Back up 2 computers (1 a PC) to Time Capsule?

We use the Time Capsule for WiFi and also to back up my MacBook Pro.  Can we also back up my husband's PC to it?  I can't find mention of this in Support.

Apple does not offer an application to back up a PC to the Time Capsule, but other vendors do.
If you want an application that is similar to Apple's Time Machine, you might want to take a look at Genie Timeline Pro.

It is not cheap, but has worked very well for me in the past. Other users will likely have some other suggestions for you.

The advantage is CCC has built in routines that "bless" (see the Terminal.app command "bless") the
os x installation so it will boot properly on the new volume it is being installed on.
Disk Utility simply copies (restores) files from one volume to another. Many times this works just fine.
Sometimes it won't boot afterwards. Most of the time (as long as there are no system files missing
or corrupted) a person may "bless" the drive and restore it to working condition.
CCC is not a "magical" application, it is in fact a front end to applications that already exist separately
in OS X (asr, hdiutil, diskutil, bless, etc.).
It doesn't matter to me how you do it. It's your time not mine. Everyone should spend some time
behind the command line in terminal. I do many tasks using the command line, including and not
limited to complete system restores, backing up data, disk partitioning, installing software, disk
repair, permissions repair, ACL management, restoring data, managing disk images, network
management, user management, file management, etc. Many people are fearful of the command
line. I feel just the opposite, I'm fearful without it.

Back up is very slow on 2 tb time capsule. After 2 days only 60 gb of 320 gb completed. Have connected ethernet cable. Any suggestions?

Yes, that's terribly slow.  You should get somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-24 GB/hour via Ethernet, assuming there isn't a lot of conflicting network traffic or your Mac's CPU is under very heavy load.
Are you sure you're actually using the Ethernet connection, instead of WIFI?   To check, turn Airport off.  If the backup fails, it's on WIFI.  In that case, you need to set Ethernet as the "preferred" network, via System Preferences > Network.  Click the "gear" icon at the bottom of the sidebar and select Set Service order.  Then drag Ethernet above Airport.  When both Airport and Ethernet are on, that will make OSX select Ethernet over Airport.
If that doesn't help, see #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Computers connecting to internet via time capsule are reporting no internet connectivity.  PC is reporting default gateway has changed.  How to I correct this?

Am having trouble with maintaining a stable wireless network via the Time Capsule.  Am running 1 Mac and 3 PC on a Time Capsule wireless in bridge mode connected to a Verizon wireless router.  Verizon wireless is turned off and the Time Capsule seems to be staying connected to the Verizon router.  When any of the connected computerss goes to stanby, they often report the internet is no longer available.  The PCs say the default gateway has changed ans the Mac simply reports the network parameters have changed.  What do I need to do to the Time Capsule to stabilize the wireless network?

It is unlikely that the gateway changes.. but anything is possible.. sorry I am not in the US.. is your service adsl or cable?? What sort of lease time does the public IP have? Some cable companies now rotate then on the hour I noticed.. others on about 3months.. but most it is one day.
Track it yourself.. see what gateway address the TC gets and if it is rotating with the IP.
If your client computers are running Mountain Lion.. the plain fact is, they are not particularly stable.
Wireless is worst.. ethernet tends to be ok.. but for instance Laptops updated to Mountain Lion can be pretty flakey.. with the TC.. and it is the combo that is more the issue. People report improvement with clean install of ML. BUT there is still a bug there that causes the ML to be less than fantastic.
I experience it occasionally even with a dlink wireless router.. after a wake from sleep.. the network will drop out and need to be manually connected back.. I have to admit I expect no better from Mountain Lion. I could load Snow Leopard on it and it would drop once every blue moon.. but I got the laptop with ML so I live with it.. !!

  • Can I back up my LaCie and mbp on my time capsule

    Hi to you all
I have a MBP and am backing it up on my time capsule. Works perfect.
Now i have bought a LaCie external hard drive for my photos.
Can I use my time capsule to back up both? (MBP and LaCie)
There will be times that I make backups having the LaCie connected to my MBP and times that its not..
    Is that a problem?
Thanks for your time to help me out.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course, but make sure that your external disk is formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". If not, Time Machine may refuse to back up your external drive. Apart from that, your MacBook Pro and the external disk will be backed up.
It doesn't mind if your external disk isn't plugged when a Time Machine backup is being made. In this case, only the MacBook will be backed up, and the external disk will be backed up the next time you plug it in

  • Backing up my old PC to my new Time Capsule

I recently purchased an iMac for myself and macbooks for my daughters. I would like to backup the hard drives from our old Dell PC's. Can I do this with my time capsule or should I buy a separate external hard drive to back those up to?

yes, you can do this with your time capsule. i just did it with my old dell, and it seems to have worked out fine...

  • TS3679 I got the time capsule and it seems to be backing up everyday. For some reason I am running out of local disk space, and it looks like around 30 percent of the space is used in "Backup". Shouldn't back up space only be used in the time capsule?

I would also like to know how can I delete/release the "backup" space used in my local hard drive? Why do I need the time capsule if it's using my local hardrive to back up?

  • How to back up files on my windows computer to time capsule, How to back up files on my windows computer to time capsule

I bought a time capsule now I want to back op photos that are on my PC.

You keep posting but give no details..
What Windows version are you using?
Have you loaded airport utility and bonjour? This helps windows find apple resources.
Have you tried opening the TC .. it will probably not show up as a simple network resource because you have not set the workgroup in the TC.. go to the utility.. go to the disk file sharing page.. and turn on guest account for read and write access. Give the correct name WORKGROUP usually to workgroup.
Using Windows Explorer type in the TC address.. \\IPaddressTC or \\TCname.
If you hope the name is going to work, it must be SMB standard.. short no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.
You can then copy files, in standard way.. I recommend you create a new directory under the single directory .. DATA or whatever it is called.
    Copy and paste, drag... same.
To backup use the now available directory as target for backup utility which must support network drives.. naturally.

  • Backing up a external hard disk attached to Time Capsule

I have a hard drive attached to the USB port on my Time Capsule where i keep iTunes music and iPhoto Library, however my problem is that this drive does not get backed up through Time Machine. For some reason Time Machine cannot 'see' it? Any advice?

Time Machine does not support backup of a NAS device (e.g. HDD inside or connected to TC). If your USB HDD is formatted HFS+, you can connect it directly to your Mac and TM will back it up.

  • Backing up different drives in two locations, using Time Capsule

I am backing up my iMac using Time Machine to two external drives - one is a 3 TB WD My Book, and the other is a Time Capsule. I also have an additional 2TB WD My Book external hard drive, on which I keep all of my media (iTunes, Pictures, video files, etc.).
I want to be able to back up both the iMac & the 2TB My Book to the 3TB My Book, and back up only the iMac to the Time Capsule (due to limitations of space on the Time Capsule. I can't find a way to do this.
Any guidance on how to approach this one?
    Thanks
    Colin

Yes, but you must tell Time Machine each time you "swap" drives, via +Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk.+
All you have to do is make sure each is formatted properly. See #5 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for instructions.
In this case, it will be a good idea to give them clearly different names, such as "Work Backups" and "Home Backups," so you're sure at any time which one is which.
The first backup to each one will be a full one, so they'll take a while. Thereafter, Time Machine's next backup will include all the changes made since the last backup +*to that disk,+* so each one will be complete.

  • Computers or devices on my time capsule?

i was wondering how to check on how many computer and device is hook up to my time capsule, i just upgrade my internet and it got realy slow, i think some one is stealing my internet

Welcome to the discussion area, bighen!
i was wondering how to check on how many computer and device is hook up to my time capsule,
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    Click the Advanced (gear) icon
Click the Logging & Statistics tab
Click Logs and Statistics the bottom of the window
Wireless Clients will display the AirPort ID and IP address of any wireless device connected to the network
DHCP Clients will display the MAC address or AirPort ID and the IP address of any device connected by ethernet or wireless
i just upgrade my internet and it got realy slow, i think some one is stealing my internet
While it is possible that someone may be on your network, it's more likely that the slowness is being caused by some sort of interference from cordless phones or another nearby wireless network. Try different channel settings for your wireless network to see if you can find better airspace.

  • Computers not seeing Time Capsule

    Hello,
I have a Macbook Pro and a G5 Mac pro and I bought a 2 Terabyte Time Capsule to back up my files on. When I originally tried to set it up, I went into Time Machine in the System Preferences and my computer saw and recognized the Time capsule. While going through the setup, it asked me if I wanted the time capsule to establish a wireless connection and (stupidly) I said no because I didn't think that was necessary. Now neither of my computers can see that the time capsule is even in the room. The Time Capsule has a blinking orange/yellow light, as opposed to the green light it had when I first powered it up. Can anyone tell me how I could reset the time capsule and get the option back for it to establish a wireless connection?

The Time Machine configuration and the Time Capsule configuration are separate issues. The orange light indicates that there is some Time Capsule configuration issue. I'd first try to use the AirPort Utility utility connect to your Time Capsule. If that is unsuccessful, try resetting the Time Capsule by pressing in the reset button for some seconds while you apply power. If that doesn't work, try temporarily connecting a Mac to the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable until you can identify the problem and finish the configuration process.

  • Do I need Time Capsule for my back up needs?

In my office, I have an iMac 24" 10.5.5. My secretary uses a PC and the server is a PC. At home, I use my Macbook, and my wife and kids each have laptops (4 of them total).
I want to make sure I 'back up' everything properly at the office and at home. Is there a way to backup both onto a single deal like Time Capsule? Or do I have to have two separate units? Is Time Capsule a wireless backup, or does it have to be connected to the computer you want to backup?
    Help!
    Bob

The Time Capsule is not really meant to used as a portable device, so it would have to be kept in a single location. Presumably this single location would be at your office where your iMac is. The only problem with one location is that your MacBook would only backed up when (or if) it's at your office. And I don't know if that happens and/or if you're away from your office for extended periods would that be acceptable (to not have a backup during that time).
Both computers could backup to one Time Capsule assuming there is enough disk space to do so and I'm unaware of how large the hard drives are that you have in each computer. And the Time Capsule can backup devices over both wired and wireless connections.
