Backed up iPhone to iTunes and lost space?

Hi all,
I backed up my iPhone to iTunes this morning. It's quite outdated (iPhone 5S still runnings iOS 7.0.2...) At the start I had approx. 50gb free space on my phone. After backing up, iTunes shows that I have only 38gb free.
It shows the photo sector as nearly having tripled, but I don't have any more photos on my phone than I did before I backed up.
Anyone know what's happened, or what to do to get space back?
Many thanks - I've solved heaps of problems (and been saved from turning grey...) from reading these threads!
