Back up disc

First, you'll be glad to know that all the problems we have in Windows, the Mac users are having too. I was able to make a back up data DVD of my library. from the libray menue I did CTRL + A to select all, then draged my 882 songs to the open screen of my blank DVD and all the songs transfered.

Without knowing exactly how you created the back up data this may or may not work. The simple answer is
- connect the backup disk to your computer via USB or what ever work
- find Migratioan Assistant (/Applications/Utilities) and start that
- tell Migration Assistant to copy only user files and Applications from the backup disk
- walk away after that starts & come back in an hour or two - you should have you data and folder structure just as it was before
Mac OS X isn't like Windows where you get no tools and have to move data manually.

HT1338 I cannot open encrypted files/folders on my back up disc.

Hi, I created an encrypted disc, with disc utility. It is a .sparseimage type file, 128 encryption, password protected. I can open it on my Mac no problem, I took the password off the keychain (as advised) and if I try to open the disc (which I placed in "Documents") once I enter the password, everything opens fine.
The problem is when I try to open the files on my back up disc (I use an external hard drive to back up everything, via time machine) I get this message after entering the password" The following disc images could not be opened" and in a smaller box underneath, the relevant disc is named and it says this next to it"no mountable file systems".
So if my Mac was to crash and I needed the ext. hd as a back up for recovery, currently, the encrypted files cannot be opened.
Can anyone please help?

How do you copy it to the backup disk? That error generally means that the file didn't fully copy over.
Open a Terminal window. Type 'md5', space, and then drag the sparseimage file that works into the Terminal window, and then press return.
Do the same think for the sparseimage that doesn't work.
If they are the same file, they should have the same MD5 value. If the codes don't match, the files are not identical.
Do a Get Info on each file and see if they are the same length.
The only thing I can think of is that file is not completely copied or the external disk is formatted as a FAT32 (Windows) disk, in which case, files can't be more than 4G and if your image is larger than that, it will get cut off.

Possible corrupt music file on back up disc - can't restore iTunes library!

Sold old laptop last week in prep for getting new PC, backed up iTunes library onto DVD disc (whole library went on 4.7GB disc with no problems) - got new PC yesterday, downloaded iTunes 9, inserted back up disc, tried to restore but keeps getting stuck on one song and going no further. Can anyone help with any other suggestions because I'm going nuts! Can't update my iPhone as there's nothing in iTunes to update it with!

Yes, the relative location is the same, the user account has the same short and long lame as before.
I did try to use the preferences to point to the backed up itunes folder. Once when it was on the eHD and once when I put it in the music folder. Unfortunatley no luck.
I will try your idea about using "Consolidate Library"
One other interesting thing I tried a few days ago was to follow the procedure outlined in the apple support section about restoring the library. It has you move the libray xml file to the desk top, trashing one of the other files (I forgot which) and then choosing the xml file placed on the desk top upon starting itunes. I thought it was kind of odd to select the very xml file I was having trouble with so I chose the backed up xml file. It put all of the playlist folders back in duplicate, but the library was still empty (probably becuase the xml file is just a reference file and I hadn't loaded any actual music files) If the consolidate doesn't work, mabye I'll try that again, but also put the folder with the actual files on the computer as well

Can I get back up discs for adobe software that is pre-installed on a computer?

I am thinking of buying a used Mac, with Master Collection pre-installed on it. Trouble is, it doesn't come with the discs. Can I get a back-up disc of the Adobe software if I have the license? I have bought used Adobe software before and had the license transfered/activated in my name, so I was wondering about if I bought a computer with it pre-installed, what would Adobe do? Would they help me out, or give me the boot?
Also, how many times will Adobe let you reinstall their software on your computer (In cases of HD failure, etc)?

Back-up disc for downloaded Logic Pro 9?

I'm asking this question a different way as the answer I got was not complete....I downloaded Logic Pro 9; I want to make a back-up disc; how do I make sure I include all the program files (including all the extras)? How do I locate all the right files?

Then it is a drag & drop installation app, so saving the app should be sufficient. The app should create the other files the first time it is run after being newly installed on a system.

You should learn RMAN (Recovery Manager) to do your backup with Oracle suggested way
Then you can restore and recover this backup in any instance

My time capsule still functions as a wireless base station but I am now unable to find my back-up disc. find

My current time capsule 1T still works as a wireless base station to connect my remote computer to the internet yet I can't bring up my Time Capsule hard disc. I keep getting this message when I try to back up and I am unable to retrieve my backup disc storage. Is it possible for this unit to fail from the back-up disc standpoint yet the WL function continues to operate. This is the 2nd failure that I have had w/ a Time Capsule.

The TC hard disk can fail.. they become generally unreliable at 3years but many fail well before that. If you have applecare on any computer and TC less than 3years old, check if apple might not replace it .. again.
I am not clear what the message is when the connection fails.
Need more info.. exact error..
Does the smart test show errors in the TC for the hard disk?
What model and size hard disk is it exactly? The A model number from the base will help.
Have you reset the TC or even just rebooted it and the network.
Some apple updates are rather less than satisfactory and I have found my TM target disk offline for the first time yesterday.. for no good reason.. a simple reboot got it restarted and the Mac able to detect it again.

Satellite C660 - recovery partition is there but can I make back up discs?

Just a query
My GF turned on her laptop Satellite C660 series and it would not boot up, we tried to initiate the recovery sequence from the recovery partition but kept getting the error that was on boot up (the error was telling us a USB device had been unplugged).
As you probably guessed she never made the back-up discs when prompted, all I could think of was using a win 7 disc and reload that way then try and make the recovery discs after (I didn't activate)
so win 7 was installed nicely and all drivers sourced that was all last week.
Now for the crunch , the recovery partition is there can I now make the recovery discs and install from those , the win 7 I installed will soon require activation
Any ideas?

Recovery discs can be created with preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator and this tool is available when notebook is preinstalled with original OS from Toshiba. Additional download and usage is not possible.
As Terentino already wrote best thing you can do now is to order original recovery disc from Toshiba. It costs a bit but at least it is the best solution for you.
Next time if there is some problem, dont act before you post here. ;) I hope we can help you with some good and useful advice.

Cannot reinstall library from back up discs

Recently lost iTunes & all music files. Reinstalled iTunes successfully but the back up discs I made will not open. Any ideas?

It seems the ability to restore from backup discs was removed along with the ability to create them. You will need to temporarily install an older version of iTunes (e.g. 10.3) to recover the media from those discs.
See Win 7 OS,64 Bit..Going back to ver 10.3 as I wish to use the cdbackup/restore version..I for a previous thread discussing this.

I have a Gateway 7818 and just recently did a full system recovery......I'm trying to load the back-up discs and am having a heck of a time.....does anyone have any ideas??????????

If you did a full system recovery you shoulnt need to use those discs then. A factory image contains everything.

Back up disc cannot be found

I was changing a few setting on the time capsule. In the process it started saying that the back up disc could not be found. I haven't backed up my laptop since that happened so that it would not overwrite the backup I need. Any suggestions?

Try just reselecting your Time Capsule in TM Preferences.
If that doesn't help, try a "full reset" per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If still no help, reset the Time Capsule, per http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728

Can you restore specific items from an itunes back-up disc?

When I back up purchases made only since my previous back-up, how does restoring work if I want to bring back things from my previous back-up as well as my current one? Can I restore certain items only, rather than the whole disc? For example, I'm backing up two seasons of Doctor Who and want to delete from itunes on my computer to save space. It I've done a back-up disc, can I reload only the Doctor Who files and not all the music files, etc? Or do I need to save individual items, such as Dr Who seasons, as data on a separate DVD?

As far as I'm aware iTunes does an all or nothing restore, but then I've never relied upon it so I might be mistaken.
Fast backup for iTunes library (Windows)
Grab SyncToy 2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time.
If your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes, regardless of the drive letter or path it appears on.
With this method you get a file for file clone so if you accidentally delete/corrupt a single file you can just go and copy that back from the backup.
It's never a good idea to rely on only having one copy of a file, and even worse if that copy is buried inside an archive format. A single error can render the entire archive inaccessible.

Back Up Disc in iPhoto 11

Hi,
Using iPhoto 11, I am unable to burn a CD/DVD for for use in iPhoto. I am following the Share->Burn command as instructed--I now have three JPEG discs of photos of my trip to Vietnam, but I would like to have a back-up disc with all of the data. I have all of the latest software updates. I had no trouble doing this with iPhoto 09. Is it me or the software? Any thoughts or comments would be very much appreciated.

There is a blue folder marked iPhoto library. Opens to 4 folders: Database, Masters. Previews and Thumbnails. All of the folders contain jpegs--no originals. (BTW-the Share/Burn command warns that the resulting product will be usable in iPhoto only. For a 'universal' disc, one should go to FInder. I think that there is a disconnect--should I not have upgraded to 11? As I said, I had no problem in 09) Thanks for your help Terence.

one of my back up discs won't load into my itunes, it says an error occured, is there away to fix this???

If the discs are RW, you can erase them and back up again.
Easiest way is to get two sets of CD/DVDs.
Back up everything using one set, then after you accumulate more songs, use the next set of discs to back up everything.
When you want to back up again, erase the firs set and use that, then the 2nd set, ad nauseum.
Or get an external drive and simply copy the entire iTunes folder.
