Is there a way to take a sequence from Final Cut Pro and record it back onto a dv tape?

This is helpful but I'm lost. I basically have my HDV camera connected to my computer via firewire, and need to just play the sequence and record that sequence back onto a dv tape. can u provide some basic images or where to start/ I've gotten as far as view > video playback.....but I get lost from there...

Copying iMovie back to tape: "your firewire camera is not powered on"

I'm trying to follow iMovie 6 instructions for copying a movie back to tape.
I connected my camcorder to the computer with the firewire cable, and it shows up in the Share-->Video Camera menu as an attached device. (It's a Canon Elura 100, btw.)
So all seems well until I start the procedure, and then I get a "Cannot Export to Camera" error message that says "your firewire camera is not powered on or is not available."
My ever so slow brain thinks this might have something to do with the fact that I'm using the DV/firewire cable that I used to import the footage into my iMac, and maybe it only sends stuff OUT the firewire end, and won't send video the other way?
Do I need a different kind of firewire cable?

I bought this camcorder from Amazon.com (USA) and I have not daisy-chained it anywhere. I've only connected it to one device at a time. It is capable of receiving digital as well as analog video, and can convert analog to digital.
For example, I used my stereo-video cable to transfer footage from an old VHS tape played by our VCR to my Canon Elura camcorder via the Canon's AV terminal.
Once the tape was safely transferred into my Canon camcorder, I then plugged my DV/firewire cable into the Canon's DV terminal, and the firewire end of it into the iMac. iMovie saw the Canon camcorder and imported all the footage very nicely.
Now I would like to transfer the edited footage from iMovie back to a mini DV tape, and my iMovie help file says I can do it, but it's a little sketchy on what cables I should be using.
The firewire/DV cable I used to send the footage IN to iMovie isn't working to receive the edited footage OUT of iMovie. So maybe I need a different kind of firewire cable?

How do I duplicate my original (uncompressed) footage back onto tape?

If anyone can answer this I will be really, really grateful. I've posted on Canon HV30 user forum and also on Creative Cow, but no one on those forums seems to know the answer.
Question is how do I make duplicate copies of my original mini dv tapes?
I am using my cannon hv30 as a deck. I have an IMac 24" running OSX 10.5.4 and Final Cut Pro 6.0.4.
I've managed to import footage from my canon HV 30 using digital audio settings
On HV30 VTR Mod

These settings are fine for capuring video but I can't get final cut pro to export back to tape on my canon.
Error message is that the audio/video settings aren't compatible with the footage I'm trying to export. Since this was the original footage I captured using these settings in the first place, not sure why not?
I also have a number of .mov files on my lacie hard drive which I need to put on tape for a friend, but I get the same error message as mentioned above. These were originally imported via I.Movie. Is it the same problem? Or is it a separate issue?

What are your Sequence Settings?
If you converted to Apple Intermediate Codec to edit, the procedure is as follows:
1 Make sure your HDV camcorder is properly connected to your computer and turned on
before you open Final Cut Pro.
2 Insert a DV tape into the HDV camcorder.
3 Click anywhere in the Timeline or Canvas to make it the active window.
4 Choose File > Print to Video (or press Control-M).
The Print to Video dialog appears.
5 If you want Final Cut Pro to start recording automatically, select the Automatically
Start Recording checkbox.
6 Select any Leader or Trailer elements you want to include on your tape, as well as start,
end, and looping options. A progress bar shows the progress of encoding from the Apple Intermediate Codec back to MPEG-2 HDV and gives you a time estimate for when the encoding process will finish. A dialog appears instructing you to press the record button on the camcorder.
7 Press the record button on your camcorder, then click OK. If you selected the Automatically Start Recording option, the camcorder automatically begins recording your program to tape. The camcorder stops after the program is recorded to tape.

Please help. black screen when copying back to tape

I would be very grateful of any help. I am trying to copy a movie back to tape however when i do so it results in the recording on the tape being completly black. it has gone through the process but just left a black screen.

... and it did work before...? not all European camcorders allow a DV-IN...

finally: iM handle both video standards, even allows to import PAL footage into a NTSC project.. but cameras are 'hardwired' to one standard.. make sure, your project has same standard as camera.. (besides: Apple lingo is a little 'cryptical': '25 frames per second' = PAL, '30fps' = NTSC)
it could have happen, that you incidently created a NTSC project with your PAL footage. and now, it is impossible to playout THAT into/onto (english??) tape ...

Recording back to tape

I was just wondering if someone can point me to some instructions on how to write a previously "captured" MiniDV tape back to a MiniDV tape. I imported them all into iMovie '08, as that was where I was doing my editing. I made the mistake of taping over the original MiniDV tape. I would now like to re-write all of my "clips" back to a MiniDV tape so I have a backu. All of the clips are timestamped; however, when I write them back to tape using the "print to tape" feature of FinalCutExpress 4, I lose all of the dates. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you lose the dates ? I know for sure that you lose the original timecode (each recording starts from 0, whatever is the original timecode of the clip), but I thought date and time were preserved even if not visible in FCE. Never checked dates myself though.
Have you tried with iMovie ? but probably going back to iMovie from FCE for this purpose is no longer an option for you.

Transfer back to tape question / How to do a portion

How do I transfer just a portion of my entire movie in FCE back to tape.
I have about an hour in one sequence and I only want to transfer the last half back to tape... I know how to do the basic print to video but how do I designate a specific segment?

Ah I think I get what your asking. There are no buttons in the timeline. Just hit the keyboard 'I' for in and 'o' for out in the timeline and edit points will be placed at the playhead. These points will automatically be reflected in the Canvas as the canvas and timeline are just different visual expressions of each other. I like marking them in the timeline cause I can see where i'm at in relation to everything else. But tis up to you!

I need to print back to tape from my edited footage using Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 and my Sony Z1...cant work out how to do it can anyone tell me there workflow to do this?
Should the camera be in VCR mode??? and how do you record?

I recently tried this (with Sony Z1) and it wouldn't work - until I trashed my preferences:
FCP gets it’s knickers in a twist from time to time and if you trash your preferences it will often sort things out (with no harm done to your project etc etc) . . .
Download FCP Rescue :

Once it’s downloaded, hit Backup first, then hit Trash. If the Trash does no good, hit Restore and everything's as it was. (Easy-Peasy)
FCP Rescue is freeware but there’s provision to make a donation if you wish – (it’s well worth it)

Saving HD Project Back to Tape

I purchased a Canon HV20 a few weeks back and have had no troubles importing the videos to my iMac. Initially I wanted to keep all of the vids on the computer but when I saw that a 23 minute video is taking up 17 GB I decided saving to the hard drive was a baaaaaaaddd idea.
So now I'm editing my vids and trying to save them back to tape, however it's telling me that the video needs to be re-encoded first. Not only that but it's taking ridiculously long to re-encode (and I'm on a Dual Core Intel). I've read on the support pages that this is normal for HDV footage, but why?
Am I also going to lose quality with this re-encoding? The question was asked before but wasn't fully answered. If I'm going to lose quality with the re-encode when saving back to tape then I'm not going to use iMovie HD at all...

There are lossy and lossless compression schemes. Lossless compressions don't compress all that much, but you are assured that you never loose any quality during editing or conversions. Lossy algorithms loose a little bit of quality every time you have to re-encode. Sort of like a copy machine: if you just make a single copy, it looks almost as good as the original. But if you take the copy and make another copy, and repeat that process, it gets a little worse every time. Most video compression algorithms in use are lossy.
Mini-DV based HD camcorders record in MPEG-2. MPEG-2 is a little challenging to edit directly, so most video editing applications first convert it into a format that is better suited for editing. That format needs a lot more space. Your 23 minute clip is probably about 5 GB in MPEG-2 format on the tape, but 17 GB after decoding for editing. To save it back to tape, it has to be converted back to MPEG-2 format. MPEG-2 encoding is a pretty slow process. And yes, you will loose some quality along the way.

Problems recording back to tape from FCE

I can't figure this out. For some reason when I go to record my video back to tape, either throught print to video or directly recording off the timeline, the video breaks up, gets digitized, and sometimes the sound freezes.
My set up is a 15" iMac running FCE HD 3.0 with two daisy-chained external hard drives (one for video and one for music). I have a firewire connection to a Panasonic gs-500.
Everything is rendered, the audio is mixed down and I have even tried shutting everything down and then restarting fresh with camcorder on and plugged in.
Any ideas?

With my iMac G4 1 Go ram, I had this kind of problem, ruining my print to video operation.
So, I develop a simple"protocol" to avoid this:
Do a cold start of your mac, turn on your camcorder,plug it. Start FCE, open just one project, and just the sequence to be exported, select all clips in timeline, render it, do an audio mixdown and... (here's the magic) scroll the playhead from beginning to the end of the sequence, with some playing .(it's seem that this process load the cache memory, at least in my own experience)
This procedure always works for me...
If there is a song bought on iTune Music Store, you can't use this track.
Try a test version with just one minute of movie. (set in and out point in timeline and do the print to tape operation).
Does your hard drives are fragmented or full at more than 80% level?
As said earlier, Firewire ports on G4 iMac are connected together and the handling of two HDs plus a camcorder may drive you into problems.
Try a new project with just one drive, or simply the internal one.

Write back to tape

I have several video files that I captured from a MiniDV camcorder using iMovie. I know have lost the tape and would like to write these files back to a MiniDV tape. Can someone outline step by step what I do to achieve this in FinalCut Express (or iMovie if it would be easier). If possible, I would like to maintain the date after writing back to tape (e.g. so I can watch on the camcorder and the date is proper). All of the files are saved as "[date of recording].dv" inside the "iMovie Events" folder. Any help would be GREAT!!!

Not a big deal regarding the date. I anticipated that it would be lost. How do I go about writing back to tape (e.g. is there a step by step guide somewhere that I haven't been able to find). I keep getting the following error:
Could not find an HDV camera or deck.
Please connect an HDV camera or deck to your Macintosh and put in "play" mode.
I am not trying to write back HDV video, nor is the video that has been captured HDV. (all shot on a cheap Sony DCR-HC28 - in both regular and Widescreen)

Maintain DV widescreen format when copying iMovie project back to tape

Using iMovie HD 5.0.2 and copying a project back to tape via the camcorder, but the 16:9 widescreen format gets squeezed into 4:3 ratio. Not sure if this is fixable. In the Preferences, I turned off the auto pillarboxing under Import, but did nothing as I suspected. In Playback checking Play DV project video through to DV camera also yielded no change.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

Outputting 720p30 back to tape

Hi,
I have FCP 5.0 on a 2.5 GHz G5, operating OSX 10.3.9
I can capture my 720p30 footage that was shot on a JVC HD101 through my JVC HD50 deck fine. On the timeline I need to render before i can view... can someone help on this? (all sequence/capture presets are the same)
I can still cut though but when it comes to spitting it back to tape, back to 720p30 HDV, I can't. I am going through the print to tape function, the computer takes control of my deck and starts recording but when i review there is no image on the tape....?

There is a difference between HDV footage and HDV footage converted to standard definition (SD) for burning a DVD (not an HD nor blue-ray DVD).
When you print to tape a HDV content from FCE HD to your HD camcorder, there isn't degradation (altough your media was converted to Apple Intermediate Codec for wotking in FCE HD and re-encoding to be printed on tape. Re-encoding always means degradation, but you cannot see it with naked eyes.)
When you burn a DVD in iDVD (version 6, current), all your footage is converted to MPEG material in Standard definition (720X480 pixels). since iDVD doesn't support high definition DVD.
In a near future, iDVD (iLife 7 or 8 or...?)(or another application like Roxio TOAST) could support HI-DEF DVD (if you own a HI-DEF DVD burner, to play in a HI-DEF DVD player hooked to a HDTV...).
At this time, your superb HDV content will be monitored in HI-DEF.
Now you can print to tape and monitor on HDTV from your camcorder to see it in full resolution (HD).

Hi,
If I check in TOAD, then I see that the max size of the tablespace is unlimited. Btw, Tablespace XYZ is actually an index tablespace - dont know if this makes a difference. The max size of the data tablespace is also unlimited.
Using the query select * from user_ts_quotas or dba_ts_quotas, I dont see tablespace XYZ or its data tablespace in this result set. I'm not sure why.
Maybe giving the user unlimited quota on the tablespace might solve the problem - i dont know, but if it does, then I have to ask why has it worked all the time without this and only now it's giving an error??
The user has been doing the same thing everyday for the past couple of years and only now getting this error.

24p Back to Tape; LP or DVD?

Hi,
I am trying to output my DVX-100 24p advanced footage back to miniDV tape. Since the footage was imported into my sequence removing advanced pulldown, is there a way for Final Cut Pro to reinsert the flagged frames onto miniDV tape properly?
Also, if given a choice to project my film onto a theater screen using LP mode on a miniDV tape or DVD, which format would you choose for higher quality?
Any info much appreciated!

I'm in the PAL world so don't have much experience with pulldown, but I believe you can add pulldown in a number of ways, either by dropping your 24p into a 29.97 sequence, or as an option when printing to video.
MiniDV at LP or DVD? Interesting question. I know LP doesn't look as SP but probably still a lot better - and less hassle - than DVD.
That said, you're probably going to output your movie to DVD anyway so...
