Back To My Mac no longer working

For a couple years, I've never had a problem with Back To My Mac. I could control my Mac Mini at home using my Macbook Pro wherever I am. But since Yosemite, I've been unable to use BTMM. Screen Sharing still works fine when I'm at home, but not BTMM when I'm out of the house. Strangely enough, my Time Capsule shows up under "Shared" in a Finder window, but not my Mac Mini.
I've tried deselecting and reselecting Back To My Mac in System Preferences on both my Mac Mini and my MBP. I've tried restarting both machines. But nothing is working.
Oddly enough, it always says "Set up router for better performance" under Back To My Mac in System Preferences > iCloud, no matter where I am and what network I am on.
Any suggestions?

Back to my Mac no longer works after upgrading to Lion
After I upgraded my home machines to Lion, I can no longer access them from my work computer, which is running Snow Leopard. When they were both Snow leopard, it worked fine. How can I get them working again? I don't have control over the OS on my work computer. Is it necessary for me to downgrade all of my home computers to Snow leopard in order to get them talking again?
Additionally the binoculars icon appears in the menu bar all of the time. In previous versions, this would only happen when somebody connected to my machine. Could these problems be related?

OK, so further investigation has addressed the BTMM issue on a remote machine.
With all machines running lion, I was having issues trying to log in to a standard user headless machine already running.  In Snow Leopard, I had no issues with this since you can log in via screen sharing using an admin login that's running a standard login.  Lion allows multiple accounts to be signed in which is handy since you can now run virtual sessions.  This means you can admin the remote computer without bothering the remote user.
The problem was that now logging in using admin login brings up the admin account (which makes sense) instead of the desktop to the standard login.  I applied a similar solution to a problem that was related to screen sharing I found on this board.  What I believe to be the fix is to add the standard user to the screen sharing user list.  Then screen share to the remote account using the standard user credentials.
So on the remote computer, in System Settings->Sharing->Screen Sharing, add the standard user to be allowed access.  Previously I only had admins.  This may not be an ideal solution for what I'm trying to do since the remote computers primary login is the standard user to be used as a common computer, but it now works so I am happy with it.
Now my only "problem" is my AEBS complaining about my MobileMe credentials, but it doesn't appear to have an impact on BTMM performance so I'll quietly wait for a fix down the road.

  • Back to my mac no longer working with iCloud

Now that I have converted my mobileme to iCloud, back to my mac is no longer functioning properly.  As far as I can tell, my AEBS doesn't like my back to my mac login credentials, even though they are correct.  I can log in via settings on each computer with those credentials, but if I try to enter them in the AEBS it won't accept them as valid.
I am able to use back to my mac/screen share on local computers.  I am NOT able to use it on a remote computer.  Before iCloud this was working fine.
I initially didn't think I had a problem until I brought up the Airport Utility on an iPhone and found that there were issues.  I have made sure the firmwares were up to date and that has had no effect so far.
I can only screen share on the remote computer using a third party solution on an ipad (via iTeleport) but that's not an ideal solution.
Symptoms are identical on Lion and Snow Leopard machines (local) to the remote, which is running Snow Leopard.
I do have screen sharing enabled in iCloud.

You can never, never migrate an installed copy of PSE. It's just too complex and you can't get to all the bits and bobs.
First you will have to download and run this:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
which will not seem to do anything, but is necessary to break the links within PSE so that you can pitch the bits manually. Then you will have to go around, not only to applications, but also to your username>library>preferences and most importantly to the library at the top level of your hard drive>application support>adobe, and remove everything you can find. Spotlight will not help with this kind of search, so don't try that.
Then you can install PSE from scratch.

  • "Back to my Mac isn't working properly because your DNS server isn't responding. Contact your ISP for an alternate DNS server address, and enter it in Network Preferences".

Hi, i am trying to setup back to my mac at home but I get the error "Back to my Mac isn't working properly because your DNS server isn't responding. Contact your ISP for an alternate DNS server address, and enter it in Network Preferences".
There is no documentation on how to solve this anywhere.
I have an Arris router set to bridged mode which is connected to a 5th generation airport extreme. I have tried using the google dns servers instead of the one assigned by the cable company in the AE but I still get the same error.
Any help would be much appreciated

New to BTMM, I got stung today with the silly DNS problem message. Solution:
    1) Flush DNS cache with:
    dscacheutil -flushcache;sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
2)System preferences > iCloud > untick BTMM then tick it again. The warning should have disappeared.
    Edit #1
Apologies for the noise. The warning has come back
    Edit #2
Just found out that BTMM is not compatible with double NAT. That's not helpful.

  • Back to my mac isn't working properly

After downloading Mavericks, (which went without a hitch), I am now receiving an error in system preferences stating: Back to my Mac isn't working properly
because the DNS server isn't responding. Contact your internet service provider for a different DNS server address, enter it in Network preferences and try again.
In reality everything wireless is working; the internet the printer iPad works fine.
I went to the Airport utility and clicked on my Time Capsule and it states: Change Airport base station from using DHCP and NAT to Bridge mode.
I done that and everything related to the wireless router runs real slow, I mean real slow. It took just under 4 minutes for my Time Capsule to recognize the computer. Due to this I received all kinds of errors from the printer from Airport Utility and the iPad.
I need a fix please, I've read all the support documents related to this in the support community and either the answers given I have tried with no success or they do not relate to my situuation.
Thank you for looking at this, I only hope you have a valid answer.

  • Back to my mac doesn't work with Cable modem

I have at home Cable modem and a Airport Extreme, both use NAT to distribute internet, so it seems even if I connect the cable modem direct to my home Mac (without the Airport) that the Back to my mac doesn't work. Can somebody tell me how can I turn around this problem? Doesn anybody has it too?
The Back to my Mac panel displays this message when I have the Airport Extreme distribuiting the Internet: Back to My Mac isn't working properly because you may have more than one device on your network providing Network Address Translation (NAT). Try disabling NAT on one the devices.
And without the Aiport: Back to My Mac isn't working properly because it requieres a router that supports NAT Port Mapping Protocol (NAT-PMP) or Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). Make sure your router supports one of these protocols and that it is enabled.

If I may continue this thread, I have the same double NAT issue and am using a DSL modem/router combo. I added an Airport Extreme to my Qwest supplied Actiontec dsl Modem/Router in hopes it would solve issues with Back to my Mac, among other things. The dsl modem supports UPnP to some degree, but BtmM doesn't seem to like it.
Currently the setup uses the DSL modem/router first in line, functioning as modem, NAT, router, but no DHCP (or wifi). That plugs into the WAN port of the Airport BaseSta. The Base Station runs in bridge mode, and distributes the ethernet and wifi connections. I would rather bridge the modem and disable its router functions, and let the Airport handle NAT and routing and wifi and Back-To-My-Mac.
What are the alternatives? Any help appreciated!

  • Back to my Mac don't work

I have 4 computers at home and Back to my Mac don't work with the Mac mini.
I only get there with FTP client, and in Finder appears the address not the name of my computer.
    What is wrong ?

Re-pair them using 'Set Up Bluetooth Device' from the Bluetooth icon in the right-hand side of the menubar. (If that's not there enable it System Preferences>Bluetooth).

OS is important.. What OS is on Mac and what is on the working macbook?
Was the Airport setup from the Macbook? That might be why it works from there..
Does the AE show up in Mac airport utility?
Can you mount the disk in finder and copy files to it/from it??
Did you try a TM reset after mounting in Finder.. so you know it is available?
What about a network reboot.. does it work post a restart for a few minutes/hours/days???

  • Switched networks, then back and now bonjour no longer works

I was testing my neighbors network then i switched back and now my 2 PCs can no longer connect to the printer through bonjour. I ran the bonjour printer utility and it sees the printer on both, but then as it is connecting it says "you do not have sufficient access to your computer to connect to the selected printer" ive tried everything i can think of, i cant get it to wok on either network, and it used to work on mine. Each time it sees it there but gives the same error. I even tried changing the network name and doing it all over agian like the first day i connected them. I can see my shared folders and access files both form the PCs and the Mac. Its only the printers. HELP!!!

    Hi abstractls,
You may be having the same problem as me. If the Airport Express is NOT connected to the internet, the Macs will still work, but the PC print routines say "you do not have sufficient access to your computer to connect to the selected printer" or just "An unknown error occurred during printing". If you reconnect the internet, the problem goes away.
I suspect that the PC is not getting an IP address assigned to it by the Airport Express, and cannot cope without it, but the Mac is OK.
My problem is that I do not want to connect the Airport Express to the net, I just want it to share a printer between Macs and PC. Does anyone know of a fix for that problem? I have told the Airport Express to ignore the lack of an internet connection, but that just switches off the amber light...

  • Excel 2011 for Mac No Longer Works. Wonder if it is Maverick?

I am hoping someone can help me.
I am wondering if this my problem has something to do with Maverick update but my Mac Excel no longer works. I can save a file and it will open once but after that it will open but be completely blank. As for older files, ones that I desperately need, I keep getting this message: The file format or extension is invalid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file"
I have spent hours on these forums and Mac forums reading about other peopel havign the issue and trying to troubleshoot it myself. I have already attempted opening the file by putting it in the shared folder and creating a new user. I have also cached the fonts, eliminated all fonts with warnings and duplicate fonts. I have gone into disk utility and repaired permissions. I have also tried software like Onyx to repair.I have also trashed Word font cache. Nothing has worked. Could someone please help me figure this out. I do have the files on an external hardrive and have tried uploading to a PC or Google Drive Spreadsheet and nothing has worked.
Does anyone have any suggestions or why this is happening. I no longer have the disk so I can't reload. I was wondering if my best bet now moving forward would be to revert back to an older operating system.
    Any insight would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Andrea

Have you attempted to open the troublesome files with a different program that reads Excel formatted spreadsheets? Open them then re-save them in a format Excel will read.
If you use any "cleanup" or "anti-virus" or similarly categorized utilities on your Mac, don't. Junk software like that is very aggressively marketed and is capable of corrupting system and other files, resulting in nothing but misery.

  • Back to my Mac - will it work between iCloud and MobileMe?

Just updated my MBookPro to Lion so it would work with iCloud and my new 4S. Everything moved over OK but there's one thing I'm concerned about: will Back to My Mac work now between machines that are not part of the iCloud account? I ask this because my Mac Pro at the office is still on Snow Leopard (and may remain that way, since I use it for editing+graphics and prefer to keep it clean and stable) and I use BtMM all the time to look at the MacPro while I'm at home. I took the precaution of logging out of MobileMe on the MacPro before I moved the account to iCloud on my laptop so there wouldn't be any weirdness. I imagine that if I went and logged in on it now I would no longer have the option of using BtMM on the same Apple ID anymore, yes? I have another Apple ID that's still under MobileMe, so I wonder if I could start using that one now on both machines under the old MobileMe system pref and link the two machines back together?

UPDATE: forget about signing in with a different MobileMe account once you've signed in to iCloud; even though both prefs exist, Lion will NOT let you sign in to both iCloud and MobileMe at the same time, even if they're different accounts.
Grrrr...guess it's back to Remote Desktop for me.

  • Back to My Mac suddenly stopped working

    Hello
I have a new iMac and a Macbook about 12 months old, both with Leopard 10.5.3. They are both connected wirelessly via Airport Extreme Base Station acting as a bridge with a 4 port ADSL modem router managing the network.
I have been using Back to My Mac - there was nothing to set up - it all just worked when I enabled it and I was able to access the iMac from the Macbook anywhere in the house and vice versa.
However, I now have the message in the Back to My Mac preference pane that it is not working properly because I need a router with uPnP or NAT-PMP. Nothing has changed, though, on the network. I have looked at the settings in the router and uPnP is enabled, and it was certainly working great before - in fact, I loved it!! It was one of the main reasons I bought the iMac.
I'd appreciate any information. I have a .mac account and everything else seems to be going just fine.
    Deborah

Deborah, I just had a similar problem that I managed to figure out with the clues I found on these discussions. My office network had BTMM working fine until we had to replace our DLS modem and then it stopped. The office macs could see and access my remote mac, but I could no longer connect to those office macs.
I recalled reading somewhere, perhaps on a post for an entirely different problem, that both a DLS modem and whatever wireless router you are using can in fact both be trying to distribute IP addresses. I think the problem is called "Double NAT." It doesn't seem to affect the network behavior in any other way (or at least I had not discovered it until my home AP Extreme gave me a warning about the same problem which I fixed a few weeks ago).
When I discovered that the new DLS modem in my office was set to PPPoE instead of Bridge mode, I changed it (my wireless router is set to distribute IP addresses). Still nothing. But then I remembered another post that suggested logging out of my .Mac account, logging back in and turning BTMM off and on. Presto. All is well.

  • Word for Mac no longer working since updating

Since updating to lion my Word for Mac won't open

You're welcome. You might want to check for other PPC apps to avoid being caught off guard again. If you go to the Apple Menu and choose About This a Mac, then click more info, then a System Report, and finally Applications (or Software I can't remember) you can see how each application is coded. Anything that has PPC next to the mane will no longer work.

  • Back to my mac has never worked for me [sigh] - Help?...

    Hi Gang,
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I've never been able to set up Back to my mac. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot to it if you've got a dot mac account, all Apple hardware and (in my case) a static IP address for the Airport Base Station (which is now a 1TB TimeCapsule). I feel like I must be missing something obvious as it seems I see the problem appearing less frequently with posts on and off this board now that 10.5.2 is out. Have a missed a post here which solved something obvious?
    Here's the basic setup.
Home Computer is G5 Tower, always on connected directly to TimeCapsule which is connected directly to cable modem. The TimeCapsule has a static IP address and I have a couple others which are unassigned. Running 10.5.2 with Back to my Mac Enabled.
Laptop MBP moves all over town and country (and globe) with all the same systems and updates.
I have 3 different dot mac accounts (all full user) and have rotated through them to see if that would help. I'm not 100% certain which one the desktop is running, so I've registering all 3 (one at a time, of course) to see if it would magically show up in the shared bar. I'm not entirely certain if I'd need to log in and out to see that. Am I?
I run Apple Remote Desktop 3 when I'm on my local network, but have never used it across the internet. Tried it last night from London and realized there are configuration issues that I'm probably not aware of and just have not had time to troubleshoot it whilst on a family trip here.
I did (only for this trip) password protect the screen (in Security prefs), but I thought that would at least present itself for entry if I was successful enough to actually access the G5 Tower. Yes? No?...
I'm just kind of stuck and it would be so nice to be able to access the desktop on this trip. Does anyone have any suggestions for a fix while I'm on the road?
    Very much obliged,
    Mick

    Thanks Dogg,
I had a moment of light when I was able to access my wife's computer (which was on) and then remotely access the desktop. For about 5 whole minutes it worked! I checked the settings there and then made the really stupid mistake of trying to change the Screen Sharing settings away from Remote Management to Screen Sharing, and then totally lost my connection. I feel so dumb. I'd forgotten that turning one off to get the other on would obviously not work. [sigh]
But at least I saw it work briefly on another computer.
Any idea how to turn BACK on Screen Sharing or Remote Management, remotely?
    much obliged,
    Mick
