Background apps stopped running

iphone 6+ iPad air 2
ios 8.1.1
i find that background apps do no longer run (Fantastical2, Calendars5, Dispatch) no longer retrieve data.
this happened from one instant to the other. Might be related to updating to 8.1.1
The setting to allow them to run in the background is on. They never seem to run. Already restored iPhone. Doesn't help.
any ideas? Somebody having same issue?

I raised the same issue in the Microsoft support forum here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/thread/a2732ddb-7593-4e42-8f8c-43db0a6963b0
I received the following answer: "The issue you are having is actually currently under investigation and Microsoft are working on a fix."

    Hello skkmmayer,
That is probably a lot of stuff you do not want on your iPhone. So this can be handled a few different was. For you current situation, you can delete the apps directly on your iPhone by holding on the app until it starts to jiggle and then tap on the X of all the apps that you do not want. The second thing you can do is before you sync with iTunes, look at the app section on your iPhone to know what gets transfer to it and you can deselect items that you do not want. Lastly, if you download content on your iPad and it is a universal app, you can actually download it directly to your iPhone by looking at your past purchases and download it directly from the App Store. Check out the articles below for more information if need further assistance.

  • I need an app that stops background apps from running when phone is sleeping

i need and app that stops background apps (or maybe all apps) from running when phone is sleeping. thx!

Too bad.  When I had a Droid there was an app that you could set which apps to quit and which to leave running.  Just convenient rather than having to go through the apps bar repeatedly and quit apps individually.  It is not an intrusion to control the phone or quit other running apps... it's my choice... Ooops!  My mistake.  Forgot that I no longer have free will in what I do.  The Company knows better.

  • Does Your Disk Utility App Stop Running Under Mac OS 10.9 - Mavericks

I am using a 2012 MacBook Air running Mac OS 10.9 - Mavericks. The Disk Utility app Verify function stops running, most often during the "Checking Volume Information" part of the test, and does not display any results. The app does not crash: I can run Verify over and over. The app simply stops running. Does anyone else have this problem?

I have a Drobo (2nd Gen) attached to my early 2009 Mac Pro via Firewire and it consistently has this problem with the Disk Utility app on Mavericks.
Maybe there's a timeout on the Disk Utility.
It seems that diskutil and fsck on the command line work.
First, get the device identifier for the volume you want to check:
    bash-3.2$ diskutil list /Volumes/Drobo
    /dev/disk5
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *17.6 TB    disk5
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk5s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Drobo                   17.6 TB    disk5s2
then, use diskutil to  verify the volume:
    bash-3.2$ sudo diskutil verifyVolume /dev/disk5s2
Started file system verification on disk5s2 Drobo
    Checking file system
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume
    Checking extents overflow file
    Checking catalog file
    Checking multi-linked files
    Checking catalog hierarchy
    Checking extended attributes file
    Checking volume bitmap
    Checking volume information
The volume Drobo appears to be OK
Finished file system verification on disk5s2 Drobo
You can also use fsck in debug mode if you like more verbose output. Here I first unmount and then use the raw device:
    root# diskutil umount /Volumes/Drobo
    Volume Drobo on disk5s2 unmounted
    root# fsck_hfs -d -l -f  /dev/rdisk5s2
    ** /dev/rdisk5s2 (NO WRITE)
            Using cacheBlockSize=32K cacheTotalBlock=98304 cacheSize=3145728K.
       Executing fsck_hfs (version hfs-226.1.1).
    ** Performing live verification.
** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
       The volume name is Drobo
    ** Checking extents overflow file.
    ** Checking catalog file.
    ** Checking multi-linked files.
    ** Checking catalog hierarchy.
    ** Checking extended attributes file.
    ** Checking volume bitmap.
    ** Checking volume information.
** The volume Drobo appears to be OK.
            CheckHFS returned 0, fsmodified = 0
    Then remount:
    root# diskutil mount /dev/disk5s2
    Volume Drobo on /dev/disk5s2 mounted
You should really read the fsck man page if you go this route. There are many options and many ways you could accidentally do something you don't intend to do.
    Enjoy!

  • Apps stop running

Does changing the iPod account affect the existing apps?
My nephew got an iPod Touch from my sister in Australia, with a lot of apps and songs and movies for children. It was done under an account which I don't know the password. When my nephew received it, I had to install additional free apps for him, so I used my personal iPhone account. However, after 2 days, all the apps and movies that were bought by my sister in Australia stopped running (the strange thing is that the songs keep playing), while the apps I installed still run! Is this because I changed the account? (If yes, why did the apps keep running for 2 days after changing account?) Is there a way to fix the problem? (PS: no backup has been done to iTunes)

This appears to be a reoccurring problem. See the following link:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2229153&tstart=15
Not happy to hear that buying a new app has stopped working. It appears to be the only fix that Apple has for this bug at this point.

  • Is there a way to keep apps from running in the background?

I just updated to an Iphone 6, with the latest version of IOS.  It's a great product, but for me there is one annoyance.  There are times when my memory gets low.  I find out that it's the apps that are running in the background.  I personally don't use this.  All it does is hog memory.  Then, to close the apps, you have to close each one individually.  I forgot how many apps I have open, I'm of the mindset that when I close the app, that it's "really" closed, not still running in the background.  It would be nice if there was a way to disable this function.  It doesn't seem to serve a purpose for me in the way I use the Iphone.  I just "cleaned up my list of "behind the scenes apps" and I had about 20.  It gets frustrating to have to go to each one to close it.  Any comments or suggestions?

    Some things that might help:
    1. Only the most recently used apps actually occupy memory (used to be the most recent 4, but may have changed in the latest iPhones). After 4 (or so), IOS writes them out of active memory, as it does for even the latest 4 if there's no activity for a long time. So the business of closing all the open apps, apart from the most recent ones doesn't make a difference. Tis article has a good explanation:
    http://www.speirs.org/blog/2012/1/2/misconceptions-about-ios-multitasking.html
    2. There are settings about background app activity that might help:
    - Settings, General, Background App Refresh controls which apps can update their data in the background
    - Settings, Notifications controls which apps can tell you things, which they have to wake up to do.
    - Settings, Privacy, Location Services controls which apps monitor your location - another activity that uses resources
    Hope some of that helps

  • How can I know what apps are running in the background of Q10

My battery is not lasting more than 12 hours even though I'm moderately using it. How can I tell which applications are running in the background?

As of now, the BB10 does not allow any apps to run in the background unless they are baked in the OS or in the active frames. So if an app is not in a active frame, no app is running in the background. try maximizing your battery by switching to wif whenever you have a wifi network.

Has nothing to do with the SIM or master reset.  This has been done to my phone.  The SIM once and the factory reset many times over.  You all just sold us a bad piece of equipment and have us by the tail with our contracts so none of us can get a new phone without paying full price or re-upping our contract.  I just got off the phone last night with your high up tech people (you know, the hidden number we get once we tear into your support people enough), they went into my phone again and still didn't find anything wrong.  I about got fired from my job for not getting my calls and texts.  The BBB has now been contacted, and I feel your end should shore this up for all of us!

  • TS3274 Background apps. How to close apps running in the background.

I just down loaded iOS 7.1. Background apps closer problem. Double clicking home button no longer opens all my running apps. How will I close running background apps? Thank you.

Double-clicking home button should still work.  Unless you changed something, perhaps in accessibility settings?  Try varying the speed.
But there is an alternative:  swipe with 4 or 5 fingers upward off the top, this should get you to the same place.

  • Developing new apps that run in background

Is it still true that 3rd-party developers cannot run their apps in background on the iphone? I have heard rumors that that has changed, or will change. Thanks.

3rd party apps cannot run in the background. Notifications can be used if supported from an external server.
This is not the place to discuss rumors...

  • Certain apps ARE running in background / while iphone is in standby

Well after some quick searching all I see are people asking how they can get 3rd party apps to run "in the background".
I assume that when people are saying "background" they mean (for example) opening up Instant Messanger, starting a conversation, pressing the Home button, going into another app like calendar, and still being able to receive IM's while in the other app. I am quite clear that this is not possible as per the Apple SDK.
My post is about when you open an app (lets say GPSTracker), let it run for a minute, then either let the phone go to sleep on its own, or press the top button to go into standby / lock the phone. It still sends data over the web. ipod is not active or playing (some people say to let the ipod play in order to let things run in background). Is this supposed to happen? Pandora also plays on in the same situation.
Now this does still wear down the battery of course. And I wonder is this could be the cause for a couple of times when my battery drain & my usage stat was ridiculously high. I do not believe I left anything open, but like 5 hours into the day after the phone was unplugged, I looked at the usage and it was higher than the standby stat! The screen was definitely not on though. Maybe thats a topic for another thread.

    Thanks for the reply.
You were saying "... or when the phone is switched off ..."
I'm sorry for the ignorance, but by switched off do you mean hitting the top button? Seems the terms like sleep, standby, off, locked, etc get thrown around I just want to be clear. I 'turn off' my phone while im talking on my BT in the car so I don't end up hitting buttons or hanging up by accident by pressing the top button twice.. once i think locks it and the other turns off the screen. I did the same while trying out the gpstracker app and later looked at the site to see that it was tracking the whole time my phone was 'off' (when i did turn it off, that app was currently running).
