Back up drive giving strange prompts.

Time Machine (as well as many other features) does not play well with software that I have installed for work. Because of this, I perform manual back ups of individual things on a regular basis. For example, I drag the iPhoto Library file to the back up drive every couple of weeks, and this has worked without fail up until today, when upon dragging the file to the drive, I received a strange prompt. Instead of asking if I wanted to replace the older file with the new one, it asked if I wanted to replace the newer files (referring to the older ones on the back up drive) with an older version (which was the most up to date). I don't understand why this would happen, it seems quite counter-intuitive, and because I was expecting the usual prompt, I clicked OK and lost about five weeks of photos. Not the end of the world, but it's continuing to give me this backwards prompt. I checked the disk in disk utility and it seems to be operating just fine, as is the rest of the computer, but I don't understand why the computer thinks that I would want to replace the file that I'm dragging with the one in the destination folder. Seems kind of backwards to me. I'm running Snow Leopard on a fairly new iMac. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

If you are running Snow Leopard then it isn't a fairly new iMac. Snow Leopard was replaced as the shipping operating system back in the middle of 2011, almost 2 years ago.
But as to your problem it really sounds like you are dragging from the external backup drive to the internal drive and not from internal to external. There is no way you would get that prompt, Replace newer with older, otherwise.
Disconnect the external, reboot the system and try again. Open 2 Finder windows one highlighting the internal the other focused on the external and Drag + Drop (Which in my opinion is a poor way to copy files) or better Command+c from internal to copy and Command+v to paste to external.

replace the classes12.jar/classes12.zip used by your application with the one from the database [ present in ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib ]. Also check if you have set ORACLE_HOME env variable and
( only for Solaris and Linux )
put ORACLE_HOME/lib in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH
is it a web app or a stand - alone one ?

How can I back up my back up drive with time machine?

Im a rather paranoid person having lost my data TWICE in 2 months and spending £1000 to get it back, so I have 2 external hard drives. One is a back up drive for my internal mac hard drive, and is also used as a second working drive. I want to back up this external drive so that my final (2nd) external hard drive has all the data from my first external hard drive. Therefore I will have 2 backups of my internal mac hard drive, and one backup of my 1st external hard drive.
How can I get time machine to do this? I have the 1st drive set as the time machine back up drive, which it copies my MAC hard drive onto, but I can't seem to find a way of also getting it to then back up my 1st external drive to the second external drive?

Moving iPhoto Library to Back Up drive

Hello,
Because my hard drive is filling I want to move the iPhoto library to my LaCie back up drive and leave the iPhoto application on the current eMac. I've done that with my movie files and documents with no problems.
Can anyone tell me how do I do it?

Copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library folder to a Mac formatted external drive.
Launch iPhoto while holding down the Option key.
At the prompt, choose to open another library.
Navigate to the library on the external and highlight it.
Hit the "open" button
iPhoto will open the library on the external and from now on will use this library to import images too. This will now be your working library. Make sure everything is working correctly and everything is fine in the library.
You can then delete the library on the internal if you wish.

How do I get iTunes songs which were downloaded from external back-up drive to play on new computer and is there a way to get my play lists back?

When I try to play a song from my re-installed iTunes library, I get the error message: "Song xxx could not be played because original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" > "Locate" or "Cancel." When I click on "Locate" I can't figure out how to get the song to play from any of the places that were "located." The path is C:\users\Janet\libraries\music\iTunes
However, iTunes songs chosen from my library will play in iTunes (current version) when I have the external back-up drive plugged in! I recently copied my backed-up iTunes library from my external back-up drive to a new computer.
Most of the songs, but not all, magically appear in Windows Media Player and I can play those just fine.
I can see my iTunes library in the newest version of iTunes, recently downloaded to new computer, but can't play songs without connecting to the external back-up drive - so maybe there is something else on that external drive that needs to be on my C: drive?
I am using an HP Pavillion Notebook, Windows 7, 64-bit. My previous computer was Windows Vista. Before Vista, I had XP.
Back when I had XP, I wanted to purchase some songs to download to my computer. Because iTunes had the ability, I used it to create a massive library of songs, most of which were ripped from my CDs. I don't have an iPod and iTunes worked fine for creating playlists and then burning them to CDs.
Also, I'd like to know if there is a way to get back my playlists.
And another thing - in the older version of iTunes, there was a folder in the lists on the left-hand side of the screen where I could click to see all the songs I had purchased. I'd like to get that ability back if possible.
In hindsight, iTunes was probably not the best choice for me to build my music library in a Windows operating system, but it seemed to be the best choice at the time. I really wish I could convert all the songs to mp3 format.
I have been working with computers since the days of DOS, black and white screens, and no mice. The first computer I bought for my own use at home was a Mac and it had "Flying Toasters" as a screensaver. (I miss that screensaver.) It did not have a tower and I believe they called it a laptop, even though the thing was as big as a suitcase and probably weighed around 30 pounds. However, I am by no means a computer expert. In other words, pretend you're trying to tell your mother how to do what I am asking. =)

I copied the iTunes file from the external drive and it's in both places. I thought all I would need is the iTunes program (which I downloaded to new computer) and my iTunes library file. There must be something else that's missing. My iTunes library looks the same on the new computer as it does when I open it on the external drive. If I click on an iTunes library song from my new computer, it will only play if I have the external drive plugged in.
My back-up drive is a mess. I have multiple copies of music, video, photo, and document files and I don't know how that happened. ={ Obviously, I don't know how to back up stuff properly and there are back-up files extending over a 6- to 8-year period. I think all I did was just drag and drop the main folders from the back-up drive to the same main folders on the C: drive. Also (and I'm kind of fuzzy on this) Windows used to automatically save music files in a folder within my document files (which makes no sense to me). As my Jewish friends would say, "Oy Vey!"

Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? How do I recover a "Note" from a back-up drive?

I'm on a macbook Pro and I've been having trouble with "Notes" ever since I upgraded to Yosemite. At first notes wasn't syncing properly from MacBook to iPhone, then it looked like sync was happening properly. But now I've noticed that one, important, long-running "Note" has disappeared from both devices. I don't use "Time Machine," but I do do weekly back-ups to a hard drive using SuperDuper. Those back-ups are set to not delete information, so I'm hoping this missing "Note" and/or its data is somewhere on my back-up drive? I've been trying to look through my library, etc., but I can't seem to find it. I opened the Notes app from the back-up and the Note was still missing. Can anyone tell me where this data might be and if/how I might recover it. Thanks so much.

This procedure will revert the whole Notes database to a previous version. It's not possible to restore individual notes.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

my boot drive is my internal hardrive which is a 250 GB drive. The drive i am using for TM is 500GB, but you are saying that is really too small. TM, as i understand it, creates a copy of everything, and then subsequent backups record any changes that were made since the last backup. and what do you mean "bootable clones" and do you mean for my internal hard drive AND each of the 3 external hard drives that i have? i'm using one of the three for backup using TM, and i am storing movie files on the other 2. i work at a church, and we use many short films that we purchase online. i then import that file into iMovie to give my volunteers a consistent second and a half of black before the clip and 4 seconds of black at the end of the clip. This provides smoother transitions, i've found, than trying to use most of the clips in their original form. i then have been filing these away in folders on the other 2 hard drives. Regarding the TM drive. Drive Genius is telling me that "the used space on the volume 02 [that's the name of the drive] is 25% fragmented (59.14% of total space).
btw, Time Machine keeps:hourly backups for the past 24 hoursdaily backups for the past monthweekly backups for all previous monthsand the oldest backups are deleted when your disk becomes full.

1st) A fragmented drive is not evil. It will not hurt anything. At worse it might slow down reading a file. However, as has been pointed out by others in this thread, who cares as this is a backup device, not a device you are going to be reading a lot.
2nd) The time you spend defragmenting the drive will far exceed the time you will save when writing new data to the drive.
3rd) Defragmentation will just increase your energy consumption, as all the reading/writing needed to move the files around in order to defragment it, will cause the drive to consume more energy than if it was just sitting idle waiting for the next hourly Time Machine backup.
4th) Defragmentation (if done frequently) may shorten the life of your drive. Not mentioned in "3rd" above is that the extra energy used translates into heat, plus you are moving the read/write heads back and forth all of which affect the drives mechanical and electrical components.
NOTE: There are situations where having a defragmented drive is useful, but mostly it has to do with needing to stream media at a high rate of speed, and fragmented files can affect that. However, a backup drive being used for incremental Time Machine backups is not in that category, and most home Mac usage does not need a defragmented file system either.

Apple support tech tried to tell me it wasn't possible and that the only NAS Time Machine could back up to is the Time Capsule, but I'm not buying it. I know it's doable, but I'm having a hard time figuring out which External HDDs will work and which ones won't. If not My Book for Mac, is there an External HDD that will work? (Running OS X 10.9.1 - Mavericks, btw...)

Given the nature of backups, my recommendation has always been to use a strategy that is unequivocally supported by Apple. As you already determined Apple Support unequivocally informed you that your proposal will not work, unless your router is an Apple AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.
The exhaustive list of devices supported by Time Machine amounts to the following:
AirPort Time Capsule's built-in hard disk (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to a Time Capsule (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to an AirPort Extreme (current model only)
A hard disk drive directly connected to your Mac
That is all.
Use whatever backup device you want, but you should be aware that this site is full of reports of misery from hapless individuals who had been using NAS devices for Time Machine backups, only to find that they were incomplete, corrupted, or useless when they were required. Apple won't care if you lose your data while using a Time Machine configuration specifically excluded from their technical support documents.

How do I retrieve my iphoto library from the Time Machine back-up drive, when the original iphoto library was on a separate external hard drive that has crashed?

I recently backed up my iMAC and Simpletech external hard-drive to a 1 TB WD Passport external hard drive, using Time Machine's back-up utility. Today, I tried to access my iphoto library from the back-up drive, but received a message saying "the iPhoto library is a Time Machine back up, and so cannot be used as the main library. Relaunch iPHoto with options key held down to choose another library." Since my Simpletech died on me, what other iPhoto library is it expecting me to access? I know approximately 169 GB were backed up, and my iPhoto library is roughly 54 GB.

Thanks. I will try going through TM. Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive. Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means. It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility. Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it. Will look into
Carbon Copy Cloner.

Running more than one time machine back up drive

I have a back up drive assigned as my offices time machine back up drive.
I need to set up an off site back up drive too. I know that time machine will only allow a connection to one back up destination at once.
What problems could i encounter if i set up a off site drive as another time machine drive, disconnect on site drive and connect the off site drive to back up.

That will work just fine, other than the hassle of having to tell Time Machine every time you swap.
Give the drives at least slightly different names (that's for you; Time Machine knows they're different).
Each set of backups will be complete and independent. When you do a backup to either one, it will contain all the changes you've made since the last backup +*to that drive.+*
The first backup after a swap may take a bit longer than usual, as there may be more changes to "catch up" with, but otherwise there should be no troubles.

It's not Logic that can't find them, it's your Komplete apps, though if you did exaclty as you say I can see no reason why they can't.
Do you know where the apps installed them in the first place? I chose a non-standard locarion for mine, but I'm sure it installs sounds to your documents folder/native instruments/name of app.
Go into the prefs of each app and choose the library location button on the library tab and point it to the relevant folder in documents/native instruments and see if that works

Can I use Airport Express to connect to a printer, Time Machine Back up drive, second b/u drive, and scanner through a USB hub? if so, how?

I have an Airport Express that connects to my printer. I'd like to add a scanner, and two back up drives (one for use with Time Capsule, another specifically for photographs backed up from Adobe Lightroom.
The printer connects to the Airport Express through a USB hub and is recognized. I cannot get the scanner nor either of the back up drives to be recognized. Is there a way to do it or will I need to rely on a USB hub wired to the USB port of the MacBookPro? If it is possible, can you walk me through the set up for each?

I'd like to add a scanner, and two back up drives (one for use with Time Capsule, another specifically for photographs backed up from Adobe Lightroom.
Unfortunately, the USB port on the AirPort Express will only work with a compatible printer.
It will not work with a scanner, copier, or hard drive.
It should be possible to do what you want by connecting a powered USB hub to your Mac and then connecting the devices to the powered hub.
The setup for the scanner and hard drive would be covered by the manfacturers documentation, so providing specific advice for those types of products would be outside the realm of this support area.
But, if you can provide model numbers, it is always possible that another user who is using those products might see this post.
