Back up concerns

I am a photographer and have too many images of course. And they have been scattered on harddrives and dvds here and there (in multiples of course for back up purposes) but I want to consolidate everything.
And I was leaning really towards to a mirrored drive set up, but have read people having the power supply or connection or fan become an issue and boom, can't access any of it. (yes I know they can be yanked and reinstalled elsewhere as long as the drive isn't fried) But something I didn't think about is if you delete from on drive, it does it from the second and so a misstep on deleting can be a problem. (I am not overly concerned about this as I tend not to delete for safeties sake) but its something to add into the mix.
But I could get two external stand along drives and just copy what is needed to one and then copy to the second drive with carbon copy cloner or such to make a second copy. Its more work but it seems to be a little safer from screw ups on the drives, connections and humans. And can be stored separately if need be.
And of course there is NAS options. The real downside here to be is cost. I wouldn't need to worry networking it over the internet, but the idea of using my airport base station to wirelessly access and work with my files is very appealing, but I also want a drive that I can attach to the MacBook directly and be somewhat portable. It seems most NAS options are only designed for the network and not direct connections and tend to be on the larger than what is comfortable for traveling with.
And any drive I have looked at when I do a search about shows a lot of people unhappy with it, lol, and sadly people are more likely to post negatives and I understand that but its a shame because it has kept me from pulling the trigger.
Money is tight and I want something to be able to expand overtime.
I was looking at the Hitachi SimpleTech Duo Pro with 2 TB, which I would mirror and have 1 T to actively work with.
But there are so many options even with cases and adding ones own drive.
I am not 100% sold that the NAS is worth the extra cost either.
And when I get the drive I will be moving gigs and gigs of info over and I was told not just to drag and drop it because its more likely to have errors and to copy things over. Is this true?
So what do other people who have been through this have to say is a good option for dilemma? I am sure there are quite a few that have been down this road and any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thankis.

+So is there a concern about copying versus drag and dropping? Is one more likely than the other to cause errors?+
In real terms there's no difference between dragging and dropping a file/folder and doing a clone but I lean towards regular cloning rather than trying to keep track of what needs to be backed up. I've no idea if it makes a difference to the drive structure and if heavy fragmentation has a real effect on reliability (but gut feel would be that it might)
+older airport base station with g speeds, can one attach any harddrive to it and use it or does it need to be a NAS drive?+
As far as I know (don't use NAS myself) you can attach the drive to the base station and share it (but somebody else here might have better knowledge/suggestions on that)

  • Why might extracted Snow Leopard MacBookPro drive no longer boot under IMAC Lion?

I'm hoping someone can give a  likely explanation for the following sequence of events, and also recommend some next steps.  I've been backing up, using Time Machine on a partitioned drive, my 2008 IMAC with Lion and my 2008 MacBookPro with Snow Leopard.  Being out of town for the last 3 months, MBP backups were not possible and Murphy's law kicked in as the MBP refused to boot, no chime and black screen.  Tried all the discussion group suggestions and then returned home to visit the Apple store.
    1. Apple store said it was my logic board and repair would be $310, but if the hard drive was a problem Apple Repair would just swap it out.  Apple store would do backup of the drive before sending it for repair if I provided an empty drive.
    2.  As I didn't have a spare drive, I  purchased an OWC USB 3.0 enclosure kit  and inserted the drive from the MBP.
    3.  Plugging into the running IMAC, it came up and everything looked good.  TIme Machine recognize the new drive and included it in its list of devices to NOT backup.
    4.  I decided to see if I could boot the IMAC from this MBP drive by doing a restart with the option key held.  It gave me the choice and it worked.  Everything looked good and I was able to update my mail and to print.  I decided to have Time Machine do a backup and included the IMAC internal drive in the list of devices NOT to backup.  Time Machine warned that this MBP was a new computer and that i'd not be able to go back, which concerned me as the whole purpose is to be able to move to a new system if necessary.  I did a backup anyway and it copied about 25 GB of some 158 GB so it must have been an update.  Everything looked good.
    5.  I then did a restart and came up under Lion.  However the MBP drive was no longer visible on the desktop, but the system recognized that the OWC MBP drive was USB connected.  This was a concern.
    6.  I did a shut down of the IMAC and removed the MBP drive.  Rebooted IMAC and then inserted USB MBP drive.  It came up this time. Its contents looked good.
    7.  I then did a restart with the option key held.  It gave me the choice to boot from the MBP drive as before and I took it.  However it hung with a gray screen, circle with slash, and spinning wheel.  No activity from the MBP so I forced IMAC shutdown and removed the MBP drive.
    8.   Booted the IMAC, but can not get the MBP drive to appear on the desktop although it is recognized as a USB device.  No activity from the MBP drive as indicated by no flashing of its light.
I'm mystified as to what has happened.  Have I corrupted the MBP drive, or is it likely a hardware failure?  I'm thinking about a new computer, but was staying with Snow Leopard as it was only way to keep my scanner working.  It was momentarily convenient to be able to boot into Snow Leopard and to work as usual.  What can I do with my TIme Machine backup of the MBP if the MBP drive is corrupted?  Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Pete, but it doesn't solve my problem.
Apple does something to the recovery partition to make it invisible. When I was trying to setup my 16GB USB stick drive as a "Recoverable Partition", since I don't have one on my main Lion drive, it made it invisible also. But during the process it failed to finish but has left my USB drive invisible under Lion and nothing that I've tried has been able to undue that. (See Above). What is it that I need to do to get my USB Flash drive visible again under Lion. It is visible under Snow Leopard and it is visible under the lion install utitlties (I made a installer DVD from original internet downloaded Lion installer) but not under disk utilities on lion or the lion desktop! I've reformated under both the above(Snow Leopard & Installer utilities) were I had access to the USB Drive but that didn't undue whatever Apple does to make the recovery partition and my USB Drive invisible because once I boot back into Lion, it's still not there! So the $64,000 question is how do I get my USB Flash drive visible again under Lion?
Hope this help you to understand my situration.

  • Should I defragment disk after deleting BootCamp ?

    1. I made a mistake - installed Windows on Mac via Boot Camp (Now I know that I won't need Windows anymore).
    2. Then I deleted Windows and restored Boot Camp via BootCamp assistant. Hopefully.
    3. To restore the normal boot speed I did PRAM reset
(Turn it on, immediately after the display turns gray, press and hold Command + Option + P + R. Continue holding until you've heard the system chime 3 times.)
4 Now. Should I optimize Mackintosh HD drive like disc defragmentation ? Since what happened is that by removing the boot camp partition, it has greatly altered the "optimization" of your mac.

    alabanco wrote:
Yes. I have restored to one partition Mackintosh HD drive.
So. As far as the idea of cloning internal to an external drive and then restoring it back is concerned. Is there any special procedure for that ? Can I do that on one Mac or will I need another one ?
Unless you decide to clone frequently just use Disk Utility (DU) to make your clone:
    1. Start up from your Snow install DVD by holding down C when starting up.
    2. Choose your language and use the menus at the top of the next screen to start DU.
    3. Start DU;
    4. Drag your internal volume to the source box;
    5. Drag your external partition (or volume) to the destination box;
    6. Choose Erase Destination (if you are forced to do so to restore); and
    7. Click restore.
    8. Test your clone to make sure it is bootable.
It will take an hour, more or less. Then, reverse the process to get your OS X install "compacted" on your internal.

  • Bose MIE2i headphones stopped working with IOS5

They we're working just fine before the upgrade, now the volume and track choosing does not work, the music plays during phone calls  but the microphone works OK.  I don't think anyone will have an answer until Apple sorts out the software (but I am hoping)  but I have now lost heaps of the utility I need from the phone.

I eventually found the problem for me.  The Bose controls are very sensitive to moisture and it was sweat from wearing them in summer or down the gym that was causing the problem.  I took two pairs back under warranty but the third I have protected with a bit of cling wrap everytime I go to the gym.  It looks ugly, is really inconvenient etc but I dont think many headsets would have waterproof controls.
When moisture gets in them all the things described above happen, buttons dont work, voice control comes onrandomly, it dials out to numerous people in the address book (at 2am in the morning that leads to calls back from concerned friends).
    hope this helps.

  • Arch Linux Labor & Dependability

At the moment I am trying decide which Linux distro to switch to. Preferably after I finish a build I would rather everything to automatically update without human intervention. I prefer a very minimal maintenance environment. Windows has been nothing except a maintenance pig, so you can see why I don't want to deal with that in another OS. I've heard that the Arch community can be unpredictable. Arch Linux + Xfce has grabbed my interest for some time. I have researched it a lot already. I'd like to get some opinions from the people who actually use it before I switch over to it.

    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Replacing Windows 7 entirely on my laptop with a solid Linux distro.
Does Arch Linux in your opinion meet what I am looking for? Is it labor/maintenance intensive even after a final build? Can it be a virtually maintenance free environment once you've configured everything? Sorry for the broad questions.

They do test upgrading from one release to another though, and provide instructions detailing any steps required beyond just updating the packages.
That said, I don't have first hand experience performing such an upgrade, so I'm just speculating based on the documentation.
Gullible Jones wrote:As for Zenwalk. It's pretty nice, but it's also a very small project, and it shows. Many of the packages in its repo are broken, or have missing dependencies or dodgy install scripts. I love the idea of it, but I don't think it's ready for prime time yet.
Ahh that's sad to hear, because I really like the look of it too... so much so that on a couple of occasions in the past i've come close to trying it on my main workstation.
toad wrote:I'd definitely stick to the rolling release principle.
I definitely wouldn't. In fact, it's basically the only thing I dislike about Arch.
Right now my local (Debian) server is hosting a snapshot of the entire Arch repo (well, core/extra/community) taken on 2011-02-24 and I've stopped regularly pacman -Su 'ing against a normal Arch mirror. I made another repo section in addition to core, extra and community that sits ahead of them in pacman.conf and place fixed versions of any packages I find usability bugs/issues with in there.
I've never been happier, and doing this has stopped the looking at other distros that I had started feeling the need to do.
At some point i'll take a new snapshot and do it again (i.e. usual non-rolling release model).
I'm most likely going to make these repos publicly accessible and take 'fixed package' submissions from anyone interested in the near future... the main thing holding me back is concerns regarding hosting/bandwidth requirements.

  • Unity Cobras Import changes speed conversation

Hi we are running latest Unity export and unity connection tools and are migrating from unity version  4.0(4) SR1 to unity Connection version 9.1.1.20000-32
The issue is that when we  export from Unity and import to unity connection, the following gets changed:-
Conversation volume is set to low
Conversation speed is set to fastest, although the playback is slowest
The default are set to medium and normal
    (phone menu settings)
we can fix this by bulk edit and change everything back but concerned at why the data is getting changed and what else might have been changed that could cause us issues later. Never happened before during migrations from Unity to Connection. I assume  the versions are  supported with Cobras ?
Anyone seen anything similar ?.....TIA, Jeff

just to follow up for everyone - version 8.0.31 for the Connection Import tool was updated to handle this.  this version is now posted on CiscoUnityTools.com
Short version is backups prior to Unity 4.0(5) don't have per user speed/volume stored for messages (as opposed to converation speed) - speed was added in 4.0(5) and volume in 5.0.  The Import needs to check the version of Unity being restored and convert a value of 0 (slowest or quietest) into 100 for speed (normal speed) and 50 for volume (normal volume).

  • Blackberry 8520 LED Off Centre FACT !!

Ok so i bought 8520 on orange a few weeks back and i can honestly say its the best blackberry i have owned in 5 years.
However, there is a major manufacturing error !
The LED is to the right of the front fascia screen so you dont get the full glare of led as you would otherwise do with the rest of the models out available on the market. I thought it was just my handset but having seen a few handsets from orange, they are all the same.
How i noticed this flaw is due to having purchased BeBuzz, works great if you tend to view the led lights from the left.
Find out for yourselves guys, its really annoying.
Blackberry you MUST sort this huge issue out. If anyone has noticed or those you have only just found out from my post, please reply back your concerns.

Probably - if it happens again. Chalk it up to a fluke occurrence for now.
I get the message on my iPad that it can't connect to the iTunes Store - While I am in the iTunes Store or the App Store happily navigating from one tab to another.
You can try rebooting the iPad to "clear the cobwebs" but if it is OK now, I probably wouldn't be overly worried. Rebooting being holding down on the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

  • HT201269 I am trying to transfers my iPad 2 apps to me new iPad Air, but some of the apps did not back up on the computer.  Every time I go to back up the old device, some of the apps don't get transferred.  My big concern is the Olive Tree Bible Study wo

I have the Olive Tree Bible Study app, which is one of the best tools I have ever used for study and within the app I purchased several resources/concordances that are very useful (plus they had up in the wallet, but very worth it)
I had it on my iPad 2 and when I went to back it up on my iMac, the app doesn't populate in the apps tab.  This also applies to some of my games but I'm not that worried about losing those.
I am trying to get those particular apps on my iPad Air.
Has anyone else come across an issue like this?
Thanks and I appreciate anyone's time.

Go into the App Store from your iPad and select Purchased, then select Not onThis iPad, and download the apps that you want.  Because you already own them you can download them again for free ... provided that you are using the same Apple ID as you used when you originally purchased them.
In fact when I look up the Olive Tree app, it seems like the main app is free in any case.
Once you are in the app look for some option to restore purchases.

  • I need to get back to ff4. I know this came up before but I don't have a link to the answer. My concern is the loss of use of Roboform.

I need to get back to FF4. I did this in the past but lost the procedure. I need to get to FF4 so that Roboform tool bar works.

    Thanks for the right fix.
By the way RF is now up to7.4.1
Also when the install of FF5 ran it said that the Roboform toolbar was incompatible and said there was no upgrade. That is what sent me searching for away back to FF4. So I didn't even look at RF's site believing there was no upgrade available.

  • Question concerning backing up itunes' music's meta data...

That big ole xml file with your music's information contains an absolute reference to your music files. Now if i were to reinstall my OS and somewhere in this process the letter of the drive containing my music files changes, is itunes "smart enough to recognize that this is the same music that is now in another location (specified in itunes preferences)?
If not how then can i backup this information and re-import it so ALL song information is retained in the fresh install? Where my music is stored on a 2nd hard disk.
Is there any way to tell itunes to store the metadata, settings, etc. in another location so i don’t have to ever do all this again?

    Hi, gbm2b.
Generally speaking, iTunes isn't smart enough to recognize a song file with a new path reference as being the same one as it was at an old reference.
Although it did get a bit smarter with iTunes 7 in dealing with changes to the reference under limited circumstances, that hasn't been very well documented and I wouldn't expect it to do so in the situation you're describing.
The best suggestion I can offer is to make sure, at least initially, that you replicate the path to the files on the current installation - default settings would be C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\My Music\iTunes - on the new installation. (User Name itself remaining the same.)
For some other ideas, have a look at Hudgie's User Tip which deals with transferring music from one computer to another. But that's more or less what you're doing, although to be specific you're transferring music from one computer - in the present - to the same computer - in the future.
Post back with any further questions.
    EDIT:
And for iTunes, it's the .itl file that is more important than the .xml file. Make sure to take them both along for the ride.

  • Question Concerning Time Machine Back-Up

My hard-drive is officially full. I want to delete pictures off of my hard drive but I dont want to assume that they will remain on my Time Machine. I read something when I opened my Time Machine application and saw that it said something about "Deleting Old Back-Ups". I have tons of pictures that I would be really upset if I lost, I need to delete these pictures because my Macbook is full, but I dont want to loose these pictures. It is safe for me to delete my pictures or should I back them up on an external hard drive that is not in Time Machine format. Best Solution to this problem is much appreciated.

"Best Solution" is probably a new internal hard drive. You can buy ones that are up to 750G that will fit your MacBook. If you're using the original HD in your black MacBook, it is probably only, what, 80G? Maybe 120? Even an upgrade to 500G would be a huge gain and doable for less than $100US.
Buy a new drive, buy a USB SATA enclosure (macsales.com offers these as kits; other places may as well) and use a free tool like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to clone your current HD to the new drive in its enclosure. Then swap the new drive into your MacBook and it will be just like your old one, but with lots of free space
"Second Best Solution" is using a different external drive as long-term storage or as a host for your whole iPhoto library:
