Back-up suggestions in mixed Mac Prol / G5 environment

I've in the process of setting up a new Mac Pro to use along with a couple of G5s. I've been using SuperDuper to auto back up everything on a cloned 2nd drive in each tower. With the addition of the Mac Pro, I plan to update the G5s to Leopard and incorporate Time Machine into my back-up scheme, along with SuperDuper. I believe the bootable drive written by the Intel powered Mac Pro would not be usable by my G5s, which would limit its usefulness if that tower had a power supply or motherboard problem. I have yet study up on Time Machine back ups; would they be useable to restore a system across the mix of computers? Any suggestions or insights appreciated.

Leopard is a universal OS. So that makes life simpler.
Time Machine keeps each drive in its own sub-folders. I use more than one volume for TM in case one of them has a problem, so call them "daily" and one that I make sure to update weekly. Some had to redo their TM drive after 10.5.2.
Bombich has a page (author of CCC) on using ARD.
If you have everyone on a common OS volume, and keep personal files on a data drive, even easier. Rather than use one drive for OS/apps and data, use 2nd drive for data improves performance, and eSATA or FW for backups.
I always have external backups, and one is always off line in case there is a a problem I still have a good backup drive.

  • Time Capsule as a NAS in a mixed (Mac/PC) network

Hi, I'm looking for a good NAS solution for a network of 3 PCs (WinXP Pro and Home) and 4 Macs (all 10.4.11) and thought that the Time Capsule might offer a good opportunity. I want to make it easy for everyone to back up often, and a decent NAS is much cheaper than buying a bunch of external drives for 5 people.
I have a router (not gigabit, with 802.11g), and am thinking that I should just connect the TC to the router via Cat5e to simplify things.
Has anyone been through this experience? How does the TC work in a PC system? Can I just assign a drive to it and off I go? Has it been reliable?
    Thanks!
    Keith.

I have a TC in a mixed Mac/PC network and it's working wonderfully. Just a few things to keep in mind:
Make sure to set the Workgroup in your File Sharing section of AirPort Utility. Be sure to type the same workgroup that your PCs are members of and you should be able to see the Time Capsule's disk drive as a networked drive. You might have to add your Time Capsule's network to the list of trusted zones/networks in your PC's software firewall settings. If that doesn't work, you could always install AirPort Utility for Windows from the TC install disc which will have AirPort Base Station Agent. This is a program that loads into the taskbar and allows you to connect to your Time Capsule's disk drive.
The other thing to remember, if you are connecting one router to another, set the second router to run in bridge mode and give them both a unique SSID. This allows the first router to do all the DHCP and NAT, and will just add a secondary wireless access point to your current network. I have my TC acting as my main router with a Linksys running in bridge mode. My TC is wireless-n only 5 GHz, and the Linksys is b/g 2.4 GHz, giving me a full speed N network while still allowing b/g devices to connect.
Edit: You could also disable wireless routing on the Time Capsule entirely and just have it act as a networked drive. Set the Time Capsule's Connection Sharing to Off (Bridge Mode) in AirPort Utility and disable Wireless Mode. AFAIK this should still allow the Time Capsule's HDD to be accessed from whichever network it is connected.
Try reading this pdf from Apple. It explains networking in a lot greater detail.

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

How do I move a backed up app from my Mac to my iPad?

Connect the phone to your computer and select it on the left-hand sidebar of your computer's iTunes (on iTunes 11 on a PC you can enable the sidebar via control-S), and then on the right-hand side of iTunes select the Books tab and you should then be able to select and sync the audiobook to your phone - when you have audiobooks on your phone you should get an Audiobooks section in the Music app

As john noted, eventually that external is probably not going to be big enough, but it certainly is for now. The HD just needs enough capacity to cover the amount of data on your internal HD, not the internal HD's total capacity.
Format/partition the external as follows and you should be set to go:
    1. Connect the external HD to the MBP.
    2. Open Disk Utility on the MBP.
    3. Select the external HD in the left pane.
    4. Click on the Erase tab.
    5. Choose the Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
NOTE: if you want to zero the HD (which I always think is a good idea, but does take time), click on Security Options, click the button for Zero Out Data, click OK. The larger the HD, the longer this will take, in some cases several hours.
    6. Click on Erase and wait for the entire process to finish.
    7. Click the Partition tab.
    8. Click on Volume Scheme: and choose the number of partitions (just one in this situation).
    9. Click on the Options button (located underneath the Volume Scheme pane) and select GUID.
    10. Click Apply.
    11. Quit Disk Utility.
Backup your internal to the external. What application are you using to backup with? I highly recommend both SuperDuper! and CarbonCopyCloner.

I gave you the link to the Boot Camp documentation, read it carefully, mistakes in BC can have serious consequences.
If you have not yet backed up your Mac, DO IT NOW.

The 150:30 error means licensing broke.
Two ways to fix this: If you are used to the Terminal app, you download the license recovery package and following instructions carefully, you use the python script in the package.  Error "Licensing has stopped working"  | Mac OS
If for some reason it doesn't, reinstall CS4 from your discs, or download the CS4 installer here.

It does seem rather odd that an app that was acquired thru itunes would quit working once it was incorporated into the device for all users. oh well it was probably free or $.99 when I downloaded it.
I would think that they were just testing it to see how many people would use it.  But you might want to write a polite letter to Apple requesting a credit for the purchase price of the no longer supported app.  That seems to be the least they could for one of their 'alpha testers'.

Depending on the age of your machine and the version of iPhoto, you may be able to download it from the App Store - but you'll need her account details to do so.
Other than that you'll need to purchase it on the App Store.

I just got ICloud. ALl I want to do is back up files from the mac. How do i do this?
    thank you

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
iCloud can't back up Macs, only iPhones, iPads and iPods touch. Mac backups are too big for iCloud.
As you can't use iCloud, start looking for other services like CrashPlan, but if you are planning on making backups only in one site, I recommend you to get an external drive and use Time Machine to make backups. With this way, you won't need an Internet connection if your files get damaged and you will be able to restore them quickly

My macbook retina was stolen at my school. I was wondering because I used time machine having mountain lion, does it affect anything when if i purchase a mavericks macbook pro? the just announced one. I have all my pictures (iphoto) in that last back up. Can i use a mountain lion time machine back up on new mavericks macs?  My macbook retina was stolen on August 16? So I don't know if there was an update on my mac that might affect it in any way...

It's ok you can use your ML TM to transfer your account.   iPhoto library and other things will be upgraded when you open the apps.
At the end of the Apple article it says:
Migrating a Time Machine backup to a new Mac
When you get a new Mac, you can transfer all of your applications, files, settings, and other information from a Time Machine backup you've already made. When you start up your new Mac for the first time, the Setup Assistant asks you if you would like to restore from backup. If you've already set up your new Mac, you can use theMigration Assistant (located in Applications/Utilities) to do the same thing.
After Migration Assistant completes the transfer and you select your existing Time Machine backup drive, you will be prompted with "Inherit Backup History". Once selected you will be able to continue to use your existing Time Machine backup on your new Mac.
