Background Alpha export is arbitrary

It's been some time, so I'm starting over on the Apple boards. (Must have lost my profile)
I've read with interest the many posts regarding this topic before posting. Since I'm a Motion novice, this is the 1st place I look. Here's what's going on...
Using Motion to make those nice supers for my Avid (Mac 2.7) projects. Spent the last week exporting supers, all very nice. Yesterday, the lower thirds only exported with a black background. While I'm certain that there's a setting somewhere I fooled with, I can't get an alpha channel to save my sanity.
Previous to this seemingly arbitrary occurance there was no change in this hardware/software setup. It just stopped exporting w/alpha.
I checked the likely suspects...
Project background color slider set to 0%.
Channel in Canvas set to 'alpha'.
Each file exported using Animation (Millions of Colors +)
I avoid the "current project settings" export checkbox to avoid just such a case, instead I'd rather control the whole export process upon export. FWIW, there is no black background in the Motion project in question
For some reason, I'm unable to export a QT w/alpha channel. Perhaps when I try again, it will. This is a bizarre experience. I've been using alpha channels for decades, usually in 3-d apps and AE. A software codec selection should be honored by the app. Very curious.
Any thoughts?

Thank you for your thoughtful replies, but all the settings suggestions that have been mentioned are already appropriately selected, namely:
Canvas view channel to 'transparent'. (verifies that there is no background color in the composition)
Background Color selection in Project Properties reduced to 0%.
Exporting as Quicktime Movie. Export Options set under Video/Audio... Quality=100%. In Advanced Settings, Compression type is selected 'Animation'. Compressor Depth set to 'Millions of Colors+'. Quality 'Best'.
Under 'Output' pane of Export dialog, Use Current project and canvas settings is not selected. Resolution is Full, Color is selected as 'Color + Alpha'. Premultiply Black is currently selected. (I've tried that both ways to no effect)
The review pane on the right of this dialog verifies my Motion export settings as correct to obtain a Quicktime file with included alpha channel for compositing.
Upon import into Avid, file shows appropriate import processes for both graphic fill and alpha matte. However, imported Motion clip does not exhibit key properties. I employed a workaround, exporting Motion files as Animation Millions of Colors only, and using luma key to make the clip key. I've used several Avid codecs as tests from DV50 to 1:1 uncompressed, with no change in the outcome.
As the beginning of this thread indicates, I already successfully created a number of perfectly fine files using the above carefully-described methodology, which follows the documented procedures to obtain the desired result.
I appreciate the responses thus far. I wish I were just missing a silly button or selection somewhere. I understand that this is usually the case. For now, I hold to the thread title as an accurate description of this situation.

  • Preserving background in Export Layers as Files

Back in the days of CS2 and ImageReady, there was an advanced export layers as files and it had an option of preserving the background while exporting all the visible layers above it. Is there any possible way to achieve this with CS4? I know there is the Export Layers to Files but it generates separate files for every layer and I need each separate image above the background to be on TOP of the background.

    Something like this should work:
// enable double clicking from the
// Macintosh Finder or the Windows Explorer
    #target photoshop
// Make Photoshop the frontmost application
    app.bringToFront();
// Start at the top of the layers stack and select each
    // layer in turn
    for (var i = 0; i < activeDocument.layers.length; i++) {

  • Illustrator CS4 alpha export?

I have to make a DV PAL sized image with transparent background with 3 different logo on it. They have to be in precise position (that's why I made it in illustrator, not PS), with different transparency. I made it in illustrator with "DV PAL" document setup.I tried to export it as .tga 32bit, and had some problems:
it cuts the edge of the document to the first visiable element - in tga export I can't check "use artboards". Even I if I make a document-sized rectangle on top and make a clipping mask.
the worst thing: alpha channel exist, but it's empty black.
How can I do it? (the only supported format from the video server is 32bit tga, so I have to make the file in this format)

Photoshop is a much more appropriate program for this. Photoshop lets you work in precise pixels, which Illustrator does not. Pixels are not even available as a unit in Illustrator. Yes, I know you can select them, but those are not true pixels; they are points (1/72 inch). Pixels have no physical size. Use Photoshop.
Create a new file in Photoshop the size (in pixels) you need the image to be. You can paste the artwork from Illustrator or use File > Place. If you make it a Smart Object you can keep the Illustrator file as embedded artowrk. The image on screen is rendered live, so rotations, scaling, and editing will never degrade the quality of the image.

  • Running report with alv grid in background and exporting to excel

    Hi Guys,
I've created a report program that uses the alv grid. When I run the report in foreground, I can easily export it to excel. However, if I run it in background, then display the spooled report and try to export to excel, it does not put it in excel format (seems to go over as one big column rather than individual columns that are defined in the report). Is there a way to run it in background ,export to excel properly and i have to email also in Excel sheet format.?
    Thanks,
    Gopi.

In background u cannot do a download to excel. you can do is create CSV format file
    or
write a report for output with tabs then call that report using
submit yXXXX exporting list to memory
               and return.
      call function 'LIST_FROM_MEMORY'
        tables
          listobject = report_list
        exceptions
          not_found  = 1
          others     = 2.
and send the report_list to email users

  • Is it possible to get transparent background when exporting to PDF?

When exporting a document to PDF, Pages turns the background white instead of keeping it transparent. I need it to be transparent. Can anyone tell me what to do to fix this?
When I print a document I use stationary that is in my printer. When I want to send the document by email I need to combine my text with my stationary (on the same page). In CS4 InDesign this is really easy with switching layers on/off, but I don't want to use InDesign for my wordprocessing, but Pages. In Pages I can add a background, but I can't switch it on/off. So now I use AcrobatPro 9 to combine my text document with my stationary, adding it as a watermark or background. This does not work with documents I made in Pages since Pages makes the background of a document WHITE when it exports to pdf. Instead it needs to be TRANSPARENT.
By the way: MS-Word gets it right: it keeps the background transparent when making a pdf. But I don't want to go back to Word, I just want Pages to do it right...
Any suggestions how I can make this work? Thanks!

    Hi marchaarman
Pages has an odd behavior, it actually puts 2 white backgrounds in the back of its documents.
This confounds Acrobat which inserts watermarks in front of the 1st background but sandwiched under the 2nd.
MsWord does not actually make a transparent background it just makes the 1 white background, or whatever the paper color may be.
If you want your watermark, you will need to add it in Pages, possibly as a master object in a section template that you can eliminate or add as you want.

  • Issues with black psd files on black backgrounds when exported to PDF.

    Hello there,
I'm having an issue since I upgraded to leopard and moved all my stuff from my old macbook pro (running OSX 10.4) to my new macbook pro (running OSX 10.5). CS3 didn't seem to have any problems before but now when I export an Indesign file with a black background containing a photoshop layered tif with a black background to pdf, the appears to be a big difference between the blacks - the Indesign file's black appears to be a mid grey.
    Any help would be appreciated!
Here's how it all looks in InDesign: http://aycu14.webshots.com/image/48613/2005862333507831436_rs.jpg
But this happens when exported and viewed in Acrobat (or preview etc.): http://aycu02.webshots.com/image/49801/2005871851784365159_rs.jpg

In ID prefs go to Appearance of Blacks
and set both instances to display Blacks Accurately.
You will need to measure the rich black in the Tiff and make a rich black swatch in ID and use that for your book cover. now the blacks will match.

  • How to set textField. Background alpha?

Is there a way to set the alpha of textField. Background to say 30? I already have the following:

All I need is a way to set the background so that it's not 100% opaque?

  • Adobe Ideas - Transparent background without exporting to Illustrator - all via iPad?

I am looking for a way to get a transparent background for my Adobe Ideas drawing without exporting to Illustrator and without leaving iOS.  Perhaps with another Adobe app or another vector app all together. Anyone tried this and had success?
    -Artchemical

Unfortunately, there is no way to get transparent pngs from Ideas. From Draw, however, you can choose "Copy Image to Creative Cloud", and then download the resulting png file from your CC account.
    Hope that helps,

  • Creating a transparent background and exporting as flash

I have been reading about the "Green Screen" and "Blue Screen" functions on my TRIAL version of Adobe Elements 8 and am not sure whether I am able to do what I want to do with the program and thus, am not convinced I should buy it.
I want to record a video of myself in front of a green screen, clear the background, save the recording as a flash that can be incorporated in my home page.  The goal being to have the flash media load up a second or two after someone comes into my websight.  It would play for a predetermined length (15 seconds) and then you would have the option to click on "me" to be linked to more recorded sequences, charts, pictures, statistics etc..
Is it possible to do this in  Premiere Elements?

In PrE 4, there was no Flash w/ Alpha Channel, like there is in PrPro. Check with your version and the Advanced Settings. You want Alpha Channel.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Transparent background  for export to FCP

I have a bunch of little green icons I have animated and I want to be able to drop them in my FCP project as needed. I have searched and read and read.... and read..... I can't seem to figure out how to do this. From reading on my search results I must mess with the alpha channels but I'm really new at this and am not sure how to do this. Can anyone just give me a little quick step-by-step on this?
I have, in Motion, the export settings to Millions of Colors+ and Animation.
    Thanks-

This isn't nearly as intuitive as I think this should be.
You're right, video is really hard.
Looking back over your thread, it's entirely possible the movies have transparency, you're just not looking at it properly, which is, granted, confusing. But alpha channels are not fundamental to video editing, they're special types of clips and you need to learn how to create and use them.
Motion is set by default to render to the Animation codec but may not be set to millions of colors +, the + sign is the alpha.
And, no, sorry, it can't be explained in a simple step-by-step post. There are fifty or a hundred pages on alphas in the Motion documentation. Start with the explanation of the Animation codec.

  • Why do I get a yellow exclamation point with red background when exporting to YouTube using compressor?

Whenever I try to export using FCPX and Compressor 4 I always get something that looks like this:
Any idea why that is? I'm using all default settings on the youtube export, and I'm transcoding it using another mac via compressor.

None of these answers are correct. The error favicon happens in Firefox for Android occasionally. When the browser is offline or on a poor network connection you will get a timeout error page.
We have a bug where the icon persists on reload. With a little time the favicon cache will expire and the favicon will be updated to the correct one.

  • Bug in fireworks CS4 when exporting 24/32bit png with transparent alpha?

    Hi there,
I recently upgraded to CS4 from CS3 and am quite disappointed to find that the png export facility for 24 or 32 bit png's is next to useless on my installation of Fireworks (Vista). I have a colleage who has reported the same behanviour on his mac.
Please see this native fireworks CS4 png file and attempt to export it as 24 or 34 bit png, ensuring the canvas is transparent (it shuold be already)...
    http://www.capitalh.net/demo-bug.png
Viewing in preview mode in CS3 would show the png with its alpha channel indicated by the chequered transparent pattern. Exporting it as such would produce the desired result > a png with a nice blended alpha channel.
Viewing in preview mode in CS4 shows a horrible render of the image on a white background. Exporting the image produces the same result. Please see this link for confirmation:
    http://www.capitalh.net/demo-bug-export.png
Please also see this simpler image, this time using a simple ellipse shape:
    http://www.capitalh.net/demo-bug-export-simpleshape.png
You'll notice that it is not transparent, and the ellipse has not been anti-aliased.
Can anyone shed some light on this behaviour?
Exporting png's as such is something that I do daily at work, and is a basic requirement of an image editting application targetted at web design.
Am I doing something wrong? I've been using Fireworks since 2003 so I'm inclined to think that I'm not.

That's a bit, um, oh never mind. Would've been a rubbish joke anyway.
    Aww...pooh. I love "rubbish" jokes!
If fireworks is unable to export a transparent png at 24bit, then why have the option?
(granted the option is acutally implied, not given)
Also, why the horrible rendering on preview and export?
Transparency for 24-bit isn't an option and isn't implied. Create a FW document with a transparent canvas. Go to File>Image Preview. If you select PNG8 as your export option, then you have drop-downs for No Transparency, Index Transparency, or Alpha Transparency. PNG32 shows the checkerboard where the document is transparent. If you select PNG24, you do not have the transparency options. Transparent areas in your document are set to white, just as they are if you select the JPEG format. Try it.
I don't know why your rendering is horrible. I'd have to see your image.
And also, why all this confusion related to Photoshop, seems Adobe really aren't helping the issue:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/152434
Possibly Adobe thought it was less confusing, as they didn't have to go into the math. However, you do see Linda Rathgeber's answer, that the Photoshop convention is...well...misleading? (I'd call it wrong, but that's just me. ) It's just one other issue to bring into alignment as Adobe works to merge the Macromedia offerings into their line.

  • White background with swf export

How can I apply a swf file created in InDesign into my web page without the white background coming with it. I'm using CS6.
I'm selecting transparent background when exporting. This is so annoying.

When you export the swf there should be an HTML container in the same destination folder. If you view that HTML file in a browser do you get what you expect?
If you are moving  the swf to another HTML page make sure the embed code parameters match. So in the boilerplate HTML ID creates the body tag and the embed parameters both have bgcolor as #999999:
When you move the swf make sure the div tag that encloses the swf has the same bcolor style color as the embed code's bgcolor
