Back up iphoto with Toad's automator thing

I duplicated steps as directed in previous email....can I post a screen shot of results?
In case, I can't....my second iPhoto library is in documents folder. Result was couldn't create directory: users/farabee/documents/freebies (name of 2nd library)
I guess my question is: does that library have to be in pictures folder? Or what step am I leaving out?

lfarabee:
No it doesn't have to be in the Pictures folder but you'll have to edit the workflow in Automator so as to let it know where to look for the file. You'll also have to have the workflow save the file to a different location than the default or it will overwrite the backup file from the library in the Pictures folder. For ease of use, I suggest you put both libraries in the Pictures folder and name them differently. Then use iPhoto Library Manager to quickly change between the two.
You can modify the workflow application to do both libraries at the same time. See this screenshot of what my workflow looks like and how I have the backup files located in their own folder to prevent overwriting.
Read the Read Me file for iPhoto 7 on how to modify the workflow.

  • Does a Time Machine back up iPhoto with default settings? Because my (TM) did not back up iPhoto? I was shocked to find this out after my iMac crash!

This is a known issue with Time Machine. I suggest backing up iPhoto Library separately and not rely on Time Machine to do so. In fact if it were up to me I would not let you use Time Machine. I would recommend using one of the following for your regular and scheduled backups:
    Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup

  • Backing up iphoto with time machine

So i was backing up all my photos using time machine to a LACIE external hard drive and under Time Machine Preferences i clicked back up and it seemed to revert back to an older backup in May 2010 losing all photos and changes from May - Oct 2010. Can anyone please help me retrieve my photos?

This is a little more simple that all that.
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
No need for dmgs at all. No need for Syncing software.
Note: No Syncing software can run on an iPhoto Library. Period. There is none that can parse the Library database. Attempting to sync two Libraries will lead to damage to at least one of them.

  • Backing up iphotos with ATV

I have bought the ATV to meet a couple of needs. I read about viewing iphotos and they look great on the screen. Are they also backed up with the ATV? To pose the question another way, if I loose them on my laptop will I be able to retrieve them from the ATV. I understand the sync process only goes computer to ATV and not the other direction?
    thank you, a

    No.

Not without jumping through very unconventional hoops that are beyond the avregae user.
In short back them up on an external drive or optical media.

  • Way to import photos back into iphoto with tags intact?

I use iPhoto Library Manager to manage a few different albums ... decided to re-consolidate ... exported em out, then re-imported them into the default iPhoto Library ... but alas, the tags were gone!
I was wise enough to leave the other album alone ... is there a way I can do this without losing the tags?
    thanks Mac ppl

The only way to do this is to move the files between libraries using iPhoto Library Manager. Check out the merge feature.

Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
If you have problems restoring, try placing the iPod in recovery mode and then restore. For recovery mode see:

The external drive with my photo library went bad, but I have the photos on my ipad, ipod and iphone.  How to I get those photos back into iphoto on my macbook?

Are the photos you want to send back to your mac on your iPad, iPod, iPhone saved to the camera roll? If you have photos in other albums (not camera roll) share them to the camera roll.
Then connect your device via USB and lauch iPhoto. You will see your device as a camera in iPhoto.  Import those photos like you would import from a camera.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Backing up iPhoto - then deleting photos on your Mac, then backup with additional photos, will this lose any photos

Just wondering on the following when backing up Iphotos:
If you backup your iphoto libary from your mac then remove some of these photos on your mac (to create additional space on the hard drive), then add additional photos to your iphoto libary, and do a back up of your iphotos libary - will the new back up still keep the old photos (in the backup) that you have deleted?
As i have alot of photos on my Mac that are eating up my hard drive space, but i am to scared to do anything incase i lose any of my photos.
    Any ideas???
    Cheers

    Depends.
What are you using to back up?
A straight copy of the Library to the external will definitely overwrite the Library.
Here's a strategy that might help:
Here's one way to do what you want:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • I am able to click on a picture in iPhoto to edit it opens automatically in photoshop cs6.  However when i am done editing I can not save that image back into iPhoto.  Can anyone help with a setting I am missing maybe?

I am able to click on a pic in iphoto to edit it and opens automatically in photoshop CS6. However when I am done editing and save I can not save back into Iphoto.  Can any one help wiht this?

Thanks Terence. What a relief. I still don't understand what the book I read was talking about then. Here's a quote from the section I was referring to in "iPhoto 08: The Missing Manual" book, p 91 (ISBN: 0596-516185):
"Note, however, that the instant you edit a TIFF-format photo (Chapter 7), iPhoto converts it into JPEG.
That's fine if you plan to order prints or a photo book (Chapter 11) from iPhoto, since JPEG files are required for those purposes. But if you took that once-in-a-lifetime, priceless shot as a TIFF file, don't do any editing in iPhoto-don't even rotate it- if you hope to maintain its perfect, pristine quality."
After my test results, I thought maybe this was something that had changed from iPhoto 08 to iPhoto 09, so I went to the bookstore yesterday and checked the same book for iPhoto 09, and there it was, the same quote! (on a different page, of course).
Anyway, thanks once again for your confirmation that my test was indeed correct. Linda

  • Talk to me about backing up iphoto - the details of the files

when looking at the package content of my picture library, i see lots of files and folders. i'm wondering what this stuff is.
    1. in reading Toad's info on backing up and using his automator program, it only backs up the LIBRARY6.IPHOTO line item. Reading thru various support questions I think I understand that this 'thing' is EVERYTHING of the interface we use (albums, keywords and events, etc.). is this correct? so if i'm unable to access my pix or they all just disappear because of a corrupted db, then all i need to do is to delete the current file in the package contents and replace it with the back-up version i had saved somewhere else and this restores all my hard work, right? .... more questions to follow once this is answered.....
    2. What is the Library.iPhoto line item? It looks just like the Library6.iPhoto icon.
    3. Originals Folder? The contents of this folder (sub folders) look nothing like the events I have created. Can you tell me what's going on here?
    4. Modified Folder? Is it obviously just that?
Just trying to get a better grip of what is going on with the system. thx!

    Here’s a tip:
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three core folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Backing up with Old Toads Automator App backs up the database file. IF your DB is corrupted you can replace it with the back up. This preserves your organisation but note that it does not back up your photos.
    To back up iPhoto:
Use a Utility such as DejaVu or Chronosync or one of the many, many others (Search on MacUpdate). Use it to make a copy of the iPhoto Library. The more sophisticated ones will make incremental back ups.

  • Backing up iPhoto pics without using Time Machine or an external hard drive

I cannot figure out how to back up my photos on my one year old MBP. I haven't gotten around to buying an external hard drive (so many choices and there seems to be problems with every one I look at - advice?), but at this time the only important data on my MBP are my photos (approx 9 GB). I've searched the various forums, looked in The Missing Manual (Mac OS X Leopard), and read the help sections on the computer but cannot seem to find step-by-step directions for backing up to a flash drive or a few DVDs. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Unless you have an external storage source you can't backup your photos.
You could burn the image file to a DVD disc by selecting about 4GB of files in iPhoto and exporting the photos to a folder on the Desktop and burning that folder to a DVD with the Finder.
Or select about 4GB worth of files in iPhoto and use the Share->Burn menu option. That will give you a DVD disc with a mini iPhoto library on it that contains those 4GB of original files, their modified versions and all metadata associated with them.
When you want to copy any of the file on the disc back into iPhoto mount the disk in your optical drive and it will show in iPhoto where you can select what you want and drag to the Library icon to copy them back into the library.
I'm sure you have other documents on your MBP that you need to backup. An external FW hard drive for use as a Time Machine backup drive is essential if you value your photos and other data on the hard drive. Consider for a moment what you would have to do to get back where you are right now if you lost the entire internal HD.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Back up iPhoto 08' for the first time (different than last time I did it)

The last time I backed up my photo library was before I got iPhoto 08'. I know I should have done it a long time ago and backed things up at least once a week but I kinda got busy. Since my last backup I have also upgraded to Leopard, which yes I did back up my hard drive when I did that, but I also had the advantage of having an IT person personally helping me.
Today when I went to back up my library things were different. Rather than the old "iPhoto Library" folder that use to be in the pictures section, I just see a single file named "iPhoto Library" and when I click it, it launches iPhoto.
So my question is how do I back up my library now, and what ever happened to the "Original" and "Modified" folders? What I would really like to do is save my current library on an external with everything intact. Events, Albums, the order I added them in, etc. I want to clear iPhoto out completely and then re-import my current library.
I should probably mention that on the external hard drive right now is a back up of my old library from before my upgrade to Leopard and it still has the old setup of the iphoto folder and then inside that is the "Original" and "Modified" folders. How should I handle this, just delete it?

With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to see inside? Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look familiar? Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
What I would really like to do is save my current library on an external with everything intact. Events, Albums, the order I added them in
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder to the External. That's it.
I want to clear iPhoto out completely and then re-import my current library.
I'm afraid that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If you back up a library then trash it, then restore the selfsame library, how does that constitute a “clear out”?
I would delete nothing until I had the Maintenance project finished.
    As an Fyi
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
