Backed up personal files restored on my touchsmart 524 PC but shown no where

I set my HP Tourchmart IQ500 series PC to factory setting, backed up my files on 4 CDs, installed them back on my PC (at least that was what apparently was done after receiving a message that operation was succesfully), but now I CAN NOT FIND THEM (pictures, spreadsheets, word documents, etc)

Hello raduco:
Ready for some fun now. Time to learn a new trick. Open up my computer window. Now you going need to be fast on this. Unless you know witch of the two discs are Recovery Disks. Because we do not want those disks inserted. To jump into recovery.  So insert your data disk. Click off the ask to do window. We are not going to use it. open up my computer.  Right on click E: drive now select open in new window. Now you will see all your files on the disk. Down sise my computer window. So you have more work era on desk top. now open up my pictures folder on the computer Make it small box window. Then do the same thing with my documents folder. Now to move large amouts of files in the white section of folder right click on mouse and hold down on right click until all files are covered blue. Release right click and now right click it again and hold drag to either my documents folder or my pictures folder. Depending witch files are what type.
Repeat these steps  as each disks is inserted . This how you reinstall documents and pictures files.
Now down roed you wanted to install a favorite XP game you follow the same method and look for insulation file and click it. To run as administrater, I have installed XP plus on my computers 99% of software that is on Microsoft not capability list. Please click on Kudos if this has resolved your issue. Thank you. frrw

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Spotlight ▹ Privacy
The list of items excluded from Spotlight indexing is shown (it may be empty.) Click the plus (“+”) icon to add an item to the list. Select your boot volume (under DEVICES) and add it to the list. Then remove it from the list by selecting it and clicking the minus (“-“) icon.
Spotlight will rebuild the index. If you try to do a Spotlight search now from the magnifying-glass icon in the top right corner of the display, a pulsing dot will appear in the icon. When the dot disappears, the indexing is complete.

  • Backing up personal files to Time capsule and then upgrading to Leopard

    Hi.
I recently bought the upgrade disks to Leopard from 10.4.11.
    i also bought Time capsule.
I was advised in the store to save all my personal files (photos, I tunes library, work) to time capsule, then perform a clean upgrade to Leopard, the replace all my personal files to my iMac, then doing the complete system back up to the time capsule.
I have managed to get the iMac talking to Timecapsule, I can print so this is all cool, but how do I save all my personal data to the timecapsule? I'm sorry if this is too daft a question, but I have tried seeing if there was an intuitive way of learning this on the Mac but as these files are so important, I really don't want to make a mistake that would lead to me losing everything.
    Many thanks in advance.
    M.

in the Finder use the Go command (top file menu) and in the window type afp://10.0.1.1 or whatever your TC ip address is, then you should be able to access that hard drive. you should use Airport Utility to assign a password to your TC hard drive.

  • Backing Up your files and HD content.

Just wondered what program everyone was using to back up there files and HD. I tried iBackup but as I have so much music on my MBP it was taking ages to do it. But, then after time if I had added 2 more cd albums to my iTunes then tried to back it up again I had to delete my previous back up and start over. Not the best.
Does anyone know if there is a Back Up program that when you go to Back Up your files for a second time, it just adds the ones missing from your previous back up?
Would love to know as I have already been stung once with my previous PowerBook.
    Thanks all..

Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

  • How do I use the back-up discs I created before restoring, to recover my personal files, etc.??

I own a Compaq Presario CQ56 109WM Notebook PC that I recently ran System Recovery on to restore it to the "Out-Of-Box State," due to a virus or crash or something that would no longer allow the computer to boot to Windows. Beforehand I backed up my personal files, pics, music, preferences, etc. on a set of 5 DVD+R discs. Now the computer seems to be running fine to my knowledge, however I have no idea how to use these discs. When I finally got them to read in my disc drive, I found a .exe file on the first disc for the Recovery Manager, which I opened obviously, and it was supposed to create a folder on my desktop and open all my stuff. However while doing the first disc I got like an error message that said "Recovery Manager could not restore the file 10.wim. Do you want to continue?" I clicked yes, and it gave me the same message for files 11-19.wim, 2.wim, and 20-27.wim. I have no idea what this all means. Also after it was done, I do have a folder on my desktop, which has 3 other folders inside, and inside of those is a ton of other crazy folders and files, which I'm sure my stuff is in SOMEWHERE but the question is, HOW DO I ACCESS AND RESTORE IT ALL TO WHERE AND HOW IT WAS??? LOL PLEASE HELP!!
    This question was solved.

HP Backup backs up many folders that are useless, most of your personal files should be in a folder with your old user name in the "Users" folder. This Backup app is also known to be a pain.
As for why you got the error, which sounds like all files were not extracted, that could be a faulty DVD, something caused a bad write to DVD,etc.
If you don't see a 'Users' folder, I would probably start by deleting the folder created on Desktop and make a new one either on desktop or in My Documents. Next copy files from each DVD to that new folder. From the folder try running the .EXE file again to see if any better results.
One other suggestion-go into Control Panel, Folder Options and check to be sure 'Hidden files' are shown.
If all else fails, install 7Zip and try it to extract the .WIM files.

Yeap that all makes sense now.
Do you only have the current backup showing in the TM display?? Won't it fill in the rest?
Over wireless are you waiting for the indexing to finish.. ??
Previous backup may not show for a couple of hours.
Long short of it.. Mavericks version of TM is a pain.
Sometimes it is easier to completely ignore the TM backup and do the restore manually.
I have posted the details here. See if this helps.

    Welcome!
how I can restore my backed up Windows files (photos and music in my iTunes library) which ison an external hard drive to my Mac?
This may help:  OS X Lion: About Windows Migration Assistant (but it will make a new User Account on your Mac).
This might be better:  Switch 101: Migrate your Windows files or system to your Mac
    In general, see http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/
    This might be helpful:  http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/tour/
And a bunch of video and text tutorials here:  http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/
Where the **** is the delete button?
Should be at the upper-right, next to the + key, depending on your keyboard.  In many cases, Cmd-X will work, too.

  • Restored, Made Back Up Files, Restored them via Drive E

    Hi,
I originally rececived the BSOD, so I made back up files, & restored the PC. I use Win 7 Home
Now, I had to put the first of the 8 disks back into my PC. Then via E drive, I accessed the first disk, open it & at the fottom of the files was a Restore file or app. I clicked it & it said to put in Disk 2, then 3 & so on thru 8.
But now, I open Libraries & under pictures, none of my pictures are there. But at the bottom in the left panel, under Computer, I see this:
    "Back up files 2014-05-17 171024"
    But when I open that, I see 93.win 8/17/2014 8:58 Win File
    & see that from 94.win to 99.win
How do I get all my photos, music, documents, saved websites back?
I thought once I backed them up, & restored them back into the reformatted HD of my laptop, they would all fall back into where they were
    Thanks for any/all
    Frustrated

    1: HP G72  B60us P/N: XG988UA#ABA
2: Restore question, No, When the PC went thru it's own self repair but couldn't fix it, I followed the on screen choices. First I used 8 discs to back up all my files.
Then I chose System Restore for out of box condition. I think you may mean HP system recovery. System restore is not the same thing. Perhaps you also meant HP factory image recovery. Is that the case?
3: I then placed the discs one by one into the Notebook CD/DVD slot for lack of proper. Message on Screen asked me to place Disk one, then finished & asked for 2, thru 8.
And clicking on the Computer Icon, it gave me Local C, Recovery drive, & Devices with removeable storage VD RW  Drive  (E File Backup 1
I thought this would be easy!  Back up my files, via the PC, then after HD is reformatted, I insert the back up disks, & the photos go to My Pictures, all my music goes to WMP, etc. but early on, it very frustrating!
Thanks again for all your help!
What is the installed operating system?
Did you use the HP recovery disk set or usb recovery media?
Did you press F11 to access the Recovery Manager and then select factory image recovery?
It may seem as if I am asking you many questions, but please bear with me as I must know exactly which programs you used.  The next time you have issues try booting into safe mode.

  • Restore of backed up EFS files

Hello, we recently started to use EFS encryption on our file server. thats works ok, as well as the windows server backup, however when i go to restore an encrypted efs file via the console for the backup, i get a restore error....
"File recovery could not complete" "No files could be recovered"  I am also restoring to teh desktop rather than original location..
When i restore a non encrypted file all is good.
I am the admin user on a Windows server 2011 SBS server when doing this. Is there a special way to restore EFS files ?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks..

    Hi,
Please go to "Backup and Restore"\Restore my files (Restore all users' files)\Browse for files (Browse for files ) to view the content of your backup, make sure that teh encrypted files are
    included in it.
If you install a new operating system or  upgrade your current one, or if your current operating system fails, then you might lose access to the EFS files, if so, you need a copy of your encryption key and related certificate to regain access.

Yeah, I have a macbook but everyone else has a windows computer. If we buy this will they be able to back up their files on the Time Capsule wirelessly as well? Also, if I put a backup onto the Time Capsule, will everyone be able to see what is on my back up, or will I just be able to see the back up for my computer?

Only you will see the backup of your Mac.
will they be able to back up their files on the Time Capsule wirelessly as well?
You will need a special Windows application like Genie Timeline Pro to be able to backup the PCs automatically to the Time Capsule. Otherwise, you must manually copy the files over.
Check with the Genie folks on backup details for the PCs before you buy.

  • How do I reinstall Yosemite while keeping my personal files & settings?

    Hi,
I am running Yosemite (10.10.2) on my 2013 Macbook Air and its in need of some love. Most notably, my Notes app has broken (it crashes on every attempt to open it) and my bluetooth has gone haywire (device detection and personal hotspot works when they feel like it), my display will randomly go black and is becoming an increasingly mysterious and lengthy process to get it back (normally just mashing keys and opening and closing the lid several times over). Thats just the half of it.
I want to say the mass majority of these issues began after signing myself up to receive all these alpha, beta, omega, apple tree pre-seed, under-cooked releases or whatever apple pushes down the pipeline. Needless to say, I feel its time to reinstall my OS though I am quickly discovering that this whole process was significantly easier in a Windows environment which seems really counter-intuitive considering well, this is Apple and things are just supposed to work like magical butter.
So I ended up reinstalling Yosemite through the Recovery Utility (CMD+R). It downloaded from the internet and installed. My personal files were kept intact but it didn't fix my Notes app as it still kept quitting unexpectedly when trying to launch it. So I opted to perform a clean install. I quickly realized this was a TERRIBLE idea as I was unable to recover important settings like my keychain passwords, my email accounts and so forth. Thankfully I made a time machine backup before attempting any of this so I am right back where I started (sort of).
    I need some help please.
My goal is to perform a clean install of Yosemite to rid myself of these OS oddities meanwhile keeping everything important. This includes, most notably:
my personal document, photo and music files
    my iTunes library
my iPhoto library (and more importantly, the settings, albums tags, image edits etc etc) that I've made over the years
    my keychain passwords
my email accounts (it took me almost an hour to setup and properly configure all 9 of my email accounts and i don't want to go through that again)
my calendar and events within it
Other settings I would like to keep, but am willing to sacrifice are:
    my iMessage history
    my applications
my user experience settings; things like the dock size and behaviour, track pad scroll speed etc etc etc. I'm on the fence with this one since I've plugged in so much sudo code into terminal trying to accomplish things in the past, that I fear theres some settings that shouldn't be restored.
So Apple community, what say thee; what is my best course of action?
    Thank you,
    -Brendon
