Backed up avchd files to another drive, can I...

Hi
I've backed up my Panny GH2's avchd files to another drive, different from the drive used for editing where they also are.
To use those files, FCPX imports them wrapped in a QT 'sheath' and produces files about the same size, right. I take it that is not an alias of some kind and it doesn't need the original file any more.
So can I now remove those original avchd files to give me more room on the drive since they are backed up elsewhere and FCPX has a file good for editing of a similar size?
Hopefully this  is not too confusing.
best,
elmer

I don't quite get what you mean. When importing in FCPX, you click on the folder and it shows the clips, there's never a choice about importing folder structure that I can see.
And the pop-up window for importing shows 'copy' checked and grayed out so I don't have a choice. I believe that's about how it was in earlier versions of FCPX. I also tested with a small vid file, just moved it actually to another place in the drive which should have broken the connection. No problem with the file in fcpx.
Thanks again!
When You have avchd foorage from a camera, it has a specific folder structure. Some people copy the files from a camera card using the finder and do no copy the e tire folder structure. You ard right that this structure is not apparent shen importing inFCP X.
It is clear that you have it as FCP X makes copy the media over. Thiz is correct behavior when importing from a camera, camera card or camera archive. That's fine.

I tried shifting the Profile folder contents from the old to the new, that seemed to work but I kept getting a message that my security was affected and that the problem could be in that folder so I shifted it back.

    Hello Kencrews,
When you connect the iPod to the computer and iTunes is authorized for your Apple ID, then you will get a prompt to transfer the purchases from the device to the computer. Keep in mind this will only transfer purchased items from the iTunes Store.

However no itunes playlists. i have all my playlists on my iphone and pics etc however when im trying to sync to my new computer itunes wants to  deletes all data off of my iphone so i click cancel

If you have a backup, restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder to the computer.  This restores the library and device association files.  If for some reason you chose to only back up the media and not the entire iTunes folder, then the only option is to let iTunes wipe the drive and re-sync.

  • Disk utility recomends backing up files after hard drive can not be repaired?

My Mac mini will not complete the boot process. I am able to get to the disk utility by using the Snow Lepard disk that I recently purchased and pressing the option key. Disk utility is telling be that my disk can not be repaired and I should back up as much data as I can and reload the software.
Is there another disk repair program that could possibly fix what disk utility can not? Is it worth a try?
    If not...
How do I back up data on the mounted disk since I can not access it? Do you recommend a perticular external hard drive and software to manage my backups?

    Hi
I've been trying to copy some .mov files (ext. isn't showing, btw) to another drive. When I do I get this msg, 'The operation can't be completed because the item "blah blah" is in use.
I also have gotten this msg when copying the folder: 'The operation can't be completed because the item ".DS_Store" is in use.
Then I tried creating a new folder to put them in, and I get this msg, "The operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -50).
QT isn't open. The only apps open are Firefox and Word.
I tried adding both drives to Spotlight's Privacy in System Prefs. No help.
    Any ideas?
    best,

    Thanks for the reply!
    What is the 'DS_Store' file?
Am I right thinking Tinker Tool allows you to choose from that list of details on this page <http://www.bresink.com/osx/0TinkerTool/details.html>, and doesn't simply enable them all?
Thanks again, maybe someone else can chime in about why I got the other messages, tho maybe the ds_store was the reason for all.

  • How to link itunes library to music files on another drive

this thing seems to be very easy at first but I have been trying to find a fix for this for quite some time now. It started when my stupid SSDrive just stopped working after one year (they say that is not unusual). I lost my windows install and my itunes library file.
Since my music is on another drive it sure was annoying but I found a not too old backup of itunes.itl. However after I reinstalled windows and Itunes I found out that the old itunes.itl was was looking for my music files on drive D:\ - so the easiest thing would be to change the drive where my .mp3s are (currently F:\) to drive D:. However D:\ drive is now the Win7 System drive and I read I am not allowed to change anything and leave it as it is or it would mess up my win7 install.
The itunes.itl is not plaintext so I can't change anything in it. I could go through my thousands of songs and relocate each and everyone by hand but that is not really an option.
I googled my problem quite a bit and found some step by step guides but they often start with "activate keep Itunes Music Folder organized" or "consolidate". But I don't want itunes to change anything to the way my mp3s are stored. I have been using the same file structure for years and don't want itunes to manage it for me.
Is it really so difficult to relocate all files at once?
    Any ideas anyone?
PS: I still have the iphone that I always synchronized with the library before I lost the library. Is there a way to get a .itl out of the iphone and use it on the computer? That library would be up to date.

My script FindTracks can probably sort you out. To keep things simple in future I'd suggest you move the library folder to F:\iTunes and put the media folder inside it as F:\iTunes\iTunes Media, that way when the library is repaired it will be easy to move it to any other location as and when required.

  • Should I convert my MTS (AVCHD) file to another file type before editing with elements 10

I know premiere elements 10 has project settings for working with AVCHD footage but after doing a bit of reading about how AVCHD (MTS) files are a lot harder for your computer to work with I'm thinking it might be better to convert my raw video files to another video file type before editing with premiere elements 10.
I have a reasonably good computer, but it's only a laptop with 361gb free memory, radeon graphics card, core i5 processor and 8GB ram.
If I should convert these files first what file type should I convert them to without loosing too much video quality and where can I find a program to convert them.
    Many thanks
    Sally

I have a reasonably good computer, but it's only a laptop with 361gb free memory, radeon graphics card, core i5 processor and 8GB ram.
My granddaughters and I have been using one of those to edit videos taken in (two) Sony and (one) Panasonic cameras.  The computer is a mid grade Toshiba laptop that is about three years old.  The cameras were purchased after the computer.  Our computer does not have a graphics card, but the other specs are about the same.
I know premiere elements 10 has project settings for working with AVCHD footage but after doing a bit of reading about how AVCHD (MTS) files are a lot harder for your computer to work with I'm thinking it might be better to convert my raw video files to another video file type before editing with premiere elements 10.
I didn't read that until after we had made videos.  The issue is the project preset that is set when you open a new project. If you guess wrong, PrE10 tells you so when you slide the first clip to the timeline.
There is confusion about AVCHD because there is a 1.0 and a 2.0.  The "high" setting for many cameras the last couple of years was 1080p60.  That did not become part of AVCHD until last July.  Now it is and is called 2.0.  PrE10 specs include AVCHD 1.0, so the 1080p60 is "officially" unsupported.   I didn't know that, so I tried a few presets when my files were 1080p60.  A preset of 720p60 worked best.
The "work harder" part primarily has to do with the preview window during editing.  If it is not going smoothly there will probably be a red line above the clip.  Pressing "Enter", getting a cup of coffee and patience will make the red line go away and the preview will be smoother.  The relationship between project presets and final output is a mystery.  My experience is that the presets have only to do with real time preview and little to do with output.  Output requires an entire re-encoding for the chosen viewing platform.  PrE10 seems to ignore the project presets, uses all the markers set in editing and builds the final products from scratch.
If I should convert these files first what file type should I convert them to without loosing too much video quality and where can I find a program to convert them.
Steve and Bill invest a lot of time here helping people like you and me.  But, my experience is that they are wrong.  I see no need to convert the files.  Conversion always has the risk of loosing a little picture quality.  PrE10 seems to handle AVCHD fine.  Let it do the final render using the actual source clips.
Sally, consider upgrading to version 11 where AVCHD 2.0 and 1080p60 is included.  I have.  Processing is a little smother.
    Bill
PS:  Please, with all due respect to Bill and Steve who work hard here, I disagree based only on experience with 3 cameras and one computer.  User experience varies!

  • How to move all FC X files to another drive?

I want to move all my FC X stuff.  Everything currently resides on a Western Digital Firewire 800 eSATA drive.  I'm working on a MacPro tower with 20 GB of RAM and 4 cores.  I'm not overly pleased with the performance when FC X accesses this drive and it gets hot, really hot (burn your hand hot) when backround rendering for large files.  I suspect moving the whole kit and kaboodle to an internal SATA would improve overall performance a bit and I can use smcFanControl to regulate the temperature.
The question:  By doing this will FC X lose all the links to the source files that I've already used in projects?  If so, how do I reconnect media?
I have about two tons of source footage that I imported from cam archives primarily as an excersise when I was first beginning to learn about importing footage in the new app, so much of it is not critical (I can always reimport from the original archives safely held on another drive) however, they've already been analysed and sorted into smart collections at this point and I may want to use some on future projects.  So - should I delete events not used in projects thus far and then properly move the ones that are used in projects via the Move command in the FILE drop down menu or just copy all the files and folders in the FC X folder on the eSATA drive to the internal drive via the finder?  I'm not currently in the middle of any projects.  All have been succesfully completed and rendered out as movies.  The clients are all happy and the most important thing - the checks all cleared, so no worries there.  Benefits? Pitfalls?  Any opinions?  We're talking about 1.5 TB of data here.

Shouldn't be the case, I've cut successfully from a 500gb My Passport Studio HD But keeping in mind I transcode my media.

BTW, the really large events files not referenced in any current projects were able to be moved via the finder much faster than from within FCP X without any noticeable problems.
I always transfer via finder however I try not suggesting that because it's something you have to feel very comfortable with.

how I can restore my backed up Windows files (photos and music in my iTunes library) which ison an external hard drive to my Mac?
This may help:  OS X Lion: About Windows Migration Assistant (but it will make a new User Account on your Mac).
This might be better:  Switch 101: Migrate your Windows files or system to your Mac
    In general, see http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/

Where the **** is the delete button?
Should be at the upper-right, next to the + key, depending on your keyboard.  In many cases, Cmd-X will work, too.

  • Back up AVCHD files

    Hello everybody,
Trying to archive AVCHD files without logging and transferring. I've found that when I log and transfer, the resulting files are massive. That's fine when I'm working on a project.
However. Ideally. I'd like to archive all video shot, to DVD. Then. When I wish to start a new project, mount the DVD I wish to get video from, then log and transfer for editing.
I tried a test 2 days ago: Transfer AVCHD folder from SD Card, to external hard drive. Then I "dragged" the folder into "log and transfer" window. Worked like a charm.
    Tried tonight and no go!!???
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Hi there,
OK, after hearing that everything on the card is part of the AVCHD wrapper, and then reading the same in Tom Wolsky's excellent book, I tried the following and it works every time.
    1. Mount camera as normal
    2. Create a new folder on your media drive and name it something meaningful.
    3. Open the No Name volume your camera mounts as and copy all the contents therein to the new folder.
This new folder can then be added to the Log & Transfer window and the media imported at any time.
To archive this copy the files to a DVD±R and burn.
I have a Panny SD9 and this works for that so should work for you too.

  • AVCHD files on hard drive

How do I import AVCHD files, .mt2s, from my hard drive into Final Cut Pro 7?
I appreciate your help with this question.

Ultimately, what I would like to know is how to archive the tapeless avchd files because unlike my hdv tapes, I'll have to put them on hard drives and same the video files, and have to be able to recover the footage back FCP at some time in the future. < </div>
This is a problem everyone who goes tapeless eventually faces. It means you must cherry pick your clips (AFTER you've finished your production) to reduce the disk space, and then you must create backup copies of the trimmed files to external drives, servers, or other storage media. Multiple copies are better. But having the copies is only the first part of the problem. Now you have to create a cataloging or file taxonomy structure that makes the files usefully available later.

  • I want to triple boot Have Snow Leopard and XP on separate drives and I want Windows 7 on another drive, can it be done by temporarily removing the xp drive and installing windows 7 on another internal drive?

I want to triple boot my Mac Pro I have Snow Leopard and XP on separate drives (osx on drive 1, xp on drive 2) and I want Windows 7 on another drive (drive 4, drive 3 is used by osx for storage), can it be done by temporarily removing the xp drive and installing windows 7 on drive 4?
I realise bootcamp only allows 2 operating systems and refit could change the size of my current xp drive to accomodate W7, that is not an option here for various reasons one being the drive is pretty much at capacity with only about 30gig free (I work with video so that free space fluctautes quite a bit). I have a brand new drive 4 with 1TB set aside ready for W7 but I'm unsure how to go ahead?
any help or advice would be really appreciated, thanks

Boot Camp is used to support Windows on the same drive.
You can have a different OS on every drive.
You could have Windows 7, Vista, and XP all on one drive if you so choose.
I recommend not putting Windows and OS X on the same dirve when talking about Mac Pro - unless you just need something small and lite.
Remove all your other drives while you install Windows 7.
You could even relocate XP - if you need it even - or recover the hard drive space.
You should always keep 30% free for Mac OS; same for data/media drives.
Considering 1.5TB WD Black $110.... and you want OS X to be on a fast high performance drive as well.

  • HT1391 How to move my media files to another drive with Itunes 11

I am using Itunes 11 on a Windows 7 PC.  My C Drive is full and I am trying to move all my media files to D drive.  While previous versions of Itunes seem  to allow this, the instructions for doing so with Itunes 11 state that files already on the drive will stay where they are even if you change the location of the media file.  Only new files will move to the new location.

    About the iTunes library files
Your iTunes library files track the media you add to iTunes, how you've organized it, and other information such as playlists. By default, these two files are in your iTunes folder:
    Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music/iTunes/
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
    Windows Vista: C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\
    Windows 7: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\
    Windows 8: C:\Users\username\My Music\iTunes\

  • How to work so I can re-build from backed-up AVCHD files if I need.

Trying a new title to see if anyone can help.
I'm recording on an AVCHD card, and have two ways of capturing this to FCP and backing up.
    1) USB - Log and Transfer straight from the camera. Then copy the card contents to a spare usb drive for storage. (Been using this)
    2) Copy the card to the usb drive first, then Log and Transfer from the USB drive. (Going to use this)
Both methods produce media and edit ok.
But in the process the files are renamed - twice. First by Log and Transfer, when they are given whatever names I choose in the dialgue box, and then they are often further refined in the browser as I name clips in more detail while cutting.
The card itself is, of course, then cleared to make room for more shots.
    Now, this is my problem:
If I empty my FW scratch disc, as at some point I must, and then need to rebuild the project from the back-up usb drive, I have a problem.
If I try 'reconnect media', the name in the box is the one I gave the clip in the browser, but the name on the drive is still the one the camera generated. So when I 'locate' to the folder on the drive with the clips in, FCP just goes 'click.'
How do i recapture the media from the back-up usb drive? There should be a metadata link, but i don't know how to activate it.
In the old days we could re-digitise form tape (though I confess I can't remember the process now). Suely there is a way to rebuild the whole project, by telling FCP to go looking for the original source files onm the usb drive?
I've tried media manager, but nothing there that I can see.
I'm probably being dumb, but I'd appreciate some advice if anyone knows the answer.
I need to steer my workflow so that in future i can rebuild from back-up if I have to.
    Thanks
    Tom

Ah - I missed batch capture - thanks!.
The only problem is that it's only showing the media from a different project (the clips I captured today for a different programme, which is in a different folder on the same drive).
It's locked out so i can't navigate to the correct folder.
    Hmm
No - wait - got it now!
It was looking for some tapes, of which there were none in the project, but it's seen the error of it's ways.
    Many thanks!
