Back up issues

I would appreciate any help with my ongoing back up problems.
I posted some time ago after purchasing a 2TB Lacie external drive to run Time Machine and to clone my HD via CCC on a dedicated USB socket. Received useful help here and all was working fine until I took my computer off site to do some work. Since then TM and CCC have been unreliable. Maybe it was coincidental, perhaps I should have turned both these functions off before disconnecting the drive.
Anyway, having endured a few months of being unable to back up, reformatting, repairing, erasing, repartitioning etc the drive neither TM nor CCC will now work.
CCC runs overnight and backs up only 7.7 GB of data and seems to be hung on a file Cloning ....bin/sh. I verify the partition and it says Appears to be OK. TM partition verifies the same but after 16GB of data I get an error message saying
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup directory.
I really have no idea what to do from here. Is there a corrupt file on my hard drive? Is the Lacie Drive faulty? More concerning is I have 250 GB on my hard drive which is not backed up.
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated
thanks OB

All has been operating fine with both CCC and TM until recently at various times the partitions would disappear from the desktop and mysteriously reappear. I have disconnected and restarted. I have disconected the powercord for a time as I have found this can help when restarting.  CCC works fine but I get an error message saying TM drive (partition) is read only. When I Get Info it says the same- Read Only. I selected the partition in DU and ran Verify Disc and received the following
Verifying volume “Time Machine”
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Keys out of order
The volume Time Machine needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
The Repair Disc option is greyed out, any input greatly received
thanks OB

  • Back up issue for MBP stuck on grey screen

    Recently my MBP went down with the grey screen of death. I've tried all the steps recommended in Apple's support document up until archive and install and archive and erase. Before I try the final two steps I was hoping someone could advise me about a back-up issue, and how to restore if a new hard drive is needed.
    I have been backing-up to an external hard-drive (western digital my book 1TB) quite regularly. My last back-up was only a couple of weeks before the grey screen problem and since then I'd uploaded some photos and messed around on a project in imovie. I can access the hard drive in target mode and have transferred the photos to an imac ( as well as a couple of other files that had been changed) and wondered what my options were from this point.
    If I end up having to install and erase, will it be simple to restore all my files from the last time machine back-up or do I need to clone my HD with Carbon Copy Cloner? I've read that I would need to format my external hard-drive and partition it before cloning the MBP hard-drive, which would erase all my old time machine back-ups since it is not partitioned.
    I'm quite confused as to how to proceed best and would really appreciate some input from more technical minded people than myself.
    Thanks in advance.

    I've tried all the available options, including archive and install and then erase and install, however, when I tried to erase got the following message:
    'volume erase failed: could not unmount disk'
    I have tried unmounting in disk utility to no avail. Does anybody have any suggestions or should I visit the apple store ( I have no protection plan)?
    Is the hard drive shot, even though I was able to access it in target mode to drag and drop my user folders on to an external hd?

  • IPhone 5 (iOS 6.1.4) back up issue

    This started of late; every time I try to back up I get the message "iTunes could not back up the iPhone "... iPhone" because the iPhone disconnected" while it's still connected via Lightning. It goes through suncing just fine, but does not back up.
    Your input is appreciated!
    Thanks.

    I would say that the servers are busy, overloaded and it is effecting your information. This can happen time to time, especially with such a popular network. I really don't think it's an iPhone issue, I think it's something going on with Twitter, definitely since you also tried from Safari and it didn't work from there. Good luck!

  • How can I get back old issues from my TIME app?

    Hi, I hope someone can help me.  I've been trying to get help for a month now.  I had purchased several issues from TIME app but when I just got my ipad 2, I couldn't get the issues back.  I used the same ID and password.  I decided to try buying a new issue and when I did, I had an email from itunes warning me that it was not my usual ID.  I am very confused.  I wrote to TIME and they say I should contact itunes.  I have spent hours trying to contact itunes for help.  They seem uncontactable.  Can someone please tell me if I can somehow get my old issues back?
    Karen

    If they were not backed up or part of photostream, then no, you cannot.

  • SSD/HDD Time Machine Back Up Issue

    I am having an issue with my 2010 13" MacBook Pro.
    A few months ago I removed the optical drive, replaced it with the existing HDD, and then replaced the HDD with an SSD.
    The SSD runs my OS (Mountain Lion 10.8.4) and Applications, while the HDD is where I store my Home Folder.
    I did a Time Machine Back Up in March using a SeaGate external hard drive, with no issues.
    Last week I updated the Time Machine Back Up using the same external hard drive, but this time something has gone wrong.
    I am unable to move files within my system without Finder prompting me for a password.
    I am unable to write to any external USB as I do not have 'permission to perform some actions'.
    I am unable to connect to external servers via VPNs.
    Finder does not open a new window when slected, I am forced to press 'Comman+N' every time.
    Numerous other issues.
    I have read that it's an issue to do with ACL's, but since my Home Folder is not on my Startup Disk, there is no way for me to do this.
    I am the only account on the computer, and both drives have 'Read & Write' permissions.
    Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
    Please feel free to ask for more details.
    Thanks.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
    These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
    Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
    Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
    Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
    Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
    This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}' | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
    Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
    osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
    Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Time Machine back up issue

    Heya Guys!
    Not sure this is in the right place so please move it if needed.
    Ok, so I have an external hard drive, and I am trying to back up my mac through Time Machine. My issue is that it gets to a certain point where it will say 'The backup was not performed because an error ocurred while copying files to the backup disc. The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk'.
    I repair the disc, and I thought I'd figured it out it, but now every single time it tells me to repair the disc. I have bought a brand new hard drive to do this with and it had the same thing.
    Also it will get to saying that it has only 148 mb to go, will do it really quick then will go on to back up more data that wasn't there before in the bar, and then will say as above about disc repair.
    I have no idea if it is actually backing up, as when I look into my hard drive, the .(file format) is .inprogress and the time machine sign always ends up saying back up failed.
    I haven't a clue how to resolve this, so any help would be wonderful. Even if someone could just reassure me that yes it has backed up properly, that would be brilliant.
    The hard drive I am using for this is a Seagate GoFlex 500GB and I did buy a Seagate External 1TB that I partitioned so I could use it on a Mac to use it with originally, but reverted back to my GoFlex.
    Thanks,
    Simon

    I've just run Carbon Copy Cloner to back it up too and that has revealed where the problems are. Most of these I already have on my External Hard Drive safe but not the others, and since it is my first ever back up I don't want to delete something off my Hard Drive that I can't get back on it somehow. The problem areas are below:
    ATIRadeonX2000GLDriver (located in system/library/extensions/atiradeonx2000gldriver.bundle/contents/macos)
    Media Toolbox (located in system/library/privateframeworks/avfoundationcf.framework/support/mediatoolbox/ framework/versions/A/mediatoolbox)
    Core AUC (located in system/library/privateframeworks/coreauc.framework/versions/A/coreauc)
    I was also told that one of my files needs to be repaired as it failed to open, but I have no idea how to do it. It is located here: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner
    I'm guessing these are what is causing my issues, but I'm not exactly computer savvy when it comes to these sorts of things, so I don't know whether deleting them is a good idea, especially when I'm not sure if they are on a disc somewhere or not.
    Thanks for the help so far guys! :-)

  • Back order issue

    Dear All,
    Pls help me to resolve an issue with Back Order Processing (TCode V_RA). I m getting an error when i click Backorder for a Sales Doc:  Check the settings for checking group 02 and checking rule
    Thank you!

    Hi,
    Please go through this once.......and check according to this...
    Backorder processing is a functionality in SAP where you can change the committments and over-ride the blockage of stocks
    marked against sales documents/deliveries. For e.g. you receive an order from a very important customer for material "A" but
    the entire quantity of A is committed to another customer "B" via earlier sales orders and this is where BACKORDER processing helps you to change the committment and shift stock due for B to A. This is the benefit of this funtionality.
    OMIH - Checking rule for updating backorders
    OPJL   - Define new checking rule
    OPJJ   - Define scope of check
    V_RA - Backorder Processing
    Data selection:-
    Sold-to-party             Customer code            Mandatory
    Sales Organization                                         Mandatory
    Distribution Channel                                       Mandatory
    Division                                                         Mandatory
    Changed confirmed quantity :-
    Tick the material you want to changed and click the Backorder button
    Confirmed quantity that still can be changed are highlighted.
    V.15 - Backorder List
    Sales Organization                                         Mandatory
    Distribution Channel                                       Mandatory
    Division                                                         Mandatory
    I Hope it mightbe solve your problem...
    Regards,
    Reddy.

  • Latest Leopard and LR 1.3.1 back-up issue. Thoughts please.

    Hi All,
    Running the latest Leopard and LR 1.3.1.
    Transition to 1.3.1 went smoothly (or so it seams) But backing-up seems to be an issue.
    Upon opening LR and trying to back-up, I get a dialog box that states "Lightroom is unable to back-up catalog, do you wish to continue?". If I continue, it does open up fine and appears to be fully operational. I have tried the 'Optimizing Library', but still behaves the same.
    FYI, this on a new MacBook Pro Intel machine, and the file was originally created on a Power PC G4 machine. If that should make a difference, not sure.
    Thanks in advance, for any suggestions.
    Sol

    Try the following with Lightroom off, select the folder enclosing your catalog file, hit apple-I, disclose the sharing/permissions tab, hit the little padlock right bottom, make sure the permissions for your account are set to read&write. Then click on the little popup on the bottom (might look grey but it is still active) that has a little gear and a triangle and do "apply to enclosed items". On Tiger it is just a click box I think but it works the same. Now run Lightroom and see if this solves the problem

  • HT4946 Has anyone solved the locked back-up issue?

    Like many other users, when I try to restore my iPhone back-up, I am getting the message "The password you entered to unlock your iPhone backup was incorrect. Please try again." even though I definitely did not choose for my back-up to be encrypted. I have tried pretty much every password I've used in my life. There is no caps issue. There is no Apple store in the city I am in, so I cannot go to the Genius Bar. All the discussion I'm finding here and on google seems to be ancient, but this just happened to me today.
    Can anyone help?

    So why won't my password work?
    A quote from another thread:
    "Long story short the Apple Genius Bar rep told me that they KNOW it's a software flaw, but unfortunately, they have no way to fix it, other than restoring my phone to factory settings" (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3407403?start=15&tstart=0)
    I am not the only one with this problem. I was hoping someone had a solution or even a helpful suggestion.

  • PanelTabbedPane and Backing Bean issue

    I have a page with 2 components: a "save" button and a tabbedPane with serverSideTabSwitch set to "true".
    The tabbedpane contains 2 tabs and in each tab there is an inputfield whose value is linked to a backing bean.
    If the user enters a value in the input field of the first tab, then clicks the second tab, enters a value in the input field of the second tab and then clicks the "save" button, only the value entered in the last chosen tab is set in the backing bean (and thus saved)
    Is there a solution for this problem , so that the information in all tabs is set in the backing bean (and also validated) ?
    A snippet of my JSP:
    <h:form>
    <h:commandButton action="#{testtabBean.save}" value="Save" />
    </h:form>
    <t:panelTabbedPane serverSideTabSwitch="true" >
    <t:panelTab id="tab1" label="Tab1">
    <h:inputText value="#{testtabBean.text1}"></h:inputText>
    </t:panelTab>
    <t:panelTab id="tab2" label="Tab2">
    <h:inputText value="#{testtabBean.text2}"></h:inputText>
    </t:panelTab>
    </t:panelTabbedPane>
    My backing bean:
    public class TestTabBean {
    private String text1;
    private String text2;
    public String getText1() {
    return text1;
    public void setText1(String text1) {
    this.text1 = text1;
    public String getText2() {
    return text2;
    public void setText2(String text2) {
    this.text2 = text2;
    public String save() {
    return null;
    }

    3 hours later is worked out is should be false :) Fixes the issue.
    <t:panelTabbedPane serverSideTabSwitch="false"

  • I am experiencing very slow import and backing up issues.

    I am experiencing very slow import and backing up catalog on exiting Lightroom. This is a very recent issue. I use RAW files.

    The type of files you are importing will have an effect on the speed of the import process. Larger files, like raw sensor files, are normally much larger than JPG files.
    But if this is something new, the slowness, and you are using the same camera with the same size files as previously then it's not just the file size.
    What type of computer and what operating system are you using.

  • CUCM Subscriber back-up issue

    Quick question :
    I have an SFTP server, which I managed to configure on CUCM PUB fot the back-up purpose.
    While doing the back-up, it manage to back-up PUB but back-up to SUB is failing, I could see that the sftp server IP address is pingable through PUB but not through SUB( they both are located at different DC with different IP ranges).
    Not sure, if that is the reason SUB is not able to back-up...... ? or, if SFTP is reachable via PUB, SUB should also be backed up.
    I can see replication is working fine in the cluster and both PUB and SUB can talk to each other.
    Any advise??

    Thanks Chris, I am waiting for required routing to be done.
    Once that is finished, i will test it again and confirm if that resolved the issue.... :-)

  • Back up issue / iphoto issue

    Tonight I went to sync. back up took 2 hours, longer than ever. after the sync my itunes now has TWO "Purchased on X's iPhone" folders.
    One has two items in it, one has 3 items in it. No idea why this happened.
    Any way to fix it or combine them? Deleted old back up and tried again, back up took less than 2 minutes this time. Still have both Purchased folders.
    Camera Roll: when I import my photo's to iPhoto, I had been keeping the originals instead of deleting them.
    When searching for solutions to my sync issues on these boards it said I could import, then tell it to delete the camera roll.
    I tried this, it will not delete the camera roll. Am I going to have to go to the camera roll on the phone and delete ever picture?
    Also I dont want all these separate photo folders on my phone.
    Camera roll, photo library, last 12 months, last import iPhoto, iphone picts.
    Seems rather silly to have 5 folders with all the same pictures in it.
    Any way to narrow this to camera roll and Photo Library on the phone.
    I don't even understand the iPhone picts folder on the phone, it has ONE photo in it and it didn't copy to the photo library.

    No clue re Purchased folders.
    Yes, I think you'll have to delete from the Camera Roll on the phone. iPhoto only offers to delete the pix it just imported.
    To get photos from the Camera Roll into iPhoto, you need to plug in the phone, launch iPhoto and specifically import them. They do not automatically copy.
    Re the photo folders (actually albums) listed in your phone--when you plug in the phone, in iTunes, look at the sync settings for Photos. I think you must have those albums selected. Uncheck them.

  • HT3275 Time Machine back up issue

    Hi, I have been using Time Machine for a couple of years backing up to a Tim Capsule. Now getting the following error message "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder". Does anyone know what the issue may be?

    Standard Lion/Mountain issue.

  • Time Machine Inherit back up issue - Migration assistant

    Mac Book Pro running 10.7.5
    Migrated to (using Migration assistant)
    iMac running 10.7.5
    (this iMac was already formatted as another unit, user name - not brand new)
    Ethernet network - iMac is now cabled to the time machine - all other machines are turned off/disconnected from network and time machine is turned off on other machines (studio network of 5 machines)
    - did not select inherit back-up when prompted.
    Now I cannot inherit back-up from old mac - even though all data, settings, files transferred and users are the same - all is good with the transfer.
    - when I open time machine it wants to do a completely new back-up and I cannot find a way to inherit back-ups.
    Note: I have managed to follow many of Pondini's posts and recommendations regarding what to look for and how to do it - ie.make sure I have only one user (the original user from old macbook pro) in preferences - and the old user from the iMac computer was deleted - etc.
    Is my only option to do the following? This seems a bit out of my skill set...
    http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html
    Thanks in advance,
    Dean

    Note - when I tried now - Pondini's suggestion in Terminal it gave me this error/prompt.
    The image "Henry.sparsebundle" can't be inherited because it would conflict with "Valentino (2).sparsebundle".
    I have multiple machine back-ups on this time capsule - could that also be an issue?
