  • File error for improperly inserted or defective desk when using Word with text boxes PLEASE HELP!

    When I have a Word document opened that contains around 10 text boxes, I get..."A file error has occurred. Check your network connections or make sure the disk is properly inserted and not defective" causing the program to either quit automatically or freeze and require me to manually shut my computer down. This will occur about every 15 minutes and only when I am on a document with numerous text boxes. Also, I do copy and paste the text boxes from file to file and change the text accordingly.
    Operating System - Mac OSX 10.8.5
    Microsoft Word 2011 - Version 14.4.5
    File sizes - around 190 KB
    I have turned off track changes and smart cut and paste options, checked for duplicate fonts (none), verified both the Macintosh HD and Apple HDD Media disks (both said the disks were fine so I did not repair either). My husband mentioned something about allocating the working memory space of Word but not sure how that is done (and he is on Team PC ). PLEASE HELP!!!

  • Unable to use Hp Recovery Disk (Shipped Direct from HP) Copy File Error for Windows 8

    I have a Windows 8 HP Envy Dv6-7210US Laptop, I had to order recovery disk from HP to reinstall on the same size hard drive (Hard drive was wiped clean) but in doing so the disc work till got to Disc 2 and then it popped up an Error message (See link to view message). I had this same issue with Windows 7 back last year in 2013 and HP sent me a link to use a Cyberlink Utility to help in aid reinstalling the recovery disk. Unfortunately this doesn't work on Windows 8 as I have tried many times.  I contacted HP and all they want to do is send me out more recovery disc but I already paid for the ones that I had purchased (18.00$) and I think it is a waste of time. If HP knows this error exist then why not issue a fix with it when they ship out recovery disc or whom ever makes these disc? Does any one have any suggestions?

    Hi:
    I have a possible workaround for you to install a plain version of W8 x64 OEM.
    Download this W8 OEM ISO file from the link below.  It should work with the embedded W8 product key in your PC's BIOS.
    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0W9PBigPy94aVJWSndyTFNFMzg/edit?pli=1
    Then use this tool to transfer the file to a 4 GB USB flash drive or DVD.  The tool will also make the file bootable.

    After you get W8 installed, you can install the drivers and available software you need from your dv6-7210us support and driver page.

  • Found Fix for "unexpected-end-of-file" error for Photoshop

    NOTE:
    You will lose all layers (this process flattens the image, but it's better than nothing).
    You need to have Adobe Illustrator installed (you could get a trial version or something if you don't have it).
    I was using Windows 7 when I did this, so it may not work in OSX (Apple) or Windows 8.
             1. Right click on the corrupt document and open it in Illustrator. (Mine took a while so you may have to wait)
             2. Save the file as a .pdf
             3. Right click on the .pdf and open it in Photoshop.
    Sorry, I know i started a discussion but I can't figure out how to answer a post.

    Hi Oliverchuckle
    I tried this on my first encounter of the error and it works pretty good for simple PSD files but not on complex ones containing vector masks etc. And it will not work on larger PSD files that are more damaged and "unreadable".
    There are many things that can cause this - all related primarily to the state of the network or hard drive the file is being saved to.
    To avoid:
    work off your local machine hard drive (not a network drive)
    ensure that you have ample (scratch) disk space (at least 20% free)
    create multiple versions of your files with save as. You can always trash the ones you don't want when you're done.
    Recovery depends on how far the save function got before photoshop (or your computer) crashed. In many cases only the file header information is damaged. For larger files the damage can be more extensive.
    In all cases, the best recovery method is to open the file with Adobe Image Ready and save as. It may give a "file is unreadable" error while opening but usually manages to still open the file. In my testing, the results are 100% accurate (to whatever state the file existed in). In most cases the file was 100% recovered, including complex files containing vector and layer masks, clippings and groups. I cannot say this is the case for any of the paid for "repair PSD" utilities which extract a raster only version of each layer and then re-build the layers into a new psd file. This results in a limited, "destructive" or rasterized layered file.
    Unfortunately, Adobe Image Ready is hard to find. The last version I believe was V9 (“CS2″), May 2005.
    Adobe is offering a legacy download here:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs2-product-downloads.html#
    for users who previously purchased it (and need to re-install it). I didn't try this as I still have CS2 already installed on an older machine. Note, you will need MacOS 10.6.8 running rosetta or older to instal on a Mac.
    Hope this helps!

  • Could not load file/URL (file not found) error for JNLP file

    I am completely baffled in trying to figure out why I am getting the following error for some JNLP files but not others:
    Error: could not load file/URL specified: C:\Users\tom\AppData\Local\Temp\javaws2
    java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\Users\tom\AppData\Local\Temp\javaws2 (The system cannot find the file specified)

    at com.sun.javaws.Main.continueInSecureThread(Unknown Source)
    at com.sun.javaws.Main$1.run(Unknown Source)
    at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)I have Googled around this forum and elsewhere, and have seen reports that this error is IE-specific, and seems to have something to do with no-cache headers being sent, or with the client browser's cache being full or turned off (which is not my case). I saw the information in the JavaWS FAQ, which recommended turning off security constraints for the JNLP's URI. I tried that, and it didn't help. One of the very baffling things is that I have created several variations of the JNLP file, with varying combinations of jars and property resources, and some combinations always work while other combinations never work. Here's an example:
    <jnlp spec="1.0+" codebase="$$codebase">
       <information>
          <title>demo app</title>
          <description>illustrates weird bug</description>
       </information>
       <resources>
          <j2se version="1.5+"/>
          <jar href="randomFile.jar"/>
          <property name="xxx" value="xxxx"/>
          <property name="swing.metalTheme" value="steel"/>
       </resources>
    </jnlp>The above file always fails with the error shown at the top of this message. However, if I remove either of the two properties, it works fine. And I have created other variations with lots of properties, some of which work. All of these variations are in the same directory in the war file, served by the exact same servlet (a slightly modified version of the jnlp.sample.servlet.JnlpDownloadServlet provided with JDK 1.6.0_3). Assuming that a no-cache header is the problem, what on earth could be causing some JNLP files to always be served with a no-cache header, while others are never served with a no-cache header?
    On a related note, any recommended debugging techniques for seeing what headers are being transmitted? I tried adding a simple check for a "debug=true" parameter in the servlet that causes it to set the content type to "text/plain" instead of JNLP, and that allows me to see (rather than execute) the JNLP XML that's being returned, but it doesn't show me the HTTP headers that are being sent back. If any caching headers are being set, I think it must be being set by the servlet container itself, as it's nothing being set in the servlet code that I can see. So I don't see any way on the server side Java code to output or log the actual HTTP response (or is there?). Any tips in that regard much appreciated.

    Hi Luca-Sanna,
    Thanks for the response. Re browsers, yes, it fails in IE but it succeeds in Firefox. The info on the JavaWS FAQ and other places all seem to indicate that it's an IE issue concerning handling of the cache-control headers.
    I should check in my webserver forum (Sun WebServer 7) to see about logging options. Sniffing on the client side is not possible, as my app is required to use HTTPS exclusively, and unfortunately that also precludes a telnet GET request.

    After getting the dreaded gray/blue screen, I tried to run disk repair on the internal disk. I got an error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair this disk and restore your backed-up files. The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely." What do I do now? This is an iMac and I'm running 10.6.8.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
    Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
    the drive and everything on it. See below for how to clone a drive.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
             with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
             After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
             a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
             button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
             After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
             size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
             partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
             and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
             (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
             with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
             Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
             username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
             Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
             install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
             Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
    Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    You may be able to backup your data if you have an erased external drive you can use. Before you do the above but after you have opened Disk Utility you can try to clone your drive:
    Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
           it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    Now this will only work if the drive is accessible and can be cloned by Disk Utility. Otherwise, you would need to access your drive from another Mac that you can connect via Firewire - Target Disk Mode.

  • Hi,  Had boot issue and got the following from DU repair function on Macintosh hd: updating boot support.....Error: Disk utility can't repair this disk.....reformat and restore backed up files. How is that done or do I go to Genius?

    In reference to question the computer gave no warning but lost internet connectivity.  I shut down for a while and when returned it would only boot to gray logo screen with spinning gear.  Ran disk utility and on Mac HD drive it stopped after "Updating boot support partitions as required". Then in red: Error: Disk utility can' repair this disk ....disk, and restore backed up files.   I'm running OS X 10.8 and had just updated the iOS about three days ago.  Not familiar with reformat process on MacBook Pro and would like some ideas whether I should go to the Genius Bar here in Sydney or try it on my own.   I have been using time machine to back up to a 1TB La Cie drive right up to the crash.   Thanks for any advice.

    Well it turned out the drive was shot.  Took it to the genius bar yesterday and they ran a test on the drive before trying the restore routine again.  Drive failed.
    Replaced the drive and got the MBP back today.  Pretty quick and decent service once you get an appointment.
    Now having trouble figuring how to do the Time Machine  saved files.  Have several applications which I'd like to keep but not sure how to trans the apps from my backup to the new.  Hunting for answers on that on the web.
    Thanks for you help, Eustace.

    INstead of backing up to CDs (very laborious) why not invest in an external firewire hard drive?
    Using a neat freeware utility called Carbon Copy Cloner, you can make a BOOTABLE clone of your entire hard drive, to this external drive, in about 30 minutes or less. In an emergency you always have a spare, working hard drive and all your stuff on it.
    It sounds to me as if you need one soon....
    I use a LaCie 250 GB, bought from the Apple Store, which I partitioned into 2 sections, one of which is about 20% bigger than the hard drive in my powerbook. I use that partition to clone my entire powerbook HD - about once a week. There is a great little application that does this for you, called Carbon Copy Cloner.
    The other partition on the external HD is for my iTunes music, which is so gigantic it won't fit on the disk in my powerbook.
    Because I'm paranoid, I also have a *backup of the backup* on another computer.
    If you get an external FW HD as I suggest, I think you should back up everything to that, anyway, as your first priority. You are then free to play around with the HDs inside your computer, to find out what (if anything) is wrong with them. You can rest easy, knowing you have a full clone on your external HD, should anything bad happen.
    If your internal HD is making strange sounds, it may be about to do that final crash. THere is a little piece of freeware that allows you to test a disk. I don't know of any other way to tell that a hard drive may be about to die. But they DO die.
    The little piece of freeware is called Smart Reporter and is downloadable here

    Hello,
    Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
    '''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
    #Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
    #After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
    #Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    #*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    #*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
    #Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    ##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    ##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
    Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • Inconsistent "End of file error" on "open for access "myFile.txt"

    I have a script that accesses a txt file containing info needed for values in the script. Sometimes the script works flawless, but once I get the "End of file error," it won't work right anymore unless I log out and log back in or if I dump the file and rewrite it. Below is a copy of the portion of script having the problem:
    +set _fileRef to open for access "Library:Preferences:MyTextFile.txt" with permission+
    + set ReadMyTextFile to read _fileRef as string+
    + close access _fileRef+
    Is there a way to reset the "End of file" status so that I can access it later with the same script in one login session? I have a feeling that the first time it opens, that it reads to the end of the file and then closes the file. When it opens again the script starts to read where it left off at the end of the file. Does that sound right?
    Any help would be great.

    OK, it looks like if you are going to use the open for access..close access, you need to keep tack of the EOF yourself, so you can just read to the EOF - for example:
    <pre title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor" style="font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; font-size: 10px; padding: 5px; width: 720px; color: #000000; background-color: #E0E0E0; overflow: auto"> set TheOpenFile to open for access (choose file)
    try
    set SomeText to paragraphs of (read TheOpenFile to eof as text)
    close access TheOpenFile
    on error
    close access TheOpenFile
    end try
    choose from list SomeText with prompt "File text:" with empty selection allowed
    </pre>
    If there isn't any particular reason to explicitly open and close the file, you can use something like:
    <pre title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor" style="font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; font-size: 10px; padding: 5px; width: 720px; color: #000000; background-color: #E0E0E0; overflow: auto"> set SomeText to paragraphs of (read (choose file) as text)
    choose from list SomeText with prompt "File text:" with empty selection allowed
    </pre>
    In the above examples I used paragraphs of in order to use the choose from list, since it displays stuff like this a little bit better - see this article for a tutorial on file read/write in AppleScript.
