only tend to confuse the support people.

  • Double NAT Error with Airport Extreme and Airport Express

I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n base station which is connected to my DSL Modem/ Router via Ethernet. I have a MacPro which does not have an airport card installed so I bought an Airport Express 802.11n - which is connected to my MacPro via ethernet - and thus provides my MacPro with internet access.
Originally I had the APExtreme and the APExpress set up in a WDS - all worked well - my other wifi equipped macs and devices in the house connected to the network with no problem, but I did notice that the maximum throughput I was getting was 802.11g speeds - this is of course due to the overhead of the WDS.
I originally purchased these 802.11n devices because I wanted the higher throughput - so I decided to terminate the WDS and just have the APExpress (attached to my MacPro) "join" the wireless network instead of extending it - which works and I am enjoying the 802.11n speed.
So, I just upgraded a couple of my Macs to 10.6.2 and was going to start using "Back to My Mac" and I got the error that there is a double NAT address problem and that "Back to My Mac" won't work until this is resolved.
I know that going back to a WDS will resolve the double NAT problem - but I don't want to take the performance hit that goes with the WDS.
So, short of buying an Airport card for my MacPro (which would eliminate the need of the APExpress)
Is there any other way to resolve this double NAT problem besides WDS?
    Thanks for any advice.

First of all thanks for your quick reply!
Connecting my MacPro to the Airport Extreme would be a serious pain as the DSL Modem and APExtreme are upstairs near the only connection point in the building to a phone line - and my MacPro is downstairs.
I suppose I could dig out a very long ethernet cable to perform the test. But before I jump through that hoop - please explain to me what you are trying to get at - in other words - what does it mean if this resolves the double nat error - and what does it mean if it does not?

  • Double NAT error status after updating to firmware 7.1

This may be a bug. My Airport Extreme was working perfectly, but after updating to firmware 7.1, with no other changes to configuration, it is now reporting a Double NAT error. Both wired and wireless clients still have access to the WAN and each other, so everything still works. I know I can ignore the error, but I wonder if anyone else has seen this issue?
    I have a possibly unusual setup -
My DSL modem creates an address of 192.168.1.47 and hands that to the APE as its WAN address. I've configured the APE to hand out addresses to its client machines on the LAN in the 192.168.2.x range and it does that correctly. So there is no actual conflict - the WAN address is 192.168.1.47 and the client addresses are all in the 192.168.2.x range. Could the new software be assuming that the 192.168.1.x range is the NAT range without verifying the actual range is really 192.168.2.x? Seems unlikely, but it appears to be the case.
    Any insights on this appreciated....

  • HT2497 Why does my Airport Utility keep saying "Double NAT"error?

I had to add a new cable modem to my home network.
I keep getting a "Double NAT" error and my modem keeps the yellow light blinking.
    What do I do?

It's almost a miracle that it was working at all.
Each wall will absorb on average, about 15-20% of the signal so after 4 walls...and a ceiling....which is typically 2-3 time thicker than a wall....there isn't going to much signal left to extend.
Try locating the Express no more than half the distance between the Time Capsule and the general area upstairs that needs more wireless coverage.  Minimize obstructions in the signal path as much as possible.
If that does not help, we'll have to do some SNR measurements to see if what you are trying to do is even feasible.

  • Creating Two Networks with Different Securities and Double NAT Error

I have a Time Capsule which is connected to my cable modem and an AirPort Extreme connected to my Time Capsule via the WAN port. I configured the AEBS to create a wireless network using WEP (I have a few devices that don't support WPA) so I can use two different wireless securities. The AEBS flashes the amber light and once I connect to its network, the AirPort Utility states that it has a "Double NAT" issue. I used my iPhone 5 to connect to the AEBS network and I can access the Internet just fine.
Is this issue one that can be resolved? If so, how? Or do I ignore the issue? If I ignore, what are the implications?
    Thanks!

You need to configure the AEBS in Bridge Mode to eliminate the Double NAT error, which is slowing down your connection...and may likely cause other issues depending on how the network is configured.
If you do not know how to do this, we need to know what operating system you are using on the computer that is being used to configure and setup the AEBS.

  • Help with Time Capsule Double NAT error.

I've been reading different threads on this problem but have been unable to find a solution.
I recently replaced a dead SpeedStream modem with a Motorola 3360, per AT&T's (my ISP) recommendation. Since swapping the modem I've had a "Double NAT" error on my Time Capsule. The new modem is the only change.  We connect every device: 1 G5 tower, 1 iMac, 1 iPad, 1 MacBook Pro via our wireless network. The Time Capsule is stand-alone, e.g., not connected to anything but the modem via the either-net cable provided.
Running 10.7.4, the Airport Utility is 6.0, the TC firmware is up to date as well 7.6.1
We've never had great speed but now it's slower than usual, I'm assuming because of the Double NAT error (two firewalls).
I've followed the AT&T website instructions, to the letter, for switching the 3360 to "bridge mode," letting the TC handle the IP address (correct?) = no internet.
I've also followed the support communities directions for switching the Time Capsule to bridge mode as well, letting the modem handle the IP address, the Double NAT error goes away but = no internet.  In this mode I can't join my own network and I get a "your computer is using an IP address that's already in use" error, though everything but my laptop is off.
What I'm willing to try anything but I need very specific, step-by-step (noob) instructions. Many thanks.

I have to admit when I see Motorola modem I automatically think cable modem.. but yours is adsl.. so when you bridge the modem you have to use pppoe client in the TC.. not dhcp as you would with cable. Is that how you are trying it.
I looked it up and there is a thread almost identical. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3808550?start=0&tstart=0
Bob.. gives instructions with pic in the thread on how to setup pppoe in the TC. This should work, although we have noticed some issues of late with the client not always handling IP correctly.
I am not sure why it fails when you bridge the TC.. that IMO should work without too much hassle.
    I would download 5.6 utility
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
It just does a lot more things than v6 in Lion.
Go to manual setup in 5.6 utility.
    Go to internet tab
    Go to connection sharing.
    Set to Off bridge mode.
    Update the TC.
    Then reboot everything..
    start in sequence.
    1. Modem.. wait a couple of min.
    2. TC .. wait again..
    3. Clients.
What you have previously done may well be correct but not renewing IP addresses properly has messed up the connection to the modem.

  • Time Capsule Double NAT error

    Hello,
I would really like some advice on double NAT and bridge mode before I respond to an error message on my mothers macbook/ TC settings. She recently had some extremely high uploads (approx 10GB that ate up all of her allowance) at times when she was not at her computer and so I reset her TC and changed the WEP password to something really obscure to try and prevent anyone from hacking in to her wifi network.
She has a basic set up: Cable modem connected directly to the Time capsule with no other airports connected to the network. She uses a standard 2010 13"Macbook to access the internet over wifi.
Twice in the last week (once before she noticed the massive uploads and today at about the same time as her internet service says she had a 150MB download that she did not have) she has received an error that says:
    "Double NAT
This Airport wireless device has a private IP address on its Ethernet WAN port. It is connected to a device or network that is using Network Address Translation (NAT) to provide private IP addresses. You should change your Airport wireless device from using DCHP and NAT to bridge mode"
My question is - will following these instructions fix her download problems or make it worse?
Also, is there any other way I can prevent someone from hacking into her network.
    All advice welcome
    Thanks
    Emma

Having a double NAT, indicates that TWO devices on your network are performing Network Address Translation, I am not a complete expert on this or anything but it's not that big an issue, you probably just need to turn off NAT on your Mom's modem.
But this definitely IS NOT causing her issue of using up all her Data allowance with her ISP. Having a double NAT just complicates the network and can cause problems with certain apps. But It will NOT increase data use.
You should use WPA2 as the type of network encryption.
You can use Mac Address Filtering as some kind of added protection.
You could have a Non Broadcast SSID but this again is really only trivial protection, WPA2 with a STRONG password is your best bet.
    Hope this helps,
Anything else I can do just let me know,
PS you should check the DHCP client list or attached client list in Airport settings to see if someone else is using your Mom's bandwidth.
    Regards,
    John

  • I live in an apartment with supplied internet.  I have wireless network with no password.  I have a wall outlet that I can plug into.  When I plug in my TC I get a double NAT error.  I try bridge mode, but I can't get the internet to work.

Can I get an explanation of what bridge mode is?
Can I get suggestions on what I should do to use the TC as a wireless device to spread the same wireless device my apartment is broadcasting?
Can I get a suggestion on how to use the TC as a different wireless device with it's own password without access to the cable modem.  I only have access to a wall port.
I own many apple devices, iMac mid-2011, Macbook Air 2013, 2 ipads, and 2 iphones for the family, and Apple TV.
I want all my devices to be on a password related internet but the double nat on my TC makes weird things happen and slow.  I try bridge mode but the internet doesn't work.
I hope I have described this situation clearly enough.
    Thanks

You building supplied internet is a cheap service that is without proper routable addresses..
Therefore to use more than one IP you MUST have double NAT.. sorry there is no choice..
Slow that is because you are sharing internet with every other person in the building.. get your own broadband service.
Bridge will not work.. it cannot work because the building only has private IP addressing. And they only give you a single address.
You can put a password on the wireless.. go to the airport utility and put in a password.
Other than that I don't understand what password you expect.
Can I get an explanation of what bridge mode is?
No NAT.. means the TC becomes a dumb Wireless AP and switch.. works fine with a cable modem router.. or any broadband router but useless with your building system.
Can I get suggestions on what I should do to use the TC as a wireless device to spread the same wireless device my apartment is broadcasting?
Double NAT, and set your own wireless names. There is no alternative.. sorry.

  • How do I correct a Double NAT status?

I have used time capsule 2TB for a while, made changes many times, never had a problem but today after I made changes it is giving me a blinking amber light from the time capsule unit and from the airport wireless utility status "Double NAT". How can I correct this status?
Thank you in adavnce for the help.

    Hi Thortey,
If you are having issues with a "Double NAT" notification, you may want to take a look at the following article; while it speaks to Double NAT specifically in the context of Back to My Mac, the information and resolution steps for a Double NAT configuration should be universal:

  • How do I set up my Airport Express to my Viasat modem, which requires a DHCP connection, without getting a double NAT connection error?

I have an Airport Express connected to a Viasat 4100 satellite modem. This requires a DHCP connection and is connected to my Airport Express by Ethernet. I then have three computers (two running Mavericks and one running Lion) and two IPhone 5s and an Apple Tv on the network. If the Airport Express is set to DHCP and NAT then the network works and I have internet, but the amber light flashes and I have a double NAT error. If I use it in Bridge mode the airport express goes green but I have no internet. How can I set it up so it works properly? If anyone knows could they please give all the settings I shoud use on the Airport Express as I may have left incorrect setting on it whilst trying to fix the problem. I have checked and it has been confirmed that I cannot change any settings on the satellite modem.

Go into AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Express, and click on the "Double-NAT" error. Click Ignore. There's nothing that can be done about the Double-Nat unless you ignore it (no harm) or contact your ISP and get them to change your Modem/Router into Bridge Mode, and even then can't guarantee that you won't get that error.
Again, best thing to do: Ignore the Double-Nat Error.

  • Get Back to my Mac to Wake from Sleep

Hello.  I am having trouble accessing my home iMac over the internet when it is in sleep mode.  I am running Mountain Lion with an Airport Extreme.  I have Back to My Mac enabled.  I have no problem accessing the computer over the internet when the computer is awake.  My Airport Extreme is running in Bridge mode.  The AE is connected to a Verizon Wireless Router/Modem via an Ethernet cable.  I read somewhere to enable the NAT mode on my Airport Extreme, but this gives me a double NAT error message.  I also have several Ethernet cables connected to my Verizon Router that I currently use.  I do not use the Verizon wireless feature and would be happy to have it disabled.
I think that the problem may be related to the Verizon router.  Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

    network wrote:

That is likely. Although the Bonjour Sleep Proxy is open source, I do not know of any routers other than Apple's that support it. The router must send a "magic packet" over wireless to wake a sleeping Mac.
Double NAT will also be a problem. BTMM is likely to spontaneously start working for you, if you can find a way to disable the Verizon's router function, using it strictly as a modem, and configure the Extreme as your router instead.
Populate the Back to My Mac fields in AirPort Utility > Base Station with your Apple ID(s). This may or may not be optional; my tests have not yet reached a conclusion.
Make sure you can get it to wake while you're at home, if it does, then proceed with troubleshooting it while away from home.
Leave the iMac's Ethernet port disconnected for now. Over several months of testing I concluded that a sleeping iMac cannot be woken up over the Internet if Ethernet is connected at all, even though it may not be first in the service order. It will wake on Gigabit Ethernet when the "wake" request originates from within the LAN (local Bonjour). This is the same whether I use a Time Capsule or an Extreme.

  • Back to My Mac not working-a diagnosis and a solution

    Hello all,
I own a small business and relied on Back to My Mac while traveling. I have had connection issues with BTMM since MobileMe was discontinued. I have found a solution but it is not an Apple solution. Skip to the end if you'd like the straight dope.
FYI: I have exhausted all possible Apple-centric solutions, to the best of my knowledge. This was verified over the phone during an extensive troubleshooting session with a senior Apple specialist. All Macs and OS involved are optimized (in theory) to work with Back to My Mac. The appropriate file sharing options were checked. Users had appropriate access privileges. I have a valid MobileMe ID that has transferred over smoothly to iCloud. Firewall settings were not the issue.
But before we go further, if you are having BTMM connectivity issues, you might want to examine this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4071540
And see if it does the trick for you. It seems to have worked for a lot of people. But if it doesn't, please read on.
I have an iMac at my office that I connect to. I have a MacBook that I use to make the remote connections. Before MobileMe was discontinued, I read all support docs on how to make the transition to iCloud. Nevertheless, once MobileMe was discontinued, I began to have BTMM connection issues. My Macbook could "see" my iMac, and vice versa, but once connection was attempted, either through "Share Screen" or "Connect As…",  the status bar would run indefinitely and no connection would complete.
First, I tried the Keychain solution indicated above. No dice.
Then I saw the System Preferences>iCloud message that Back to My Mac required NAT Port Mapping and/or Universal Plug and Play settings on my router. I have an old Linksys router, and I was able to upgrade its settings to UP&P, but not to NAT Port Mapping. The situation did not improve.
I went to an Apple Store, spoke with a pair of salespeople who informed me that the problem would most likely be solved by replacing my old router with Airport Extreme, which would automatically upgrade my network to the necessary UP&P and NAT-PM protocols, and if any issues existed after that, they would probably be firewall-related, which I could either fix on my own or talk to an Apple person about.
After installing Airport Extreme, the situation did not improve, and I called Apple Support. I entered the serial number into the web page, and was informed that I was not qualified for tech support because my warranty had expired, even though I had made the purchase the previous evening. I checked the option that indicated that I thought this was in error and that I was in fact qualified, and ten minutes later, I received a phone call from Apple.
At first, I was on the line with a Airport Extreme specialist, who ran down the Airport Utility checklist. With my wife at the Macbook at home, and myself in my office at the iMac and on the phone with the Apple specialist, the troubleshooting began. Once it was apparent that nothing was working, I was transferred to a "senior" specialist who indeed knew everything under the sun about networking and Back to My Mac, at least as far as I could tell. We checked various settings on all devices, Airport configurations, iCloud account validity, my network's firewall settings, etc.
Finally, the specialist suggested we check the settings on my home router, which was supplied by my ISP and not an Apple device. I asked him why. He said that if we enabled UP&P and NAT-PM on my home router, that would probably help make the connection. I informed him that while that might be a short-term fix, I travel as part of my job and need to make remote connections to my office, often from places where I have no control over the router settings. He informed me that because of those "variables" I might very well continue to experience connection issues, and that in some locations I would be able to connect, and some, not.
On the heels of all the time and money spent thus far, I was in disbelief. We spent some more time affirming beyond question that he was actually telling me what I thought he was telling me, and I cordially thanked him for his time and we ended the phone support session.
THE STRAIGHT DOPE: I learned from a senior Apple specialist that network and router settings not only have to be just right at the server location but *also* the remote location in order for Back to My Mac to work. Simply having an iCloud ID is not always enough. If you travel, you most likely have no control over router settings at your hotel, coffee shop, etc., and if you rely on remote connections as part of your job, you can't afford to take the chance that wherever you reside might not be BTMM compatible. I signed up for LogMeIn Pro, at a cost of $59.95 a year. It has screen sharing, file sharing *and* iPhone access, which BTMM does not offer. My remote connections are now almost instantaneous and without issue. Problem solved.
Please note, I have no ax to grind with Apple, I enjoy using their products and believe they are superior to Windows machines. I am also more than happy with the level of expertise, courtesy and efficiency of their support people. The Airport Extreme that I purchased is pretty cool, has kickass wireless signal, and has reduced the amount of wiring on my desk thanks to its wireless printing and hard drive capabilities. I feel a little burned that I bought it for no reason, but I have 14 days to return it, no questions asked. We'll see.
In conclusion, Back to My Mac does not seem to work as advertised. I am curious if anyone has had a similar experience. Hope this helps someone or at least, saves you some time.

Thanks for your thorough post. I too need to use BTMM on almost a daily basis for my job, and it has fallen short countlness times. I too have taken great pains to check all of the typical trouble shooting steps within iCloud and in the Apple keychain on each Mac etc, but after the latest rounds of system updates from Apple a few weeks ago to Mountain Lion, BTMM on one of my Macs is completely broken and unusable. I would concur that if you need remote access for "real" mission critical use, just bite the bullet and pay for a service like LogMeIn. You won't regret it and you will get real software support.

  • Why do I lose internet connection when I put airport extreme into bridge mode to correct Double NAT issue

I reset my airport extreme router the other day because I was too lazy to reset the password on my private network.
I have been reading the advice found on apple support communities and wide web, but the solutions do not solve any problems and often create new ones.
I'm regretting because everything was working just fine.
But I remember having this double nat error when I first set it up a few months back, but now I cannot resolve it.
I would live with the yellow light, but it seems that this double nat error is preventing my playstation 3 from connecting to the airport extreme.
When I put the aiport extreme into bridge mode, I loose all my wireless networks, even when I reboot the airport extreme and the modem.
I try rebooting the modem, then the airport. and vice versa. No internet.
I switch back to NAT/DCHP and the internet works fine on apple devices, but not the playstation 3, and I have the 1 Double NAT error.
I have a plain stock Motorolla modem and I can dial in and see settings (although nothing about NAT). I didn't see where to see them.
I tried setting the DHCP only but it said it didn't like the settings. is there a stock range i could be using?

I have a plain stock Motorolla modem and I can dial in and see settings (although nothing about NAT). I didn't see where to see them.
Exact model .. motorola make adsl, cable and probably wireless modems.. with some modems and some modem router.. we need exact info. What kind of broadband do you have?
I would note.. some of the motorola cable modems seem to have issues with the apple routers. If you are about due to change modems.. now is a good time.. not another motorola.
If the modem is a straight cable modem, the AE must be in router mode.. but you need to power down the cable modem. maybe for 20min so the new router can pick up the IP address.
You cannot use DHCP alone.. the ISP do not give you a block of IP addresses.
You cannot use bridge with a pure modem.. you will find it works.. but only to one device.
The only reason you get double NAT is the failure to pick up the public IP.
    Give the info required..
If you have trouble, I need the actual IP of the modem. the actual IP of the AE WAN port when plugged in. Screenshots are good.

My Time Capsule is giving me a warning that  double NAT situation is occurring and recommends that I set it to bridge mode What is all this about please can it be explained in layman's terms and not martian thank you.

You have two devices....the Netgear and Time Capsule both configured to act as routers on the network. You only want one device providing this service.
I suggest that you configure the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode as suggested to eliminate the Double NAT error. Unfortunately, the Guest Network cannot be enabled in this setting.
No other adjustments are needed and everything else will operate normally...and the Time Capsule will still be providing your wireless network signal.
Once the Time Capsule is configured in Bridge Mode, it would be an excellent idea to perform a complete power cycle on the network to allow things to reset properly.
Just power off all devices on the network in any order that you want
    Wait a minute
Start the Netgear device first, and let it run a minute by itself
Start the Time Capsule next the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time the same way until everything is powered backup
The other option you have is to "ignore" the error and the light will turn green. The Double NAT error may...or may not cause some issues for you down the line. The next time that you update the Mac operating system, or update the firmware in the Time Capsule, it may likely change the Time Capsule to Bridge Mode automatically.
If your Guest Network "disappears", you will know why this happened, and you will have to manually configure the Time Capsule again in Router Mode to provide DHCP and NAT services.
Double NAT can also cause a slow down of web page loading. You may...or may not....notice this.

  • Time Capsule with Double NAT status - Question.

Hi all.. would appreciate some advice.
I have a Time capsule set to DHCP/NAT.
I have a second Airport extreme connected to TC via eithernet (about 100 yards away) set to Bridge to further my signal on a big property.
I have several Aiport Expresses for Airplay only.
I recently called Apple and they told me to set my TC to DHCP/NAT and chose ignore.
I had problems with my computers connecting to the internet (they connected to my network, but not internet.  Or occasionally I would get errors on my MBP that said could not connect this IP address is used by another device).  It was sporatic.  Apple told me this was likely because I have 20-30 wifi devices in my house and my ISP is not providing enough IP addresses.  They told me that DHCP/NAT makes my TC 'be in charge' of these IP addresses.
I am using Frontier service.  Modem from Frontier is Netgear B90 - 755044 - 15.
When I set up this modem, I turned the wifi portion off.  And currently the wireless light on the modem doesn't ever blink, so I believe it is off.
So why am I getting the Double NAT error since my Modem appears to have the wifi portion turned off?
    Thank you very much!

    Thanks again Bob!
I called Frontier... they refused to show me how to put my modem/router in Bridge mode.  Hypothentically, if I did that, would that solve this problem?  Sounds like it would.  They said they won't show me how to do it because they use PPPoE or something and if I put into bridge mode I won't get internet access.  Is that true?  They only use bridge mode for businesse they said.
I never wanted a modem/router.... I wish I only had a modem! .  Maybe I will call them back and ask only for a modem.  Good idea.
    Attaching a screen shots below.
If I go into My connection at the top, hit Edit.... no where in there is a bridge option.
If I go to that green Enabled one under VC's... where it says PPPoE, there is a selection to choose Bridge.
    See below.
But I'm too chicken and I don't know if that is the answer or not.
    Thougths?
    Thanks again Bob!
