Back up - large files - external USB drive - copy failure

Just the facts:
I cannot backup my Music folder to an external USB FAT32 drive. I have no large single files over the FAT32 limit of 4GB. The copy process stops at various amounts progess: 500MB to 6GB. My Music folder is ~16GB total in size. I recently did a clean install from Tiger. I had no issues moving my 14GB Music folder in Tiger to this same external drive.
1) Has anyone solved this?
2) Has anyone talked to Apple support in a store or over the phone on this?
3) Anyway to highlight a (likely) important issue with Leopard to the Apple folks?
There are numerous posts all dealing with moving/copying large files. Seems to be a common issue to Time Machine, iDisk, external drives, copying large folders to Desktop, and others.

PS New Mac user and really like it so far. I realize these are just Leopard "birth pains."

This is the Windows forum, not the Mac forum.
But it's the same. Simply drag the iTunes folder to the external drive.
Or use a backup prgroam such as SuperDuper!
You do have a bootable backup of your internal HD, correct?

After restoring my system, I began rebuilding the file system. I am on a Vista (Home) based Presario laptop (CQ60-211DX) When I attempted to recover the files, I backed up to an external USB drive, I ran into a problem.
I have been unable to find a way to restore the backup using either the BIOs based utilities of the Windows Backup and Restore programs. The backup exists on the drive, I already confirmed it's presence on the drive.
Does anyone have an idea how to go about this? THe article listed on the HP support forum does not work.

Errors on external USB drive

I'm trying to track down the cause of failed backups to a brand-new 300Gb Seagate drive in a external USB <-> SATA enclosure.
I observe these errors in Retrospects verification phase.
These errors could
- be 10.4.6 not playing well with external USB drives - that the new drive is essentially DOA
- that the enclosure is a dud.
- reflect an inability on Retrospect's part (e.g. unable to work properly with USB drives on 10.4.6)
I've asked on the EMC Retrospect forum for their take on this, buts that's a very slow forum...
Any pointers are welcome. I strongly prefer not to have to buy commercial solutions; after all, the "fix" may be to ask the supplier to take his drive back and refund me and I wouldn't want to spend if that's the case. Command-line solutions are fine.
The data can be correctly backed up to another external drive (via Firewire) so its not the source data. Its not the specific USB port: tried other ports, etc. At one point there were some errors reported by Disk Utility, but I've repaired these and it now claims all is well.

Anyway, an upgrade to OS X 10.4.7 (from 10.4.6) seems to have put this right, after a lot of different testing exercises and reading. At least for the first time in many attempts I've been able to run a sizeable backup using Retrospect without the verification pass yielding hundreds of errors.
It would seem, at least for Retropsect users, that OS X 10.4.6 needs to be avoided if you intend backing up to an external USB drive--?

HP dv6-6188ca windows 7 pro 64b amd chipset 8G locks up copying files to/from external usb drive

When ever I try to copy a large (>2G) file to or from a external usb drive the computer starts the copy but gets stuck. It has to be powered off and the battery removed to get it to work again.

Using Windows 8.1 with a 3 - 4TB USB Segate drive that is using Microsoft's bitlocker. It seems I can copy small files w/out issues; however, copying large files and directories causes this error. Connectivity is USB 3.0 from a Dell
Latitue3 e6520 to Segagate drive.
Can anyone share fix or determine methodology to fix?

Error copying large files from USB HDD to MyCloud

I am trying to copy a some large files (several GB) from a USB HDD to mycloud drive using the WD My cloud software as described in this post:http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-My-Cloud/Transferring-Large-Amounts-of-Data-to-the-My-Cloud-and-a-Coupl-e/td-p/620219but the copy grinds for some time and then fails. Is there a limit on the file size or amout of data that can be copied in one operation. I am using latest software and firmware. Windows 8.1 if that is relevant. Thanks in advance.

Trouble accessing files on external USB drive after 10.6.8 update

Upgraded to Mac 10.6.8 on my MacBook Pro (I'm not a techie, but the "About This Mac" thingy says 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 - I assume that means something to somebody). Since the upgrade, I've been having problems accessing data on an external HD connected via USB - there were no issues before the upgrade, but now it's impossible to even navigate to a particular file or subfolder half the time, as the process freezes 95% of the time (every so often I am able to get through, for no obvious reason) - usually I just get what looks like an empty folder and a little spinning thing in the bottom right-hand corner. Sometimes when I do get to a file - say it's a ZIP file - I'll try to unZIP it and the process will hang; if I try to drag it to the desktop and unZIP it there, I can't get it to copy to the desktop, I just get the "copying files" box and a bar that never shows any progress, it just hangs at zero bytes out of whatever it might be.
Also having intermittent issues with another external USB drive, which is the one I use for Time Machine - about one in every five backup attempts is successful, the rest of the time I get a message saying the backup couldn't be performed.
I have two external FireWire drives as well, and I'm having no trouble with either of those - so I'm assuming the problem is USB-related (and 10.6.8 related, since none of this was happening before the upgrade).
So - I'm wondering if anybody else is having the same issues, and f there's a solution that a non-techie like me could handle that won't make blood come out of my ears.

Thanks baltwo - the PRAM tip was helpful. For some reason I still have trouble accessing a few files, I'm putting that down to them being somehow corrupted. Eric, thanks, but I tried using Disk Utility and the communication problems I was having with the drive meant that the repair couldn't be performed. I may try again now that that side of things seems to be running a little more smoothly. Anyway, thank you both!

Time Capsule external USB drive won't reconnect remotely over Back To My Mac

I'm running a Mac Mini at work, connected via ethernet to an enterprise network (I have no idea what routers they are using, or how they are set up).
At home, I have a MBP laptop and a Time Capsule (hardwired to cable modem) with an external USB drive attached.
All 3 machines (Mac Mini, MBP, TC via Airport Utility) have Back To My Mac switched on.
I can access the external USB drive on my home TC from my work Mac Mini....until the Mini falls asleep. When I wake it back up, the connection back to the TC fails. However....after restarting the Mini, the connection works again.
My first thought was that the corporate network / firewall / etc was causing the problem - not leaving correct ports open, or someting to that effect. However, I realised that if that were the case, restarting the Mini shouldn't help, but it does.
Does anyone have any idea how sleeping breaks being able to access a TC's external drive remotely over BTMM?
The Mac Mini is a 2.3GHz Core i5 with 8GB RAM and plenty of HD space.
The MBP is a 15" late 2013 retina, 2.6 GHz Core i7, 16 GB RAM, also plenty of HD space.
The TC is a 2 TB 4th generation model.

Sorry that did not work. This works well for me using Lacie drives, but I haven't tried Iomega.
Have you checked Iomega's site to see if any software/firmware updates available?
Also noticed during a quick search that a number of users are reporting mounting problems with Iomega. Not sure if this applies to you or not.

Thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, that will not work. You will need to connect the drive directly to your Mac if you want Time Machine to backup the drive to the Time Capsule.

Copy iTunes 9 Smart Playlist to External USB Drive

Is is possible to copy iTunes 9 Smart Playlist to an external USB drive without burning CDs/DVDs? I have about 1TB of iTunes Purchased content that I have in a Smart Playlist (Kind=Purchased, Kind=Protected) that I would like to backup to another external USB drive. Time machine does not back up automatically to an external usb drive

When I use Time machine to back up to an external usb hd, (Western Digital with I have to use the "backup now" command. When I "Enter Time Machine" all I see is the last backup. When I look on the drive, all the backups are listed in a "Backups.backupb" directory conatained in a Sparsebundle directory. Is there some way to set it up so it backs up automatically and show all my backups?

By system clock, I meant the one that displays the time in the menu bar. I think I made up some new terminology!
Needless to say, I have not seen a situation like yours before.
Hopefully one of my more technical virtual colleagues will have more suggestions. I am sorry I have not been more helpful. I do not want to suggest things that will take your time that "might" work.

I'd like to use an encrypted disk image on an external USB drive as the target for my Time Machine backups, but it seems that Time Machine will only recognize physical external drives, and not mounted disk images in the "Change Disk..." window.

Actually, with a few caveats, it is possible.
Just follow one of the many tutorials on the web for creating an encrypted sparse bundle for use with "TimeMachine" on a network volume (i.e. MACaddress.sparsebundle naming convention, password stored to the system keychain, etc.), and then attach the drive locally and select the drive (not the mounted disk image) as the backup drive. As "Glen Carter" reported in another thread on this site, "TimeMachine" is smart enough to know to mount the disk image for backups when the drive is connected locally.
There are caveats for example, - while backups remain automatic, it appears that actually browsing the backups requires that the disk image be mounted manually first, then accessed via the "Browse Other Time Machine Disks…" option.
One caveat to pay particular attention to is what happens when the drive starts to fill up and space becomes limiting - the processes of deleting expired backups and sparse image compaction may not be well integrated, as discussed here:

The article implies that the end result could be deletion of all backups! The article is dated March 2008 but I have no idea whether the issue has been resolved.
Just be advised that it is an unsupported configuration so the extra security will come at the cost of some convenience and potential increase in the chance of data loss. Most users recommend using supplemental backup strategies since the intended purpose of TimeMachine is actually very limited and often misunderstood. Apart from that, it is a rule written in stone that whenever encryption is used, the encrypted items themselves must be backed up.

Automator to mount multiple ISO files on external USB drives

I have several ISO files on an external USB drive on a Mac mini. Double clicking on any of the ISO mounts it, one at a time.
I need to have an automator that mounts ALL ISO it can see on a given USB external drive. I have written an Apple script but that hangs up the Mac mini. I need help because I am not familiar with Applescript or Apple automator. I used Unix years ago, butg have a hard time with AppleScript.

Your other problem sounds like another computer has the files open or application has the files open simultaneously. Try shutting down your Mac, and isolating your Mac from any network and try rebooting again in safe mode by holding the shift key at startup.
