Background in Keynote

Dear all, I just migrated from powerpoint 04 into keynote 08 to create my presentations.
very nice animation in keynote, however, I couldn't find how to change the background of the slides.
Each time i have to import the image which I want to use as background, send to back, and resize it myself. Is there a more convenient way to use a image as the background of the slides?
Thanks

If you apply the changes to the Master Slides, then each time you use that slide, you won't have to re-apply the background. If you instead want to change the background for ALL slides...
Then you'll do it in the above tab of the inspector. Just click on "Color Fill", set the Fill to "Image" and then choose the image.

  • Creating transparent backgrounds in Keynote for export as titles in FCP

    I am creating titles in Keynote and exporting them into Final Cut. I was wondering if anyone knows how to make transparent backgrounds so I can overlay the titles on videos. I have tried "include transparency" but have been unsuccessful. I haven't found any help files to address this situation.
    Many thanks

    1. make sure your slide background is set to NONE, no color, no image
    no nothing
    2. Check the Include Transparency check box when you choose the
    QuickTime export
    3. Choose Custom from the formats pop-up
    4. Click the Settings button
    5. Choose Animation or PNG from the pop-up (it probably says Sorenson)
    6. Choose Millions of Colors+ from the depth pop-up
    Make any other quality or frame settings, and export it. You SHOULD get
    a movie that has a transparent background.

  • Changing the background? (Keynote for iPad)

    Hi! I can't seem to figure out how to change the slide background/theme for the overall presentation.
    Is this feature unavailable on the iPad version?
    Thanks!
    Chela

    The iPad version of Keynote does not have a "background" per se.
    What you need to do is place an image or colored shape on a blank slide, size it to fit and then clone the slide by copying that slide and pasting as needed in the Slide Navigator to reuse the background. Not the greatest solution, but Keynote for iOS has its limitations.
    If you already have a slide with objects on it, place the image or colored shape on the slide, resize it to fit then, with the object still selected, Format (brush menu) > Arrange > Send to back
    Good Luck.

  • Changing Cell Background in Keynote '08 Tables

    Hello,
    I am wondering if it is possible to change an individual cells background color in a presentation. My vision is that if the table is up that I would be able to click and see one single cell change from white to blue lets say. Is this possible?

    I will start by saying that I am using Keynote '09, but this should work the same in '08.
    You can't use any actions to change the color of a chart cell, but there is an easy workaround.
    Make your chart and make sure that you have the cell background set to White. Then duplicate the chart and change the background color of the cells you want changed. Line it up with the first chart and send to the back. Then go the the Action Tab of the inspector (3rd Tab) and create a build out of disappear to the chart with all white background. When you click it will look like you colored the the cell.

  • How to change texture backgrounds in Keynote text box

    I want to know if its possible to change the texture background image of a text box, keeping the background textured but in a different color.
    Sequence:
    Create a text box
    Add text
    In the inspector select "image fill"
    The result is a textured background in a particular color.
    Thinking I might be able to replace the image with another textured image but of a different color I click on "Choose" and a dialog opens that is located at the "pictures" folder in the home folder.
    This makes sense but I wonder if there is a group of textured images somewhere to use as backgrounds?
    And if so where are they located?
    I've searched around and can't find same.
    Perhaps the textured background is unique to the theme.
    Thanks

    Most of the textures are unique to the theme BUT try this:
    1. Put a chart on your slide
    2. Click on the Chart Colors button in the Chart Inspector
    3. See if any of the chart options match what you're looking for and hit Apply All in the chart colors window
    4. Click once on one of the bars in the chart to select it
    5. Choose Copy Style from the format menu
    6. Click on your text box and choose Paste Style from the format menu
    7. Go to the Graphic Inspector and change the fill type from Image Fill to Tinted Image fill
    8. Play around with the color/transparency settings for the Tinted image function by clicking on the box that looks like it's sliced in half diagonally.
    no idea if that's what you're looking for, but you can come up with some fun fills I think.

  • How to edit Theme Backgrounds in Keynote?

    Stuck with a little conundrum:
    I'm trying to edit the background of the Crayon Line theme (but it is the same for other themes) - More specifically I'm trying to move the actual black and red horizontal crayon line. The problem I have is that I haven't found a way to select it.
    It is not part of the actual background image, because the line stays after you change the background 'image fill' (inspector > slide > appearance > background) to none.
    Any ideas?

    Go to the View Menu and then Show Master slides. Then one the master slide you can delete, move or change the line. You will have to do it for every master that you use.

    For a theater production I am creating a slide show. On some of the slides I would like to import some moving snow (created with a particle generator in Motion). You could do it with an image sequence but AFAIK there’s no support for alpha channels in video.

  • Keynote background opacity does not change

    Hi all,
    I want to make a transparent background on on Keynote'09 5.1.1 (1034). The background colour opacity does not change for some unknown reason.
    This is the way I do it: open keynote - select a white or black theme - open the inspector - go to slide inspector - go to appearance - set background as colour fill - double click on the slide icon on the bottom of the inspector to open the colour inspector - set opacity to 0% - close the colour inspector - open it again and the opacity is 100% again.
    Please help!

    ilyasmussin is right. There is a way to change the opacity level of a background image in Keynote.
    This discussion is not about changing the opacity of an image, it is about how to create
    a transparent background, refer to the the original post quoted below.
    I am trying to export a video with a transparent background. in Keynote.
    I explained in my last post that the background layer can not be  made transparent in Keynote as there is no alpha channel in Keynote. The background layer will always be filled with either an image or a colour matte.
    What you describe, is changing the opacity of an object, which the original poster knows how to do.
    This Keynote canvass should explain the difference between opacity and transparency, the same image is placed on an orange object with different properties applied:
    1 - 0 % transparency and 100% opacity
    2 - 100 % transparent background using an alpha chanel created in Photoshop,
                   and 100 % opacity
    3 - 0 % transparency and 50% opacity
    4 - 100 % transparent background and 50% opacity

  • Keynote 3: Transparent Animated GIF Problems

    I've been trying to get an animated GIF with a transparent background to run in Keynote, but it's giving some disastrous results.
    I produce the animation by rendering the frames as PNG (with alpha channel) in MegaPOV 1.2.1. Then I use the convert utility from ImageMagick 6.2.9 to make them into an animated GIF.
    When I drop the animated GIF into Keynote 3.0.2, the first frame shows fine (with transparency and all). But when I animate it, the background goes red (the main color in this particular movie) and some trace of the previous frames stays. It seems like:
    1. Rather than displaying the GIF frame-by-frame, each frame is getting layered onto the previous frames.
    2. Keynote doesn't like the alpha channel for some reason.
    Problem 1 is also present if I open the GIF in Preview (is that supposed to be the correct behavior of an animated GIF?). Problem 2 seems to be Keynote-specific.
    Any suggestions for a work-around on this? The animated GIFs work fine if rendered without the alpha channel, but it'd look so much better with transparency!
    iMac 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    MegaPOV doesn't have a GIF output option. The choices are PNG, Targa, PPM, and hdr (not familiar with that last one). I don't know if PPM even has alpha-capability.
    So in some way, I have to convert PNG to GIF. The tools I have to do this are ImageMagick and Gimp. I tried them both, then viewed the results using several programs. Results are tabulated below -- (1) means that problem 1 from above was apparent (ie, parts of the previous frames were visible under the current frame); (2) means that problem 2 was visible (ie, the transparent parts took on some background color).
    If I didn't know how to change the default white background in the program, I couldn't tell whether problem (2) occurred, since the movie made with Gimp had a white background in Keynote.
    Using ImageMagick 6.2.9 to convert PNG->GIF and animate GIF:
    * viewing with Safari 2.0.4 : (1), can't tell for (2)
    * viewing with Preview 3.0.9 : (1), can't tell for (2)
    * viewing with Firefox 2.0.0.3 : (1)
    * viewing with Keynote 3.0.2 : (1), (2) -- alpha goes red
    Using Gimp 2.2.11 to convert PNG->GIF and animate GIF:
    * viewing with Safari : (1), can't tell for (2)
    * viewing with Preview : (1), can't tell for (2)
    * viewing with Firefox : (1)
    * viewing with Keynote : (1), (2) -- alpha goes white
    I only converted the first few frames using Gimp, since I was doing it by hand.
    All of this makes me wonder whether I'm dreaming the impossible, since problem (1) is universally present. It also makes me pretty sure that problem (2) is Keynote-specific.
    If there are any other tools that will convert/animate GIFs on a modern Mac, I'd love to hear about them. My UNIX-y tools seem to be failing me here. The Mac tools I remember from "back in the day" -- GIFBuilder and GIFConverter -- seem to have been abandoned around the beginning of Mac OS X. GIFBuilder won't even load my files, and GIFConverter still lacks alpha support in PNG.

  • Simple shape morphing in Keynote...?

    Hello,
    I am seeking help with what should be a simple task (I reckon), but which is turning out not to be...
    I use Keynote 9 for my teaching presentations. I need to show semi-transparent coloured regions – superimposed onto maps – that change through time, and I would like to make that change into a fluid animation: simple semi-transparent blobs that change shape. That's all! Simple, huh.
    Here are the problems...
    - The shapes are irregular (so Magic Move won't do it)
    - Keynote 9, so no Flash
    - I can get Adobe Illustrator to generate Flash animations and then I should be able to convert them with VideoMonkey into .mp4s... except that VideoMonkey utterly refuses to convert the .swf files generated by Illustrator...  No idea what's going on there... Tried everything I can think of, no go.
    - Downloaded a trial version of Mac SWF Video Converter, but this seems to make mp4s with black backgrounds...  I couldn't see any way to maintain the transparency (and of course Instant Alpha doesn't work on video files)
    - I can generate single animation frames in Adobe Illustrator then use Preview to combine them into animated GIFs, but Keynote will not import the result with a transparent background (yes, I can *make* them with a transparent background, but Keynote renders it solid white on import...)
    - I can convert the animated GIF to a QT movie (using GIF2MOV), but then I lose the semi-transparency on the shapes themselves.
    - I could place each of my Illustrator-generated animation frames onto a separate Keynote slide and have them auto Transition with no Effect – so use Keynote itself as the animation software – but for a halfway decent smoothness in the animation, we're talking a lot of frames and this approach seems pretty inefficient to me...  Not to mention a pain to do (as the image on each slide has to be independently aligned...  take me for ever!)
    For a relatively simple visual effect, this appears to be implausibly difficult to do...    Unless someone out there can see another way of doing it...
    Many thanks for any suggestions.

    Interesting idea...  I managed to achieve the effect I was after (I'll explain how below) only to realize that what I was actually aiming for was even harder than I had realized...
    What I am trying to animate is changing ethnic "territories" over time in South East Asia. These are complicated little shapes that merge into one another and shift about all over the place. As I am dealing with historical territorial (or perhaps more accurately, "distributional") data, I project it onto a purely physical map of Asia that has no modern political boundaries (as they are irrelevant). But this also means (if you are not so good at geography) that your normal visual reference points have gone, and for my students (French university-level language students, not geography majors) I'm sure that the result can be a little difficult to assimilate.
    For the past few years, I have been happily fading different, often visually disjunct arrangements into one another, but I have always been only moderately satisfied with the result: the changes can be hard to track visually, which defeats the whole purpose of displaying them this way...  I wanted the shapes to flow without interruption (like blobs of wax in a Lava lamp! - Theres an image for you!) – to be visually coherent.
    I began therefore thinking about morphing, and Flash animations...
    ...and ran into all the problems that the tiff between Apple and Adobe has currently left us with. (Don't you like the play on words there... tiff... )
    I gave up on trying to animate just the transparent blobs, with a view to overlaying the animation on a static blank map in Keynote, and instead tried animating the whole lot, background map and all, using Adobe Illustrator. The process involves Illustrator's blend tool, and exporting to .swf, then recapturing the .swf files with Snapz Pro X in .mov format, which allowed Keynote to import them.
    BUT! The result was still not what I wanted (picky, eh). Illustrator's blend tool does a superb job of translating any form into any other, no matter how complex, but groups of humans moving over land don't move like that! For instance, a circluar region moving to a coastal region, when "morphed" will progressively adopt the shape of the coastline before reaching it, which is just silly. It looks as if the population being represented distribute themselves to neatly match the coast when still about 500kms away (and over the space of several generations). Call me stickler, but it doesn't look right. It isn't right, and it's not what I need...
    Sure, any such representation is a vast oversimplification in any case, but superimposing such a specifically impossible visual trait onto the presentation runs counter to the whole idea of doing it for me. It should be iconically plausible (even if not accurate).
    So... I'm in a pause...  Looking to understand animating shapes better...
    I like your screen shot idea tho'. I will have to try it out...
    Cheers,
    Colin

  • Creating animations with transparent backgrounds?

    I'm running into some problems when using After Effects to create animations with transparent backgrounds for Keynote...
    I use animated gifs and short quicktime movies with uniform backgrounds as source files, use color keying to take out the backgrounds, preview them to see if they look OK, render the results as RGB+alpha, and... they don't show up as transparent in Keynote. They work in Powerpoint, however. I've tried outputting as .mov, as .gif, as premultiplied vs straight alpha... no joy. Can someone explain (or point me to an explanation) of how Keynote differs from other programs in its handling of transparency? What am I missing?

    Using a TYPE_INT_ARGB BufferedImage worked beautifully. I had played around with Image for hours, but it never occurred to me that BufferedImage would be needed. :)
    many, many thanks,
    Steven

  • Keynote 3.0.2 unexpectedly crashes

    When I try to launch Keynote directly or double clicking a Keynote file, I get an unexpected crash. Tried from another OS X account and had no problems.
    I tried deleting preferences from ~/Library related to Keynote but still no resolution.
    Suggestions?

    In your inaugural post, you said that you had trashed the Keynote preferences. Try it again (if a replacement were ever generated). Make sure Keynote isn't running when you do. I'd probably also restart the machine and run Permissions Repair from Disk Utility.
    Another possibility is that you've got some interference from a 3rd-party application -- maybe one that was installed prior to your OS update (and is supposed to work in the background with Keynote).
