Back up - trying to install Iomega eGo portable hard drive

I am trying to upgrade from Panther to Leopard. I bought an Iomega eGo portable hard drive to back up my files before I do the upgrade. I followed the instructions to reformat the Mac drive but when I am in the Disk Utility - Erase - the "Volume Format" does not highlight so I can't do anything. Any suggestions? Iomega support is closed on Sundays and I really wanted to get this done today! Thanks for your help.

what files do I backup?
Most users backup their entire hard drive contents - system, applications & files. As a minimum, backup your important files.
Can I just drag and drop the Mac HD to the Iomega backup hard drive? and the applications and my personal file?
You can't drag the Mac HD to the backup hard drive to copy everything. Generally, you can drag files & most applications, however, there are many invisible files associated with the System that would not get copied. You need to use one of the cloning apps below.
Depending on how many GBs of data needs to get copied to the external hard drive, it will take multiple hours to copy everything. I do mine over night. Be sure to turn of the Energy Saver. Depending on which cloning app you use, after the first clone you can then just update the things that have changed. Most of us use SuperDuper (shareware) or CarbonCopyCloner (donationware).
Whenever you upgrade your OS, like going from Panther 10.3 to Tiger 10.4, you will not lose anyhing if you use the Archive & Install feature & select preserve user settings.

How does the Iomega eGo portable hard disk drive connect to the ThinkPad T61?
If you plug this portable hard disk drive in before you turn the ThinkPad on, does the problem still occur or does Microsoft Windows XP boot as normal?

Has someone found a solution which is not replacing the hard drive which works just fine? Or Is anyone aware of a procedure that can force the installation despite the S.M.A.R.T error? Below details of my hard drive

If you haven't done so, run Disk Utility  /Applications/Utilities

The drive may be ok at the moment, but that's not to say the drive may fail at anytime.
Hopefully you have all your important data backed up just in case.

  • Trying to install/format an INTERNAL hard drive using Disk Utility gives me "Error: -69760: Unable to write to the last block of the device".   Is that a hardware problem and what could be done about it?

*** PLEASE NOTE*** - This is a query about an INTERNAL HDD not an external one. Thanks.
My Mac is a late 2009 model and the current hard drive recently failed. So I bought a new one, exactly the same, albeit 750gb instead of 500gb. The HDD is a Seagate Momentus 7200. Before the my current drive failed I made a time machine back up to an external USB HDD. I've inserted the HDD into the bottom of my Mac, plugged in the USB and started my machine pressing the 'Option' ([ALT]) key. I go into Disk Utility to try and format the new HDD by creating a new partition but I keep getting the messages,
"Error: -69760: Unable to write to the last block of the device"
    or
    "POSIX: could not allocate memory"
This is actaully the third HDD I've tried. The first was another Seagate Momentus 7200 500gb, but this time it was a newer model (model number ended in 423AS instead of 420AS - the new one I am trying ends with 420AS, which is the same as the current HDD). I then tried a Western Digital drive but that one didn't even show up in DU. Forums and tech support are suggesting it's faults with the HDDs but surely not three in a row?
Could this be an issue with another part of my Mac?
Is there anything else I can do to format the HDD, have I missed a crucial step?

Did you ever get a resolution to this issue?
I am having that exact error with a new 512GB SSD from Crucial, in a 15" MBP mid-2010.
I really wonder now if the stupid SATA cable could be bad - causing the initial SSD fail.  I am replacing it with the EXACT same drive, and getting that "last block" error when i partition in the GUI or from command-line.
    thanks!

  • Help with Iomega 500g portable hard drive

    Hi
I'm not sure I've posted this in the correct place, but...
I recently reached the capacity on my hard drive. I deleted some stuff but instead of just reducing the content, it's reduced the capacity of the hard drive as well, so I am still unable to add more content (including the stuff that I removed in the first place).
Any suggestions? I removed some files that are part of a final cut project - which I intended to put back on once I'd finished moving stuff about, but since I can't put it back on, all the media is now offline when I open the project.
    Thanks

I'm not sure I've posted this in the correct place, but...
Indeed, the confusing and inconsistent labeling of the forum areas have claimed another victim. If you are running 10.5.X then your iMac is newer than those in this forum.
Do "About this Mac..." from the Apple menu. If it says you have a G5 processor, the forums for those is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=134
If is says yours is an Intel processor, the forum is here:

    It's not your fault.

  • Trying to install Leopard and my hard drive doesnt show as an option.

Here is my problem, I bought my Mac Mini, to use as a server. It been good, but because of my in experience with server, I occasionally have to just reinstall server, because I have changed so my things that it doesn't work. Im learning and really have nothing that really relys on the server, so I can afford to play around. Then I had a power outage at home and my power strip blows its fuse. When I try to do a disk repair I get a system file error disk can not be repaired. After doing some research on this forum, many have just reformatted and reinstalled. I reformatted, but when I go to reinstall, my hard drive is not found. Any ideas?? Thanks

Hi, On your mac mini original install disk there is a hardware test program. Refer to the manual that came with your mini on how to boot up the hardware test. On my mini it is start the computer and hold down the "d" key withe tiger install DVD in the drive.. Make sure that no firewire, ethernet or usb device is attached or it won't boot properly. You can have only a keyboard, mouse and the monitor cable attached.
There is a free CD product called Parted Magic that you can download and use that will boot the mac mini while holding down the "c" key. You can then try to access the HD, only before you have installed the Mac OS X. Then you can try to format it in Ext 3 to test it out and see if everything is ok, BTW never mount a Mac formatted partition in Linux. Parted Magic includes networking for wired or wireless and has a web browser for researching information on the Internet and even has a IRC chat program so you can ask for help in your favorite ##mac channel on irc.freenode.net http://partedmagic.com/
There is a $99 dollar disk utility for mac that can analyze and repair HD for you that runs from a DVD or Mac OS X. http://www.prosoftengineering.com/products/

  • Disk utility and reformatting for an external portable hard drive

I bought a brand-new iomega ego portable hard drive (USB compatible). When attempting to format it, I went to 'disk utility' to erase the drive. The drive appears, with the following information listed: Mount Point : /Volumes/Iomega HDD Capacity : 465.8 GB (500,105,217,024 Bytes)
Format : Winows NT Filesystem Available : 465.7 GB (500,022,378,496 Bytes)
Permissions Enabled : Yes Used : 79.0 MB (82,838,016 Bytes)
Number of Folders : 0 Number of Files : 32
Obviously, it needs to be reformatted. But when I click the erase tab, it will not allow me to pick the volume format or name (it just has it listed but unselectable).
Any suggestions on using disk utility or reformatting the drive so I can use it will be useful!

The drive has been pre-formatted for NTFS. You need to do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to APM then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Trouble Transferring to a Portable Hard Drive and Backing up.

    Hi there.
Recently I have come across a small snag when trying to back up my work folder to a portable hard drive. When I drag it across to the drive (Formatted FAT32 if that helps) it begins to transfer and creates the folder before giving me this message 'The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Creative Work” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)'
So I decided to try and repair the permissions on Macintosh HD with Disk Utility. Which gave me this message repeatedly after several tries.
    Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired "usr/share/derby".
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I also tried to repair my permissions with Onyx which game me the same message as Disk Utility. The strange thing about this problem is I cant seem to find anything wrong with any of the files it simply wont let me back them up...
I was able to burn two back ups of the folder with Toast Titanium. Although there seems to be some discrepancies with the file size on the burnt DVD and that on Macintosh HD. Being that the burnt folder is about 0.3 of a gig smaller. I have looked through all the folders and files and cant find anything missing. Though there is a lot in there and I may run into something down the line.
I would really like to be able to get past this problem without having to re-install OS X because I am still not sure whether I have a complete back up of my files on disk.
If anyone could offer me some suggestions I would be greatly appreciative.
    Thank You.
(I hope my description wasn't too confusing)

    Hi Piccolo32,
There's probably 1 or more files in the folder that are causing the issue. Depending on how many files your dealing with, you could consider dragging and dropping the files 1 by 1, to precisely track down the culprit(s).
*(error -36)* Please see the following posting and let us know if it's the exact same issue your having: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1771300&tstart=3285
*(SUID Error)* Please see this much longer discussion posting, which offers various solutions: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1204263
After reading threw the above posting, it appears, according to apple, the message your seeing can 'safely be ignored'. This is concerning the SUID file.
You appear to be having 2 issues. I was unable to find a solution for the error -36 issue. My suggestion about trying to narrow down which file(s) might be causing the issue is still worth trying, as long as you don't have 100s or 1000s of files to sift threw.
    MacLovin
*Remember FAT32 has a file size limitation of 4GB (-1 byte). The previous posting is good advice, regarding formatting the drive to a native apple format.

  • Running Illustrator CS3 on Portable Hard Drive

I would like to run Illustrator CS3 (Windows) on a portable hard drive that can connect to different machines (so that I can work from home, go to friend's computer, etc). I've been able to do this with InDesign CS2 but it gives me an error message when I try it with Illustrator.
How can I get all of Illustrator to install on my portable hard drive?

Real-world example of what I mean by Adobe continually PUNISHING its most loyal repeat customers with its INFURIATING installation/registration/activation NONSENSE:
    1. Last weekend, on this machine, I started seeing errors about AdobeFntLst. The errors instructed me to run chkDsk. I finished my work and shut down the machine.
    2. At the next restart, Windows automatically launched chkDsk. I let it run its course. It automatically restarted the machine.
    3. Blue screen. Could not get the computer to run, no matter what.
    4. Formatted the C drive. Reinstalled Windows. Installed all Windows updates. Now have a clean and crisp running fresh install of Windows XP Professional.
    5. Deep breath. Ready to install the hideous CS3 Master Collection.
    This is a
very time-consuming install, so I have put it off until today (Saturday morning).
Insert the first DVD. Installer launches. Click install. Agree the license. Get the serial number screen.
Can't type the serial number. Think my keyboard is broken. But it works fine in other apps.
No explanation of this stupid behavior whatsoever is offered by the stupid installer, but I know what's going on: The stupid installer is looking for a copy of a CS app, because the Master Collection was bought as an upgrade from CS2 Premium--which was bought as an upgrade from CS Premium.
So I won't be able to install CS2 Premium either. I'll have to install CS Premium. Then CS2 Premium. Then the stupid CS3 Master Collection installer will let me type a serial number.
Or, I could (assumedly) install the CS3 Master Collection as a demo, hoping I can activate it after. But that disallows installation of some of the content on the disks. Do I want to do the version shuffle, and risk all the dangers of all the associated installers? Or do I want to install the CS3 Master Collection as a trial, hoping that I can then register and activate it, and then weed through the disks trying to find all the content that was disallowed?
How much of my money has Adobe acquired since I've been using its apps (dating back to Photoshop 1)?
Does ANY paying customer deserve this kind of abuse?

  • Can Flash Player be installed on an external hard drive?

I have this game I am trying to install on an external hard drive that requires Flash Player and even though it is installed on my computer the game keeps popping up with Flash Player is required for this install. Would you like to install it now? Is there any way to install Flash Player on my external or get the game's installer to recognize it being on the hard drive. I don't want to install the game to my computer. Thanks for any help.

Flash Player is installed on the Windows system32 and syswo64 folders; it cannot be installed anywhere else.
What does that game require: the ActiveX control, or the plugin?  If in doubt, install both.

Does your printer have a slot for an SD card?  Is there are card in the slot?  If so, the computer is trying to mount that card as an external device.  It might be corrupted so that it can't be read.

Well, for FCP to see this file structure and recognize it, you need to download the Canon XF Log and Transfer plugin...

    >I don't have the original clips on the card.
Meaning that they didn't back up the full card structure?  Lordy...very few shooters do this and it is maddening.  If you don't have the full card structure, even with the plugin, FCP cannot log and transfer.
As for ClipWrap2...that should work.  Do you have the right files?
