Background auto-save?

Every 10 minutes or so, my IDE stops responding to keystrokes, and my harddrive works overtime. The time delay is considerable. Is there some sort of auto-save happening in the background that I can turn off? If that isn't it, what is it, and can I prevent it? Thx.

  • Feature Request:  Auto-save in Background

Here's a feature request I've submitted.  If you agree, please submit your request to:
    http://www.adobe.com/go/wish/
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
    Background Auto Save
How would you like the feature to work?
Auto-save would work just as it does today, except it would work as a background process, as it already does in Photoshop (without the Autosave popup getting in the way of the edit).
Why is this feature important to you?
The current autosave feature is terrifice and expected in any application today, but the current autosave popup dialog is useless.  It only has a "Cancel" button.  What's the point?  I can't imagine when I would ever want to cancel an auto-save.  And let's say I *did* want to cancel.  The dialog is only on screen for a second or so.  That's not enough time for user interaction, but it is just enough time for my work to be interupted, and for me to potentially hit the enter key as I go to Render something at precisely the same time.

    Hi cscouper2013,
Thanks for taking the time to point out that my BSODs might be a problem with my RAM!  Yes, I'll test it with the program you mention.
    cscooper2013 wrote:
While I'm thinking of it, too.  Sometimes Premiere will do an auto save only moments after I've done a hard save.  That also seems like something to address in the next auto save feature update.  If I have my autosave increment set to 5 minutes, then it seems to me there's no need to do an autosave for another 5 minutes after my last manual save.
I fully agree!  That's something I requested during the CS5 beta program.  I requested that every time a user does a manual save, the Autosave reset its counter.  So for example, if the delay is 10 minutes between auto saves, and the user does a manual save two minutes before the next scheduled autosave, the autosave counter resets to 10 more minutes.  But with the better solution of the current project constantly being saved after each edit, as Jim suggested, this feature wouldn't even be needed anymore.
MonkeyEatsMonkey wrote:If Premiere could "borrow" that functionality, while still retaining a "save as" option for versioning, I feel like we'd have the best of both worlds.  It would even make dynamic linking more seamless, since changes wouldn't require saving. Any thoughts from the community on this?
That would be a perfect solution IMO!  And yes, retaining the 'Save As' option would be very important!
I also like the idea of automatic versioning/backups (could be renamed to 'versions' since with a constantly saved project file, automatic 'backups' would no longer be necessary.
To resume, based on what has been discussed in this thread, I believe these would be the ideal saving options in Premiere:
Autosaving of every edit in the background without slowing down editing performance (as suggested by Jim).
Ability to create a user defined number of automatic backup versions, by setting maximum number of versions and time intervals (as is currently the case with Premiere).
In other words, the current project file would constantly be updated as the user edits.  The automatic backups/versions would be created at user defined intervals.
Users would retain the ability to create a copy of the current project at any moment through the 'Save As' and 'Save a Copy' commands that already exist in Premiere.
Pop-up Auto-save dialogue boxes and the 'Save' command would be a thing of the past!
IMO, this would truly give us the best of both words as MonkeyEastMonkey suggests: constant saving as per FCPX, with the comprehensive versioning options Premiere currently offers.
    Anything missing?

Upgraded to Lion. Numbers is stalling to auto save after every keystroke. Isn’t auto save supposed to run in the background?

It's supposed to save when the processor isn't triggered by the user. If you type slowly, time between two strokes may be sufficient to allow it to start the save process.

  • Auto-save in Logic 8

    Hey Guys
I've been trying to find an option for auto-save in Logic (and to set how often it does this)... but I can't find anything...
Does it just do auto-save in the background? Or is there no auto-save feature?
It's easy to forget to keep saving in a long session and would be nice to know Logic does it for you!!
    Cheers
    Mike

I'm sure that Logic will never need auto save.
the reason is: Logic have a .crash save function...
it works great... (if you don't use 3rd party plugs with false Audio Units validation Pass.
I'm a Logic user from the Notator version...
    Auto save is dangerous...
the only usefull thing should a Fix with save before Crashing happen
Auto save is not "intelligent solution"
*Logic 9 should be comes with an intelligent way to save function that works ONLY WHEN AND IF NEEDED*
I'm sure that Logic 8.1 will solve the .crash issue with 3rf party plugs that are intentionally developed with only AU version bugs.
this is another of the "milion" fermusic ideas about sh*t auto save dangerous and *really obsolete* function
No Auto save... *vote for an intelligent way to automatic save function*

  • CS6 Auto-Save: 1 step forward, 1 step back

I have done a little testing with the auto-save, and there is some progress with CS6 - especially in the area where earlier versions would stop playback or scrubbing to fire off an auto-save.
It looks like the auto-save does not stop playback or scrubbing on the timeline anymore.  It will stop you from other operations such as moving an audio slider or other non-critical mouse clicks.  I tested with 1 minute intervals, and it appears that it won't auto-save during playback or scrubbing in the background, and will wait until the next interval after playback has stopped until it saves. (Instead of taking the very next possible moment after playback has stopped to makeup for the save)  This seems like it could create the possibility that if you are playing back or scrubbing during multiple interval moments, you could have a long period where there are no auto-saves - especially if you set the interval to a high number.  Like I said, I only tested with a 1 minute interval, so maybe this functions differently if you save every 10 or 20 minutes.  Maybe then it will do an auto-save right after playback has stopped if it has been awhile.
The step back is that if you hide PPro, (I'm on a Mac, btw) instead of just bouncing the dock icon during an auto-save like previous versions, it will actually bring PPro to the front and block out/cancel anything else you are doing on your machine.  How annoying!  I can't figure out the reason to have it function like this.  If it is simply hidden behind other windows, it does not do this, instead only brings to the front the small auto-save progress bar - It only happens if you hide the appplication.  For example, if you are moving back and forth between PPro and AE, you could be working away on a comp in AE and suddenly PPro jumps to the foreground to let you know it did an auto-save.  Since I have 2 monitors, I like to hide apps that I'm not working in to hide pallettes and other windows so I can have my desktop back.  Seems like the solution for now is to not hide PPro ever and to do a proper save more often to avoid the issue of potential long periods of no auto-saves. (And submit a bug report?)
Anyways, long post for a potential trivial thing, but for those who care about this, it is a change.  Anyone else experiencing this?

    Jim,
Exactly, and that is what the "1 step forward" is with CS6.  It drove me crazy when Auto-Save would interrupt playback.  I was suggesting that it would be a better option that if you are playing back during an auto-save interval, it should take the very next opportunity to fire off a save, like maybe after hitting stop when there is a moment of downtime.  However - in my testing - it looks like it skips that interval completely and waits for the next one.  So, if you have it set to save every 10 minutes, but are playing back your timeline during each of those 10 minute intervals, it will never auto-save even if there are large stretches of time in between when you are doing nothing.  It seems like it could be more intellegent about when it saves, and do it quieter in the background.

  • Auto Save and Versions

Where can I control Auto Save and Versions? I can't find it in System Settings.
Can I control it by terminal commands?
    On http://www.apple.com/macosx/what-is/ Apple claims:
Versions creates a new version of a document each time you open it and every hour while you’re working.
    While here http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/auto-save.html Apple claims:
Forget about manual saving and forge ahead with confidence. Auto Save in OS X Lion automatically saves your work, while you work, during pauses and every five minutes. And Lion saves changes in the background so you're never interrupted with progress bars.
So I wonder every five minutes or every hour? Would be nice to make sure on each Mac itself whether it auto-saves every five minutes or every hour and to actually allow its user o set the frequency.

It does both. It saves your work in the current version every 5 minutes. Every hour, it creates a new version of the document.
I haven't searched for any version settings, yet.

  • Auto-Save Option pleaseee

Please we need an autosave daemon or similar, so the work can be saved in case of tragedy. Photoshop crashes from time to time and if you forgot to save it's so frustrating... I've just lost 2 hours of hard work and it's not my first time..
Hope you implement something similar like the Auto-Save in Microsoft Word...
    Cheers

Have you done a Forum search on the issue?
Because it has come up previously and some people think it would not really be a good idea.
Suppose Photoshop were to start saving several-GB-files where the saving process might take several minutes (probably the only halfway plausible reason for working without saving for considerable lengths of time) in the background – as a laymen I would expect this could cause a sudden and considerable drag on Photoshop’s performance.
But then I could be wrong …
I've just lost 2 hours of hard work and it's not my first time.
If it’s not the first time I wonder why you still work such lengths of time without saving.
Anyway, there’s one comfort: One is usually much faster doing an image the second time.

  • PP CS6 Project freezing on Auto-Save and Save-As.

    Hi,
I have a project that I've been using every month to solely to create titles and just yesterday a bug showed up....whenever it goes to auto-save the project, PP freezes and I have to force quit it. I tried moving the project to another location and had the same problem. I also tried  doing a save-as to create another coply of the project and that freezes PP as welll...I am however able to save the project, just not auto-save or save-as. Thoughts??

There is the problem with that sentiment. I don't like the loss of "save as" either. I think the new save/duplicate paradigm has more steps and is poorly implemented to boot. Yet, people complain far more about Versions and Autosave than they do about "save as"? Why on earth would anyone complain about Autosave? There is no user interface change involved with Autosave. It is entirely in the background. If you don't like Autosave, you are free to randomly delete files from your machine and from Time Machine if you want. I don't see what the point of that would be, but it would give you the same effect of not having Autosave. There is more a user impact to Versions, but it still a really cool feature. Why would you not want to have access to old versions of your document? It isn't going to eat much disk space. The last time someone complained about disk space usage by versions I calculated that it would take 38 years for them to run out of space due to Versions. If you don't want to use Versions, don't click on the Versions tools. Problem solved.
I don't want people lumping clear losers (like no more "save as") with clear winners like Autosave and Versions.

Auto Save and Versions are not working in pages or numbers.  I've worked on a project for over five minutes when I "Xed" out the drop down box opened up and asked if I wanted to save.  Any ideas why?  Also, how do you open up versions?

  • QuickView (run in backgroud) - How to auto save data to local file

I am using Quickview to extract data. I want to run the Quickview query in background and auto save the data extracted into local file (ASCII file). Currently when I specify File Store (as my Output Format) and enter a file name (e.g C:\Temp\test.asc). Upon completion of extraction there is a little window popup that need me to select data format (e.g DAT, ASC) and click <Transfer> button to proceed to save data into local file.
Is there a way that I can save data into local file without have to manually select ASC data format and click <Transfer> button. I will not be  able to schedule my QuickView query to run in background if I can't resolve this problem.

  • Auto-save doesn't stop!

    Hello,
I'm on AE on adobe CC. While I'm stabilizing shots (using the warp stabilizer), the auto-save function always starts saving my project (during the background analyse), even though I've 1) disabled the auto-save in the preference or 2) put it on every 600 minutes! It forces me to crash the software, making my life unbearable :-)
I've never had that problem with CS6. Am I missing something? Is there another form of autosave? Or is it just that Adobe have lost it??
    Thank you for helping,
    Chris

ALSO EXACTLY the same problem. Autosave kicks in (even when switched off) during stabilisation process and freezes AF.
Trying to solve it for a week now. Nothing has worked. I have had to do the stabilisation work on my Mac laptop(no issue there) instead of my new MacPro late 2013 model, OS 10.1, 64 GB Ram, FirePro D700 graphics. AF 13.1.1 Very frustrating.
I have switched off autosave in preferences, re-installed AF, given more RAM to secondary apps, trashed preferences... same result.
I don't know what to try next? I would love to know if anyone has solved this problem.

  • Use Auto Save? If so, what settings?

Bob Dix recommended disabling Auto Save in PP CS4 about a year ago on Creative Cow. He said issues had been report there.
What should I do? I lost the assets somehow for the first half of a 30 minute project, went to the Auto Save file only to discover that PP's default is only 5 auto saves every 20 minutes. Fortunately, I was able to get the first half of project back by importing a backup I made the previous day and importing it into the affected project and copying assets (wondering if it's wise to put everything in a new project in case the project file is corrupted).
Auto Save sounds like a good idea. If you agree, what settings for it would you recommend? I "Ctrl-S" after just about every change I make in the timeline. but I never know what might be happening at the beginning of the timeline if I'm working at the end--accidents like a mouse hanging up while I'm trying to drag and drop an asset on the timeline and unwittingly damage assets at the beginning of the timeline (Why do mice hang up, anyway? Is it perspiration on the hand? Memory getting stressed? Having Bridge, AE, and PP open at the same time? I've got 12GB, but it's so annoying.).
    Your expertise is greatly appreciated.
    Paul

    Paul,
I wonder what prompted Bob to suggest not using AutoSave. I have not heard a bunch of negative reports, when it's configured correctly, and then used properly. I leave the default setting of 5 AutoSaves @ 5 min. intervals. However, I also use Save, Save_As and Save_As_a_Copy in many Projects. They are all similar, but there are differences. This ARTICLE will give you some background. When you know how each differs, you can then determine a workflow, that suits you and your needs.
If I am doing a particularly difficult Project, I might also "archive" some of the AutoSave folders and files, with a Copy, just for safe keeping. However, with the right combo of the various Save options, one also will have those extra AutoSaves too.
Now, it does seem that Adobe has changed the AutoSave functions, but I have not been able to confirm this. At one time, AutoSave was pretty smart. If one did not do any editing, AutoSave would not be invoked at the time interval, only with editing and changes. Somewhere along the way, it seems that AutoSave now works ONLY with the interval, so that if one leaves the machine for an hour, they end up with 5 duplicate AutoSave files in the folder. Personally, I liked the "old way" far, far better. Who needs 5 (or whatever is chosen) duplicate PRPROJ files? Maybe something in the code forced Adobe to "dumb down" AutoSave?
As a side note, you talk about loosing some Assets. I have a policy - never use original Assets in my Projects - only Copies, with the originals on my NAS. Capture files from miniDV tape is an exception, as I do not reuse tapes, and could always re-Capture, if necessary. Also, remember that the PRPROJ file does not contain any media (Titles are a limited exception), and ONLY links to that media.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Re: auto save not working with microsoft office on OS Lion

Is there anyone else having issues with the auto-save/versions not working with Microsoft office on the OS Lion Upgrade?

It seems (from some testing I've just done) that:
    1. It's not an explicit choie or preference - it's just there, in the background, invisible
    2. Your textedit document has to have been saved once (i.e given a name), or you've reopened a previously saved document
If those conditions are met, Textedit will keep the doc saved.
    My test was:
    Open existing docuement
    Make changes
    Wait a few seconds
    Quit Textedit
Reopen Textedit - and there's the doc with all the changes.
I ran the test again, quitting Textedit immeditaley I had made the change - and it saved the change successfully.
    Hope that helps

  • I have a site I do business with. They do not authorize passwords unless a dealer. I do no have on an auto save function, as I want to type my passwords in ea

I have a site I do business with. They do not authorize passwords unless you are a dealer. I do not have passwords on an auto save function, as I want to type my passwords in each time for security. My password for this site will only work a short WHILE, AND THEN it will not be recognized by the site and I cannot get in.
Then I must contact the company to reset or clear it manually on their end so it can be reset. They always give me the SAME SETUP PASSWORD to use. I use it, then I RESET PASSWORD on my end. The computer seems to remember my user NAME AT least on my computer as it comes up once I start typing the username in. They SAY IT is a settings issue on my end. I do not have this problem on any other site even THOSE WITH higher SECURITY. I need to FIX the issue OR may LOSE ACCESS To the site as is very aggravating for them and they say other have had the problem but usually with chrome but never constantly.I am not that computer literate ,but my husband is an IT Security professor and textbook writer but says doesn't really know Firefox. I do not really want to store passwords on computer as have been hacked several times. He and I do not understand some of the terms mentioned. since it is not a problem with other sites it should be fixable. Please me help using terms I or my husband can understand without having to give Firefox all my passwords. I would be happy to set up something different just for this one site if I need to but need easy instructions. Have cleared the cookies before but it still happens. What setting do I need to change or set to fix this? the other questions that come up seem very different and do not apply. FF 22 now but happened w other FF versions.

I'm having a little trouble understanding the part about your password having to be reset. Why is that happening??
    Let's start with Firefox's settings:
    (1) You can configure the password manager feature on this tab:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Security
There is a checkbox to enable/disable the feature.
There also is a "Saved Passwords" button to review and remove any passwords you do not want Firefox to keep.
That tab also has a feature to set a Master Password so that no one can use your saved passwords without knowing the Master Password. You may need to exit Firefox in order for Firefox to ask for that again.
    Related articles:
    * [[Password manager - Remember, delete and change saved passwords in Firefox]]
    * [[Use a Master Password to protect stored logins and passwords]]
    (2) Site-specific permissions
If you want to use the password manager for other sites but NOT a particular site, you can configure that in the Permissions Manager.
In a new tab, type or paste '''about:permissions''' in the address bar and press Enter.
After the page loads, use the search box in the upper left corner to narrow down the list to the site you want to configure. Highlight the site on the left side, and on the right side, choose Block under Store Passwords.
    (3) Form autocomplete suggestions
Separate from passwords, Firefox remembers entries you've made into forms (in most cases) and lists the matching ones below the form field in a drop-down.
To clear a suggestion, press the down arrow key to highlight it and press the Delete key.
To turn off this feature, see this article: [[Control whether Firefox automatically fills in forms with your information]].
To review and selectively edit or delete form history entries, you need an add-on. For example, you could try this one: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/form-history-control/
