Background applications bogging down the iphone?

Hey everyone, I am a brand new iphone user. I used to own an HTC 8515 and I recall that it kept applications running in the background and eventually it would start to eat up a lot of RAM. There was a task manager however where you could clear all running programs.
I have been lead to believe that the iphone does the same thing, yet there is no task manager function. I know that holding down the home button closes the app permanently, but is there a way to clear all running programs in the background?
Also, with running all the applications in the background, does this become a problem as far as the speed of the iphone etc? I just have this thing where I like to keep my apps closed and running everything smoothly.
Thanks in advance!

This has been all over the forum here. From apps crashing, from iPhones rebooting, and in your case, applications slowing down the iPhone, even known keyboard typing slowdown, opening of apps, etc. it all points to memory, or lack there of.
Holding down the "home" button is supposed to close the application. Holding down the "home" button and "standby" (top) button is supposed to reboot the device to clear out everything.
I can't say that all these things have been confirmed will work 100% of the time. As for myself, I try to close out 3rd party applications by holding down the "home" button and so far it has worked. However, when you are playing around with the phone, opening applications and closing it out , at some point you will bog down the device. Wait approximately 10 minutes and it clears itself out. At least that's what it is supposed to do and I have tested this and it does work.
The problem is that 10+ minutes is sometimes precious for me so rebooting is always an option.
So at this point in time, it's a known issue that everyone is addressing, now just cross your fingers and hope apple has a solution.

For example.  When I share a photo stream with my dad and brother and mother all the photos they are putting in the shared photo stream are taking up space on my iphone!  I'll be out of space in no time at this rate.

I'm having problems with FlashPlayerPlugin and plugin-container. They keep starting up and bogging down the system. This has been a recent occurrance. I've made sure that I have the latest version. I notice the problem when I am opening some applicatio, and it freezes. If I go to Task Manager, I can see the two Adobe apps sucking up CPU cycles. If I end the processes, then the other apps continue. Today, I uninstalled FlashPlayerPluginqand plugin-container. All day since I have had no freezing of an app. What should I do to correct the problem?

Here's an explanation of what those processes are.
Inside Flash Player Protected Mode for Firefox
I'm curious about what you did to uninstall just those.

You're looking at plugin settings. A plugin setting is not an Ultrabeat sample. Wrong place. Look in:

Do deleted iphone apps slow down the iphone?
When I delete an app off my iPhone 4s, does the cookie or "what ever is left of it" slow down the iPhone at all?
    Thanks

No. Apps are all self-contained, so nothing will be left after you delete an app. And even if you leave the app on the iPhone, unless it's running it doesn't slow down your iPod.
This is the iPod touch forum, by the way. Just FYI for future questions.

Is it possible to disable de possibility to shut down the iPhone when a passcode lock is set up?

That is true, and if it is restored to factory settings, and so on.  Find My...works when a device is connected to the internet and logs itself in as long as it has not been "sanitized" so it is not recognized.

  • Application Startup When the iPhone is turned on

Sometimes when I run my application, turn off (not power down) my iPhone, and then turn my iPhone back on the iPhone goes to its home screen (the one that shows all the application icons). Other times it comes back into my application. Does anyone know how to control where the iPhone will go when it comes back on if it is was turned off while running my application? I would like it to turn on and be running my application right where it left off when the phone was turned off.
    Thanks,
    Stephen

I don't actually want my application to run in the background. I just want to to come back up when the user was running my application when they turned off the screen. I have had my application come back up a few times. So I think that there is a way to do this, but I am just not sure why I am seeing inconsistent behavior.
I am creating an application that has one fairly common use case where the user will turn the screen on and off many times over the course of an hour and they will want my application to be the one to come up. They will most likely not be using any other applications during that hour. Also, they will want as minimal distractions as possible since their attention will be else where and just having to find the application icon and start it again would be bad. I have been using this application on other smartphones for a while and this restore feature is very necessary. I have been using it on my iPhone for the last few weeks and when it does not turn on to my app it is very annoying. I have not yet been able to find any documentation that says what makes an app come up when the user turns the screen on and unlocks and what prevents it from coming up.
    Thanks,
    Stephen

  • Do iPhone Apps sloooow down the iPhone???

My iPhone is becoming excrutiatingly slow, recently I missed quite a number of calls because the 'slider' will not work fast enough. Many times it takes from 2-10 seconds for the iPhone to 'wake up' when I press the button on the bottom.
I have quite a number of Apps, and was wondering whether this may have to do with it?
I noticed the slow-down the last time I upgraded from vers. 3.1 to 3.2; hence am reluctant to upgrade to 3.3.
Or could it be the jailbrake/simunlock (Cydia and blackrain) which I had to do in order to use my Austrian iPhone (a two year contract paid) for 2 months in the US. But the sluggishness was there long before the jailbrake.
Any advice would be highly welcome. Cheers, Veit

Many thanks to all three of you above for your advice, much appreciated, and sorry for the late reply.
    Three related questions:
    1. Since the slowdown occurred long before the jailbrake, are there other potential explanations?
    2. Since the jailbrake was only needed to initiate a 'sim-unlock', can I 'delete' the jailbrake, but 'keep' the sim-unlock?
    3. Does anyone have suggestions as to how international iPhone owners use their iPhones in the US when on longer visits; i.e. when using the iPhone with international roaming charges would be prohibitively expensive? Are there any 'plans' without having to sign up for a year or more?
Cheers and thanks in advance. Veit

  • Using an application built with the iPhone SDK for business

    Hi,
I've just finished making an application for a university project I am working on, its designed to show the benefits of using mobile technology in businesses. But I didn't totally think this through. After demonstrating this application to them, they've now asked if they can have this software on there devices to test and evaluate it. I had to say that I honestly don't know.
Is it possible to distribute an application I have made only to those who I choose? More specifically this is an application to be ran on iPod touches, how would I only allow my colleges to install this application?
I've heard of businesses using iPhone for business, but how exactly do they do it?
    Thanks,
    Si.

    Thanks etresoft,
I have a Developers account so testing the device on other iPod's/iPhone's shouldn't be a problem then. But what about distribution on a large scale, if they decided to use this for every employee, 1000+, is there a method to do this?
After researching I have discovered that a business can have an enterprise developers account, would this qualify for installing a private application on 1000+ devices? This will probably never happen, but as this is a uni project, I need to cover all aspects. Including if this is feasibly possible.
    Thanks,
    Si.

  • Grinding down the iPhone headphone jack itself... anyone done it?

Because I just got a first gen iPhone, and this is ridiculous. Sure, I could modifiy every 3.5mm cable or headphone I have, or I could just take a dremel to the freakin iPhone. How close is anything to that jack? If I flare out the opening will I hit anything?
    Thanks!
    - Rob

Here is a picture of the back case showing the jack opening.
It looks quite thin to me and I don't think I would want to risk taking a dremmel to it. I'd go with the other option and buy a simple adapter. You can use the same adapter for all your different headphone.
