Back to My Mac suddenly stopped working

I have a new iMac and a Macbook about 12 months old, both with Leopard 10.5.3. They are both connected wirelessly via Airport Extreme Base Station acting as a bridge with a 4 port ADSL modem router managing the network.
I have been using Back to My Mac - there was nothing to set up - it all just worked when I enabled it and I was able to access the iMac from the Macbook anywhere in the house and vice versa.
However, I now have the message in the Back to My Mac preference pane that it is not working properly because I need a router with uPnP or NAT-PMP. Nothing has changed, though, on the network. I have looked at the settings in the router and uPnP is enabled, and it was certainly working great before - in fact, I loved it!! It was one of the main reasons I bought the iMac.
I'd appreciate any information. I have a .mac account and everything else seems to be going just fine.

Deborah, I just had a similar problem that I managed to figure out with the clues I found on these discussions. My office network had BTMM working fine until we had to replace our DLS modem and then it stopped. The office macs could see and access my remote mac, but I could no longer connect to those office macs.
I recalled reading somewhere, perhaps on a post for an entirely different problem, that both a DLS modem and whatever wireless router you are using can in fact both be trying to distribute IP addresses. I think the problem is called "Double NAT." It doesn't seem to affect the network behavior in any other way (or at least I had not discovered it until my home AP Extreme gave me a warning about the same problem which I fixed a few weeks ago).
When I discovered that the new DLS modem in my office was set to PPPoE instead of Bridge mode, I changed it (my wireless router is set to distribute IP addresses). Still nothing. But then I remembered another post that suggested logging out of my .Mac account, logging back in and turning BTMM off and on. Presto. All is well.

It asks if I want to allow Adobe flash player to access my camera, I answer yes but there is no video capture and the cameras are not recognized. This all worked perfectly last week!

  • Why has the volume control on my Mac suddenly stopped working?

    Every time I push any one of the three volume buttons in the top right corner of the keyboard on my mac, I get this image:

    And no matter how many times I push the buttons, the volume will not adjust and that circle with a line through it appears at the bottom. When I try to play music, there is no sound.
    At the top right of my screen where there is usually a volume bar, there is now nothing. That bar has also disappeared.

    There is no water damage or anything. I got that checked at the Apple store. I also have Apple Care + but didnt let them give me a new one yet because I have photos on this that I have no yet backed up that are very important.     If the phone shows the "connect to iTunes" screen, the data on the phone is most likely lost.
    Connecting in recovery mode is your only chance to use the phone again, besides getting it serviced by Apple.

    Let your ipod die. Then when it is dead charge it adn turn it back on. After that it should be fine.

  • Mac HDMI to TV suddenly stops working

    10.9.4 mavericks macbook pro retina to TV via HDMI
    using an HDMI cable to watch movies on my laptop macbook pro retina.
    was working this morning, and watched a movie. then I go to work, and come back and now the exact setup is no longer working.
    it does not show any display in the preferences menus, and the TV is just blue without any input.
    cable is secure, nothing has changed. nothing.
    edit: actually I did pull the HDMI cable out while the two were connected this morning.
    tried restarting, reconnecting, nothing
    ... very frustrating, no idea why computers suddenly stop working for  no reason whatsoever. maybe someone hacked my computer this afternoon while I was gone? it's just a random failure.
    Any help?

    If you are having issues with connecting to your TV, then check out the article below to look at resetting the NVRAM as well as starting up in Safe Mode to see if anything changes.

    Have a look in System Preferences -> Sound -> Output.
    Plug the speakers out. Do you now see "Internal Speaker" as the name from the Built-in device? If you replug your speakers, is it now changing to "Headphone?

    Do you get sound on any apps e.g. Music and Videos but not others ? If you do then have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the Music and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound.
    Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar.     Firefox suddenly stopped working with Mac OS 10.6.8- keeps blocking even Safari- will jot download , open pdf file downloads-- wasted a lot of time of several University experts- we can't locate work out why- x3 quit everything, download, reinstalled twice, machine switch on/off- something seriously wrong and wasting alot of time.

    On PDF issues, disable the Adobe Acrobat plugin so that PDFs open in Apple's own native PDF reader instead.

    I don't understand the part about blocking Safari. Can you describe that problem in more detail?

    Yes I am using Apple Mail. The account settings haven't changed and were working fine. Then suddenly gmail emails stopped coming in on the mac. I can still get my gmail online and on my iphone, but not the mac. Frustrating....

    I'd recommend  also reposting in the Snow Leopard forum because Mail is part of SL If both sending and receiving is not working then contact your ISP and see if they have any known issues. If they don' t what I've found to work is removing the account in Mail and then recreating it.

    You can disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and use the external Adobe Reader application or Preview application instead.

    When the display turns off, it is not clear whether the computer has halted, or whether the display subsystem has failed.
    Those tests determine whether:
    a) Your Mac software had stopped working  OR
    b) Only the display had stopped working
    If the pressing the Caps lock light on the keyboard lights the Caps Lock light on the keyboard, some software is still running -- your Mac has not halted.
    If pressing Control-Eject on the keyboard, followed by the Return key shuts down your Mac, the software was still running.

    --Yes, the problem is ONLY in the display subsystem
    --No, this is a computer-wide problem such as a kernel panic

  • I just brought my MacPro in for service and they replaced my hard drive. However, now my disc drive has suddenly stopped working! Is there anything I can do to fix this without having to take it back in for service, again!?

    The nearest service center is 2 hours from my house and my computer isn't under warranty anymore, so I need alternative options. I'm just frustrated that my disc drive was totally fine until AFTER I took it in for service. I just paid a lot of money for a new hard drive from the apple store and now my disc drive has suddenly stopped working correctly. I tried with multiple CD's and DVD's...loading a disc, but my computer would just make a weird loading noise and then eject the discs. Now it has started fighting taking the disc, so I have stopped trying. Is there anyway to fix this problem without taking it in for service again and paying another boat load of money?

    when you say that your disc drive is damaged, do you mean your MacBook Pro’s hard disk drive, or do you mean its SuperDrive (the CD/DVD drive)?
    When you’d updated your MacBook Pro to Mavericks, did the installation succeed, and subsequently freeze up? Or did it freeze up during the Mavericks installation?
    Which version of OS X was installed on your MacBook Pro before you’d installed Mavericks?
    Are you currently able to boot into the Mavericks recovery partition? To see if you can do so, hold down a Command key and the R key while starting up your MacBook Pro.
