Backedup my library to external HD then back to my PC - Itunes wont open

I needed to reinstall my WinXP VAIO due to too much clutter, so i movedall my data and itunes files(music and library data) to an external HDD. After preparing my laptop(same one), i moved everything back. I installed itunes, and pointed the preferences to the right folder in the MY MUSIC folder. However, now itunes won't open unless i have my external HDD connected(which i don't when i'm at work, or travelling)...any solutions? I even tried uninstalling itunes and reinstalling...still looks for the infamous drive G:

Copy the entire iTunes folder to the external.
After you reload your HD, you can leave it on the external if you want.
Simply reinstall iTunes, the hold Shift when starting iTunes.
Select Choose exising library and pick the iTunes library in the iTunes folder.

  • Transfer itune library to external drive then back to PC

In preparation for the re-install of Windows on my machine I would like to save my itune library on an external drive then to reimport it. I have more music than my current iPod can store so can't use it for the transfer and my Pc can only burn CDs the external drive option looks the best...if only I'd know how to!

Be careful you don't make the mistake I did, if your operating system is changing (e.g. XP to Vista) this will only partially work as the paths will be different, you will end up losing your playlists at the very least.
I don't really know any way around this, a couple of people did give me some tips in a previous post that I wrote but Apple deleted it because it was critical, so they are now lost too.

  • Itunes wont open need help backing up music on external hard drive

My itunes wont open after upgraded to 8 , ive uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and quicktime and still wont work. i found a topic to possibly help me but i dont know how to tranfer my music to an external disk drive without being able to open itunes. i am getting so frustrated. please help

A usb hard drive that Windows sees doesn't need software for a simple back up.
Format the hard drive Disk Management, if it doesn't come already formatted, and then drag and drop the iTunes folder and whatever other data you want to back up to it.
What you're describing doesn't sound like something iTunes did. If you're having general install troubles you have another problem with your system and it's time for a little troubleshooting to find out what's really going on.

  • ITunes wont open from my external hard drive onto my new laptop

i have an external hard drive connected to my desktop with all my itunes music on there. but when i connect the external to my new laptop, itunes wont open. it says i dont have itunes support or something like that. and the reason i have my music on the external is so i CAN open itunes from another computer. but this isnt happening right now. someone please help.

yea it is an error 2
    Many thanks.
We'll try a "standalone" installation of Apple Application Support, then. (It may not install, but at least we'll have a better idea of what the problem is, based on any error messages we might get.)
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, does iTunes launch properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us no what it says. (Precise text, please.)

my itunes wont open it tells me that my itunes library was updated by a newer version on itunes but my software is uptodate any one else have this prob?

Look under your Start Menu for Apple Software Update, but before doing that, check the time and date on your computer that it's correct.
It's also saying the iTunes Library .XML file in your iTunes Folder file is new, for some reason, but your songs should be still in the iTunes Folder.
You can move the XML file out and restart iTunes and it shoudl creat another, you lose your playlists and have to import all your music again.

  • Copying saved iphoto library from external hard drive back to Macbook Pro

Please help, I have accidentally managed to permanently delete my iphoto library and by this I mean that I somehow dragged my library into trash and then emptied it.  I don't know how this happend but I quite quickly found out I had done it and shut my computer down.  I have since done a recovery with disk drill and have hopefully recovered most of my photos though I havent had time to look through all the 1000's of photos yet.  I do have a copied version of my library on an external hard drive that I did in 2012 and I have tried to copy this library back to my pictures folder so i at least have my photos up to 2012 back but it is not working.  I have read through some of the threads on here regarding iphoto library back ups and I think the issue might be that the external hard drive is formatted Fat32 and not os extended.
I am hoping someone can help me get this working.  Here are the facts.
    1.  I am running iphoto 11, version 9.2.3 on a macbook pro running os x 10.6.8
    2. The copied iphoto library is on an external hard drive that is fat32 formatted.  I can open the package contents and see the originals folder with all the yearly folders inside and all the numbered folders inside that with the pictures in them, so I know the pictures are there.
    3.  If I try to copy the library folder over to the pictures folder on the macbook i just get a pop up window saying 'preparing to copy iphoto library' and the scrolling bar but the copy doesn't actually start.
    4.  If I try to open the library through iphoto by holidng down the option key, iphoto tells me that the library has to be upgraded but i am reluctant to upgrade the original copy of the library.  I would prefer to copy it first in case anything goes wrong but then i have the problem above that the copy doesn't work
Thank you in advance for any help.

The copied iphoto library is on an external hard drive that is fat32 formatted.
Therein lies the problem.  iPhoto libraries need to be stored, placed on a disk formatted OS X Extended (journaled).  The FAT format doesn't support the complexity of an iPhoto library and can, and more often than not, corrupt a library.
    Try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download the free version of iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed, i.e. in the Pictures folder of your MBP. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Move library to laptop and then back again. . .

Hey. I need to spend some time organizing my IPhoto Library and will be travelling extensively in the next month so I would like to do the work on a Macbook Pro. The current library (12,000 photos) is on our IMac. I want to organize, keyword, event, etc. . .really clean it up, tag everything, etc but not sure how to go about this without losing my mods.
    Can I simply:
Copy the IPhoto Library folder to my Macbook.
Work on the photos while I travel
Copy the Iphoto Library folder from my Macbook back to the IMac?
    Any other thoughts?
    Thanks
    Adam

Yes this will work - but you may have file permission issue so Download BatchMod from
    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:

  • Transferd library to external hard drive...now by itunes only recognizes 10% of my library...help!

i transfrered by library to a hard drive a couple weeks ago.  Now only approx. 10% is recognized by itunes now.  When i go to the external hard drive it shows everything is there, but itunes wont recognize it.  I changed the pathway to look for the media in the external hard drive...no good.  I change it back to the default where i have not deleted the original copies of music and movies.  Same thing, itunes is not recognizing the media.  I suck at this stuff and i am tottally frustrated with it and thinking about returning all my apple stuff or taking a hammer to it.  thanks for any help.

i thought i transfered the whole thing.  I followed the directions on this site for transfering libraries to external hard drives.  So i did what ever was said on there.  I am by no means a tech guy and frustrated by this.
i can make folders but itunes is only giving me an option of about 30 songs...not the entire library that is shown on the hard drive.
I have no idea how to repair a itunes lbirary

  • Itunes wont open because my library was created by a different version?

for a while now, i haven't been able to open itunes. all it would do when i tried to open it was flash the 'terms and agreements window' for a split second, then disappear. after looking over these forums, i took the advice of downloading EWIDO, and ran the program. now it no longer does the terms and agreement thing, but it is giving me the message "the file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."
should i simply uninstall and try installing it again?

Before you reinstall, try moving the 'iTunes Library.itl' file out of the 'iTunes' folder (keep a copy of it somewhere).
iTunes should then create a new, blank database file and you can Rebuild your Library by using the File=>Add Folder command within iTunes.
That will reset your Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played attributes, as well as delete all your playlists, but you can recover your music files into iTunes.
Unles you have a prior copy of the ITL file, that's about all you can do.
