Back-up software

Not sure where to post this.
I store no data on my computer boot drive. It's all stored on external FW 250GB ATA drive.
I will use my boot drive as a working drive, I use Adobe Photoshop, and other RAW file processors, but once the job is done, everything moves off that drive to my external FW drive.
I hear about DejaVue and Retrospect. Any comments on how back-up software works and what I need to be concerned with? I plan to back up to another external FW drive, and store it off site for safety. Probably back up that main external storage drive once a week unless I get really really busy.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, John!
Good advice here...
Im a big CCC fan, but having said that, you might look at the paid version of SuperDuper, which easily does backups of changed/added files, comparing the clone to the original volume. This will most probably be a real time saver. I'd encourage you to check out the free version first (which does full clones only); I'm sure that you'll find the GUI and simplicity of the program to be impressive.
I have Retrospect, but it's more complex and I have to admit that I don't have the self-discipline to use it religiously (I felt like I was enslaved to administering to backups...). It does incremental backups and cloning (volume duplication) as well as full backups and is very thorough in its reporting.

  • Hi, can I go back from software version OS X 10.8.1 (12B19) to my old software?

    Hi, can I go back from software version OS X 10.8.1 (12B19) to my old software?

    Which version old software?
    Which exact model computer?
    Did you make a complete clone backup of your old system before upgrading and are you prepared to have things revert to that?
    Usually downgrading operating system requires a complete erase of the computer.  You then clone a previous backup, or completely re-install the operating system and all software plus data files you put somewhere for safekeeping while doing all the other things.  Also some of your data files may have been irrevocably updated to newer versions that will not open on the old system.  Basically, downgrading is not simple unless you prepared for the eventuality in advance.

    I have bought a WD My Book World Edition to use for back-up of my iMac, but when I try and log onto the drive with Apple time Machine (back-up software) or connect in any other way I get the message 'There was a problem connecting to the server "MybookWorld.local" The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Any ideas on how to solve would be gratefully received?

    Followed the directions on this page and it worked!

    Part One - Turn on SSH (in the admin panel)
    [1] Go to to http://mybookworld.local
    [2] login: username will be admin, password will be whatever you have setup. If you can't remember it should be in your Mac OS X keychain (Utilities > Keychain Access, search for "mybookworld"). If you have not changed if from the default the password will be admin as well.
    [3] Switch to advanced mode.
    [4] From the System tab, pick Advanced.
    [5] Enable SSH Access, and click submit.
    [6] Click on the network tab and then the LAN button
    [7] Make a note of the IP address
    Small, maybe obvious, but nevertheless important point: For the install to work, your NAS needs to be connected to a router with internet access.
    Part Two - Install netatalk2.2
    [8] Open Terminal.app (Utilities > Terminal)
    [9] Enter the following command (substitute in 127.0.0.1 for the actual IP address you noted down in step 7), then hit return:
    Code:
    ssh [email protected]
    [10] When prompted, enter the ssh password (will be welc0me).
    [11] You are now going to download the installer. Enter the following command, then hit return:
    Code:
    wget http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/local--files/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight/install_netatalk.sh -O install_netatalk.sh
    [12] Once completed, you will need to run the installer. Type:
    Code:
    sh install_netatalk.sh
    [13] You will be asked a number of question during install, answer yes to all. When asked about the "DHX2 login process", I opted to install the modified version, so I can confirm it works.
    [14] Once the box has restarted, you should be able to connect to your afp shares and continue to use Time Machine.

  • Back-Up Software Question

    I need some help if anyone has an opinion. I just bought a LaCie external drive to back-up my documents, music, pictures, etc.
    It comes with back-up software, but I'm assuming there are better options out there. Does anyone have suggestions for good programs?
    I would prefer something with an easy-to-use interface, something that can scan my hard drive at preset times and archive new files and add them to a file on the desktop for easy backing up (I've read about programs that can do this), and something cheap (or even free).
    Thanks to anyone who can help here. I am going to back up my files this weekend before updating to 10.4.7 (just in case)
    MacBook Pro, 2.0 GHZ, 15" Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Welcome to the Apple forums, revilo.
    Probably the most respected, reliable, and easy to use backup software for Mac OS X (also now Universal for Intel Macs) is SuperDuper. It can make a bootable backup on your external hard drive and can also make incremental updates to that backup. (There are some other options, as well, such as only backing up user files - not the system - and making incremental backups to that.) It's biggest limitation is not making backups to CDs/DVDs, but since you're looking for backups to a hard drive, that doesn't seem to be an issue.
    SuperDuper may not do exactly what you're describing, but I strongly urge you to give it a look. It's reliable, trustworthy, easy to use, and very well supported. You can use it for free and pay the the shareware fee of $28 when you decide it's worth it.
    (No, I have no affiliation. I'm just happy with the product.   :-))

    Hello, when you are having an error on your iPhone and going to the Apple store to get it taken care of, make sure you speak up and provide as much detail as you can. The first iPad Mini I had bought had errors on it, and I didn't speak up and provide further details on my issue.
    Hope your issue gets resolved soon!

  • I have a late 2011 macbook pro and it wont update the firmware to 2.7, it downloads the update then says its installing it but when i go back to software update it keeps coming up saying it needs to be updated

    I have a late 2011 macbook pro running OSX Lion, and it wont update the firmware to 2.7, it downloads the update then says its installing it but when i go back to software update it keeps coming up saying it needs to be updated. Im wondering what can i do to stop this or get it to update.

    Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.

  • MPV: hwdec=vaapi fails and falls back to software decoding

    I've always been confused by setting up hardware decoding - but a couple of recent threads reminded me of this nagging issue and I took another shot at it.  Yet despite all the claims that mpv should support vaapi, it is simply not working here.  I've followed the instructions here yet mpv falls back to software decoding every time.  I've been searching for related issues, but I can't seem to find any reports from intel graphics users.
    The output from mpv:
    $ mpv --vo=opengl --hwdec=vaapi video.mpg
    Playing: video.mpg
    [stream] Video (+) --vid=1 (mpeg1video)
    [vo/opengl/x11] X11 error: GLXBadFBConfig
    [vo/opengl] Could not create GL3 context. Retrying with legacy context.
    Using software decoding.
    VO: [opengl] 720x480 => 853x480 yuv420p
    V: 00:00:00 / 00:00:32 (2%) Dropped: 1
    Exiting... (Quit)
    Mpv's man page suggests that vo=vaapi should only be used for old hardware, though it doesn't specify how old.  I gave that a try too.  That avoids the GLX error, yet still falls back to software decoding:
    $ mpv --vo=vaapi --hwdec=vaapi video.mpg
    Playing: video.mpg
    [stream] Video (+) --vid=1 (mpeg1video)
    libva info: VA-API version 0.37.0

    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42] (rev 07) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
    I have all the drivers/packages listed on the intel graphics wiki page.
    I must be missing something obvious here - the guides seem to suggest this should 'just work' yet mpv keeps falling back to software decoding.

    I was hoping you'd chime in on this one Gusar. Thanks to both of your for the suggestions.  So far no joy, though.  I installed libva-intel-driver-g45-h264 and tried again and received identical output as in my initial post.  I also tried xf86-video-intel-git which also gave no change.
    To be clear, the video plays just fine, but it just relies on software decoding.
    The output from vainfo from after the updates:
    $ vainfo
    libva info: VA-API version 0.37.0
    libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
    libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so
    libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_0_37
    libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0
    vainfo: VA-API version: 0.37 (libva 1.5.0)
    vainfo: Driver version: Intel i965 driver for Intel(R) GM45 Express Chipset - 1.5.0
    vainfo: Supported profile and entrypoints
    VAProfileMPEG2Simple : VAEntrypointVLD
    VAProfileMPEG2Main : VAEntrypointVLD
    VAProfileH264ConstrainedBaseline: VAEntrypointVLD
    VAProfileH264Main : VAEntrypointVLD
    VAProfileH264High : VAEntrypointVLD
    edit: for reference/comparison I removed the new packages and got the "pre" vainfo (then reinstalled the aur packages again):
    $ vainfo
    libva info: VA-API version 0.37.0
    libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
    libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so
    libva info: va_openDriver() returns -1
    vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit
    As I'm pretty ignorant about video drivers, I'm curious if there are some video files that just would not be able to be hardware-decoded?  I've tried a small number of different videos and am getting the same results with all of them, but if there are video-file constraints, are there any sample/testing videos around I should use for debugging?

    I just update my flash player and air sdk to 3.6. My game is being developing using starling. And after update was complete, weired things happened. First,it would always fall back to software mode when debugging with content debugger. I just couldn't get to the gpu mode with content debugger! Second, when I run my game with IE 10 with flash player 11.6, some transparent black skins becomes transparent white skins!!!! That drives me crazy!  Surely there are lots of bugs with the release of flash player 11.6 for windows 8!

  • I have 2 macs and 2 PC laptops in my home wireless network.  Can I use the Airport/Time Capsule hard drive to back up all 4 machines?  I know that I will have to use different back up software on the PCs, but is it possible over the wireless network?

    I have 2 macs and 2 PC (Windows 7) laptops in my home wireless network. (The iMac is hardwired via ethernet to the Airport/Time Capsule; the others are wireless connections using Airport).  I want to use the hard disk drive in the Time Capsule as a network backup drive for all 4 computers.  Is this possible?  Could someone help me by telling me how to configure it?  I know I will have to use different backup software in the 2 Windows 7 Laptops?  Do I need to use the Windows backup software, or can I use a third party program like Acronis True Image?  Thanks in advance for the help

    It is your fault, pondini.. all your fault.
    I read of all the things that go wrong restoring Time Machine backups.. particularly stupid things like mail, photo libraries don't go back.. etc. And looking through the incredible number of issues people have here, when their Mac finally takes a dive how hard it is to restore.
    I restored a test hard disk from a TC.. and it takes ages and ages to even make up its mind to start.
    I worked in computer support for ages, but not Macs.. so my experience is ghost.. ghost images.. on large commercial server setups, can stream restore to multiple computers at once.. even doing it computer by computer the image is simple as network boot to restore. But ghost went the way of Symantec.. sigh!! And was destroyed.
    A product like clonezilla, Free linux boot cd.
    http://lifehacker.com/5078397/clonezilla-backs-up-and-restores-your-disks
    Can backup a Hard disk in just about any format.. yet to try it on a Mac to a TC.. but I will. Boot from CD.. instead of your lost Lion partition which no longer exists (because the hard drive had to be replaced) and the DVD they no longer give you, and restore the entire hard disk in a couple of hours .. to the exact image at the point you made the clone.. in any format, with any partitions.
    My bet is that it will kill TM .. but you could be right.
    It is just the prospect of all those permission changes, photos and mail libraries etc that worry me.

  • How do I restore from external drive, with outdated back-up  software?

    I mistakenly kept using my LaCie external drive's Silver keeper softerware after upgrading my Mac OS. My SilverKeeper version is 1.1.2, which I now know is incompatible with my Mac 10.4.6. (Maybe that is why I got an error report when I
    ran the Mac diagnostic disk on the LaCie.) In any event, after suffering a major crash (Kernal attack, and resulting reformat of the hard drive), I am wondering how to attempt a restore from the LaCie. Should I try it with the software that actually created the LaCie back up that I have; or should I reinstall the appropriate version of SilverKeeper first?
    I have been plugging along with some CD back-ups of the LaCie, but this is quite frustrating since it has to be done manually. Is it possible to download an upgrade to the back-up disk directly? And if so, would this really help matters?
    As you can see, I'm really a bit of an idiot about these matters; so any ANY help will be most appreciated.

    My own opinion is that you should install the later appropriate version of Silverkeeper. That said, I would in fact recommend if you can wait a few days for an answer, that you email the La Cie Silverkeeper backup team via the email link on the site at http://www.lacie.com/silverkeeper/
    They are careful to say they are not officially providing a backup service, but when I emailed them with a query regarding usage about a year ago after downloading Silverkeeper for myself, I got a reply within a couple of days that cleared up my question.

  • Audio back-up software... Is Time machine an option?

    Here's what's up...
    I'm currently installing and re-authorizing everything under the sun, on my new 8 core mac.
    One bit of software that I really made a lot of use of was LaCie's Silver keeper. It allowed me to keep a "list" of the 20 songs I was currently working on. You first designated a back-up location, and then proceeded to back up the song folder.
    Then, from that point on, you simply selected the song title from the list, and hit "Go", and any changes made since that initial back-up were backed up as well. It went REALLy fast, because only the changes made from the last back-up were updated, so no redundant data was copied again.
    I much prefer this method than backing up an entire drive, even if only recent changes are reflected. It still takes more time than I may have between songs, with clients in the studio.
    All that to say, Silver Keeper is not Leopard compatible, and I certainly can't wait for it to be.
    Does Time Machine allow you to designate specific folders within a hard drive? And can it access multiple hard drives, say, one for a complete system back-up, and another for daily or hourly audio back-ups?
    Or is something like Retrospect a better choice for how I prefer to back-up my song files?
    Just looking at new options...

    I have SilverKeeper v1.1.4 and it works fine on 10.5.4.
    I have a 160MB internal HD in my laptop.
    I have a 500MB Lacie external FW drive which I have partitioned into music and internal HD backup.
    On the Lacie Music partition I keep my Logic Projects
    On the internal HD I keep all my programs/Loops/SW instruments
    I have a 60MB external FW drive which I use to backup my Lacie external Music partition using SilverKeeper
    I use Time Machine to backup my HD internal drive to the Lacie
    Time Machine seems pretty "brute force" from what I can tell. Unlike SilverKeeper I can't find the sort of flexible options that SilverKeeper provides. But you should have no problem continuing to use SilverKeeper.
    Good Luck

  • How to go back in software versions?

    Can anyone detail a procedure for loading older versions on software? I have loaded the latest version for a 2710en and would love to go back to V6.13 which had better map routing and included map items such as round abouts that are not evident after the software update to V6.22.
