Backdrops in Lightroom 2

I need to be able to make the white backdrops completely white, and black backdrops completely black in Lightroom 2 on Mac. I knew how to do it on Windows, but I recently bought a Mac and have no idea what to do. Thanks!

First, update your LR 2.3 to 2.7. The update is free and should help with some things: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4677
If after updating Lightroom, it doesn't start working, initiate a repair install of Photoshop CS6.

  • Lightroom 2 colour difference in lightroom vs. export and print

    Hi,
I am currently using Lightroom 2 and Windows Vista, monitor profile is Dell's E248WFP Color profile.
The problem I have is that everything looks fine in lightroom, I was able to see the black backdrop with some defining detail on it. However, when I export the photo (export colour space: sRGB) and view it, the photo darkens, I could no longer see any detail in the black backdrop (I've tried othercolour space like the adobeRGB but results is the same). I understand that there could be difference using Windows viewer as someone has pointed out to me. I tried importing what I've just exported from lightroom back into lightroom and I could see all the original details.
So I am guessing it's just an issue with windows viewer not able to display all the colours intended. I than send the file to "Blacks photography" (photo developing store) for printing and the same issue exists, it's darker than what is displaying in lightroom. Could someone please point me to the right direction?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi,
Thanks for the advice, I bought a Spyder pro 3 thinking that might solve the problem but I think the problem is what is being exported? (not sure)
Photo looks good in LR but after exporting, open the file and looks different in windows photo gallery than what's in LR.
So I tried looking at the exported jpg in LR and it looks good in LR. I assume that's normal as people has mentioned that LR will display more colour and do it correctly. The problem for me than is printing. I send the photos to local photo processing stores and the colour is still off. Sorry for the ramble but here are some of my questions:
I assume it's completely ok that photos look different in LR and windows photo gallery (or even other viewer).  As look as it looks ok in LR than it's fine?
Is the problem with a low quality monitor (Dell's E248WFP)?
I might not be calibrating it correctly? (will try again)
    Thanks again!!

  • Lightroom 4 - Banding/Posterization in shadows

    Hi,
Ever since I upgraded to LR4, I've noticed severe banding/posterization in the shadow areas when using the graduated filter with reduced exposure or using the vignette to on Amount -100.
I previously used these tools in LR3 to create fade to black areas in my shots, but have noticed that now, instead of a nice smooth gradient, I get a hard black edge, with a green band stippled into the black before returning to (in this particular case) a grey backdrop rather than a smooth transition from black (like I used to get with LR3).
Initially I thought it was my GFX card as my main one died and I temporarily replaced it with an older card. However, I recently purchased an Nvidia GEForce 630 as a replacement and it's still an issue. I also exported a file and viewed it on my partner's HP latop and the issue was still there.
I googled LR4 shadow banding to try and find answers but didn't have much luck. Is any one else experiencing this issue, or do I just have some sort anomoly?
    Tech info::
    Windows 7 64bit
    Lightroom 4.1
    Dell 2408 WFP monitor
    GeForce GT630
    Spyder 3 Calibration
Any help would be appreciated as at this point I'm not sure whether it's something with my system or LR4.
    Thanks in advance.

There is an issue with the 'local tools' in that they are applied before the global tools, which can reduce dynamic range in the highlight and shadow areas. This may also be the case for the Post-Crop Vignetting tool, but I haven't tested it.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4612100#4612100
Why it only shows up with certain cameras is probably due to the available dynamic range in the individual raw image files.
Another possible issue that could be contributing to the "banding" artifacts is your Dell 2408WFP wide gamut monitor. Using a wide gamut monitor with 24 bit display data stretches the available gradations (16,777,216 colors) over a wider range, and provides less smoothness (i.e. banding). Many wide gamut monitor users will argue that this is NOT the case for them and that may be true. But anytime you use "extreme settings" in LR (100% settings, two graduated filters/spot tools) you're setting up a situation where banding may become visible. Try exporting an image with banding using TIFF, ProPhoto RGB profile, and 16 bit data, and then view it on another system equipped with a standard gamut display. You can also download this Ramp test file from AMD's site, import it into LR, and see if you have visible banding:
    http://www.amd.com/us/Documents/ramp.psd
Photoshop supports a full 30 bit display data path when using a 30 bit graphics card, but Lightroom only supports 24 bit display data.
In short you have multiple things in LR that may be causing the artifacts you are seeing. My best advice is to use the global controls more heavily (Highlights, Shadows)  and lighten up on the locals, since they can reduce the dynamic range in your image.

  • Create a Transparent Slide for Lightroom

I have found some questions relating to transparency, but they do not provide the answer to this question.
First, let me establish what I want to do as there may be another way of doing it.
I want the Intro screen in a Slideshow to contain some background or introductory text. The Intro screen may be customized by editing the identity plate, but only to provide text on one line - not very useful. The Intro screen consists of the Identity Plate against the background created jointly with the Backdrop controls.
So, I thought this would be easily solved by creating a 'photo' in PS, with the text I require on a transparent background. Then import as another slide. Easy Peasy.
No, not quite, as Saving As... in PS as JPG does not work, TIF offers to save transparency but LR does not honour the promise. I tried GIF, but LR doesn't even 'see' GIFs.
I am sure that Adobe, in the 4.1-th generation of LR, will not have made this impossible, so someone will know....
    Platform>> Lightroom 4.1, Photoshop CS5 v12, Windows 7/64 Pro

The main problem I have with LR's Slideshow module is lack of support for DVD/BD disk authoring and mediocre music track support. I like to create 1080p HD slideshows that will play on my Blu-Ray player hooked up to a 52" Samsung HD TV. Here's my procedure:
    1) Create slideshow in LR using a custom 16:9 widescreen template and image files custom cropped to 16:9 aspect ratio. Add text box using caption metadata unique to each image file. Add small Identity Plate with copyright.
    2) From LR Slideshow module Slideshow> Export Slideshow to JPEGs> 1920 x 1080 (my screen size), 91 Quality
    3) Import LR exported slideshow JPEGs into PowerDirector, add title slide, add music track, and set transitions.
    4) Go to PD 'Produce' module and select H.264, AVCHD 1920 x 1080 (24 Mbps). Make sure to select 24 Mbps quality.
    5) Go to PD 'Create Disc' module, select a menu structure, and edit the menu. Go to 'Disc Preferences' and select 'AVCHD' DVD-4.7GB.
    6) Burn a standard 4.7 GB DVD disk. You can fit up to 500 1920 x 1080 images with up to 45 minutes playing time.
    Absolutely stunningly sharp full-screen images!
Have you tried PD with your Canon 5D MKII MOV files using AVCHD 1920 x 1080 (24 Mbps) setting? Also what version are you using? Mine is 9.0.0.2504. What do you use to playback your videos? Using the Samsung 52" and my Canon 5D MKII 1080p video files processed in PD9 look pretty darn good....and I am a fanatic when it comes to sharp color correct imaging. I got started back in 1976 making up to 20" x 30" Cibachrome color enlargements from Kodachrome slides in my own color darkroom. Kodachrome was one of the sharpest most color accurate films made at the time. What I can achieve today with the 5D MKII in LR far surpasses anything achievable with 35mm Kodachrome and my (superb for the time) Olympus OM series bodies and prime lenses!

  • Runtime error in starting Lightroom

I receive the following message when I try to start Lightroom:
    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!
    Program:...Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.2\lightroom.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
Lightroom ran well for several days and then failed to open with the above message.
I have tried everything I know to do (uninstalled and reinstalled the application, restored the computer to a restore point before Lightroom was originally installed, etc.) and do not know were to go from here. Suggestions would be appreciated.
I am using Windows XP sp2 and have 4 GB of ram and 250 GB of hard disk space.
    Thanks,

  • Lightroom imports photos to wrong folder

I've been importing lots of photos from my hard drive into lightroom and been moving/renaming them in the process. I only got lightroom a few weeks ago.
This has worked fine but i've recently imported a few hundred photos off my iphone and doing the same thing - move and rename. The trouble is, these photos keep going into the 2009 folder, instead of the 2012 or 2013 folders that they should be. When i look at the photos, they have the correct name, and the capture date seems to be correct, its just lightroom keeps wanting to put them in the wrong folder by year. Does anyone understand why this might be happening?
naturally I want all my photos sorted into the right date folders as this is the way ive decided to organise my photos...

hmm so still not making sense. it keeps wanting to import my photos into the wrong destination. have removed all the photo from lightroom. how do i change it so it automatically puts the photos into the corresponding year/month they were taken..
I understand its something in the import settings/destination but cant seem to change this. not sure what parts of the import box your wanting to see Dj.
the structure now is my pictures/2009/21-7-09 then its creating new year folders and sorting them within this 21-7-9 folder..
    can't see to change this?

How do I fix this?  I would greatly appreciate it if you would respond with terms and procedures that a computer ignorant user, such as me, will understand.   Thanks.

There are dozens of threads in this forum that describe the fix

  • When I try to open my Lightroom 5 program it comes up with this message, "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit."  How do I fix this?

Can someone please let me know how I can fix this error and open my Lightroom?  Thanks.

You might be quicker help posting in the LR forum rather than the ACR forum, but I believe the way to fix this is to delete the preview cache.
    Find your catalog folder.
    Close LR.
Within the catalog folder, delete the FOLDER called Catalog-Name Previews.lrdata
    Start LR.

  • Lightroom will not launch and comes up with the following message "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit".  Lightroom will attempt to fix the problem next time it launches, except it doesn't fix and I now can

  • How many laptops can I install on with only one lightroom 6 license? (not cc version)

I read from somewhere that one creative cloud  account can be used on two different devices, but what about the lightroom 6 version?
If I pay $149 for lightroom 6, how many laptops can I install on? I now have one windows laptop and one mac.
    Thanks for helping.

I selected yours as the correct answer because of the webpage you provided, but I cannot understand that what "only use it on one computer at a time".

Nope. Be a great feature. For that I use FotoMagico after exporting JPEG's from LR.
