Back to out of the box?

Can I get my MacBook back to its original condition? If I can, how?

Yes. Take the original gray disks that came with your Mac. Boot to the first disk (if you have more than one) and do an Erase and Restore.

  • Factory Recovery (Out of The Box Recovery) not working properly

I've got a Satellite L505D-G6000, 4 months out of warranty, go figure right, running windows 7 home pro.  I've had an issue that I needed to get it back to "Out of the box" condition again.  I ran the Recovery as laid out in the instructions "Press the "0" key while starting the computer" and get through the majority of the recovery, then it reboots and goes into System configuration.  Now it hangs on the configuration part and if it's interupted it disables the "Admin" login and will not recognize any USB devices OR the built in buttons on the laptop.
    Any suggestions?

    Torloc,
When you say it disabled the Admin login, you mean that the administrative account in Windows is disabled? Have you tried doing the recovery a second time? Maybe it just had a problem the time.
    doug5769 and mmack012000,
You both say you have the same problem. Can you be a little more specific? Are you using the same laptop model? Where exactly do you run into the problem when doing the recovery?
I'd just like to try to find out what exactly is happening.
If you can't solve your issue and no one in the community can help, you can try contacting support to speak with a tech support agent at (800) 457-7777.

If it is just out of the box, I would take it straight back to Apple and ask them to fix it.
Why should you have to mess around with fixing a device?

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

Is there a way to reset Lightroom back to when I first started the trial. In other words how it first came "out of the box"?
I read some tutorials and I would like to start fresh.

Not sure what your goal is here, but there are a couple of things you can do.
In preferences>General - Reset all warning dialogs.
In Preferences>Presets - Reset all default develop settings.
Finally, if you really want to start fresh with all your photos, go to File>New Catalog.  Note: the new catalog will not have any photos in it. You will have to re-import all your photos.
If you are still on the 30 day trial and you are hoping to start over with a new 30 day trial, the answer is No!

  • Help Please - on a VC that works out of the box with MAC before I sellup

I have to declare that I’m somewhat frustrated at the moment and I could do with some good advise please bare with me while I explain.
I have recently converted from all types of PC systems and MS OS to Apple. The conversion was based on a few drivers.
1, My wife finally has decided to “learn” how to do her own web work instead of asking me to look up this or that for her. So as she was starting from scratch I thought MAC.
2, At the same time I had a play with Vista at work and disliked it. I was using XP & W2K at the time.
3, I wanted to update my home hardware, which was 3 years old.
4, The accountant said I hadn’t spent enough on IT last year.
5, New project work in the planning that required video/audio work to upload onto the web and everyone said MAC was the best.
So having looked around and done what I thought was enough research I started investing. To date I’ve invested £4500 plus.
    Started by buying
iMAC 24” 2.8 Gz Intel with 4GB ram (for the home office)
MacBook Pro 2.4 with 4GB ram (for out and about working)
    iPHONE 16GB (which is great)
VMware Fusion was installed for those things that I couldn’t live without until I found a suitable replacement like MS Money, Paint Shop Pro, MS Office etc. Installed XP.
Tried Open Office found it to clunky and hard work working off files for MS Office that others sent/required. Ended up buying Office 2008 only to find VB macros don’t work in Excel and all my company spreadsheets still need PC MS Excel to run so back into XP via Fusion.
Then to MAIL which is great on the iPHONE as I can easily monitor my 5 email accounts, what a result. But now I come to attach JPG files as I would in outlook and they open into the content of text in the mail and will not stay closed but disrupt the message. Wholly unacceptable to my way of working with no cure.
Scanning next, so I down loaded GIMP to replace PSP which I find useless so back to PSP I go again via XP & Fusion.
Next and finally the VC project, Now please bare in mind that all I want to do is shoot film, upload it to edit it and then mount it on the web page. I have no desire to become any form of expert in the field just get the job done.
So reviewed iMovie to understand the spec. Realise it has limitation and reviewed FCE which seems to plug the gaps and boarders on being more professional.
At this point I must say I’m not totally new to this subject as I have used Studio8 and a JVC GR-DVL166EK video cam a couple of years ago and got on ok without any issues simple plug and play with great results.
Having reviewed the standards that the software is reported to work too without any publicly declared exclusions or exceptions by Apple I went shopping for the VC. (I didn’t know of the forum at the time and to the best of my knowledge Apple don’t advise of its existence in any product information on anything I have bought.)
I buy a Panasonic HDC-HS9 for £700 which doesn’t flaming work despite the fact that it should based on all the standards quoted by both manufactures and there are no disclaimers from either party that it won’t work.
I have reviewed the compatibility list on the support page (now I know its there) and find that the Panasonic HDC-SD5 does work. I reviewed the comprehensive detailed model spec on the Panasonic web site and there is no differences between the to models at all accept the HDD.
    So why don’t it work?
*At the end of the day can anyone please recommend a VC that will produce high quality results without the need of a 3rd party software to connect and upload files convert and muck about instead of getting on with the job.*
And if all the publicised specs don’t allow you to conclude compatibility how can you protect your investment? Where do we legally stand and where is the accountability to the consumer.
    <edited by host>
I am that fed up with the last 3 months of mucking about Bill Gat*es may just get me back.
Thanking anyone in anticipation for some meaning advise and help.
    Regards
    Alan

Hi, and thanks for you interest. The problems is that whether I'm using iMovie or FCE I get to a stage where the thumbnail image is present but if you try to play, import or any other action in either app it closes down and a message comes up " The Application Final Cut Express/iMovie quit unexpectedly - Mac OS X and other application are not affected" then asks if I wish to relaunch. I then hit the report to Apple button and afterwards relaunch. I was recommended to use Voltaic which I have tried, it worked but is to much mucking about for something that should work out of the box.
This problem happens on both the iMAC and the MacBook so quite sure it's not a OS software issue. All software update are up to date also.
    Any ideas?

  • How do I start over and bring my MacBook Pro to a brand new out of the box state?

I have a MacBook Pro with Retinal Display purchased in June 2012.  I have backed up once using Time Machine. How do I put it back to the brand new just purchased out of the box state? Any ideas?  I have done this with windows computers, but never a Mac.

To restore your MacBook to factory settings, you have to use Internet Recovery. Follow the steps:
    1. Press Command, Option and R keys while your Mac is starting, and open Disk Utility.
    2. Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    3. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. This can take hours because your computer has to download OS X from the App Store.
After restoring the computer to factory settings, open App Store > Purchases to download iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand

  • IPod Touch 1st Generation doesn't work directly out of the box?

I just bought a first generation iPod touch and first things first I plug it into my PC. Nothing happens on the iPod and on iTunes I immediately get a message saying "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore it before it is usable with iTunes." So I hit OK and click yes to the message about restoring it to its factory settings, considering that's how it should be anyway since I had literally just taken it out of the box. I finally get a reaction from the iPod, and it's a solid white screen followed by the apple logo, and then for about 5 minutes iTunes says it's "prepaying the iPod for restore..." followed by the error message "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored, an unknown error occured. (1604)" Then the iPod disconnects from iTunes and proceeds to be frozen at the Apple logo screen. I have looked at all the troubleshooting walkthroughs and none of them work because I have never seen a screen on the iPod other than the Apple logo, it seems as though the only way to fix this is if I just take it back and get a replacement

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.

  • HP Pavillion Does NOT work Straight Out of the Box after Purchase

My daughter bought a new HP Pavillion from Office Depot before starting computer classes at the university.  The first one would not work at all and after the tech folks tried all that they could and it would not work, the Office Depot staff exchanged it for another one.  Straight out of the box, it does not work. It crashes constantly.  My daughter has spent HOURS that she needs for assignments on the phone with HP tech support.  Here is where she stands with the situation now:  She bought the extended warranty, but apparently that does not cover computers that don't work.  The HP warranty....does not apparently assure that you get a working computer either, even when it's just days old and won't function.  So....after spending from about 1p to nearly 6p today on the phone with HP tech support, she is not assured that it will work.
They are calling back on Friday to see.
So if it is NOT working, are we just out of luck with a piece of junk that does not function except as a word processor?  That won't connect to the internet without crashing?  We have been given no options or assurances.
( Post edited by Moderator)  When you buy a computer, it should work when it's brand new.  If you have a warranty, does that mean that HP stands behind their product and refund the consumer's money when it doesn't?  The new HP Envy printer did not work, due to a defective ink cartridge enclosed with it.  Does any HP product work at all?

  • Clean Install VS Time Machine for "out of the box" performance

    Hi all ^^
Just under a year a go I made the leap of PC to Mac and have never looked back, im super happy with my Mac however I have been experiancing a decrease in performance since Ive been using it, back when I was using a PC I clean installed the OS once a year and then proceeded to add my files back, thus restoring my PC to full performance.
Ive been reading around these forums looking at Time Machine backups, hoping to see 'how much' gets restored when you perform a recovery from time machine, and from what I have read is that everything gets restored. So my question is purely for some advice and clarification
"If I want to restore my Macbook to its "out of the box" performance, Is it viable for me to use a Time Machine back up?"
    if not
"If Time Machine Back ups wont help restoring performance, Would it be possible to Clean Install and then extract purely the Files from my TM Back up?" I read another user had issues, the Mac recognised the files belonged to another mac and he couldent use them.
So I wont waffle on any furthur, but im looking for the easist way to clean install or restore performance to my Mac, a long term solution I can use each year
    Please and Thank you
    Em

    Thankyou for your answer
Im quite a clean freak when it comes to my PC, I keep my desktop bare, things I dont use remain unloaded.etc
I think as I am without a Defrag or Disk Clean up tool I feel abit helpless to maintain optimal standards. I not very experianced with the in's and out's of computers but all I really want on my Mac are my Files, Applications and the OS, nothing more.
I appreciate your time and experiance, so ild ask instead: In your experiance is it worth performing a clean install? I have hadly any junk on my Mac, and from the tone of your post you beleive a program such as MacKeeper would be sufficent?
Futhurmore a clean install once a year isnt worth it? I depend alot on what people have told me, so I may have fallen victim to a rumour :S

  • T3i won't turn on out of the box

I just bought a Rebel T3i and it won't turn on out of the box.  I've done everything exactly as the directions say, but each time I flip the "on" switch, nothing happens.  I've managed to turn it on but ONLY by flipping the "on" switch, taking out the battery, putting it back in, then flipping the battery door closed (entire sequence with the "on" switch in place).  So far, of all the things I've tried, this is the only thing that works.  Has anyone else had the same thing happen or can help me figure out what might be wrong?  I live in Africa and had the camera brought here with a friend, so unfortunately, just returning it isn't really an option at this point.  Thanks!

And you are certain the battery is charged before you try?
Otherwise, returning, or warranty service may be your only options.

  • 6 hr battery life on a Droid Eris out of the box

    Hello eveyone.
I need help I just changed my blackberry storm for the Droid Eris.
Right out of the box and charged the battery lasts 8 hrs tops then it's decresed to 6 hrs.
THhis drop was due to my twitter and facebook usage which is very low and some emails that come in now.  I cant surf the net due to the battery drop.
My old storm would go on for 2 days 1 full day with heavy usage. This is a new phone...what gives?
    Thx.

It isn't the phones fault. It is due to an under amped battery. It is a strong phone that needs more juice. I would be hard pressed to believe the motorola droid or any other android phone has a huge difference in battery time. If there is a huge difference you don't use the phone as much as some of us do then. I purchased the 1750 battery from seido. Would have got the next one up the 3500 if it had been the price it is now. I recommend buying two and an external charger. I am getting ready to buy another 1750 and charger. This will increase the life of the battery for two reason primary reasons. Proper time for charging and the fact it isn't in use makes the charging cycle much better and effecient. I work in a hospital and get my phone searching quite often, from one netowork type to the next. I can get a solid 12 hours with 20% left at thend of the night when I get home. I have FB chat up litterally all the time bloo, I don't twitter that much but I get updates. I get mail pushed via gmail now. I do use wi-fi off and on as well. Since I'm in doors I don't actually leave the gps on, waste of power in general. Any of the newest smartphones have an underpowered battery. BB doesn't use use the web in the same fashion as android does and it isn't multitasking which is one of the big killers ont he phone. Use a task killer, select the improtant apps to ignor and make sure it cancels stocks and mp3 store, waste of cpu there. You can maximize the power you get with the battery you have, but the 3500, will add a small bit of thickness, but who really wants a hardworking model for a phone. She (the phone) just doesn't feel the same. Sorry to ramble so much, but it gets me when people say it is the phones fault or HTC is the cause. I disabled sense UI for a week and used the open UI that android has. I lost an hour and a half on the average daily, so I have to say from doing that and then turning it back on and getting the missed time back sense UI isn't the cause. I didn't notice any extra pps running when I used the open UI so I have no idea why it acted that way. It coudl have been caused by background jobs that the Sense UI uses but wasn't since it wasn't enabled and the services still ran, now that I mention that I need to check that out. It is the wrong battery fo the job, plain and simple. Replace your moto droid batteries and you will see a huge difference too. You can charge the new batteries for less time(4 hours or less pending on charger) and they will say full, but you get bad results when you short change your batteries charge time. To get the most out of my batteries, I charge them for a full 8 hours, the reason I am getting another battery and ext charger with dock.(http://store.androidcentral.com/mobi-products-cradle-w-spare-battery-slot/5A100A6693.htm) and the battery I am getting (http://store.androidcentral.com/seidio-innocell-1750mah-extended-battery/8A37A6399.htm) or the bigger battery (http://store.androidcentral.com/seidio-innocell-3500mah-extended-battery/8A37A6374.htm) You can find better prices but these are for reference. A note on airplane mode: It disable all radios in the phone. You will not receive calls and txt/mms messages. Basically it turns your phone into a PDA. You can enable the wi-fi for access. Since I replaced my battery I don't do it that often but sometimes I find it neccesary to use airplane mode for some of the remote desktop use I do on my phone.

  • Out of the box behavior of the Pagination control

Why does the Pagination invoke the PageFactory callback upon page count change?  And when it does invoke it, why is it with currentPageIndex=0?  Should there be an API to remove this listener if this is undesirable behavior?  If we know we may need to alter the Page Count after construction of the Pagination control, would it be best to remove the old one, and construct a new one for display at that point since the current implementation seems to behave inconsistently when one wants to alter the Page Count post-construction and/or callback configuration.
    Please consider the following scenario:
The user is viewing a TableView of items.  Below the TableView is a Paginator whose PageFactory callback fetches rows from a database and calls TableView.setItems(<results>).  There are 3 pages and the user is on the 3rd page.  Only 5 rows remain out of a possible page size of 20.  The user decides to delete the 5 remaining rows on page 3 from the table/database.  Now it would seem natural at this point to conclude that page 3 no longer exists and we would want to the user to return to page 2.  If we simply call paginator.setCurrentPageIndex(currentIndex - 1) then we will correctly transition the user to Page 2, however Page 3 will remain displayed in the Pagination control and if the user browses back to that page, he is met with the "There is no content to display" label.  So it would seem natural that we could presume this happening and instead call paginator.setPageCount(2), then paginator.setCurrentPageIndex(currentIndex - 1).  That way the Pagination control reflects an accurate number of pages.  Unfortunately, this results in TWO callbacks to the PageFactory method, one at currentPageIndex=0 and another at the correct index.  Sometimes the widget that is constructed in the PageFactory callback (TableView) doesn't get displayed properly (disclaimer: speculation ahead) probably due to some asynchronous nature of the two competing callbacks (?).
I'm struggling to get a handle on this control.  So far, my experience with TableView has been pretty good.  I love the features you get with this Pagination control out of the box, but some of the choices that were made with regards with what APIs to expose confuse me.  The frustrating thing about callbacks is that sometimes you can get caught in this callback hell where there are all sorts of callbacks being invoked and you don't really know why.  Often times, the Javadoc does not indicate that there is a default listener being applied to certain property that may invoke one of these callback.  I don't mean to sound like a rant.  Overall my experience with JavaFX 8 has been very positive so far.  I can usually always find a workaround if a come across a weird issue with an out of the box control.  Worst comes to worst, I'll write my own Pagination control.
    Thanks for your time.

For anyone else that may come across this post.  I was able to find a workaround by simply using a field, boolean pageCountReset, and then bounding all of the logic in my page factory call back with a condition checking for this boolean value i.e. if (!pageCountReset) // continue, else // noop.  Then, if I need to reset the page count, I set my boolean to true so that the page factory callback results in a noop.  Because the pagination control under the hood will make currentPageIndex=0 (as I talked about above) if the page count is reset, I then have to be very explicit and either call my page factory callback manually to refresh the current page if it still valid, or I call pagination.setCurrentPageIndex(<new index>) so that the page factory callback will be invoked and pageCountReset will be false at this point, so I can successfully transition pages.

  • Out of the box my new Tablet Z2 wont take anny charge..

    Hi!
Out of the box my new Tablet Z2 don't take any charge. I have charged it a few of hours now but the charging LED don't turn on.
I have tested to charge my phone with the sony charger provided within the box and it works.
I have also tested to charge with an other USB cabel but that dont seem to work either.
Thanks for your help! // Oscar

Before taking it back to the store you could just try to press and hold the power button and volume up at the same time until the tablet vibrates. Then try to start it up as normal again. If it still doesn't start, I would suggest that you follow the advice above and take it back to the store.

  • OIM 11gR2 - Out-of-the-box Approval Workflows

Does anyone know of any good resources that describes the out-of-the-box approval/provisioning workflows of 11g R2? I have searched Google back and forth but found nothing. Some of the workflows are obvious by their name (such as default/BeneficiaryManagerApproval!1.0), but others are not so clear regarding their flows.
On that same note, can one of the out-of-the-box approval workflows be configured to route to an approval group instead of single users?
    Thanks for your help!

Instead of searching for docs in google i guess reverse-engineering on your own will be the best way to understand the approval workflows. Navigate to OIM_HOME/server/workflows/composites. It will contain all the approval workflow zip files. Unzip the required one which you want to understand and there will be a .jws file in it. Now open that in jdeveloper and open AprrovalProcess.bpel and composite.xml. It will show how the approval routes and what are the business rules written, everything. It is the best way to understand the approval workflows.
In the same way u can make changes to the out-of-the-box approval workflows also. See this OBE tutorial to understand how you can assign the approval to a group
    http://www.oracle.com/webfolder/technetwork/tutorials/obe/fmw/oim/oim_11g/Request_Workflow_for_Self_Registration/request_workflow_for_self_registration.htm
Also please try the approval workflow given in the developer's guide which covers most of the basics.
