Back up in PSE 8

I always back up my catalogue using Organiser and an external Hard Drive. Suddenly I am experiencuing a duplication of the catalogue folders. When the back up starts it records the usual pictures but on completion then goes onto record a second set of data. The second back up starts with B0000000dat and then records each file again showing a piece of paper with the top right corner folded down a globe with arrow indicators each side and then four horizontal lines each file number is also recorded. When I click on one of these files it takes me into IE 8 with a series of writing. I am using Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Can anyone please explain this sudden change? Many thanks.

Hi Roy,
I am not able to understand your problem completely. Can you provide some more information to understand the issue ?

  • PSE 10 as Aperture 3 External Editor

Hi, im brand new to PSE 10 and have configured it as my external editor in Aperture 3. On my first try I have come up with 3 questions that im hoping someone will be able to help me with.
    1. How do I get PSE 10 to work with the newest version of my image?
After editing the photo in PSE, it appears in Aperture as it is supposed to do. However - after further editing in Aperture then sending back again to PSE, it shows the first version i worked with in PSE...to the stage i left it at, and not the update edited version of the image in Aperture (hope thats clear)
    2. How to prevent bleeding into other areas when using the healing brush?
The reason I had to go back into Aperture for further editing (described above) was because the healing brush in PSE 10 could not seem to detect edges properly and looked a bit of a mess. I was working on a portrait shot with a dark background & the outline of the person blended with the background. Is there any way to detect edges so this doesnt happen, some setting ive missed?
    3. Can u unistall Organiser?
Im very happy with how Aperture organises everything and have no wish to use the organiser. Without even asking me, it copied all my photos into it (which im sure is taking up valuable disk space) Im wishing i had purchased the mac app store version now, which doesnt give you organiser. Is it possible to uninstall this?
Thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to help : )

Organizer never imports your photos on a mac unless you tell it to, and unless you import from iphoto it doesn't make copies when it does import. The actual disk space required is relatively small since organizer is just a database. You can't uninstall it unless you want to uninstall the editor, too. Just ignore it.
The healing brushes depend very much on the brush size. Don't use a bigger brush than you need. If the spot healing brush picks up areas you don't want, try the regular healing brush, where you option click to tell it where to sample for healing material. They are usually not a good choice at the edge of a high contrast area. Try the clone stamp there instead. Also, sometimes making a selection before you start with the healing brush can help to restrict it, but at the edge it may not give better results.
Your problem with aperture versioning is normal. Programs like aperture and organizer don't actually create new images when you change things--they keep a sort of set of instructions for their own use in recreating that state of the image when asked. You may find you need to export the image as a new file to get aperture to write those changes in a way that other programs can see, but I would ask this in the aperture forum at the apple support communities. (I don't use aperture, myself, so can't say exactly the best way.)

  • Where is the 'Watch Folders' option in PSE 9 Organizer for Mac?

I'm sure it's right in front of my face, but I can't find it. Thanks!

Thanks everyone for your replies. Bob, thanks to you especially for your candor. I use Adobe products for both photography and graphic design. I have been a loyal PSE user since PSE 4, but I use Photoshop (started out with CS2, now up to CS5) for all of my editing. I only use PSE for my digital asset management. The reason I need watched folders is that any new files I create in CS5 are not automatically added to my catalog in PSE. I switched to a Mac 3 years ago and wasn't happy with any of the alternatives, so I have been using PSE for Mac since version 9. However, over the years, I have found that I don't always remember to go back into the PSE catalog to import after working on something in CS5, so my catalog is always missing some files. I have found a watched folder plugin for Lightroom that seems to work pretty seamlessly in the background, but I found Lightroom not nearly as intuitive to use when I bought LR2 a few years back. Plus, facial recognition is a big feature for me, and LR4 still lacks that. I guess that, for Mac users, there's really no one solution that works as well as PSE does for Windows users.
I guess I'll have to continue my search...Thanks again for your replies!

  • Bugs in PSE-8

Since Photoshop Album, I have been using PSE versions 3, 4,and 7 for quite some time. Recently I "upgraded" to 8 (probably mistakenly without searching this Fourm first). I am having a terrible experience, and now wonder if this is general or restricted to me (touches of Woody Alan paranoia).
I made a backup of my pictues (~14'000 * 2 for edited versions), uninstalled PSE-7 and installed PSE-8. No problem. However, since then (April 14) the Organizer crashes all the time (I haven't really tried the Editor yet). Not in any particular order:
    1. It says "Out of Memory", even after working for a releatively short time, so there must be a memory leak somewhere.
    2. Despite regenerating all the thumbnails, when scanning through the workspace odd pictures are shown with a broken link, although "update thumbnail" (ctr-shift-U) fixes this. There is no pattern I can see and no links are broken.
On one ocassion a panarama I had made, and viewed in Full Screen, refused to display at a later date in FS, showing only a broken link icon.
    3. On half a dozen occassions PSE has simply stopped and asked me to send a report to Adobe. There is no obvious pattern here, either, except it seems to be when I am using full-screen viewing, or changing between this and the workspace (with pictures displayed sequentially).
    4. I set up the FS viewing mode with "zoom" transitions and when this finished displaying about 30 pictures it simply stopped at the last one and refused to exit full screen mode. Escape, enter, ctrl-y, crl-c or whatever had no effect. I had to bring up the Task Moinitor (or switch off the PC) to get access to the underlying windows on the screen.
    5. I tried to choose a different MP3 file to play when automatically viewing pictures in full-screen. One worked, but another seemingly equally-good file plays for about 3 seconds and stops (in iTunes or Windows Media there is no problem with any file).
    6. After some odd problem in full-screen mode it left the control bar in the middle of the screen and I coudln't fix this without restarting PSE.
I don't think this list is exhaustive, but I only started making notes when it dawned on me how bad the situation was. PSE-7 did crash occassionally ("Photoshop Elements has detected a problem and has to exit"), but nothing like this situation when I don't think I have managed to use the program much more than half an hour without a crash. And the problem with Adobe is that in the past they have seemed to refuse to provide patches to fix their bugs, but expect you to buy the next version (almost at full price). I wouldn't mind even that so much, except that as in my transition from PSE 7 to 8, there is no guarantee that the new version isn't going to be worse than the old one (I seem to remember that 5 was awful, but I didn't buy it). As I have said before, I would be only too happy to pay for a version with no more features, but with existing ones which have been debugged. Am I the only one with this wish?
Any suggestions (or perhaps sympathy!) greatfully received. Is it a problem with 64 bits? Can one go back from a PSE-8 catalog to PSE-7? Should I simply use Picassa?
    With regards,
            David M.

  • PSE-9 trial caused Corrupt Contour file in PSE-6, licensed version

I posted this question a couple of weeks ago as part of a reply to jon99, but never received a response.
It is the last remnant of several issues after installing/uninstalling PSE-9 Trial version, which said my PSE-6 license was no longer valid and would not let me run the app.
After running the validation tool and getting my license validation back for my PSE 6, I now get a "contour file is corrupt or damaged" error, only on startup of PSE-6.
It does not appear to affect the workings of the application, but I would like to clean it up.
If anyone know what the 'contour file' is, and how to fix it,  I would appreciate the help.
    Thanks in advance.
    D

You are a life saver Jon~
First option (License Retore) did the trick, though not totally clean.
The app started after giving me a black screen. During the startup I got an error window saying "The contour file is corrupt", but it continued to load.
After loading, I put it through its paces and it seems to be working fine, although I would like to resolve the 'contour file' issue, if you can help with that?
I guess I still wonder why Adobe Support kept me on the phone for 20 minutes (it took that long to translate), telling me there is no help, when they could have given me the same info that you did!  'Curiouser, and curiouser...'
Thanks again for the prompt and correct help. Now I can finish my project!

  • PSE 8 - Changing Dates - Serious problem

I have been using PSE for many years and have built up a library of almost 14,000 images, which are carefully tagged and dated, however I recently upgraded from PSE7 to PSE8 and, as recommended, I regenerated the thumbnails. I now find that PSE has changed the dates on about 4,000 of my photos and videos to the date of installation of PSE8 or of regeneration of thumbnails. The import date has remained unchanged but the date created and the date modified have both been changed on the file properties. The Exif Date as also been changed and mow matches the PSE Installation date as well.
I am running Windows 7 and first installed the trial version of PSE8 while I waited for the boxed version to come.
Since I am also experiencing some of the other bugs described in this forum, such as duplicated tags and the crashes when using people tagging etc. I am seriously thinking of going back to PSE7 and asking for a refund.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
I did a backup of the catalog just before upgrading and I assume that I could restore that, and then import all the new pictures since the PSE8 upgrade.
Does anyone have any recommendations for fixing this situation? I suppose I could deinstall PSE8 and PRE8, do a fresh install from the official disks, restore my PSE7 backup and reimport the recent photos. I have to say this sounds like a lot of work though.
    Peter

Thanks for the reply, John.  After I wrote my post I found your comprehensive listing of resolved and unresolved problems with the PSE Organizer in 7 and 8 and saw that you had already found an unresolved issue with both 7 and 8 changing dates and times.
I have not consciously changed anything at Photoshop.com.  I'm only using the on-line backup/synchronization as one form of back up.  I also back up to an external hard drive and DVDs.  But now that the main files are corrupted, later backups will be corrupted, too.
I did have the advanced option to "Resolve backup/sync conflicts automatically" checked by mistake for awhile and I believe the date problem occurred while I had that option selected.  Now that I've de-selected that option, however, the improper dates/times keep regenerating themselves.
This program is a quite disappointing upgrade, all in all.  As you note, it is a lot slower in several ways than PSE 7 was.  The program size may itself account for that since it is more than three times larger than 7 was.  What kind of programmer allows an automatic backup function to override dates and times which the user has specified in response to a dialog box which specifically asks you to specify dates and times?  And what kind of programmer hides the selection of file types for backup under "Advanced Backup/sync Options"?  Out of the box, PSE 8 has no files selected for backup.  The Backup/sync icon indicates that it's operating normally even when nothing at all is being backed up because you haven't clicked on any file types under "Advanced Backup/sync Options.
I saw someone asking about other organizer programs for electronic photos and other files.  One which was not mentioned, which has a basically bulletproof organizer function, is Creative Memories Memory Manager 3 for about $40.  Editing features are quite limited, but functional with no glitches.  Organizing is the main thing here; editing is secondary, as you'd expect from a program aimed primarily at the digital scrapbooking market.  The entire program is very easy to learn and use and backups work without a hitch.  You could always edit in PSE and then use another program like Memory Manager 3 to organize your files as long as you don't save the edited files as .psd files.  See:  http://www.creativememories.com/MainMenu/Our-products-and-services/Digital-Scrapbooking/Me mory-Manager%c2%ae  The reason my wife and I moved to PSE from Memory Manager was the more sophisticated editing functions available in PSE, but by comparison PSE's Organizer is second rate, to be kind.

Interesting, this is another symptom of a known bug: Photoshop.com doesn't handle unknown month, day, or time fields. (This is ironic, given that Adobe has been pushing a revision to its XMP standard specifically for handling unknown date/time fields.)  See this post for other issues wth Photoshop.com:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2306550#2306550
After you first sync with Photoshop.com, you can see that the thumbnails on Photoshop.com have incorrect date/times.  But for me to reproduce your bug, I need to then change the tags or captions of the thumbnails on Photoshop.com.  Then when I sync again, the incorrect date/times get copied back into the PSE catalog. If I don't add a tag or caption on Photoshop.com, the incorrect date/times don't get copied back.
Are you making any changes to the tags or captions of the photos on Photoshop.com?

  • PSE 10 Wont access Paper Profiles for printing

I have my ICC Profile installed.  However I can not access the paper types when trying to print on my epson 1280.  Paper type only shows "Unknown"
Im going crazy.   Can someone help?

Barbara, I installed the Mac OS 10.5.6 Combo update as you suggested. Unfortunately, no change in PSE 6's behavior with its "Photoshop Manages Color" in printing with ICC profiles. It did, however, fix a little delay problem I was having when putting my Mac to sleep. Thanks.
Well, from what I have experienced after days of experimenting, researching the Internet, writing at length on forums such as this one, and going through a lot of expensive OEM photo paper and ink, I can only conclude that the "Photoshop Manages Color" feature does NOT work in PSE 6 for the Mac under the Tiger AND Leopard OS's. The problem apparently is not printer brand specific, nor driver specific.
This important feature, which worked in PSE 4, is broken in PSE 6 for Mac -- and Adobe needs to do something about it SOON, because their customers are not getting the features that they paid for and are wasting a lot of time and resources trying to figure out this problem. Not once in two weeks did anyone on five different forums come forward and say, "this feature works for me" -- instead, just the opposite.
My guess is that many people try this feature and when it doesn't work for them they just go back to using the "Printer Manages Color" setting, or as in my case now, chucks PSE 6 and goes back to using PSE 4.01 until I can find an affordable non-Adobe alternative.
John, thanks for the initial heads-up about how prevalent this problem is.

  • PSE Nikon D7000 & Camera Raw

    HI,
Finally got PSE  to open my NEF files. Worked fine first time, now everythime I adjust in the carenra Raw screen, then go to "open image" - instead of opening it for editing, it saves to the desktop as a  XMP file- What is this???  must say, has put me off PS ( I am in the trial version) ??may go back to Aperture

Quit PSE then go to your username>library>preferences and delete:
    com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 Paths
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 settings
anything that begins Adobe Camera Raw Preferences.
Repair permissions and try again. That library folder is hidden if you are using 10.7. To see it there, option click the Go menu in the Finder.

  • Photobook files changed from .pse to .psd

I have successfully made several photo books using PSE7 and printing with Kodak. I was searching for the most recent photo book and found that it is in a folder as a .psd file and not a .pse file. As a result I can only view one page at a time as an image rather than a photo book. I wanted to update the photo book with some additional information. I have all the pages in the folder but have not been successful in attempting to get it back into a .pse file.
I have been doing some folder cleanup with PSE7 ( constantly checking to insure that images are still properly connecte) to organize the My Pictures file a little better and also just recently converted to Windows 7. I don’t know if this has anything to do with my problem or not. I did check my back up external drive and thee files in question are also .psd not .pse.
Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this?

Thanks for you reply C F McBlob.
I have not setup or initiated iCloud, at least not directly.  How would I know if iTunes is trying to look for files from iCloud?  Also, isn't iCloud only for purchased items unless you subcribe to iTunes Match which I have not.
I just tried searching for one of the problem songs in Spotlight and it shows up in the list of found files.  When I select the file it opens up iTunes and plays the song and it also shows up under it's iTunes folder along with the .url file, wasn't there before.  Hmm...   It's like the file exists but it is hidden from Finder or iTunes until I search for it in Spolight.
I have never seen anything like this before.  I sure hope I don't have to do this for every song.
Does any of this make sense to you?

  • How to back up from Photoshop Elements 8 to Revel

My photos were backed up from PSE 8 to the Elements backup on photoshop.com.  Now they have been automatically moved to Revel.  How do I back up more photos from PSE 8 to Revel?  When I try to do a backup from PSE 8 it connects to the old photoshop.com backup.

It sounds like you want to get more of your files onto Revel but are not sure how to since you can not save from Elements to Photoshop.com anymore and since Elements 8 does not communicate with Revel.   What you can do now it upload your photos to Revel directly from your Mac or PC. If you have a Mac, you can download the Revel app and upload from your Mac. If you have a PC, you can upload via a web browser at adoberevel.com. If you upgrade to Elements 11, you will have the ability to upload to Revel from Elements if you choose (it is not quite the same as the sync, but allows upload to or download from Revel) See the link below for more details.  I hope this helps. Let me know if you have further issues.

  • Why PSE 10 works fine while PSE 11 crashes?

I have used PhotoShop Elements (and Premiere) since 2003 (version 2).
I recently was lured into upgrading from version 10 to 11 by a couple of new features, but I had trouble from the beginning.
The first download would not start until I repeatedly accepted a series warnings that complained that something could not be located in the PLUGIN.dll .
The program worked but not well. For example it was not listed in Windows "Open with" list, I had to find the Topaz filters manually, etc.
Over a couple of weeks I downloaded it three times, from different sources and installed it again and again.
    Now it almost works:
The multiple startup warnings are now reduced to one "The procedure entry point HandleWindowFont could not be located in the dynamic link library PLUGIN.dll" after which I have to repeatedly press OK.
PSE 11 now starts from pointing to a JPG file in Explorer but does not open the file. I need to click on the file again, after PSE 11 has started, to load the file.
Once loaded the file always starts in Quick Mode, instead of the last mode used.
But what really irritates me is that PSE 11 drops out suddenly, usually after I invested a lot of time in an image.
I click a command and suddenly, in a blink, I am on the desktop with no trace of what I have been doing. No trace of it in the "Open recently edited files" list.
It was so sudden that it took me several events to notice that this seems to happen when I return to the PSE screen from a plug-in screen.
So now I save my work frequently during the process of editing a file in PSE 11.
By the way PSE 10 works fine and is solid. Is there any way to adapt the new "refine edge" feature to the previous version?
For now I am back to using PSE 10 because PSE 11 is not worth the aggravation.
On the other hand Premiere 11 seems to work just fine.
I am using a DELL Precision 690 with 4 GB of RAM, running Vista 32 Business.

Try making a direct shortcut for the Editor.
On Windows, Right click anywhere on the desktop and select New >> Shortcut
Then click the browse button and navigate to:
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 11\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe"
Then click Next; then click Finish.
To launch, try right-clicking on the new desktop icons and choose “Run As Administrator” which often improves stability.

  • Pse 8 and Intel Core Solo

I can't instal PSE 8 and then noticed that system requirements state that you have to have a multi core processor. So I thought I would go back and reinstall PSE 6 which works on my solo core computer but then I noticed that the system requirements for PSE 6 says multi core. What gives?
My question: Will PSE run on a solo core machine?
I also have a duo 2 core machine but PSE 8 won't install. I have followed all suggestions (uninstall, new admin account, etc.) Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

    Hi Ted,
I believe we connected earlier on and your issue was resolved? If that is the case, can you please mark this thread as Answered so that we can consider it as closed?

  • Can anyone demystify the PSE Organizer catalog backup options?

I need to backup my catalog--preferably just my catalog, not all my pictures (the picture files themselves are already backed up). More accurately, I would like my automated online backup service (Carbonite) to back up my PSE Organizer catalog for me, just as it has already backed up my pictures. But the catalog is in some caddywompus location that Carbonite doesn't back up by default. I think I can manually override Carbonite's default settings and tell it to back that location up anyway, if I only knew where and what files to look for.
If I click on Help > System Info..., PSE tells me my catalog is located in C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\clayscatalog. It doesn't go all the way to the file level, just down to that last folder, which shares the name of my catalog. But I have no idea which file inside of that folder is my catalog, or what to backup. Inside that folder called clayscatalog, there are the following items:
    BreezeData(folder)
    CAXMPFiles(folder)
    syncdb(folder)
    backupCt.dat
    catalog.pse9db
    collstatus.dat
    face.thumb.9.cache
    itemData.mk4
    rmf.3.cache
    tagstatus.dat
    thumb.5.cache
    watch.2.cache
Which of these files/folders should I be targeting for backup, all of them? And which would I browse to find in order to restore my catalog if my computer ever crashed and I needed to do a restore? Assuming all my photos are backed up and able to be restored to the same folder hierarchy, I assume one of these files/folders is going to have that information and be able to restore everything easily, preserving all my photo ratings, captions, tags, etc., right?
It would seem to make sense for the PSE to offer the option when you choose Backup from the file menu to back up all your catalog data only, as opposed to only having the option to backup everything, including all the picture files. Because I'm sure many people, like me, already have their picture files backed up and don't have need for that. Any guidance on this would be much appreciated.
    Clay

    First, short answer : the catalog consists in the whole folder you found. All those files are used in the organizer, but the .cache files which may have a big size will be regenerated by the organizer if they are deleted. The problem is this operation may be very long, so you will be better if you save everything;
If you use the backup and restore feature in the Organizer, you'll only have only to tell the restore process where your backup (of everything, files and folders) is located.

  • Aperture will not write over PSE metadata

I switched over to Aperture3 when I got my Mac a few months ago.  Previously I was using Photoshop elements on my Dell.  When I use the "Write IPTC Metadata to Master" function, it works well for any new photos that did not previously have keywords saved to the file.  However, it does not seem to be capable of deleting or updating the keyword metadata for files that already contained keywords from PSE.  Even more frustrating, the keywords in my aperature library revert back to the PSE keywords every time the system decides to reprocess the photos.  Anyone else having similar problems? Is there a way I can fix this?  Thanks!  I appreciate any advice you can give.

I still haven't figured out how to update the IPTC data to the original Master file that contains the PSE keywords.  However, I did find one way around it.  If I change the keywords in Aperture and then export the photos as versions, the Aperture keywords remain and the PSE keywords are gone.  That is what I wanted.  However, before I do this, I wanted to know if anyone knew if exporting the photos as versions compromises the photo at all.  In other words, how does the new exported photo compare to the original Master as far as photo quality is concerned?
    Thanks!

  • I want my photo files back on my hard drive, not on Revel

I uploaded about 5,000 photos to Revel but neglected to keep the originals on my hard drive. I want my photos back on my hard drive. How do I download the photos back into Adobe PSE 13 Organizer in the same date folders they were in before they all got transferred to Revel? Once I have my photos back, I want to delete the photos on Revel and then I'll selectively upload Mobil Albums from the Organizer. How do I keep Revel from wanting to upload photos? I am signed out, but everytime I sign in through PSE 13, Revel starts to upload photos and I want that stopped too. Clearly I have some settings which are causing this. Help and understanding would be very much appreciated.

    Hi seashel,
Welcome to the Apple Support Community!
It sounds like the iTunes icon may have been removed from your dock on your computer. You can find your applications and move them to the dock from the Launchpad. Please use the attached article for more information.
Mac Basics: The Dock holds your favorite apps, documents, and more
    Adding and removing Dock items
If you want to add an application to the Dock, click the Launchpad icon in the Dock. Then, drag an app icon from the Launchpad to the Dock. The icons in the Dock move aside to make room for the new item. If you want to add a file or folder to the Dock, just drag its icon from any Finder window (or the desktop) and drop it on the Dock.
    Cheers,
    Joe
