Backdrop effects?

Hello everyone,
I have a Power Mac G5 Quad and am VERY well aware that backdrop effects won't work on powerpc processors. But, is there a third party app which will handle backdrop effects, by-passing Apple's built in check for intel processors?
its really no biggy, just that I would like to display backdrop effects which I know the Quad G5 would be more than capable of doing. Also, i am sorry if this is in the wrong forum section, but I just wanted to know how or if its possible to display backdrop effects on the last G5 powermac. I can display photo effects, but not the backdrop effects.
If someone can tell me if there is a 3rd party app out there for displaying backdrops, please let me know.

I think people are worrying about a bit of a non-feature here. I also have an Intel Mac and have had problems with rendering in leopard and general graphical weirdness within Ichat.
The understanding i have is that this was destined always to be an Intel only feature resulted from initial beta tests across platforms being so slow it was impractical to work.
This is why the effects are only viewable when both users in a chat are using the latest version.
For me its a natural progression to start migrating features for the Intel only crowd, but i think that PPC owners will still get a decent period of ownership. I'd imagine at least further OS update would be PPC compatible.

  • Photo Booth Backdrop Effects Not Working Properly

Special Effects and Distortion Effects work but Backdrop Effects (Clouds, Color Dots, Earthrise, Eiffel Tower, Fish, Rollercoaster, Sunset, Yosemite)
doesn't. It would ask me to step out of the frame and I do, then I get Background Detected and I step in the frame but here's the problem. The backdrop doesn't show correctly. Say I choose 'Eiffel Tower' I can't see the whole backdrop just some of it because my actual background (wall) interferes, in other words I can see both my wall and the backdrop. How can I fix this?

  • Why I don't have backdrop effect in my photo booth?

I just brought my new iMac and I open photo booth. There were only 2 pages of effect. Why I don't have backdrop effect in my photo booth?

An iNtel Mac is required to use backgrounds (backdrops.)

If your "new" iMac is an iNtel Mac, one of the following may help you:
    (1) Does the problem persist after you have restarted your Mac?
    (2) If so, repair permissions and test to see if the problem persists afterward. (If you need help, launch your Mac's Disk Utility and search Help for "Repairing disk permissions".)
    (3) If the problem continues, download and install the Mac OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update:
After the restart that completes the Combo Update installation, repair permissions again. Then check again to see if the problem continues.
    (4) If you still have the problem, you can follow the instructions in your iMac's User Guide (Manual) for reinstalling your applications software. Repair permissions after the install and check to see if you have a fix.
    (5) If all else fails, contact your retailer for assistance to get your new iMac working properly.

  • Video backdrop effects don't show up as option

Hi there. Just got my leopard. Trying to use the video backdrop effects, but I only have the first 2 options of effects. (I've tried it in the preferences section as well as during a video chat - the backdrop option panels don't appear as choices)
    Any reason for that?

    Hi
    Quoting iChat Help:
Requirements for video effects and backdrops
If your computer meets certain requirements, you can change the video effect or backdrop of a video chat.
■Requirements for video effects (also called Photo Booth Effects):
■Macintosh computer with an Intel processor, or a multiprocessor PowerPC computer with a graphics card that supports Core Image hardware acceleration
■High-speed broadband Internet connection that supports at least 128K bits per second for both downloading and uploading
    ■Requirements for backdrops:
■Macintosh computer with an Intel processor
■iSight camera, or a camera with fixed focus and exposure and white balance
■High-speed broadband Internet connection that supports at least 128K bits per second for both downloading and uploading
To see what type of processors are in your computer, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To find out if your graphics card supports Core Image hardware acceleration, choose Apple menu > System Profiler, and then click Graphics/Displays in the Hardware section. The list should include the line, “Core Image: Hardware Accelerated.”
To find out the speed of your Internet connection, contact your Internet service provider (ISP), or refer to the literature your service provided. Note that the speed listed in the service provider’s literature is a maximum speed; the actual speed may be lower.

    Hi,
    The Short answer is No.
Apple used the processor Specs over the Graphics card specs as these provides a clearer dividing line between different computers. (even though in reality it is the graphics Card that is key)
PowerBoost from Ecamm can help those that do not even get the Effects (the page warns NO Backdrops)
    http://www.ecamm.com/mac/powerboost/
For iChat 3 users using 10.4.9 or lower there is ChatFX
BUT as the WARNING at the top of their page this does not work after OS 10.4.10
I have not seen a replacement for this.

  • Backdrops with Sony DV Camcorder in iChat and Photo Booth

Hello I have found the Backdrops will not work with my DV camcorder, I have seen on apple's iChat page that "Backdrop effects when using a DV camcorder require fixed focus, exposure, and white balance". How do I do that with my camcorder (or can it even be done on most?)

    Hi,
Do you have an internal iSight as well ? (i.e. not a Mac Mini or Mac Pro)
Do the Backdrops work for that camera in iChat and Photo Booth ?
I have a MacBook Pro and it has an Interanl iSight
I have plugged in an X-Box 360 camera and the current USB 2.0 USB Video Class (UVC) camera I use with my G4 and they work.
Prior to buying the G4 a USB 2.0 Card and a new camera I was using A Dazzle Hollywood DV Convertor with a older Canon UC600 analogue Camcorder (Converting PAL TV signals to DV then via Firewire to the Computer) and this worked to the MacBook Pro as well
With that in mid I am not sure it all about the Auto Focus and White Balance other than those can help get the best pictures.
I would be interested in how the "Video" is getting form camera to computuer ?
What sort of Signal that is ?
    Whether Backdrops work anyway ?

  • Missing Photo Booth Effects

For some reason, I only have two pages of effects in my Photo Booth application. There are no backdrop effects, either prefab or blank frames where I can create my own. I've got version 2.0.3, so I don't think I've missed an upgrade anywhere.
Can anyone help me figure this out? My big fear is that since my iMac is one of the pre-Intel chip machines, I'm out of luck. Hoping this isn't the case, though.

Rats. That certainly limits my options.
Can you explain the graphics card to a non-techie? Is this something I can add to my existing platform? Will I need to take my machine in to a store? Can I do it myself? Is it expensive?

  • Photo Booth issues ie - Effects

I have owned my iMac since December and had no problems until I took the last version of Leopard V10.5.2 One issue I have is with Photo Booth. It pertains to the effect section, which is the third option after clicking the effect button. I click on one of the background effects, move out of the way like it says and when I move back into the camera view, I can see myself, the background effect and black spots, which happens to be what is behind me. I move around and the black or what I call black holes, they move with me. it is like, this function does not work at all, when it once did. I hardly use photo booth, but I paid a lot of money for a product that is only a few months old, I just want it to work. Could someone offer some help or point me in the right direction? Thanks

Welcome to Apple Discussions, Silver Dragon
If your only problem is with Photo Booth (or the Photo Booth effects in iChat), consider the suggestions in these help articles:

  • Photo Booth missing effects

Do you have an Intel Mac? The additional effects are NOT available on Power PC macs, only on Intel Macs

  • Missing effects with new webcam

i just got a new webcam for christmas. i plugged it in and it worked right off nice and clear. but in photo booth im missing more pages of effects. on my sisters macbook theres a page where you can change the background to a video like a greenscreen (i saw that in the leopard preview and in the wwdc video). but on my mac its not there. do i have to have an isight to get stuff like that. if so that would be very stupid since apple doesnt even sell them anymore.

According to this Support Document ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306687 ), you will not have any Photobooth effects available without Intel Core Duo or later CPU, and to use the Backdrop effects, you need a Core 2 Duo. Your details shows you with a G5, not meeting these standards.
If you do have the appropriate Intel, your video camera has to be of a certain standard (known as UVC), or a Firewire video camera.
We too were sad when one of our computers fell below the threshold.
It is still so nice to have the ability to see one another and video chat- my 2 year old son loves to see his dad when I'm away.

  • (Leopard) Photobooth, backdrop issues

Has anyone experienced issues with the new "Backdrop" effects in photobooth? My daughter has been trying to place herself in some of the backdrops such as Yosemite and Eifel Tower but it seems to have video tears when she places herself in the backdrop.
She turns on the effect, it asks to step away of the frame, it states it detects the background, she then places herself in frame but video tears appear... Anyone experiencing this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    BB

    Hi,
I'm having huge video tears and pixelation when using the backdrop effects. Other forums have had users reporting the same problem. It is so bad that the effects are unusable.
I've tried it with the lights on (during the day) and the lights off, and with very low light levels. The amount of light shining on to the background seems not to make too much difference. The video tears are related to colours.
If you're wearing colours that are the same as those in the backdrop effect then you'll get video tears. Tears also appear if coloured items behind you match the colour used in a backdrop effect.

  • Screen Sharing and Video Chat

Hi! I have 2 computers right next to eachother, and I felt like testing out the new Video Effects and Screen Sharing abilities of Leopard.
So, I logged on to each of the computers in iChat (with 2 different accounts), and attempted to do this. However, whenever I attempt to Video Conference or Share Screen, I get an error, saying the other person (the one that accepted the request), cancelled the conference.
    So what's up with that?!
I am sorry if this isn't clear, and I will post back with any additional info you need.
    Thanks!

    iChat requirements
    * Audio chats require a microphone and a 56-Kbps Internet connection.
    * Video chats require an iSight camera (built-in or external), USB video class (UVC) camera, or FireWire DV camcorder; and 128-Kbps upstream and downstream Internet connection.
    * Photo Booth and backdrop effects require an Intel Core Duo or faster processor.
    * Backdrop effects when using a DV camcorder require fixed focus, exposure, and white balance.
    * Some iChat features offer better performance and quality with higher system capabilities.

what happens when we try to share screens:
we get a fail to connect message. but, for a second or two i can hear the other person, then the connection fails... i have seen the screen sharing starting message, but it would stop and fail. 3 seconds tops..

  • Rapid flickering while using video chat

Hi, I'm new here but not new to macs. I've owned my imac for a couple of months now and haven't experienced any problems with it until now. I've used video chat many times on this computer but today, when I was vid chatting with a friend, the video screen would flicker my wallpaper (background) and certain tabs of open applications. This continued throughout the entire time I was using video chat. I know it wasn't his connection because I held up a mirror to my friend and he saw it too.
I recently had dragged some .GIF files into the blank 'backdrop' effects box but I highly doubt that caused the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated!
