Back up storage on MBP 15" mountain Lion

Hi there,
Question regarding back up storage.
I back up my MBP to an external drive with time machine.....but looking at the System Information>storage it shows there is 208 Gigs of storage.
Is this redundant? Or required for back-ups locally?
Cheers,
Jay

I believe TM creates local snapshots, which is what you're seeing.

  • Installing FCS 3 (upgrade) on new MBP with Mountain Lion

    Hi:
I just bought a new MBP with Mountain Lion installed.  I have FCS3 upgrade, which I have now on my Mac Pro tower.  I originally bought FCP version 1 back in 2000, so I've had it for quite some time.
When I insert the FCS install DVD into the MBP, the disc spins up and then spins down.... and nothing happens.  Nothing opens, no dialogue box, not sign of any activity.
    What am I missing here?

Open the finder window and click on the DVD to open it up. Make sure you have the first DVD disk...
I have FCS 3 (FCP 7) running in ML with no problems. I did a clean install of ML first... and installed the FCS 3 upgrade after that... But, make sure you install QuickTime 7 before you install FCS 3... FCS 3 with turn QuickTime 7 into the Pro version.

I installed LiveType from FCS 2 too...

  • I have a MBP running Mountain Lion. Tried to install Mavericks, but it keeps telling me that my disc is used as time machine backup, and cannot install Mavericks, any help appreciated

I have a 2011 MBP running Mountain Lion. Tried to install Mavericks, but it keeps telling me " cannot install Mavericks because disc is used for Time Machine backup". I tried disabling TM by issuing the command in console " sudo tmutil disable local". Still no luck. Is there a way of erasing all the time machine backups from my system disc?
    Thanks.

Thanks Matt. I tried erasing the "Backups.backupdb" folder. It does not allow me to do that, inspite of "sudo"-ing. I ended up installing Mavericks on another disc, and use disc migration assistant to transfer my data, before swapping out the old disc from the MBP.

If you're running Mac OS X 10.8.x ou can purchase iPhoto version 9.x from the App Store. If you purchase iPhoto at the App Store you will automatically get the most up-to-date version and you won't need to install the 9.4 update.

  • Restoring MBP to Mountain Lion

I just got a second-hand MBP late 2012 model the other day, the seller told me to erase the HD content and restore it to the stock Mountain Lion it came with. I followed a lot of guides in the Apple community. I did a lot of researching & the steps boiled down to these, which what I did:
    1. Press cmd+R upon set-up.
    2. It took me to Internet Recovery, with the spinning globe and a bar with remaining download time. (Guides say that after cmd+R, it should prompt me with the Mac OS X Utility window)
    3. After it has finished downloading, the utility window showed up. I chose Disk Utility, have the first HD on the left side pane, clicked on erase. After so, I returned to the main menu with all the options to reinstall, etc.
    4. I then chose Reinstall Mac OS X. It started to download the content, which made me confused. I thought later models have a back up of the OSX? My download time was about 22hrs, and I wasnt able to finish.
I tried resuming the process, but when it hit cmd+R, it's downloading all over again. Sets me back to step 2. Did I missed out an important step?
    Please help me. Thank you.

In order to restore it to the original OS version it came with - if that was Mountain Lion - you would need to invoke internet recovery which is Command + Option + R during restart/startup. That will take you to Apple's servers and should reinstall the original OS. That would be the way the seller should have done it before selling the machine in order to comply with the licensing agreement (if the machine came with Mountain Lion).
Command + R will take you to the regular recovery which will not work as you would be required to input the (seller's) Apple ID to reinstall the current OS version.
Try the internet recovery - you have already wiped the drive, right? If not, do that before hitting the install button.

  • Used MBP with mountain lion

    hi there,
and please excuse my questions as I'm new to Mac.
I bought a  used MBP late 2011, with mountain lion on it. however when I go to app store, it shows mountain lion for 19USD. why is that. and if I reset my mac will it go back to the previous lion OSX??

The link below, that part under the name Kappy, explains what the previous owner should have done before he sold you the machine.
Take a look through and you will probably be able to work out what to do next.   It all depends on how close these rules have been followed.

  • What files should I transfer back to a clean install of mountain lion?

    Hi,
I have a 2.4 GHz core 2 duo running snow leopard. I want to upgrade to mountain lion but want to start with a clean install. i have everything backed up on an external hard drive. My questions are this: what files should I transfer over from 10.6.8 while leaving the old junk behind. I will reinstall only the compatible apps later.
My second question should I use migration assistant or set-up assistant? I can't seem to find the necessary tutorial that is straight forward for this.
    Any help would be appreciated.

If you're doing a clean install, which usually isn't necessary, then you want to bring over as little as possible. You can use Migration Manager in Setup Assistant to bring over your Accounts if there are no problems there. (If there are it probably accounts for the issues you're having and you'll need to troubleshoot your Home folder.)
You'll probably want to leave settings behind. Applications you already said you would install later.
The reason to run Migration Manager on the Setup Assistant is becuase after that it tends to create a second Home folder, which is not helpful.
Be sure you have a good backup before you begin.

  • Downgrade late 2013 mbp to mountain lion

    Hi,
Im looking at buying a macbook pro late 2013 model, with OS Mavericks installed. But I would like to wipe it off and install mountain lion.
    Would this be possible?
I have a mbp at the moment with mountain lion 10.8.5 - would i be able to use that somehow?
I'd prefer to do a fresh install os mountain lion if possible.
Any help would be really appreciated,
    Thanks

Before you wipe out Mavericks on the new MBP, you want to check if the older OS will support the new hardware and firmware of the Retina MBP. One method is to use Target Disk Mode between the old MBP and the new one and see if it works correctly.
If you need to run 10.8.5, you can also consider virtualization solutions (like Vmware) to run a ML VM. You want to make sure you buy a MBP with enough memory so it can support the VM and the underlying OS, both, otherwise you will end up with beach balls of death.

  • Kernel Panic everytime MBP with Mountain Lion shuts down

    Hello,
My MBP (MBP 7,1, 2.4gHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR3 Ram, 500GB hard drive with Mountain Lion 10.8.2) recently started having kernel panics every time I shut down. It reboot twice and then show the "please report this to Apple" dialogue box followed by the "kernel dump" dialogue box. Is there anyway I can fix this?
    Thanks,

    Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • MBP with Mountain Lion stuck on Screen Saver!

Opened MBP to find computer "stuck" on "Word of the Day" screen saver - had to re-boot.  Any other reports?
At first, I thought this was a virus as I've never seen "Word of the Day" screen saver!  I appears that Mountain Lion has a "random" setting for selection of screen savers.
Also, it was odd that a supposedly sleeping computer would have a screen saver on when opened.  I've had Moutain Lion for months and have never seen this before.

  • Would you advise me to upgrade my mbp to mountain lion?

does anyone advice me to upgrade my macbook pro 15 inches 2.3 GHZ to mountain lion?
is it true that reduce the 50% of the battery?
i dont like the new "200 features", i dont care about the twitter, facebook features...
i dont have an iphon or an ipad so i dont care about icloud...
    doesnt sounds interesting to me
by the way, some people are saying that the new upgrade 10.8.1 doesnt fix the battery issue
if you check http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1571 it doesnt say that its already fixed
soo, do you advice me to upgrade?

I won't say I have had a battery capacity increase per se, but I haven't suffered any loss.
I will also say that if it weren't for the iCloud integration (and maybe Notification Center), I'd still be on Snow Leopard. Use what you like

Yes it is, but keep in mind there may be applicable taxes and or fees added to the $19.99 purchase price. You need to have enough funds available to cover that.
