Background Music Volume for imovie '08

So I've added background music to a few clips. I know how to mute the clip volume (so that you just hear the background music), and I know how to duck (so that you can adjust the clip volume louder or quieter than the background music), but how in the world do you actually lower the volume of the background music? I just can't figure it out.
Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for the tip. It seems to actually work a little different on iMovie '08 though. I just highlight the background music clip then bring up the audio adjustment window and adjust it with the top slider. I noticed on the apple website tutorial the inspector was at the top left like you mentioned, but that's not how it looks on the '08 version.
But then another thing that was messing me up was that I had added the music as a voiceover. Dragging the music file and placing it exactly between or over a clip makes it a voiceover which looks like a green bar below the video clip or clips. So first I had to delete that then grab the music file to the blank area at the right side of the video clip. This strangely put the music at the very beginning of the project, so I had to grab the top left corner of the beginning of the music clip then drag it to where in the project I wanted it. This apparently is called pinning the music. My project is going to be an hour long, so it seems like kind of a tedious thing to do to have to drag the music clip through the entire project to place it exactly where you want it. I'm sure there must be a better way to do this, but for now I'm just glad I figured out my mistake and how to set the background music volume.
Thanks again for the advice though.

  • Background music volume is inconsistent

Why background music volume is inconsistent? The music is low on most of slides as it is supposed to be but suddenly becomes high on some other slides. How to fix it to make them all on the same level? Thank you!

    Hi there
When you insert Background music there is an option to reduce the volume on slides that have audio attached to the slide itself. That's usually where narration goes.
Try editing the Background and DE-selecting the option to reduce volume.

  • Background music volume adjustments

I searched the forum before posting and didn't see my question answered. If you have multiple background music added to a project you can adjust the volume on the first track but subsequent tracks I cannot adjust. Is there a trick to accomplishing this?

Just had a thought (a possible solution I've posted quite frequently lately).
This may or may not help, but try deleting iMovie's preference file. With iMovie closed, in Finder navigate to the file named "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist" in your User (Home) folder Library/Preferences. Drag this file to the Trash. When next opened iMovie will create a fresh file with the default settings. You may need to change some settings to suit your own preference. To do this, in iMovie's Menu go to iMovie>Preferences and make appropriate changes in each of the tabs.
Deleting the preference file can often fix problems with iMovie. The file can become corrupted in some circumstances, such as when iMovie quits unexpectedly or hangs, requiring a force quit.
See this Apple article for more on iLife Troubleshooting Basics (includes a reference to deleting the preference file): http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3249
NOTE: For those using iMovie '09 (version 8), the preference file is named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist".
Hope this helps - it can't do any harm to try it.

  • How do I add multiple background music clips to iMovie

Trying to add multiple background music to iPhoto clips to make a vacation iMovie but when I add a music clip, it shoots right to beginning rather than stopping at the end of last clip added. I've pinned my background music to the first clips but want to add more background music but can't make it stop at the right photo clip. How do I place new background music at the right clip?

I don't use iPhoto (but read your post since it mentioned iMovie which I do use) - anyway, you're not talking about the application iMovie - you're talking about a movie.
So I am guessing, but it may work the same as it would with iMovie:
Can you select the audo clip and  simply drag it to the spot you want it to start? Or, mocw the playhead to the spot where you want it to start then import it?
FYI, it would be helpful to indicate which Mac OS version  you are running - it is not iOS 6 which is for iDevices.

  • Suggestion, Music ratings for iMovie

I have noticed that when looking at your music selection for the movie, imovie does not allow you to rate your music, or view the rating that you may have already placed on them. In my opinion I believe for this to be an important feature when trying to create a sound track for your movie.

Not to be a party pooper but this is by no means a function of a video editor. There is iTunes for rating music. Now, it would be nice if iMovie showed your iTunes ratings but... You can make a playlist of favorite or "starred items in iTunes rather easily.

  • Cs5 make background music dip for voice over

is there a way to do this automatically?

You can do this with a dedicated audio editor or in After Effects. Here's a way to do it in After Effects:

  • How can I get the background music from iMovie trailer, "Romance"to be used in another imovie?

Is there any way to download the background music from the  iMovie trailer template "Romance" to be used in another iMovie of greater length than that of a trailer?

In addition to Tom's good advice, another method is to access the audio file in iMovie's package contents folder.
In Finder, in the Applications folder, right-click (or control-click) on iMovie.app and select Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. Open the folder Contents>Resources. In that folder you will find components for each Trailer, including the soundtrack. The file you are seeking is named "SoundTrack - Romance.m4a".
Copy then paste the file to your Desktop (don't otherwise mess with items in package contents folders!). Open the file in QuickTime - it is titled "Love Story FC2". Opening the Inspector in QuickTime (Window>Show Movie Inspector) reveals it as AAC format. If you wish, as Tom indicated, you can Export the file from QuickTime in other sound formats, such as AIFF. If preferred, you can import either the AAC file or the converted file to iTunes (or other audio apps) for use as required.

  • IMovie: When i put in music for the background of my clips, my clips go quieter, but then when i take the music out it goes loud. I tried to edit the music to try and make it go quiet like background music would, but it isn't working?

In iMovie on my new MacBook Pro. I'm editing a video of mine (As i make videos for YouTube), i put in the clips, then i put in background music. But when the music is there, the clips go really quiet. I'm trying to change that but it isn't working, i've edited the clips to make any other sound go quiet on the audio bar, but that hasn't worked either. I've tried to edit the music to go quiet on the audio bar, but that didn't work. Nothing is working!! It's like the music is taking over! You can barely hear the sound of the clips talking. Then after the background music has finished, if there is any clips left over, the clips go really loud!
It's geting me really annoyed, i've tried everything.
Can anybody help? Even suggestions would work!

I'd be posting in the iMovie forum for iMovie help.

  • How do I get the ducking to work for detached audio clips to reduce the volume of background music?

I have detached audio from clips which explains what I am doing in the video clips (they are muted). I also have a song that I want to play at normal volume in the background when there isn't an audio clip in which I am talking and to reduce volume when I am. On the audio clip of me talking I have the ducking checked and set but there is no change in the music volume. Does anyone know how to fix this?

  • Controlling volume of background music

Hello all... So back in IMOVIE 6, when you added a background music to the timeline, you where able to edit the volume of the song where you desired within the timeline. In fact you could lower the song, add a funny clip and then raise the song again. In Imovie 8, I find where you can lower the song per clip picking the ducking music but that affects the complete clip. Is there a way to edit the song so you can edit the song within one clip as to where to lower and where to raise it? Any info appreciated. Thanks again for all the help.

Not sure how garage band works so I will have to figure it out, but ** IMOVIE 8 has taken a step back in my opinion esp. that with Imovie 6 you were able to do all this within one app.
iMovie '08 is not an upgrade to iMovie HD but rather an entirely new application employing a totally different editing strategy. Many of the features formally included in iMovie HD were moved to GarageBand so people who create/render their own animations or content not requiring traditional editing could also make use of the features. These include the creation and inclusion of your own created music, the addition/layering of multiple audio tracks, each with their own wave form rendering to better help synchronize audio with video content, the enhancement/attenuation of equalization by frequency ranges, the application of various enhancing filters, normalization (if it will work with your particular file), applications of effects like echo and reverb, chaptering of content, etc. The basic strategy is to export the edited video in your selected video format and then open the file in GarageBand for audio editing and/or chaptering. The finished audio and chapter text track can then added to the video track in an MOV file container which does not re-compress the video. I like this approach since I do very little editing but do a lot of conversions and chaptering for Front Row, iTunes, iPhone, iPod, and TV use.

  • I am trying to include a number of iTunes tracks to my iMovie project as background music. However, when I drag and drop the tracks into the grey areas between thumbnail pics, they seem to be locking into specific clips

How can I stop this from happening? I simply want to have a number of tracks playing one after the other as background music from the start to finish of my project.

    What version of iMovie?
    What Device?
Have tried to restart, soft reset your device?
What is the video audio source?

  • Can't see my iTunes library when selecting background music for a slideshow

I don't see my iTunes library when I'm selecting background music for a slideshow -- I have tried using iphoto help (seee below) and it didn't work:
"If you don't see your iTunes library:
Quit both iTunes and iPhoto. Relaunch iTunes first, then iPhoto.
If you recently installed iLife software, it's a good idea to open each application in the following order: iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, and then iDVD. Because these applications are integrated to browse and import files from each other's media libraries, this ensures that you will be viewing the most up-to-date versions of your music library, photo library, and movies folder no matter what application you're using.
Recreate your iTunes Music Library.xml file. Quit iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and iTunes. Click the Finder icon in the Dock, and choose Go > Go to Folder. Type "~/Music/iTunes" or "~/Documents/iTunes" and click Go. Drag the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file to your desktop. Open iTunes and create a new playlist by choosing File > New Playlist. Quit iTunes and open iPhoto to make sure you can see your iTunes library when creating a slideshow."
    Any suggestions?

I have this problem also - tried following advice giving from original problem.
My settings are through the what I call the Lug Nut icon - no arrows and no dimple showing on my screen.
Is there some small thing I'm missing here - weird thing is that iDVD allows me to access my iTunes library - no problem.
When I go to Finder it tells it can't find my Music folder??? I can see it in the sidebar .....
Any suggestions - I don't know how to send those screen shots but what a great idea.

  • How can I insert an image into an mov file in iMovie while keeping the background music?

I have a short MOV file movie clip that has background music but one of the images (it's a static element with text) is incorrect. How can I replace the image but keep the backgroup the same? Also what size would the image need to be to properly fit?
