Back up i-tunes library to flash drive

Have a 2010 MacBook Ai  and want to back up my i-tunes library and pictures in i-photos to a flash drive.
All I can find online is how to back up to Time Machine.  Don't have Time Machine and don't want to buy one.
Anyone can tell me how to back up music and photos to a USB flash drive?
Thanks.

Click on the Music and Pictures items of the Finder's sidebar and drag the folders over. An iPhoto library needs to be stored on a drive, partition, or disk image formatted to Mac OS Extended with or without journaling.

  • Problems backing up I-tunes library to external hard drive.

Help - I'm having problems backing up I-tunes library to external hard drive. The drive appears on the desktop but when I try to drag in my i-tunes music folder I just get the circle with a line through it symbol. I can drag items from my mac to a different 4 gig memory stick with no problems. I put some music onto the hard drive from a windows p.c. and that dragged into my i-tunes fine. Any help would be much appreciated.

i'm guessing the external HD is NTFS formatted, which your Mac cannot write to (read only).
you will either have to reformat it (FAT32 or, better yet, for Mac) or install the _*NTFS 3G*_ driver.

  • How do I back up my iPhone to a flash drive? I know it's possible, I just don't exactly know how to do it.

My computer won't back up my iPhone. I'm guessing it's due to not having enough space. I'd like to instead, back up my iPhone to a flash drive. How do you transfer it to the flash drive? I'm aware that you can choose past back ups to transfer but my iPhone has never been backed up, so is there a way to, as my phone is syncing and attempting to back up, that I could have it automatically transfer all the information straight to the flash drive? Hope i'm not too confusing and you can understand what I'm trying to ask. THANKS.

The iPhone backups are saved on the Users/user_name/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup folder. You can create a symlink that points that folder to your external flash drive, but those backups files are pretty big so iTunes may take longer to create those files in a flash drive.
Symlinks are created using the command ln -s, and it may look something like:
    ln -s /Volumes/your_flash_drive_name_here  /Volumes/your_hdd_name_here/Users/your_user_name_here/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
You can also find applications that make symlinks creaton easier.

How do I restore iTunes library from flash drive backup?

    HI Brigdool,
It depends how you made the backup.
If you copied your entire iTunes folder onto the flash drive, just copy it back to the appropriate place on the computer.
If you copied individual folders or files, add them back to iTunes by inserting the flash drive in your computer, and then dragging the files into your "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder.
The first method recreates your library as it was, with all playcounts, playlists, etc.  The second method builds a new library with the same content.

A PowerPC Mac, if that's what it is, won't be able to see an Intel Mac's formatted data.  Also ExFat formatting is not supported by 10.6.3 or earlier.  I would try viewing the backup on another Intel Mac with at least 10.6.4.  If it isn't there, then the backup never really took place.  I much profer a hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • Linking I-tunes library to external drive

I have managed to successfully relocate my i-tunes library onto an external drive, having followed instructions in the i-tunes for Dummies book. (my laptop internal hard drive was full). However, i-tunes has not linked itself to the external i-tunes library file. I understood that this should happen automatically. How do I link them together?

    Hey there,
One thing you should check is where your iTunes searches for your iTunes folder. Head to iTunes and then Preferences. When the window pops up, head over to the Advanced tab. Near the top of the tab, you will see where iTunes currently locates your Music folder. Click the Change button and then direct it to where the folder is located on your External drive. See if that helps.

  • How to copy iphoto picture library to flash drive?

How can I copy all the pictures in iphoto to a flash drive?

    you ask two different questions
do you want to copy the iPHoto library to a flash drive? If so then format the flash drive Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library to it
    Or
do you want to copy all of your photos from the iPhoto library to a flash drive? If so select them all in iPhoto and export to a desktop folder (see the user tip on exporting for details on the available options), mount the Flash drive and drag that folder to it

  • Problem importing photos to iPhoto Library from flash drive

When I try to import photos from flash drive into iPhoto library, they seem to import just fine. BUT if I close iPhoto and then return later, the photos I supposedly imported from the flash drive are not in the Library, and a screen prompt tells me the "source is not available". Photos import into Library from digital camera just fine. Why are the photos from my flash drive not staying in the Library? Kinda defeats the purpose of a Library if images won't stay in it. Please help!

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • I-tunes Library transfer between drives

My Sony desktop has two hard drives: C and D. My i-tunes was on C and I ran out of space. I moved the library to D and tried to move the i-tunes, also. It would not move. I finally removed it from C and re-installed it on D. I now have 2 libraries...one on my IPOD and one on i-tunes in the D drive.
As you know, I cannot update my IPOD because the two libraries "conflict." Help!
    Sony   Windows XP

"As you know, I cannot update my IPOD because the two libraries "conflict." Help!'
Are the same songs on both the computer and the iPod? If so there is no conflict. When you connect the iPod, if it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press Yes.
If the song list on the iPod is different from the computer press No and when the iPod appears in the iTuners source list go to Edit>Preferences>iPod and change the update setting to "manually manage songs and playlists" then you can use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it.
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Edit>Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually

  • ITunes Library on Flash Drive

I recently purchased a macbook air, and was going to use mainly as a travel computer, but I find myself using it more and more, and hardly ever using my macbook pro. I am contemplating switching completely over. My one big issue is syncing my iPhone and my iTunes content including mobile apps. The macbook air is somewhat limited in storage with 128 GB. I thought in an effort to maintain maximum portability and also storage space, I would move the iTunes library to a flash drive.
If I wanted to do this, I assume I simply have to drag the iTunes Library folder from my home on the macbook pro to the flash drive. Then I would just change the preferences in iTunes on the macbook air so that it knows the iTunes library is located on the flash drive.
Two questions if I have it so far. First, I assume it is not a problem to remove the flash drive so long as I am not accessing iTunes content. Please let me know if this is correct. I store my daughter's iTunes library on an external hard drive, but her computer is a desktop so portability is not an issue.
The second issue, is whether there are any other libraries or folders that need to be copied or transferred. I ask because I see certain references to mobile apps in preference folders in my user library. At least I think so.
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Change library by holding down the option key while starting iTunes.

    Correct.

I have no experience with apps. Copying the preferences files will save you some trouble in setting up as long as both iTunes versions are the same.
On the whole idea of using a flash drive, well, okay. I don't see a flash drive as being as robust and I would definitely make sure you maintain backups.

  • HELP!!!!!!!  Moving Library To Flash Drive

I Want to move all my songs onto a flash drive to free up space on my computer. Is this possible? Thanks For Any Help

  • Backing up iTunes and itunes library to flash drive

Ok so the wireless connection is messed up on my laptop and I need to back up both iTunes and the library. I'm not seeing an option for this on iTunes. How do I do it?

On the apple website - http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
What you really need to save is your itunes library and itunes content.
The itunes library is a file named iTunes Library.itl
The itunes content is music, TV shows, podcasts, etc..

  • I-Tunes won't play most of my i-Tunes library on external drive

OK, I store my music on an external hard drive and now i-Tunes will not recognize most of the my music. I've tried changing the i-Tunes music folder location several times under Edit/preferences/ advanced, but there is a huge amount of music that i-Tunes will not recognize (message - "The song" " could not be used because the original file could not be located, would you like to locate it?" ) It seems that tunes that have been added more than 6 months ago or so are not visible to i-Tunes, they show on the i-Tunes browser, and I know that the music files are there on the disc, in the folder, but for some reason i-Tunes can't locate them. Note - I do have two external hard drives for back up (I've had them fail on me before and it aint pretty when you don't have a backup of your backup) I switch them occasionally to hedge my bets. I've done a decent job of keeping both discs updated. Like I said, I've checked several times and can see the music files.
Any ideas? Thanks for any advice!

I have the same problem. So far this is what I've done but I am not 100% certain it will work. What I did was went to the file tab in iTunes and selected "Add to library". I then selected the iTunes folder in my hard drive and it is still reading it and adding to the library. When I'm done I plan to check for duplicates (if any) and reorganize the whole thing. I'll let you know how it went when it is done.

  • I tunes library / external hard drive / apple tv

I have copied my itunes library on to an external hard drive as the library is to large for my macbook.(I am adding my dvd collection to itunes to 'tidy up').
I have connected to apple tv no problem at all.
My problem is that if i want to watch a film from the library on the extarnal drive i have to copy the file into itunes on my hard drive. I dont want to keep doing this.
Is there a way that I can make apple tv or itunes see itunes on the external drive rather than on the hard drive?
    Thanks in advance.
    Tegbert

I posted an issue about this very same thing.  My iTunes media is on an external drive as well and it seems like all the trouble started to happen right after I upgraded to iTunes 10.4. I have a case open with Apple on it right now and it has gone all the way up to the engineer level.
I have replaced my external drive along with the USB cable and even plugged the drive into a different USB port.
If I copy one of the movies to the internal drive I do not have an issue so...  it seems like the trouble has to do with the content being on an external drive.  Apple does support this because they even have an article explaining how to do it properly: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
My entire Mac locks up when this happens so I have to hold the power button and restart the entire system.

  • Reloading Ipod music back onto I tunes Library

We have recently had to have our pc reloaded with windows xp. All my itunes were backed up but my daughters were not.!!!
She is not very happy with Dad as you can imagine?
Can you restore the music from the ipod back onto the PC's itunes?

    Hi earache1,
You can use a program called iPod Rip for Windows. This will let you get your songs back onto your computer.
    Hope this helps,
    -Travis
