Solid backgrounds are one approach, but here's a test that demonstrates gradient problems (or not) with more realistic™ display contents:
*1) Download a smallish, colorful test image and drop it on your desktop. For example:*

*2) Control-click on the desktop and select: "Change Desktop Background..."*
*3) Click on "Choose Folder" and navigate to the test image on your desktop.*
*4) Set the background mode combo-box to "Tile" (if it's not that way already).*
*5) Compare the image at various regions of the screen. If you used the test image above, pay particular attention to reflections on the Bailey's bottle, the width of the gray-scale's transition region, and overall color saturation.*
My 20" failed this test dismally -- and the test pattern helped convince several geniuses at the local Apple Store that my 20" display had a serious problem.
BTW, I carefully avoided any discussion of the 20" display's off-axis performance. IMO, 'viewing angle' is a minor issue -- and raising it would only confuse/dilute legitimate complaints about seriously "washed out" colors near the bottom of (some?) 20" displays.
So, I traded-in the 20" and replaced it with the 24" -- and the jury's still out on that one. My new 24" also has a noticable left-to-right brightness gradient (very evident with solid-color backgrounds); however, it doesn't show a trace of the "washed-out colors" problem that was conspicuous on my 20" unit.
For reasons I can't explain, images in all areas of the display appear to retain excellent detail, contrast, and color saturation -- they differ only in absolute light intensity. The 24" display passed my "tiled images" test with flying colors. To my (non-professional) eye, there were no discernable differences in image quality anywhere in the screen. Maybe the 24" panel has wider dynamic range or somesuch -- but that's gettin' deep into subjects that I don't pretend to understand.
In any case, the 24" display is vastly better than my 20" -- and possibly tolerable. The trade-in transaction appears to have re-started the clock on returns, so I have a while to 'test-drive' it.

It is very likely you can go to Mavericks but you may as well go straight to Yosemite.   However, unless the matter is urgent I would wait a couple of months until it gets to Yosemite 10.10.2.
You realise of course that your current OS is the last one that can work with Rosetta based programs so if you have bought Office or some Language courses etc you may have to buy new versions.   This table will help you decide which apps you may lose by upgrading.

right bit of a dilemma
i have a 20" imac alu 2.4 c2d 4gb ram 320gb hdd and attached is a samsung syncmaster 940bw which i have just bought off the cheap from pcworld UK
what i want to do is use the samsung for viewing the video im editing, i know i can drag the canvis windows= over to the ext monitor but thats not what im looking for i want to use it like they do in pro studios so that it shows me the video with a black background safe zones, TC, etc
is there any settings i need to change or do i need extra kit etc any help and advice will be taken

the syncmaster is a computer monitor with VGA inputs and not a PAL video monitor which is what you should have purchsed.
If you have to buy on the cheap, but a flat panel TV with a PAL composite video input and an ability to turn off all the electronic enhancement features.
Best of all buy a JVC preofessional TFT PAL monitor.

Since the new library gives you the same message log into another user account on your Mac and see if you can run iPhoto without getting that message. If you get that message there also a reinstall of iPhoto seems indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/ folder,

Why does the background on my 24" iMAC turn light blue?

I find that frequently the background on my 24" iMAC turns blue. This happens when using Word and Firefox. Any suggestions on likely cause?

I'm having this problem, too. At least it may be the same thing. What I've determined is the screen gets zoomed in somehow (accidentally repeated tapping?) this am it happened again while I was hitting snooze for the 10th time lol
Anyway, it's happened several times since buying the phone 2wks ago. The whole screen is water, but if I persist in sliding I can find images blown up. I always have to shut down and that's hard to do with the screen so large, because you can't easily get to the power off slide.
Is there something I can do to fix this or do I need to take it back?

Which app is the best for viewing documents without sliding while zooming?

I have many novels saved under *.htm, doc and pdf.
I'm using Quick Office, but when I zoom in, I have to slide the screen from side to side just to watch the whole things, which make my eyes feel very tired.
So I need your help about which app is the best for viewing documents without sliding while zooming, I mean, when you zoom in, you just have to slide vertically to see the whole documents, and don't have to slide horizontally.

All running on Wine 1.1.7, Oblivion is running around 150 mods, and QTP3, Body mods, High res texture packs for the character skins, with HDR lighting. As you can see the FPS does not change, it fluctuated between 19-20 on all three runs.
Especially with Dual cores, you will find that games do not loose FPS even with things like a lightweight music player running in the background. Windows scheduler simply was not made for that kind of thing, and benifits alot more from a lower number of background processes. I wont say linux does not benifit, but with Dual cores and CFS, it is not really noticable anymore.
Wait, does that mean you have better performance while you are running more stuff? Does the desktop manager handle graphics better?

The only files you should need are the Dock application as well as the Dock's preferences. These should be in your Library folder. Before replacing the dock application, try removing the "com.apple.Dock.plist" file from your library's preferences folder. Then restart the dock (logout and log back in) and hope that clears everything. If not, and it's some aspect of the program that's been messed up, then replacing it directly should fix the problem. Do you have a TM backup? You should be able to get it from there with no problem, but if not then getting it from another Mac could also work.

The important thing here is:
background-position:top center;
this will center the background horizontally.
But this is just the beginning, because if your background
gets centered, your content will be off,
since your content is not centered (it's in a Layer). Using a
background for page layout is a bad
idea anyways. For example if I increase the text size in my
browser preferences, your text content
goes beyind the bottom limit of your background.
So in short
background image as layout: bad idea
using Layers: bad idea
I suggest you study css and html a little bit, don't use
Layers, use regular divs and tables, use
Design view (no layout view) and look at your code as much as
possible as you go and experiement.

Downloaded backgrounds for Photobooth - Photobooth now crashes

I wasn't sure where to post this question. Several months ago I downloaded extra backgrounds for Photobooth from the apple website. The original photobooth backgrounds work, but as soon as I click to view the new backgrounds, Photobooth will crash. I was unsure about what to do, so I tried to delete the application from my downloads file. This did not solve the problem. Now I cannot remember the name of the file that I downloaded and I do not know how to fix my Photobooth. How can I permanently delete the downloaded backgrounds and fix my photobooth when I do not know the name of the downloaded material?

By going to the place you downloaded the backgrounds from. View each one. One of them should jog your memory. Redownload to find out if it also comes with an uninstaller & use it.
If it does not come with an uninstaller, do not install. Use AppCleaner to uninstall the app, repair permissions and restart your computer.

Old data showing in background app view

When double tapping the home button for the iPhone 6 plus, iOS 8.1.2, I am having issues where apps display old data on all the background apps that pop up. For example, if I have safari open in the background and I want to switch to it from springboard, i double click home to bring up all background apps, and I'll find safari with a webpage that displays old history. However when I click into safari, it'll refresh to the correct/present webpage.
This will still happen after deleting all browser history and settings. I will still see old websites pop up in safari, in the background app view. Even after erasing and restoring factory settings, this problem still exists with the background app view. Not only with safari. Is this being looked into?

I believe that the icon shown in the recents list is a sort of snapshot of the last time the app was open. I don't believe they are supposed to refresh in the background, especially as most apps are in a suspended state when not being uses.

How to export a transparent image background for the web

I have made a mock up webpage in adobe fireworks 5. I am now in the process of using the slice tool to cut up the seperate parts and export them to dreamwever.
My question is this: how do i slice the images in such a way that the background is transparent .
Also, when exporting the image that i have just made trasparent, what do i need to do to expot it as a transparent background.

When you're ready to transfer your Fireworks layout to DW select FILE > Image Preview. In Options select Format PNG8 and beneath the color grid change the No Transparency dropdown to Alpha Transparency.
Click the Export button, name your file, choose the destination location, and in the dropdowns select Export > HTML and Images, HTML > Export HTML File, Slices > Export Slices, Pages > All Pages. (Also some choices may be handy for you in the Options button including Background Image for the exported file.)
PNG can be used, just as JPG, TIFF, PICT, BMP and GIF, all of which are in your Options > Format dropdown list.
Generally JPG is better for files that have gradients, GIF for simple images and text, but they don't do transparency so the larger PNG file is necessary for that.

ISight (hooked to PB) in Baby's room for viewing on net - POSSIBLE?

Hello, any help would be greatly appeciated.
I have a 15" PowerBook, and I am interested in purchasing an iSight camera, so I can plug it into the PB, and leave the cam/computer in our newborn's room so that the grandparents, or mom and dad can see the baby on the internet while at work/home. Is this possible?
This would only be for viewing purposes - not for communicating, since the viewers don't have webcams. I guess it's like creating a live broadcast on the net, which can be viewed at any time by a relative.
Is the only way to broadcast live video through iChat? I seem to remember some kind of hidden application stored on the mac (capture app???) that would allow you to post live images/videos on the net, and even has a web link.

Where can I get a new hard drive for my intel imac? **** thing dumped, less than 3 years old.

This is my first mac and the **** hard drive crashed in only 2+ years and of course the waranty is expired. Can I replace the hard drive with any 3.5" replacement or do I need something special. And if I do where can I get it? I didn't see anything specifically for an intel imac at apple store. I don't want to pay apple to install it, already spent enough money on this disappointing purchase.
