Back up partially

how can i back up only a part.. of my library.. can this is possible.. i hope so..
bcs, the backup wizard ask to back up the entire library ..the purchases... and the last files added.. but it wont ask if i want to back up for example only a part of it.. the simple purpose of this is that i want to back up only my podcast i have a hundred of them.. and video podcast.. and i wont lose them... but they have a big part of my hard disck.. this bcs .. i´d like to take advantage for the feature that comes with itunes, backing up in a diferent format than the mp3 or ACC or mp4 .. i read that the backups cant be readen in a normal cd player eith mp3 .. and that stuff... ok .. regards...can this is possible?

If you use the backup utility you can only back up the entire library or iTunes Store purchases. And that backup is readable by the iTunes restore feature only. You would just have to copy the files in your podcasts folder elsewhere and in their normal format to backup just them...

  • Disk Utility Problems - Can't make image or restore

I am having difficulty in making disk images & restoring using disk utility.
Issue 1 - Making an image of a DVD for the purpose of burning a copy (non commercial)
In DU I select the DVD in the sidebar, click new image DVD/CD master & save to desktop. The progress indicator reached about halfway & I get the following message: Unable to create "image name.cdr" - input/output error.
The source DVD in in the internal optical drive.
What causes this problem & can it be fixed? Why is the image .cdr not .dmg?
Can an image be made directly from a DVD?
As a workaround I used DU's restore function to copy the entire DVD contents to a free (27GB) partition on an internal HDD (not system disk) in the hope that I could make an image fron there. As soon as I clicked on restore both the DVD & target drive unmounted. After the progress bar reached 100% I got the following error message: Restore Failure. An error (5) occurred while copying. Input/output error
However if mounted in DU the partition has been renamed to the DVD name & the contents seem to be the same as the DVD.
    What is error 5?
I then created an image from this partition using DVD/CD-R master format which worked OK but created a 27GB image - too large to burn!
How can I make the image small enough to fit on a DVD-R?
Can an image be made directly from a DVD?
    Is this normal DU behaviour??
Once I get this right I plan to used DU to backup to an external HDD (I'm in the process of recovering from a drive failure and although I have most of my data back through partial backups & recovery like many before me I'm going to have better backups from now on!!)
    Any help would be apprecialted.
    Thanks in advance.

It may be the the disc after all...
I'm still having the same problem, but I also discovered that I cannot get the install disc to get past the "spinning gear" stage when trying to start up with it, so yes, it's most definitely useless! My MacBook is still under warranty so I phoned Apple, and explained the problem and everything I did to ensure it wasn't hardware related. So they're sending me new install discs. I'm not 100% convinced yet that the problem is the install disc, but we'll see...my only doubt remains from the fact that I was able to make a disc image of it on my G4. That said...
I did a hardware test (long version, and everything is reportedly fine), played dvd movies, burned cd's, installed software from discs, etc, and it seems the drive is working fine, however, it could possibly be sensitive to even the slightest smudge or scratch (the install disc has a few very slight marks on it that shouldn't be a problem, and I cleaned it thoroughly). The only other time I had a problem was when I went to rip a song from a cd to iTunes where it hung and and then failed to complete the task. (The cd itself played without issue though.) I checked it for dirt/scratches: it had a couple of barely imperceptible smudges and one shallow scratch. I cleaned it, tried it again and iTunes was able to import from it after that. This remains the only time (so far) I've had a problem with a disc besides my install disc.
I want to be able to repair disk before I install 10.5.3, and back up everything, including the install discs. My Macbook came with 10.5.2 and except for this problem, everything's been working fine.
When I get my new install discs, I'll post how that went. They should arrive within a week or so.
DrHouseTF: I checked out your thread. I've never tried to make copies of game disks via DU, but maybe it's due to copy protection measures on the disc itself?

  • Converting a delete statement using VPD policies and context

    Hello,
I'm trying to convert a delete statement in a update statement using VPD policies and context.
+/* Supose the user 'user1' already exists. This is an application user */+
    conn user1/pwd
    create table user1.test_a (
    id                number(4),

    deleted           number(1)
    +);+
    alter table user1.test_a add constraint test_a_pk primary key (id);
    insert into user1.test_a (1, 'abc', 0);
    insert into user1.test_a (2, 'def', 0);
    commit;
I'd like to convert each physical deletion into a logical deletion: statements like "delete from user1.test_a where id = 1" must be converted into "update user1.test_a set deleted = 1 where id = 1".
I've found the following way: I will create a policy to avoid physical deletion. Additionally, the policy function should update the deletion flag too.
    conn user1/pwd

    conn user1/pwd
    SQL> delete from ilogdia.oplsimulaciones sim       where sim.id = 9999;

No rows has been deleted, but the update stmt does not work. That means, the "deleted" flag has not been updated.
    Any ideas?

The policy function is applied once per statement execution. The policy function executes first and the UPDATE statement, presumably, updates no rows because the context is not yet populated. The row-level populates the context (I'm assuming that your session can even see context values populated by an autonomous transaction-- I would guess it could but I'd have to test that) after the UPDATE statement is already complete. The COMMIT in the row-level trigger is also pointless-- it only applies to changes made by the current autonomous transaction, of which there are none-- it cannot apply to changes made in other autonomous transactions. Declaring the row-level trigger to use autonomous transactions doesn't seem to accomplish anything other than to open the question of whether the values set in the context by the autonomous transaction are visible in the caller's transaction.
Even if this, somehow, did work, using autonomous transactions would be a very bad idea since Oracle is free to roll-back a partially executed statement (and the work done by its triggers) and re-execute it. Oracle does that with some regularity to maintain write consistency.

  • 2.6 won't store presets with catalog

I have all my presets stored in the same directory along with the catalog. After upgrading to 2.6, the user home directory presets folder is used again and as far as I can tell, the checkbox "store presets with catalog" doesn't have any effect.
has anybody else seen the same problem?

I disagee. You've already discovered that Web Galleries remain in the default location when you use "Store Presets with Catalog", and there are other things as well which remain in the default location. So if you want to backup your entire Lightroom environment, including settings, now you have to backup not only the Lightroom Settings folder adjacent to the catalog, but also the Lightroom folder in the appdata area of your user profile. It's far simpler to leave everything in the default location (cos you still have to back it up, right), than mess about with backing up partial sets of settings.
Plus, as Sean says, leaving them in the default location means any new catalog (e.g. for testing) gets access to your presets irrespective of where you locate it.
To be honest, I don't think the "Store Presets with Catalog" was the development team's finest hour, as it's implementation seems muddled and inconsistent. • Issue with 'Get Info'

I have just transferred all of my music including my itunes folder over to an external hardrive.
I can add it, play it and sync it all without any problems, but when i tried to access the info on every track it comes up shaded, exactly like it doees when the track's location can't be found, even though it works perfectly.
I have tried almost everything that i can think of and am now at a complete loss..is this because i have moved everything?

I have a similar issue. I have a brand-new ipod. I'm running the current version of iTunes on a laptop running XP. I'm able to change the "get info" song data on SOME tracks, but not others. The most baffling thing to me is that is seems I can change song data ONCE... and then it becomes "greyed out" and off-limits. What gives?
It's a truly infuriating problem. It's really enough to make me consider scrapping iTunes altogether for file management. What's the point if I have no control over my metadata?
My iTunes folder (and sub-folders) show a partially-checked "read only" box in their preferences. I can force this to be "wide open"... but then it goes right back to partial status. (the individual problem music files themselves are all unchecked for "read only"--I verified that they start that way, they stay that way.)
I tried temporarily force-unlocking the album folder as you did, then--when I STILL couldn't change the song data, I copied it within iTunes with "convert to AAC" (which is weird, because it already WAS in AAC, supposedly). I could then edit the "get info" data on the new copy. Upon reopening iTunes, the new copy remains editable, while the old copy remained uneditable. It was, however, delete-able, and I scrapped the track post-haste.
So.. that worked. ...But what a horrible work-around!
It seems to me that iTunes is preventing me from changing downloaded metadata (at least more than once) even though the tracks are all ripped from my CD collection. Is there some reason that changing the "sort artist" or "sort album" items would lock-down all other fields for editing?

  • "Store presets with catalog" doesn't work with web galleries

I reinstalled Windows 7 and copied over my LR4 presets and galleries over to the new install.  I decided to try ""Store presets with catalog" to keep things simpler next time since I do periodic backups of the catalog folder anyway, so in the future all presets are backed up at the same time as the catalog.  I put the presets including a couple web gallery presets in the proper folders.  LR4 recognized all presets except for the web gallery presets--when I went to the Web module it didn't list them as options.  I then copied those web gallery presets to the default LR4 settings folder (C:\User\XYZ\AppData\Etc-so-on-so-forth) at which point it recognized the presets and listed them in the Web module.
So it seems that LR4 doesn't respect the "Store presets with catalog" setting when looking for web gallery presets.  Am I missing something?

    Hi
My program monitor only shows part of a clip during playback, though output to an external monitor is fine. If I stop playback and click in the monitor window, the clip is displayed correctly, but reverts back to partial when playing back.
This started happening today after installing Matrox tools update to 5.1 and latest matrox effect patterns.  Everything else is perfect inc source monitor.
Have tried may settings changes, new projects old projects, new clips etc etc but its the same every time.  Any ideas what has gone wrong? Its been running perfect for last 4 years.  Is it worth reinstalling CS5 and would I have to reinstall Matrox also?

  • Traverse object tree from the middle with reflection

    Hi.
I am new to using reflection in more complex scenarios, and would like some advice.
If I get back a partial object tree, from an ORM layer for example, where I have a series of associated objects, for example Employee, which has a Department attribute, linking it to its parent department, and a collection of child address objects, is it possible to traverse all objects attached to Employee, calling a given method on them, if they extend a certain class?
Could someone show an example of doing this, or describe how it could be done?
    Thanks for your help.

You have an arbritrarily complex hierarchial collection whith a unknown structure.
You wish to apply a method to all references in the tree.
There are only two basic storage mechanisms in java; reference or array.
Setup: Keep a hashtable/dictionary of each visited reference to avoid endless recursion.
Method, called Doit() which takes an Object 'n'
    - If n is null return
    - if n is already in hashtable return
    - Add to hashtable
    - if n is of type base class then call target method (might want to decide about thrown exception.)
    - reflect through n for members which are either Object or array (base type Object)
    - If single member is Object then call Doit
    - If array recurse through each item and call Doit()

  • W540 - Failure due to missing i/o HD light

Word of warning about TuneUp utilities AVG Zen.
Yesterday I got the offer to upgrade my license to the new PC-Tune from AVG.  Failed on the W540 with error @AVGMSI_Error1729 [0xC00706C1].
Advised to run repair file AVG_BFEfix.exe
Program says "WORK IN PROGRESS - Please be patient..." OK, it's been running for 25+ minutes. Program only has a flashing square box, no metering, or other status information.
On my other systems, AVG Zen works, but it's sole purpose seems to be to sell you other programs and license administration.  Many of these programs are vertical in nature, and claim YOUR machine as THEIRS.
So... the question is:  Is the W540 working? Cleaning something?  Is the computer locked? All this cloud business is a failure for people who work.  Adobe ruined my install of PS CC and most Cloud tech support want to log into your machine remotely.
Think carefully.  Why did Lenovo follow MS's directive and removed the HD light or WiFi light??

Using 'DriveGleam v1.12'.  Seems to work OK when there is a screen to look at (e.g. fully booted), but on boot and shut down, or MS updates, I still have no idea what gives. I have yet to get the right colors in DriveGleam.
I did get a Rikiki drive as my external backup and a USB 3.0 Lexar NOT SANDISK USB key!, as my external boot drive for True Image.  The restores are great, no issues after 20+ restores.  Maybe a USB 3.0 256gig is in the offing. No Rikiki then. The restores are relatively quick. Would be quiker with an external SSD/USB3 or to the 2nd SSD in the caddy.
Ummm let me think, added items to use as a workstation:
    1) Mouse or Wacom
    2) USB SD card reader
    3) Rikiki
    4) DVD drive (I have a fixed SSD in the DVD slot, no easy field swap)
    5) USB 3 port extender AND PSU for powered ports.
    6) Inline switch on power brick with neon light
    7) Cables for all the workarounds.
Thank goodness the battery sticks out in the back, this partially protects the power cord from bending. Albeit, my plug is already slightly bent from accidentally lifting from the front.  I'm a klutz.

  • Accidentally burned documents in IDVD. Can they be saved?

In an attempt to backup my files before they were moved from one Macbook to another, I had let my Mac savy sister burn my documents folder to dvd. I'm pretty new to macs, but not to computers in general. However I didn't know how to burn to a dvd. The files are on the dvd, they all vary in content size, but I cannot view them. For example, if I open one of my word documents, all I see are squares in place of words.
Is there any way to salvage these documents? I cannot recreate them, some are old saved writings, and I will do anything to get them back, even partially. Is there a way to reverse burn these files? Any and all help will be deeply appreciated!

    Hello, GoldenZ,
    Welcome to the discussions.
Sorry for your difficulty with your burned documents. Do you know how they were burned? Was it following Mac Help's methods...?
    +*Burning a CD or DVD*+
+The Finder can burn files to a CD or DVD. You can then use that disc as a backup, send it to friends, or copy those files to another machine. Mac OS X burns discs that can also be used on Windows computers and other types of computers. Thie disc uses a HFS Plus/ISO 9660 hybrid format with these file systems: HFS+, ISO-9660 with Rock Ridge, and Joliet with Rock Ridge.+
+If your computer has a Combo drive, you can burn files onto CDs. If your computer has a SuperDrive, you can burn files on CDs and DVDs.+
+After you drag items to the disc, the Finder places aliases to them in the disc's window. When you burn the disc, the original files that the aliases point to are burned to the disc. In addition, if any folder in the burn folder contains aliases, the original files for those aliases are burned to the disc as well.+
+Insert a blank disc into the optical drive of your computer.+
+If you see a dialog, you can choose an action from the pop-up menu and select "Make this action the default" if you want the same thing to happen every time you insert a blank disc.+
+The disc appears on your desktop.+
+Double-click the disc to open it, and drag the files and folders you want on it to its window.+
+The Finder places aliases to the files in the disc's window. The original files are not moved or deleted.+
+Arrange and rename the files exactly as you want them.+
+When burning the disc, the Finder gives the items on the disc the same names and locations as the aliases in the disc window. After the disc is burned, you cannot change them.+
+Choose File > Burn Disc, and follow the instructions.+
+The files that the aliases point to are burned to the disc. In addition, if any folder you copied contains aliases, the original files for those aliases are burned to the disc as well.+
+If the Finder cannot find the original file for an alias, it asks whether to cancel burning or to continue without that item. If you cancel, the disc remains empty.+
+If you eject the disk without burning it, the Finder creates a burn folder with the items you copied to the disc, and places that folder on your desktop.+
+To burn a disc that appears in the sidebar, click the burn icon that appears next to it. You can also hold down the Control key as you click any disc and choose Burn Disc from the shortcut menu.+
+You can also burn discs using applications such as Disk Utility, iTunes, iPhoto, or iDVD.+
What happens if you drag the files off the DVD to your desktop and open it from there?

  • Blank "Installer Alert" while installing CS4

I saw this problem with CS3 users while installing Adobe
programs with Safari 3 Beta but I have the full version of Safari
    3. How can I install it without this alert?

Harbs just pointed me to an excellent blog post that gives me hope there will eventually be light at the end of the Installer tunnel in CS5, btw. Others might take heart from it too. I'm including a quick quote from the start of it to whet your appetite. It definitely deserves wider distribution!
    Adobe Updater Approach
Adobe's updater technology through CS4 is known as the Adobe Update
Manager (AUM.) AUM has a long history of various problems. Our user
community has been vocal about the number and types of problems
experienced through AUM. In the next instance of the Creative Suite, we
intend to provide a different update experience that should address a
number of the most egregious problems discussed thus far. In particular:
Failure of an update to successfully apply to a user's system
Failure to adequately roll back a partial or failed update, thus leaving the user's system in an unusable state
The update process interferes with users trying to get their own work done
When we started out the design for the new Adobe Updater we set a few simple goals:
Make the Adobe Updater install the updates successfully and if the
updater fails, ensure whatever was installed as part of updater is
rolled back and the machine is back to its orginal state.
Make the Adobe Updater non-intrusive. The Adobe Updater should not
interfere with the user's tasks by poping dialogs in middle of your
extremely critical workflows. It will not be an in your face
    application.
Make sure the Adobe Updater when running does not hog your CPU cycles.
Using the Adobe Updater should be a pleasant experience.
Checking for updates is silent and the notification for available updates is clean and unobtrusive.
Provide ways for system administrators to turn-off updates completly.
Secondarily, we also want to enable easier management of updates by
    system administrators.

  • Deadlock while perform JDBC operations?

    Hello,
We are running Weblogic 7.0SP2 with Oracle 9.2.x as the db.
We use Oracle for TOPLink as our orm tool for all db access.
We are encountering strange deadlocks while doing db reads and updates from a
message-driven EJB (MDB) whose onMessage() method has a "Required" transaction
    attribute.
I have attached a partial thread-dump below. It seems that multiple threads (3+)
are waiting to lock the same monitor:
    - waiting to lock <39f68f0> (a oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleConnection)
This is strange as each thread is running in its own transaction, and so it should
be using a unique jdbc connection. btw, we use a Weblogic Connection Pool. The
TOPLink orm tool obtains a connection from the pool by using the DataSource.getConnection()
    method.
My confusion arises from the fact that some threads are locked while performing
read operations and for some reason are waiting to lock the same monitor.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
p.s. i also verified that there are more connections available from the pool,
and idle ExecuteThreads while the deadlock occurs.
Eventually, the transaction times out and gets rolled-back.

  • SOLVED: Blank Installer Alert dialog - CS4 Installer vs Safari 4

According to the Adobe KB, the blank installer alert dialog is a result of having Safari 4 installed. (Seriously?!)
They were of the opinion that it meant you didn't meet minimum system requirements, but that's not the only way to get it. You can also get it for something as piddling as have Safari or Firefox running when you launch the Installer. (OMG! He's running a browser! Stop everything!!!1!)
As such, here's a way to locate the actual error message that should be in the Installer window.
    The Fix
The fix assumes you have already run the CS4 installer and staring at a blank Installer Alert right now. If you're not, do so first.
    Then do the following...
Launch Console, located in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder.
Click the Logs button in the upper left of the window.
In the list of logs on the left, navigate to:/Library/Logs/Adobe/Installers
Locate the current install. It will end in today's date.log.gz. For example:Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium 4.0 07-24-2009.log.gz
Click the log and scroll to the very end, where you will see an ERROR, followed by the reason.
    For example:
    [       0] Fri Jul 24 11:24:37 2009 ERROR
Installation cannot continue until the following applications are closed:
    - Firefox
Please exit these applications and then click Retry to proceed.
Now you can Force Quit the Installer (option-click on the icon in the Dock to see this menu item), rectify the situation, and try, try again...
    Hope this helps others.
PS to any Adobe personell who might drop by: You cannot kill the Installer & Updater soon enough. Give us Apple Install packages like Jobs intended!
I just wasted 5 or 6 hours of my company's time and 12gb of your bandwidth installing a bunch of copies of CS3 because of the wretched Installer/Updater. If I'd had Apple Install packages, I could have downloaded it once and fired the updates to all machines and been done in 20 minutes.

  • SSD disks and swap

I know this has been discussed numbers of times but still I find it confusing. My new PC will have a SSD (and no traditional hard disk). My question is what to do with the swap and especially the swapiness parameter? Is it really a good idea to reduce it? How the default value of 60 has been decided?
What confuse me is that I have seen too many posts that say, roughly, that we need to avoid any write to the SSD in order to spare it; often to the point we can wonder if the SSD will remain useful... I have seen that SSD supports 100000 write cycles; with a 120GB SSD, you will thus need to write 12000 Tera (12 peta) before it fails. It is clear to me that small things (like putting /var outside the SSD somehow) makes no sense. Even the swap makes me dubious: is it really worthwhile to try to spare the SSD, will it not become obsolete well before it dies. Because the SSD is faster, it could actually make sense to swap on it on an optimal way? SSD supports fast reading of nonadjacent data, which seems a big plus for the swap.
Edited: It seems that this page http://ef.gy/statistics:ssd-write-endurance go in my sense. You will need more that six months to wear a SSD if you write to it at the maximum possible rate 24h/24h. If that is true, the SSD will never fail unless you do it on purpose. I have no estimate how much data we write on a hard disk on average but I think it is only a tiny fraction of that...
    # mod edit: please don't rollback edits that make your thread title more relevant to the actual question you are asking. "SSD disk" means fsck all...

I think it is highly dependent on what you are using your machine for, but yes, I too see very little swap use with 8GB RAM. In my experience, hibernation on linux (suspend to disk) is far from perfect, and has always cased me more issues than the functionality was worth.
Recently though, I was able to set up Intel Rapid Start Technology, which is like hibernation controlled by the firmware.  Typically you would use it by setting a timeout in the bios.  So after being suspended for that set period of time, it would power back up partially and write the contents do disk, then "hibernate".  But as of 3.11 Matthew Garrett created a userspace driver for it, so I can set it to only function in the event that my battery gets super low (at what point it decides that I'm not quite sure).
If your machien supports IRST, you should be aware that because it is firmware controlled, you cannot get away with "hibernating" on an Intel Rapid Start Technology partition that is less than the size of your RAM.  It does not compress or try to opitimize the RAM contents for size at all.  Also, it must be used on an SSD, so it is likely going to be taking valuable space on the faster disk.  Interstingly, gehidore has the same machine as me, yet IRST works great for me, yet not at all for him.

  • CS4 standard screen mode

I have recently upgraded from CS3 to CS4 and have a slight problem with standard screen mode.
When I open an image in standard screen mode the image does not fill the screen and the amount of screen the image fills depends on the percentage magnification.
I have to drag the image with the cursor to fill the screen.
When I open a new image the same thing happens, it reverts back to partially filling the screen.
This only occurs in standard screen mode, the other two modes seem to be ok.
    I have a mac pro, os 10.5.5, 8gb ram
    .Any advice would be appreciated.

You might get an answer here. But note that this is the Photoshop *Windows* Forum. There is an Adobe Photoshop Mac forum as well and those folks will probably have more insight into Mac issues.
