Back up Data on Hard drive

I have been experiencing problems with my T61 and recently the computer shut down and can't boot all the way. Lenovo is sending me a New T61 in a couple of weeks, so I was wondering if there is a way to back up, transfer, or restore the data on the old hard drive. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Go into Rescue and Recovery by pressing the Thinkvantage button during start up, within the Rescue Recovery system you have the option to backup your current system and then save it into an external usb harddrive i think.

  • Problems reading my backed up data on hard drive after using Time Machine

I have a MacBookPro and had to take it in for servicing. I backed up all my data using Time machine. They had to replace my battery, hard drive, and logic board, basically wiping my slate clean. When I got my computer back and plugged in my hard drive time machine came up asking if I wanted to restore a back up. I chose the drive. Then that drive disappeared from the desktop and changed the disk name from "BACKUP" to "disk1s4" and is unreadable. Cannot get anything off the hard drive.
Any idea how I can read my data off my hard drive. I have 3+ years of pictures of my 2 kids and all my music. The rest I could take or leave. But I would be devastated to lose my pictures.
    Please help
    Thank you

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    Do you mean this window?
    or this one?
    They are very different, obviously.
Try repairing the drive, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Why was your Mac seviced? What did they replace?

  • Is it possible to back up data if hard drive is crashing or has crashed

My son's computer froze and I have tried to reboot while holding down the option key and by holding down Command + Option + R for an internet reboot.
When I try to repair utilities from the internet, I cannot choose the hard drive; instead, my options are SuperDrive, disk) and MacOS X Base System.
When I click on any of those options and select First Aid, I cannot click on Repair Disk Permissions. It's as if the hard drive has vanished!
If I try to re-install Mac OS X, will I lose all data?
I have an appointment with the Genius Bar tomorrow, but I have no way that I know of to back up the data.
Ideas?  My son does not use iCloud and has never back up anything

First, don't attempt to reinstall OS X. Even if it does allow you to do so, it will overwrite existing drive space and may put your files further out of reach.
There are disk utilities you can use to try to recover the drive (e.g. Diskwarrior), or get the files back (e.g. Data Rescue) - they generally require having another Mac connected to your son's, and space to recover files to. They're not recommended if you're unfamiliar with their use, as it's very possible to make things worse.
I would be inclined to leave the computer alone until you meet with Apple, tell them exactly what the situation is, and they may be able to connect to the files. If they cannot, you should take the computer (before Apple does any work on it) to a reliable local Mac specialist who could try to recover the data for you. If it is absolutely vital that you get the files back, you may end up having to send the drive to a data recovery specialist such as DriveSavers (which can be quite expensive).

  • How to back up data on hard drive

what is the best way to back up data to an external HD? I have no back up software. I have data in a "previous system" folder. I can not find original applications such as Office for Mac. When I try to install from disc I get error message "shared libray error"

To backup, you can use CarbonCopy Cloner @ http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html , or SuperDuper @ http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html , or IBackup @ http://www.grapefruit.ch/iBackup/index.html , or the Restore function of Disk Utility included in OS X.

  • I lost my iTunes library on my pc when the hard drive crashed. None of the data on the drive was recoverable and I did not have a backup. How can I get the music that resides on my ipod nano (4th generation back onto the new hard drive on my pc.

I lost my iTunes library on my pc when the hard drive crashed. None of the data on the drive was recoverable and I did not have a backup either locally or on the cloud. Much of the music is from old vinyl and podcasts which are no longer available.
How can I get the music that resides on my ipod nano (4th generation) back onto the new hard drive on my pc.
I have been reluctant to install iTunes on the new hard drive out of fear that I will lose all the contents on the ipod if I try to synch to the new hard drive.
    Help!

No backup is a huge mistake.
You can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:

  • Will Time Capsule back-up an external hard drive that is connected to it directly via USB?

I'm considering a macbook air, but I have ~200GB of music and photos that currently lives on another laptop (and is manually backed up to a 500GB ext. hard drive).  Ideal set-up would be as follows:
    1. MBA (128GB) with just the OS, applications and ~ 5GB of .doc, .xls, .pdf, etc.
    2. The 500GB hard drive (loaded w/ music and jpegs' and permanently connected to Time Capsule so that I don't have to plug it into the MBA everytime I want to use music/jpegs)
    3. Time capsule (constantly backing up the MBA and hard drive via time machine).
Does anybody know if this is possible (i.e. will the TC back up an external hard drive that is permanently attached to it, rather than attached to a Mac?)
Does anybody have other suggestions (without having to buy any more gear) for storage/back-up that don't require that I plug that external HD to a computer every time I want to access the data?

No, sorry, Time Machine cannot back up from a network location.

The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync (and probably others) can back up from a network location.

  • Using Time Machine to back up an external hard drive

    Hi,
This has probably been asked a lot but i'm struggling to find an answer. I want to back up my external hard drive using Time Machine but i'm not sure how to do it?
Is there a way that I can connect my external hdd and create a back up that is stored on my mac?
If this was possible, does Time Machine take a snapshot or does it duplicate the data (in other words would this take up a huge amount of storage on my laptop)?
I don't use Time Machine as I generally don't store anything on my laptop, but my external HDD holds all my photos.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Accessing back-ups on external hard-drive with Time Machine.

    Hi guys,
I hope someone can help me with this problem. I am a novice at this so please be patient and forgive my ignorance.
I backed up the internal hard-drive of my '06 iMac onto an external Iomega 500GB hard-drive using Time Machine.
A couple of weeks later the internal hard-drive of my iMac fried and I got the " grey screen of death ".
Now I have the external hard-drive connected to my '06 MacBook.
There is 300GB of data on the external hard-drive. There is only 50GB of space available on my MacBook.
I would like to access my iPhoto on the external hard-drive but when I click on the iPhoto icon in Time Machine, I get "error code 10657 ".
I am NOT trying to do a full restore of the back-up onto the MacBook because :
    1. There is not enough space available on the MacBook and
    2. I will do a full restore when I have bought and installed a new bigger hard-drive into the iMac.
So, I guess my question is this : Is it possible for me to access my iPhoto on the external hard-drive using my MacBook without doing a complete transfer and if so, how ?
    Thanking you in advance,
    Sean.

If this is a network device, you can't back it up with Time Machine. If it's directly attached, and in Mac OS format, delete it from the exclusion list in the Time Machine preference pane.

  • Set up to save directly to external Hard Drive so cannot have separate 'back up'I now want to reverse i.e save to internal Hard Drive and 'back up' on external 'hard Drive'. Please advise me how to do this.

For backing up your data I recommend that you use Time machine:

When you import images or create other data files, file them in the appropriate places on your internal drive, don't delete them and let Time machine back them up.

  • Can I use time machine to back up via a hard drive connected by USB to a HomeHub router?

Can I use time machine to back up via a hard drive connected by USB to a BT HomeHub router? Is there a better way to back up and store files than via the USB port on my new MacBook Pro? I'd like storage to be accessible from my earlier version MacBook too.

I think you want to make backups without connecting a hard disk via USB. In other words, you want to have the data storage be shared in your home wirelessly.
If this is the case, I recommend using a Time Capsule.
Time Capsule works great with Time Machine. You can set up all your devices to automatically make backups on the Time Capsule wirelessly and effortlessly.

  • Can't back up to ext hard drive

Every time I try to back up to external hard drive to always say's "The backup disk is not in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which is required."please can someone tell me how to fix this problem...

    Format the External Hard Drive.
Go to Utilities > Disk Utility
Select the Erase tab, then select the format and erase the drive.
*If you have anything on the drive, make sure it is backed up to another drive. It will erase all data on the drive and reformat it.

  • HT201318 Do I need enough storage to completely back up my entire hard drive?

I need to have a complete back up of my hard drive, but I also need to stream my videos and photos so they take up all my hard drive space and slow my machine.  I want this to happen directly between my iphone and macbook.

Get another drive for your streaming and storage needs. Use another drive for your backup needs. Backup and storage should not be combined on the same drive if you value your data.

  • Can I back up my external hard drives to time machine?

    Hi,
I've backed up my laptop and two external hard drives to my time machine - but because the data on the hard drives were backed up through my computer over a month ago I can't now seem to access the back ups of the hard drives.
Is there a way of accessing the back up of the hard drives from the specific day I did this, or is there a more efficient way of backing them up so I can permanently access the back up files for these drives?
On other answers to similar questions:
'Any drives not specifically on the Exclude list will be backed up' - my external drives are not permanently plugged into my computer so the back up seems to be overridden on the next back up.
'Just be sure your backup drive is large enough - at least twice the capacity of the total capacity of the drives being backed up.' - time capsule is 2TB, I have external drives with 1.5TB of info at the moment, will this be sufficient?
    Thanks,
    P

I plugged the hard drives into my laptop and the time machine backed them up as if they were part of my computer on the routine hourly back up.
But because I only had the back up drive plugged in for the duration of the actual back up, the external drives only show up in the time machine on that particular day, and subsequent hourly / daily backups on time machine didn't show the external hard drives again.
I only seem to be able to access a month's worth of backing up so because the back up of the external drives was done over a month ago I can't seem to retrieve the back up of the external drive I did on that particular day.
Does that make sense? Is there a better way of doing this?
