Background job in a Particular APP server

As said above it is generally not possible. Since your client most obviously doesn't like graphical background I would recomend storing data as till now, but show it with your own report in more userfriendly way. For example:
- as ALV Grid
- in excel with use of OLE either as embedded in SAP or new window (check transaction OLE for example)
- with use of webdynpro

Has anyone put the RAR Background Job Spool on a different server?

We are on GRC 5.3 SP 13.
Has anyone put the RAR Background Job Spool File Location (assigned in the Miscellaneous configuration section) on a server different than the one that the GRC Frontend/Java system is on?
I currently have it assigned to a folder on the GRC server, but it is running out of space. I am having a problem getting the users to delete old reports as they say they need to keep them for internal Audit controls. They are also resisting downloading the reports (more work for them). I have been told that we cannot easily increase the file space on the GRC server (would basically have to purchase more storage and rebuild the server).
I was thinking about moving the folder over to our virtual storage area, were file size can be more easily expanded. I haven't found any documentation that says the folder has to be on the GRC server, but I also haven't seen any examples of where it has been put on a different server.
Has anyone done this, and did you run into any problems?

I got your point. Probably there's no recommendation about this, because the recomended practise is to delete or archive the spools as suggested in note : Note 1511027 - Periodic clean up of spool files
If you have a requirement to keep these files "online", I think the option to save them to a network drive is fine. I haven't tried it for this specific scenario. You have to take into account:
- Specific user to connect to FileServer
- Availability of the FileServer. If the FS is down, the RAR job will cancel.
- Performance. I mean, write to a local disk is not the same to write to a network drive. This point is very difficult to measure, because it depends on a lot of things like network speed, server load, etc.
Maybe someone has already implemented it and gives you more hints.

Those are workflow related jobs.
> NON SAP USER UPLOAD
This is a job name and not the program name.

Scheduling jobs in different app server

Hi all,
Does anyone knows how to schedule a background job in a specific app server, by using FM JOB_SUBMIT / JOB_CLOSE?
I've analysed SAP documentation for these FMs and it says that the parameter EXTPGM_SYSTEM can be used to inform the app server in which the program will be ran. However, it seems to be for external programs and my requirement is just to set a abap report to run in a specific app server.
SAP documentation says:
EXTPGM_SYSTEM Parameter
Name of the host system on which an external program is to be run. You must supply a value for this parameter.
Note: You must specify both the name of an external program and the name of the system on which it is to be executed.
As I don't have an external program, just the abap report, I'm not sure I can use such parameter to schedule the job at the desired app server.

there is another program which people uses to read the generated files. As per the server load balancing, some output files are being created in server A, and some in server B. With this parameter, the output files would be generated only in server A.
So, Bryan, that does make sense.
So, you mean I should consider only JOB_CLOSE in order to inform target system? Should I ignore the external program parameters in JOB_OPEN?

Performance issues-assigning background jobs to a designated server

Hello all, we have been having peformance issues in our production enviorment and were entertaining the idea of running all our our background jobs on a separate/designated server. Has anyone had any experience with this and if so any insight on how you did this would be appreciated? Thanks.

I suppose your performance issues are then for the online users? In general, the best option should be to distribute the workload as much as possible, to avoid performance problems for online users as well as background jobs.
I agree with Atish, this is something for Basis people. Ask them (hopefully that's not you to look at their application server settings. I know where I used to work before they had set up the system so only a certain part of the dialog processes could be occupied by background jobs. I am sure SAP has a lot of parameters that can be tweaked, possibly also with time-dependent settings?

Schedule a Background Job to Available Free Application servers

There is a requirement to develop a Wrapper program,which needs to schedule Background jobs by checking all the available free application servers and assigning it to them.
For Eg: If there are 5 application servers in LIVE system,Then this program needs to find free application server's which will submit the job to that particular free server

Missing App server in GRC Analysis Engine Daemon Manager

We have two app servers for our GRC AC 5.3.The Analysis Engine Daemon Manager(http://<host>:5<nn>00/sap/CCADStatus.jsp) lists only one of the app servers .If I try the URL for the Daemon manager using the URL with app1 or app2 it lists only the background job workers and web services workers for the app1 only and not the app2.I checked the entry for table VIRSA_CC_CONFIG which has entry for the first app server ('107', 0,http://app1:5<nn>00/webdynpro/dispatcher/virsa/ccappcomp/BgJobStart', 'BgJobStart URL').Do I need to add the other URL for the other app server also.If yes how.If any one has faced this issue please help me.Your help is greatly appreciated.

Since the Instance number (i.e. <nn> ) is a mandatory part of the URL so the URL for two app. server should be different. But first of all what is the necessity for keeping two different Instances (Java) for GRC AC? One is enough with proper hardware and system parameter sizing - right?
Also, the Batch Jobs are not App server specific stuff.. so it is not correct to say that there are Jobs from only one App server and not from the other.

Initial workflow runs on WFE, then APP server, loses dependency?

I'm still having issues with a WFE deployment to a farm with a WFE, an APP, and a SQL server. I'm trying to get my head around it. Workflow timer jobs run on the APP server, in accordance with Microsoft recommendations.
User adds a list item
When he / she submits their request, an Update workflow is kicked off -
this part of the workflow I believe is still running on WFE because I see my printed messages in the ULS logs on the WFE
If the request to update a list item is approved, the workflow kicks off a timer job.
The SharePoint timer service then picks up the job on the APP server - I know this because I see my printed messages on the APP server instead of WFE.
Submitted request passed on to a database on a different server.
Getting the right solution has been challenging as I've been struggling to ask the right questions. I've confirmed that the SharePoint 2010 Timer Job is started on both servers with same account. I'm thinking that the wsp deploys something to the WFE,
but not to the APP server. For #5 to happen, that something needs to live on the WFE (unless I want to change the service configuration and add Workflow Timer Jobs on both servers.)
I'm thinking that the solution should be to manually add whatever those files are deployed via the wsp to the APP server as well.

Best practice states that Foundation Web runs on every server in the farm, as solutions must be built around the exception of not running Foundation Web on particular servers. You're encountering that issue, the solution wasn't built to accommodate for
this type of architecture. There is little reason to not run Foundation Web on all servers, including performance.

Background job within another background job

Hello Experts,
I have a BDC program (for BW tcode OLI7BW) which executes by scheduling a number of background jobs. This report works fine when run manually. But doesn't work if it is scheduled as a background job through SM36. The status of the job is shown as finished, but the data is not uploaded.
Is it not possible to execute a background job within another background job?
If it's possible, what could be the possible cause of error?

Hi Radhika,
If you are trying to upload data from a file on ur desktop to Internal table, then background job doesn't work. Always remember GUI means ur front end and all background jobs are run on application server and they dont run w.r.t ur desktop.

Apps server cache refresh

Hi all,
We have SRM server on windows 2003 with sql server 2005, in one of our Apps server service entry in service file for Message server is missing in the PRD.
STMS is showing red for that particular Apps server and it's showing unable to reach TMSADM RFC for the QAS.. so we have added the entry in service file in PRD Apps server.
We have to refresh the cache to make the change effect, with out bouncing the apps server how can we refresh the cache..
Please suggest...

Please check the RFC connection. I think rfc is missing. If rfc is running then configure stms again.

Low disk space while background job?

Hi All,
I am facing problem with background job which is making low disk space. daily few background jobs are running in 2 or 3 application servers with one user. At OS level file srdrr4 size increasing in Directory usr\sap\<SID>\DVEBMGS00\work.
I restarted dispatcher problem is clreared. But the background job running on another application server.
What could be the reason behind this.

Check the trace file of those wp at the os level(more dev_xx) in order to see if this job is filling the log file for example with an error.
Maybe this is the problem....
Z report with problems???? no I don´t think so !!! ahahahahha

Background jobs multiple servers

we have multiple servers in the GRC environment. When you schedule a background job, can you pick which server it will run on? or is it always the server that you are logged into?

Do you mean servers or server nodes? GRC AC does not allow you to pick server/server nodes. If it is server then it will run on the server where you are logged on and if it is server node, it would be picked automatically by the cluster.

System exception while deleting the file from app server in background job

I have a issue while the deleting the file from application server.
I am using the statement DELETE DATASET in my program to delete the file from app server.
I am able to delete the file from the app server when i run the program from app server.
When i run the same report from background job i am getting the message called System exception.
Is there any secuirity which i need to get the issue.

I get all the authorization sto delete the file from application serever.
Thing is i am able to run the program sucessfully in foreground but not in the background .
It i snot giving any short dump also just JOB is cancelled with the exception 'Job cancelled after system exception ERROR_MESSAGE'.

Passing data from a background job to RFC calls in different App server

The program i am working on can be explained in the following steps:
Step A- We use a standard program that is executed as a background job and the standard program obtains some data for a particular scenario.
Step B - The job(standard program) during its execution creates many RFCs executed as dialog work processes on various application servers and processes data.In the RFCs various exits are executed.
We currently write data to database(Z table) in Step A and retreive data in exits in Step B to access the information written to DB(Z table). We want to eliminate writing to database since it consumes time.
Is there any solution apart from writing data to database and retreiving the same.
I am not sure if we can use ABAP memory or SAP memory to access the information in the exits since they are executed on different App servers.

We have not been able to arrive at a solution to the below, any solutions / inputs will be rewarded.
