Back up question -- space and location

Silly question. I tried to search and find, but what does the ipad actually back up. I assume it doesn't duplicate photos, videos etc -- docs that are already on the mac. What does it back up and how much space does it take up since i can't find the backup file.

Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown asBackups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Reboot and it should go away.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Question about ICloud. Do I have to back-up my iPad and iPhone4 b4 sync with iTunes?

Question about ICloud. Do I have to back-up my iPad and iPhone4 to iCloud b4 sync with iTunes? Last time I synced iphone4 with iTunes, I updated to 5.0.1 when I connected, but it wiped my calendar entries. I had to reset to the last date I had synced (4months ago). So my question is... Now that I have iCloud, should I back up both my iPhone and my iPad before I sync with iTunes?  And will all the data from iPad, iPhone, and computer all merge when the iPad and iPhone are synced?

    It does not matter.

  • If I back up iMovie projects to an external drive does it take the media with it? I want to free up space and remove pictures that were in iPhoto...that were used as media by iMovie when project was under way. In short I want archive iMovie stuff

If I back up iMovie projects to an external drive does imovie  take the media with it? I want to free up space and remove pictures that were in iPhoto...that were used as media by iMovie when project was under way. In short I want archive iMovie stuff. If I pull pics out of iPhoto, and later want to drag an archived projet bac into iMovie and the pics are no longer in iPhoto, will I be able to keep working in the project in iMovie?

Very likely not, as the iPhoto's can be used for something else.
More like it took a copy, or it's referencing that spot on the drive in the editable files and most likely made a copy to create a new permanent export file.
Sample one picture and a iMovie file and see what happens.

    EMERGENCY!!!!!!!!
IS THERE ANY WAY TO RETREIVE AN ACCIDENTALLY DELETED BACK UP FROM MY TIME MACHINE DRIVE????
In other words, I emptied out a folder on my main MAC to make space and the next subsequent backup backed up the EMPTY FOLDER and then deleted the "old backup" that actually contained the contents of the very important folder.
Now only the emptied folder exists on my MAC and in the two backups on my Time machine backup drive.
This was clearly a big mistake on my part not realizing that the "old backup" being deleted by Time Machine would include backed up files that I had no intention of getting rid of....
    What can I do now?
Is DATA RETREIVAL even an option?
I am sure that the Folder of files that I need are on the most recently deleted "OLD BACKUP" but how do I get to this, if even possible?????
    Super desperate situation here...

It may be possible to recover some of the data, if it hasn't been overwritten, but it won't be cheap or easy.
You've posted in the Time Capsule forum, but you mention a "backup drive."  If your backups are on a Time Capsule's internal HD, instead of an external HD, it's even worse.
    See Data Recovery.
    Good luck.

If you were told they would refund the price for the iCloud storage - Contact AppleCare and ask to speak with a senior advisor.  Have the case number for the promised refund available.
If you are trying to update your device, but you don't have sufficient space to download and install the update, you need to delete content from your device.  Buying storage in iCloud does not add space to the device which is what you need.
You can always update using a computer with iTunes installed - this method is faster, and will allow you to make a backup on the local computer (Local backups restore faster than iCloud backups).

  • IPod syncing and backing up question!

I just recently had to re-do my operating system with the recovery disk of my Windows XP laptop and had to wipe out everything and start fresh on the hard drive.
I have everything on my iPod touch that has not been synced or backed up as all of that was gone like I said when I had to re-do my operating system on my Windows XP laptop which brought it back to day 1 and all of the previously synced and backed up data that was stored in iTunes on my laptop was wiped out as well.
I don't want to lose what all I have on my iPod touch because I know that if I try to sync and backup my iPod touch it will think it's another computer and lose and wipe out everything that I have on my iPod touch as this has happened to me before in the past and it was all gone for good at that point.
My question is this, how do I sync and backup my iPod touch on the same laptop that I used in the beginning when my iPod touch was brand new after I synced and backed up for the 1st time so that I won't lose everything on my iPod touch again so that it will recognize the same laptop I used in the beginning in iTunes?

OK, these are good steps to follow for the purchases.
What are the instructions for doing it for my Apps, Contacts, Websites I've saved on the iPod, Photos, Videos, Calendar, Notes, Messages, and Bookmarks so my laptop won't cause the iPod to delete any of these on me like the last time being that it thinks that it's a brand new iPod Touch and doesn't recognize it at all?
Bear in mind still that I had to re-do my operating system for my Windows XP laptop from the recovery disk which brought it all back to day 1 from scratch. When I did this in the past and plugged in my iPod Touch to the laptop, it deleted and wiped out everything from the iPod Touch and had to start over. I don't want this to happen again.

  • How do I get my captivate lesson to back up through branching and Questions?

I have a course of 60 lesson slides with question slides appearing throughout the lesson. It also uses branching. Our legal department wants the user to be able to back up through the entire lesson but I have encountered the following problems:
    - When I use the skin to create a navigation bar the back up buttons won't follow the branched section the user followed but instead simply back up to the previous slide number.
    - When I created my own back up bottons, which can be set to jump to the branched slides, I discovered that I can't add them to the question slides.
    - When I tried a combination of my own buttons for the lesson slides and the back button, that is an option within the question slide properties, I discovered that once the user clicks this back up button on the question slide (and then comes forward to that question slide again) he/she is stuck and can't proceed past the question slide. The slide remembers the previous question response (the radio button selected previously is still black) and not even the skip button will allow the user to advance.
I'm hoping someone else has encountered this type of problem and can help me with a solution. I currently have both captivate 3.0 and 4.0.
Any help at all would be appreciated a lot.
    Kevin Martin

    Here's something to try...
Remove the skin so users must use the buttons you add, which will work with the branching. Add a menu to the project and strategically pick the slides that are included in the drop-down. I'm pretty sure you could have the menu go to quiz slides. I use lesson dividers as the options in the menu so users can go to the beginning of a section.
I will warn you that many folks have experienced quiz slides locking up if the user goes backwards through the module at any time. When they get to any quiz slide, there will be a caption that says "You did not answer the question completely" and the user cannot continue.
To avoid this glitch, I re-created quiz slides from scratch using click boxes and text entry boxes. This gives you a little more control over things, but you can't replicate every type of quiz question CP has.
Hope this helps...I'm no expert, but I've dealt with the same issues. Good luck!

  • I am freeing up some space and am using osx lion, but i have 12gb of back ups, how can i delete these and what are they?

I am freeing up some space and am using osx lion, but i have 12gb of back ups, how can i delete these and what are they?

    Gotcha.
Back-ups are what they are: a safety copy. If you feel you don't need them, you can trash them. They could be of a previous System if you upgraded, or something else. You wont get the full picture from looking at system profiler.
You may want to look into getting an external drive and offloading some stuff to it.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • Comming back, pidgin questions and where the ... is "archie"?

Hey, I'm seriously thinking of comming back. Its been about a year since my last install.
Going to try my hand at a virtual env later and see.
First question would be 3rd party sites for software or those scripted pkg makers.. Are there some sites I should bookmark right now
or is the majority of it kept in forum discussions?
Is the voice and video working in newest pidgin? (gtalk)
And where the HELL did "archie" go? The live arch cd that was in development. I reallly like having a live cd, or usb.
Are there any live arch project being worked on? Can they work on usb? - sites / links / keyboard are wanted
    very curious
    Thanks
    Geo

I did mean makepkg. While it is an easy (and great) way of making a package it isn't really in official packages.
But its good to see it still available. Probably won't need to use it much now, but good its here.
reguarding the live cd.. I haven't yet read through all the docs I need (getting back after a while and getting familiar with arch again)
are there "remastering" guides for the live cd? Because I have a old usb drive I was going to install "damn small" or "slax" but
if I could reduce the size I could add it and just be 100% arch again. (the size is 1gb BUT I need almost half for documents, my resume and some backups)

  • Complicated corrupted main drive and lost Time Machine back-ups question

Here's tough one I can't pin down answers to:  I have an iMac Early 2008 running Lion.  The main hard drive system (probably) corrupted over the course of 2-3 months until it became unusable.  I had Sophos on it, but removed it about a month ago and reliability improved but only for about a week.  Finally the hard drive crashed.  I used the Recovery partition while able to have Disk Utility add a second partition to my back-up drive, which contains Time Machine back-ups, my iPhoto folder and a few other files but no system.  I installed Snow Leopard from disk to the new partition, checked the first partition, which seemed fine, then upgraded the Snow Leopard partition to Lion and updated and ran under a temporary user.  Next I explored the main drive, which Disk Utility said was fine, but doesn't always show up.  While in Disk Utility, I noticed that the first partition on the back-up drive showed up as empty!  After some panicking, I've a second back-up drive on the way, but how do I access the TIme Machine back-ups, get my original user back and get access to over 15 years of files that are locked into that user?
My (2nd) back-up drive arrives tomorrow, so I'll able to get to work soon.
    Thanks for any help.

Ok so wahat you mean is I need to name a partition "Time machine" in order for TM to back up any volumes and TM will always start with the volume titled Timemachine ?
    so as I stated
    A. All my OS applications _________Rename this to time machine or can I ues the volume name it is now?
    B. All my files for those applications  ---------Once that is done TM will back this up?
    C. All My Itunes / Music etc---------Once that is done TM will back this u last?
Also I did a test run and I geet the error msg that the backup disk of my OS needs 1.36 TB but only 1.34 exists. The orignal  OS  disk has only 232GB of data why is tome machine asking for all that space?
I set the partition at 1.34 so there would be way more than enough space to copy.
