Back up copy of 10.4.1 ....

My ibook came with 10.4.1 BUNDLED dvd, so it's over the 4.7gb size of dvd's that I've bought. I am such a clutz it's mandatory (as well as just good measure) that I back up my OS Disk 1, because I am often in need.
How do I do this with a DVD that is too large? How do I create a bootable disk of only 10.4... without the extranious software I do not want? Several people have told me that their Install disk is less than 4.7, and therefore simple to back up. Is there a way to extract only the OS info, and then create a bootable copy?
Is there someway to buy bigger dvd's without getting a dual layer - as my burner is not dual layer? Will my burner burn larger than 4.7g (shouldn't that only be restricted by the size of the disk?) When you call apple they say they have no idea how to do so, and to please buy the whole new system for a back up... oh sure 140 dollas, no problemo!
Any suggestions?

The procedure for copying the DVD is in Disk Utility help.

The formats are mostly self-selecting when copying the system disc DVD.
If you have AppleCare, you can also make a bootable CD of TechTool 3.1.1

  • How do you make a back-up copy of the OSX Leopard Install Disk 1?

I'd like to make a back-up copy of +Leopard Install Disk #1+ but I only have one DVD read/write machine onboard the Mac Pro.
Can I insert the Leopard DVD, copy it to my desktop, remove it from the drive, insert a blank DVD and burn the contents to the blank DVD?
I'm trying to create a simple bootable Leopard DVD that will enable me to (a) boot up, then restore my System HD from a Time Machine Archive; and/or (b) run +Disk Utility+ from a source other than the main System HD if necessary.
I know I can do these things from the original Leopard Install DVD but I'm trying to preserve it and use it as little as possible in the event I need to reinstall Leopard.

In addition to Malcolm's instructions I want to point out that you need a Dual Layer
DVD+R (or -R) for this. Those are quite flaky and some might not work or not work well when you burn them. I was recommended Verbatim DL DVD+R as being reliable. try those.
also, instead of burning to a copy of the install Disk 1 to a DVD you can clone it to a partition on your hard drive. Just make a small partition, insert the DVD, select it in Disk Utility and click on "restore" tab. select the DVD as the source and the partition as the target and hit "restore". this will give you a very fast bootable installer right on your hard drive.

    Welcome to the WD Community.
    1) I assume I can  just hook the unit up via USB to my Mac and use iPartiion to reformat the drives, assuming each of the 4T drives will be seen by iPartition as a separate drive. That much seems straighforward.
Yes, and in case you ipartition dont see the unit properly, you can use the disk utilities on your Mac and you will be able to reformat the unit to make it compatible with your system.
    2) Is my next step to reinstall the WD software and how do I do that? I've downloaded the Drive Utilities and Securities install apps - I assume I just run these with the drive still connected and that's all I need to do?
    Yes, just run the applications.
    3) What about the firmware update for Mac - when should I run that??
Normally, firmware updates are released to fix any issues that you might encounter on the drive. the latest one was released on 9/24/2014 and it fixed an issue with the drive dropping off of the list after system wakes up from standby mode.
    5) And what about the "My Book Live Duo Setup" app for Mac - is that for a completely different model? What's the difference between "My Book Live Duo" and "My Book Duo"? It's these little things that I find so confusing.
Those are different units. The MBL Duo is a NAS (Network attached system) and the My Book Duo is a DAS (Direct attached system)
    6) Lastly, when I have all the software installed, is that when I follow the procedure described in the Knowledge Base article ID 5724, "How to install a My Book Live or My Book Live Duo on Windows (8, 7, Vista, or XP) or Mac OSX for the first time"? Or is that procedure only for "My Book Live Duo" but not for "My Book Duo"??
That procedure is for the network units, not for your drive.

  • Back-up Copy of Install Disk?

My new G5 came with OS 10.4.4, which I have since updated to 10.4.7.
I would like to know if I am allowed to make a back-up copy of the Install Disk, and if so, how would I do this? Since I must launch the computer with Install Disk 1 in order to Verify/Repair my startup disk, which I do somewhat frequently, I would feel better with having a bootable copy handy, just in case the original gets damaged.
I would greatly appreciate any advise.

  • Can't get ok_code &F03 (green back) from copied standard_fullscreen status

    Hi SDN,
we are on WAS640. I have a Z-Program which uses FM
    REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY.
Depending on different cases the ALV shows different tables using different t_outtabs. As for the different ALV tables, I also need differnt GUI Status...
Hence I copied the Standard Status called STANDARD_FULLSCREEN to Z_STATUS1 to X...
Now I notice, that all the ALV Buttons like Filtering and Sorting, which are defined in the pf-status under "Application Toolbar" work fine. Here I also added new buttons.
Under "Function Keys" in pf-status there is the ok_code &DATA_SAVE (the disk-symbol) - this is also accessible, bu the next oks like green arrow &F03 or yellow arrow &F15 are not accessible.
I have to change the navigation, as there is sometimes a long history in the program running, and sometimes ittakes 5 or more clicks on the green, yellow or red exit arrow to get back to the initial view of the program.
When turning on Debug mode via /h during runtime, I can see, that I get the ok_code &DATA_SAVE, but nothing happens for the navigation arrows - no debugger comes up. Why is that?
For the access of the ok_codes I follow the ALV FM and set up a form like this:
    FORM uc_benutzer USING r_ucomm TYPE sy-ucomm
                  r_selfield TYPE slis_selfield.
    * save stuff
      IF r_ucomm = '&DATA_SAVE'.  "works fine
      ELSEIF r_ucomm = '&F03' OR r_ucomm = '&F12' OR r_ucomm = '&F15'. "does not work
           LEAVE TO TRANSACTION 'ZPMIM'.
       ENDIF.
    some help appreciated,
    kind regards, matthias kasig

Ok, If you get in the PAI you can check what the value of the OK_CODE is? SYST-UCOMM.
Then you can check whether or not this is handled. Note that it is good practice to copy the value of the OK_CODE to a temporary variable.
It's custom to set the PF-status everytime in the PBO (initialization module) of the screen.

  • Recovering missing tracks from back up copy

Somewhere along the line I stuffed up & I now find that I have many more tracks loaded onto my iPOD than I have in my itunes library. I must have deleted them somehow when I was trying to update the album art by cutting & pasting. What I do have is a duplicate copy of my entire 'My Music' folder that I made a couple of months back.
I'm pretty sure that I could set itunes to look for & import songs not in my current library. What I'm worried about is that I noticed that itunes is very poor when it comes to warning you about duplicate files. Is there some easy way to recover these files from the old backup without getting everything duplicated? I should point out that all the music came from my old CD's & isn't copy protected if that makes any difference.
    Windows XP Pro

    Here's what I would do.
Go to your backup copy of your iTunes folder. Copy the missing file you notice per CD and put back in your main iTunes library (on your hard drive).
Then open iTunes and click & drag the file over into iTunes... It will reindex it and then sync on next connection.
Is that clear? To reitterate a different way
1 - Find the backup file missing
2 - Copy the music file back into your real itunes folder
3 - Click & drag this file back over your iTunes window
    4 - let iTunes reindex
    5 - connect ipod

  • PB Ti 1.0 Ghz, Making a complete back-up copy of HD to a 64GB SSD HD 2 boot

Ok, I'm a newbie to the whole world of macs. I just recently got my hands on an awesome running PB titanium 1.0 Ghz. I am finally making the switch from a PC to a Mac. So I have this PB and I have a Transcend 64GB SSD (a solid state Multi Level Cell IDE hard drive) I got the hard drive on ebay for $102 bucks a week ago.
Anyhoo, my question for anybody who can help me out. (I totally appreciate the help in advance) I have the ide to usb connector for it and would like to make an exact carbon copy of the internal hard drive to this drive via USB. I tried once doing this myself using the Super Duper program. I copied the whole drive to the new one (took almost 7 hours to complete) but upon installing the new hard drive and booting up I got the folder with the question mark on it. Can somebody explain to me in detail what I need to do to not only make a carbon copy of the existing hard drive but also make it possible for the new drive to boot on it's own once installed ? Am I using the right program to do this ? If somebody has done this before please let me know what type of settings I need to enter in order for this new drive to boot on it's own. Your help once again will be most greatly appreciated !!
I'm really just experimenting with this PB for now as far as the new drive goes. I figured that I would try to use this SSD drive if possible in it, basically thinking that since it is solid state (No moving parts inside of drive) that it would not only speed this thing up a bit but also make the battery last a bit longer. I don't know exactly what type of speed increase I might see or how much longer battery time I would get from it but I figured for the 102 bucks I got the drive for that this would be a great drive to install into this PB. If I can't figure out a way to use it in my PB then I guess I'll have to resort back to what I didn't want to do, basically putting XP Pro on it and using it in my Acer labtop just to see the speed increase or whatever else it may have to offer.
The main thing about using this SSD drive in my PB is really just knowing I don't ever have to worry about the hard drive itself going Kaput on me as far as it having no moving parts inside, that this hard drive will last for years and years to come, and of course with the awesome mac os tiger operating system on it, I figured that using this HD in the PB first would be my best bet of getting the most out of it. Ok, enough of my writings cause I can just keep going and going. anyhoo, anybody that can help me out once again will be more than greatly appreciated. Thanx again for the reply from anybody who can help me, Jason

Hey Eww, I have now secure erased the drive and went back into disk utility to re-format the drive. I reformatted the drive to Mac Os Extended, and opted out of the journal part of it all, as upon reading other posts about this, that I believe it really only applies to servers or back-up from a power outage or hardware failure, which hopefully I don't have to worry about anything of the latter, basically why I'm trying to use this drive in the first place.
Now that I see that I am on my third try, I am definitely going to go and get me one of those firewire to ide converters, probably from micro center tomorrow, as I know I'll probably have more use for it than I thought I would have imagined. I will make sure that it does have the oxford chipset in it or I won't buy it from there and just turn to ebay to get it from the guy you passed me the link on.
I wrote the guy to the link u posted. The ebay item had ended already but he sent me an email to his online store directly, so thank you again for the link, very much appreciated.
I am in the middle of trying this out one more time, hopefully the third time is a charm and if I am not successful this time I am just going to take everything in to a local computer store that works on macs and just pay them to do it. From what I have read about this SSD multi level cell HD, that I should not install an operating system on it from discs, I take it because of the properties of the drive itself. If this is not correct in your opinion please let me know, I am always open to options on how to make this successful.
This seems to be such an easy task to do, but just like life, somehow, someway, it just finds a way to be difficult. I would say it's just my luck but I don't even go that route anymore. So yeah, I am going to give this one more try and if once again I am not successful I will call it quits and just pay somebody else to do it not the route I wanted to go since it seems like such an easy task but if I do have to go that route I hope they don't try to sock it to me, or I'll probably just end up leaving the original drive in it and go back to what I do know how to do, going back to my dang windows pc and formatting it to use in my pc based labtop. wish me luck, as I see already I'm going to need alot of it.
Thanx again for all your help, I will let you know of the outcome this time around. ttyl, Jason

  • Cannot get printer function back from copy function

On several occasions my printer switches to a function other tha "print" and I cannot get the print function back.  It seems like it should be a simple task but I have tried everything including turning it off and on.  The computer data indicates that the proper printer is chosen.  Thanks

    Hello @jbg1946,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that occasionally you are not able to print from your Windows Vista computer to your HP PSC 2510 Photosmart All-in-One Printer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. Now,  you indicate in your post that your machine seems to switch functions. This is quite unusual as your printer should only perform the tasks that was asked of it. When you send the print command, your printer should print. When you select Copy on the front panel of your printer, your machine should Copy. When you want to scan and and select the Scan button, your machine should scan. If you're selecting the print button on the computer, but the printer fails to print, this would indicate a potential hardware on the printer or a software/driver issue on the computer, rather than a switch of functions.
To start troubleshooting I am going to have you download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool. This Tool will run on your computer and 'fix printing' issues for you. Should any driver, software, or connection conflicts be found than the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool will attempt to resolve those conflicts for you.
Please click here to download the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool. Once the website opens select the Download button on the top left. If prompted, please allow the download to Run. Once the download is complete follow the onscreen prompts to 'fix printing'. Once the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool has completed, please test printing again.
Should the issue persist, please let me know if you ever get any error messages either on the computer or on the printer when you try to print and it fails.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Good luck!

  • Is it ok to carbon copy clone internal hd to the only time machine back up copy?

I Only have 1 external hd that is the only time machine backup copy of my internal hd.
wwould I risk losing the backup if I ccc internal to it?

If the external drive is large enough, and has enough free space, just use Disk Utility to create a new partition to clone to, that way you won't interfere with your TM backup.
For instructions see "Create new partitions on a disk" (About half way down the page) in:
Disk Utility 12.x: Partition a disk
You may be able to create new partitions on a disk without losing any of the files on the disk. Each partition works like a separate disk. You may need to create a new partition if you want to install multiple operating systems on your computer. You can also create partitions to help organize your files.
As a precaution, back up your data before creating new partitions on your disk
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select the disk where you want to create a new partition and click Partition.
Select an existing partition in the Volume Scheme list, and click Add (+).Disk Utility splits the partition into two, leaving the data from that partition in one of the new partitions. If the partition is less than half-full, Disk Utility creates two partitions of equal size. Otherwise, it creates one partition large enough for the data, and another partition with the remaining space.
Resize the partitions as needed. You can drag the dividers between the partitions in the Volume Scheme list, or you can select a partition in the Volume Scheme list, and then enter a value in the Size field.
Choose how to format the partitions that will be erased or created. For each new partition, select it, enter a name, and then choose a format.
    Click Apply.
Creating a new partition on the external drive will not cause you to lose data.
Keep in mind that this will significantly reduce the amount of space available for TM, and thus, will reduce how far back in time TM will maintain a backup. If you are planing on making this a permanent thing you might want to invest in a second external drive in the near future.

  • Maxtor One-Touch back up, copying, etc. Driving me crazy!

As much I love my G5, one thing that drives me nuts is this:
If I copy a folder of 100gb from my main drive to my backup drive, where I had copied this same folder last week, but it now has 2 new files in it, I get a message which allows me to either overwrite the entire 100gb (even though only 2 files have changed) or cancelling.
What I REALLY need is some way for the computer to know that I only want the news files copied and to leave the other ones alone. If I open the folder and Select All, and then copy, i will have the opportunity to Replace or Overwrite, but that is way too cumbersome, considering the number and size of some of these files.
I think that my Maxtor One-touch has some way of doing what I want, but then that preseents other problems - like I can't selectively copy just some files, and if I'm copying from more than one drive to this backup drive, it gets complicated.
Is there a way to do what i'm trying to do?
    Thanks.
G-5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Maxtor One Touch external drive

    Thank you all.
    A couple of things:
First, I don't know much about hagis heid, or Scotland, but I have to say Craig Ferguson is perhaps the funniest latenight show host I've ever seen - he's fresh and spontaneous and really seems to enjoy what he's doing.
But to get back on topic, if I decide to use this new drive as a capture drive, I don't see "HFS Extended" as a formatting option. I've got Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Mac OS Extended and UNIX File System. Is that because on 10.3.9 and not on Tiger yet, or am I missing something?
If I don't use this as a capture drive, is it still advisable to format it? I find that it copies faster, if I don't.
One more question - my orginal one - even once properly formatted, how can I do my copying of files, in some intelligent way, where it will only overwrite files that need updating and not waste time with the others?
How do y'all approach that? What is your system of backup?
    Thanks again.

  • HT1766 I earsed the contacts data while SYNC with i tunes. I have a back up copy. Every time i do restore it put the contact data in my phone for 30 sec then it does away. How can i store it permenantly

I deleted all my contact trying to sync with I tunes. I am Resstored the contacts from back up. It apears for 30 second then it goes blank abain. can some one guide me on how to save it, also how can I sync my contact to I tunes without deleting the data on my phone

Similar issue -- this is the third time in as many months that I've had to restore my iPad. It's a iPad Mini w/ 32GB (ME277LL/A), running the latest iOS8.1.2. The "other" data starts off about 1GB and will bob around that. I was careful about games this time, seeing only a slight rise in the data. Once it started to rise, I deleted all of the game and the data on Game Center. No joy -- the data stays about the same.
Then I noticed it was really climbing -- shooting up to about 10GB and sitting there, no matter what I did: sync it: nothing. Deleting music (on the off chance it was album art or some such: nothing. Deleted all the books in iBooks: no effect -- still 10GB. Cleared the iCloud storage, cleared caches repeatedly: nothing. Reset everything: no effect. Only Restoring the iPad -- which takes forever and is a gigantic pain in the @$$ -- gets it down. This is exactly the same thing that happened the other two times -- I lose about 10GB to "other."
I now suspect, thinking on what I was doing with the device, that pulling movies from iTunes seems to be the culprit. Deleting the movies might take the movie "off the iPad", but there seems to be a corresponding jump in Other. My guess is there's some glitch dumping the information elsewhere.
It makes a 32GB iPad pretty frickin' close to useless in a remarkable amount of time. I've not had this issue until this iPad (bought last summer) with the iOS8 upgrade. I don't see this happen on the iPhone 5S with the same OS...that's why I dialed down to iTunes (when is it not smack in the middle of issues?) and Video as the culprit; I don't watch movies on the phone.
I've noticed a massive amount of posts in support and around the web on this matter...it might be time for Apple to shift it and do something about the matter. If I'm going to be restricted to surfing the web, email, and little else thanks to the Other issue, it really doesn't make sense to stick with this device. I can doo all that on my laptop, can't it?
