Back Up vs. Time Machine Vs. Self Back up

First off, I don't know much about macs so I need some help in backing up our computer.
We have a MacBook Pro 10.6.2. It is a little over 3 years old so we don't have Snow Leopard. My husband has been using Backup to back up our info to an external HD. We just got an new external harddrive (Western Digital Passport, 500 G) to replace our old one. Our internal hard drive has a capacity of about 120, of which we have used 91.
We would like to use our external HD as both a place to back up our computer and store things that we don't often use (such as pictures, music etc). We also just got a camcorder. So we would like to put our home video on the external drive as well.
So here are my questions. Do I need to use a program? We have backup (do we have to pay for that every year). I looked at our HD and it seems like we have Time Machine as well. Which one is better or is it not even necessary to use a program? If I don't use a program, how to I go about saving changes that are made or would i need to do frequent full back ups and erase the prior backup? Do I need to partition the drive? If so, how do I do that?
Lots of questions, sorry. I just want to do this right and would hate to lose any of our data. Thanks for helping!

Are you sure? You've posted in the +Snow Leopard > Time Machine+ forum, and your profile at the bottom says you're running 10.6.2, which is Snow Leopard. But as long as you're on either Leopard or Snow Leopard, you can use Time Machine.

Using Backup to an external HD wasn't a bad idea before Time Machine became available (Leopard), but isn't anymore. Time Machine is about a zillion times better, and Apple recommends it over Backup for that purpose: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1284
What Backup is still good for are backups of relatively small amounts of data to your iDisk, which gets them off-site quickly, easily, and automatically. Things like preferences, settings, address book, a fairly small amount of documents, etc., are good candidates for this.
It's also good for backing-up larger things to CDs/DVDs that you can take off-site.
Time Machine, on the other hand, backs-up your entire system: OSX, apps, preferences, settings, data, etc. It's first backup takes quite a while, since it copies everything. But thereafter, it copies only what's new or changed since the last backup, but keeps the old version. It will do this hourly, if your Mac is awake and the drive is attached. This gives you several advantages:
If you change or delete the wrong file (such as "Save" instead of "Save As"), or a file gets corrupted somehow, you have an excellent chance of recovering a previous version quite easily.
If your internal HD fails, or something else awful happens to your Mac, you can recover your entire system to the exact state it was in at the time of the last backup, once the drive is replaced or other problem is fixed, or a lost or stolen Mac is replaced.
If you install an upgrade that turns out to be a problem, such as incompatible hardware or software, you can also recover your entire system, using any prior backup, even if it's a different version of Leopard or Snow Leopard.

You can do that, although it's best to partition the drive. See #1 and #3 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
The other consideration is, be sure you have some other way to back-up the data on the "other" partition. You could archive it to CDs/DVDs by just copying, or using Backup.
So here are my questions. Do I need to use a program?
For most of us, it's best. Something that can be scheduled to run automatically (and/or when you attach a disk) is much harder to forget or mess up.
We have backup (do we have to pay for that every year).
If all you're using MobileMe for is Backup, and you have some way to get your most critical stuff off-site, then it may not be worth it. (If you're using the ".me" or ".mac" email address, that's part of the Mobile Me package, too.)
My recommendation would be to do something along the lines of what I do: my primary backups are full Time Machine backups, done automatically (hourly).
My secondary backup is a "bootable clone" via the CarbonCopyCloner app (similar to the SuperDuper app mentioned by NA Smith). These make a copy of your entire system, too, but don't usually contain any past items, so if you delete, change, or corrupt something and do a backup before you notice it, you can't recover it. As posted, they are "bootable," meaning you can start and run your Mac from them normally (if slower) if your internal HD fails. Mine is scheduled to run daily, to a separate HD from my TM backups. Some folks get portable HDs for this, and take them off-site so they're protected against fire, flood, theft, etc.
I also have some items going to iDisk daily, and larger ones to CDs/DVDs that I take to my safe deposit box.
But this is not a "one size fits all" sort of thing; your desires and requirements will be different, so a good strategy for you may be different as well.

    If you backup your iPad to iTunes on a Mac, when the Mac backs up to the Time Capsule using Time Machine, the backups in iTunes are placed on the Time Capsule.

    If the program is a self-contained application that was installed by dragging and dropping it into your Applications folder, then you can go to your applications folder and invoke Time Machine. Then go back in time until you see the first backup of the application, right-click it, and then choose the option to delete all backups of the item.

    Have you updated your iTunes on your computer? WIth a device running iOS7, you need iTunes 11.
    When you removed iTUnes, did you see something named 'apple mobile device support' or something like it? (The exact name varies from operating system to operating system). If you see that, uninstall it too. That's the drivers for your iPhone and they should self-install when you plug your device in.
    If all that is fine, have you checked your cable and USB port? a malfunctioning cable can keep you from syncing.

    I have just had something mysterious happen to my Macbook - it spontaneously shut down, then wouldn't restart past a gray screen with Apple logo. After trying every troubleshooting page I could find, I ended up doing an archive and (re)install of Leopard on my hard drive. (btw, I ran the Disk Utility hard drive diagnostic, and it said the HD is fine, though I'm skeptical because it's making new noises I've never heard before.)
    I finished that install, restarted, everything seemed fine, and I re-connected the external hard drive that had been used for my Time Machine backups before. Now, every time it attempts to back up, it's stuck on "preparing" for 30 minutes, then starts copying SLOWLY and the progress bar says "6 KB of 10 GB." Well, I have a lot more than 10 GB to back up. Then the process halts and I get an error message: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume." And I can't get any more specific information about the error - can't find a log file or anything.
    I know that there's a troubleshooting article about Time Machine issues with only backing up 10 GB, but mine doesn't even get that far, and besides, this is not my first Time Machine backup - I have no other external drive big enough to transfer my older data to while I reformat this drive as the support article suggests.
    I was thinking that perhaps a system setting got messed up somehow and that maybe I should just forget this archive & install thing I did and instead do a fresh erase & install on my Macbook hard drive and then restore from Time Machine's old backup (a day or so before my Macbook started acting weird). But 1. would that make a difference? And 2. if Leopard gives me an error while backing up in Time Machine, what if I do the erase & install and I get an error trying to restore from Time Machine? That would be a nightmare.
    My Macbook has always been so reliable - I'm very confused about what's going on! Any help would be appreciated.

    Does your external hard drive have it's own power supply?  It should.
    Is your external hard drive formatted with the NTFS file system?  It won't work.
    It needs to be formatted either with Mac OS Extended or FAT32.
    (There are drivers available to add NTFS support to OS X but their quality is unknown, especially the "free" ones.)

    I want to take them all off my laptop, now............as I need to use it for WORK!!

    They are now in alphabetical order (all 19,000+ of them) NOT IN THEIR EVENTS or date order. (-They have also been taken with different cameras over the years and some of the generic camera numbering remains.)
    I have tried to copy them (only a few as an experiment)  one event at a time, but that again "opens up" the Event "folder" and tips them out as individuals and therefore just lists image letters and numbers alphabetically.
    How can I copy
    the whole library still in  "Events" to an external hard drive?
    the folders/albums I have already made on to this hard drive?
    and how can I add to this back up monthly, again keeping events and folders separate and updated?
    Mac is so user friendly - there must be a way.........

    UPDATE : I have re-installed from disk, various apps that were no longer functioning such as iLife, iWork etc. So, I now can access my photos again.
    Also, I had to re-install all the software for my printer ( Stylus Pro 4880 ) and reset it so the printer is working again.
    Photoshop CS4 won't open. I think I will have to get in touch with Adobe as basically, I guess they have a built-in "blocker" which prevents me from opening the app as the license is for only 1 user and having re-installed the OS, there are now, in effect, 2 users ( Me and Me 1, I think ).
    So, having added on a new external HD, Time Machine has made a copy of most of the files, folders, apps etc onto the external HD. The internal HD is still nearly full ( 220 GBs out of 232 GBs ).
    I am guessing the way to go now in order to free up space on the internal HD is to delete/trash older photos from my iPhoto library and hope that if needed, I will be able to access them on the external HD.
    Am I correct ? Please advise before I do something I will regret.

    My Lacie External backed up on Time Machine after the first back up but now says there's not enough room. I thought TM deleted old back ups to save new versions. What am I doing wrong. This happens to me constantly. Every single external hard drive I've purchased for the MacBook Pro (5 of them) has not worked either initially or at the second back up. It either isn't formatted properly so I have to go to Genius bar to help me set up for the first back up, or after the first back up, it says there's not enough space and I have to go back to Genius Bar. Is there a way I can fix this on my own?

    I just purchased 2 external hardrives. a LaCie Minimus and a G Drive. Each 1 TB. The guy at Apple told me that would provide 2 good TM backups for me. My internal HD has 750 GB capacity, of which I'm using 700 GB. Perhaps the ratio is not great enough. I do wish they would have told me this before I purchased the two Bummmmer! I even had them format and get the first back-ups going because of issues I've had in the past. I also just bought a 750 GB for photos.
    So, I won't be able to buy another bigger external since I've just purchased 3. Ugh. Well, I'll just exclude some files and divide things up. Eventually, I just want my 20,000 iphotos on one of the 1TB externals, and a TM back-up on another so that iphoto will function once more. It really hates how many photos I have and is brutally punishing me for it.I seriously need to do some housecleaning!
    Thanks for the advice. Just moved from US to Australia last week and was hoping to upload a few photos and the domino effect has lead me to this. Just went to Genius Bar in Perth today and they told me how to reformat drive to transfer iphoto library over, but I got stuck at trying to back-up my TM.

    OK. You've kind of skipped over the reason why you want to go back five hours, but my assumption would be that you've made changes to a Pages file that you want to revert.
    There are two ways to tackle this. From Pages itself, open the current version of your document, and from the File menu, click Revert To, and Browse All Versions. You'll then be in the Time Machine interface for that file, and can browse back to the version you want.
    Or, outside of Pages, you can select the file (or the folder it was originally in, if you've since deleted it) and enter Time Machine from the TM menu (it sounds like you've already tried this?)

    I just bought a My Book 3T to backup my macbook pro 2009 (OS X). It asked (and I agreed) if it would be my Time Machine and I agreed. I didn't realize that Time Machine would actually erase files if the hard drive gets too full. I don't need this as I already have Blackblaze to provide backup in this form. I just need a hard drive to keep my files safe there so I can erase them from the mac which is running out of space (this would be backed up less often, but also backed up on Blackblaze).
    Sooo... AFTER installing time machine and backing up the whole thing I went and did a partition on the hard drive so I could use it as time machine in 1 T, clone in 1T and keep the other 1 T for future use.
    Obviously I did so successfully because I can no longer see the time machine drive. My question is is it gone or is it saved somewhere using up space in the hard drive? Can I now safely back up as Time Machine and Clone in those compartments?

    If you partitioned using the normal disk utility you will have deleted your old TM backup. You will now need to start a new one.

I understand that a number of people have lost data since installing Mavericks on their Western Digital external drives.     TIme Machine won't back up. Displays this:
    Actual capacity of the external backup drive is 999.68 GB and available is 135 gb .
    The imac internal HD capacity is 999.01GB and used space is 636.321 GB.
    This problem has occured periodically in the last 12 months or so, so prior to OS version10.8 install in Jul 2012.
    I previously called AppleCare, as I have a contract, and tech said I just need to reformat the external drive and start over.
    I did that the last time this happened a few months ago, but I don't like that option, as it eliminates all the prior backups,
    What if I needed to try to recover something I deleted 3 weeks ago, for example.  I couldn't do so as all backups would have been deleted, of course, by me having refomatted the drive and basically starting over.  Also, I noted in another post about a person having a problem due to using a partitioned drive.  Mine is not partition, as far as I can tell.  See this:

    The solution is essentially "simple." You need a larger hard drive for these backups or you need to use a different backup solution. By this I mean using backup software that does not preserve an archive of old copies of a file, but simply erases old copies in order to replace them with the new copies. By replacing your backup drive can always accommodate the drive it backs up if it is large enough - say the same size. I can suggest:

    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    Synk Pro
    Tri-Backup
    Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
    All of the above are capable of being scheduled. Synk Pro makes immediate backups of any changed file on the hard drive. You may configure it to archive changes (like Time Machine) or to delete prior copies.

    My time machine was backing up fine and with everything being backed up was filling to about 360gb I backed it up last 5 days ago before it went in for a repair at the apple store (spotlight was not working properly) now I have the machine back and have just put some new photos on so plugged back in the time machine to carry on with backups but it won't back up as it saying it needs 380GB of space and I only have available 144 GB.
    The only thing I can see different is that the store has put a macintosh HD icon on my desktop, I am wondering if perhaps it is also trying to back up the time machine, as in theory I have only added another 1-2GB data since my backup before going into the store.
    Can anyone help me I can' seem to find anything that says I am backing up the G-Drive Slim (Time machine) as well or can I delete the whole contents of the Time Machine and start again?

    If your MacBook is brand new please update your User Profile to reflect your current devices/OS.

  • Time machine won't back up

    I just got a new MacBook Air with Lion.  On my old Mac, I thought I remembered that Time Machine would only backup files that have changed since the last time I backed up my drive.  I used Time Machine to transfer my old desktop to my new Air.  Today when I tried to use TIme Machine to back it up, it said I did not have enough space.
    I'm not clear if it's trying to back up the whole drive or just things that have changed since the install (which is all I need).
    What should I do to make more room for my current back up or to instruct Time Machine only to back up items that have changed since the last backup?

    FWIW I had this sort of problem which generally #$%^& me off. I had a brainstorm and tried somebody's MBP and it worked just as expected. So I reinstalled Leopard after erasing and formating the drive and using time machine off my external LaCie.
    That didn't work worth a #$%^&
    So I once again, reformatted the drive and reinstalled leopard FROM THE DVD and then used time machine as part of the migration assistant, and everything worked perfectly, and I can now use TC with my Mac Pro octo.
    So something MIGHT be hosed on your system, and if you feel that you have a solid back up, reinstall off the DVD and then migrate with time machine.
    Hope this helps. I spent about 2 days getting this straightened out.

    I just restored my system after a failure, and now Time Machine won't back up my hard drive. It gets about 40 out of 90 Gigabytes done, and then gives me an error message that just says that there was an error while backing up, and doesn't give any other information. I ran a Verify Disk with Disk Utility, and there is nothing wrong with the backup drive, and there is more than 200 Gigabytes of space left on that drive.
