Background Noise Removal Levels Changed to 50%

I've repeatedly encountered an unpleasant problem with the Background Noise Removal feature in Final Cut Pro X, both in 10.0.0 and 10.0.1. If I turn Background Noise Removal on for a clip in the Timeline, and adjust the level to something other than the default of 50% (which creates squarium-like sound - I can't think when such a high setting would be appropriate), I eventually find that FCPX has thrown away all my levels and changed the level to 50% on all clips for which I have enabled Noise Removal. I haven't yet figured out what action makes FCPX throw away my levels (simply quitting and starting again doesn't do it); but this has happened to me repeatedly over the course of the last three months. I've not been able to get satisfactory improvements to audio using the Audio Enhancements. The Hum removal always sounds like reverb is added. The Noise Reduction leaves so much to be desired. And, I'm not sure I understand how to use the "Loudness" effectively (it's never been an effect I've used extensively in Logic or STP — there are much better ways to "master" audio and I *prefer* Multipressor [also in FCPX]).
I use Effects > Audio > Levels > Logic > Adaptive Limiter to lower the noise floor and increase the gain for a quasi – noise reduction (there is also a "Noise Gate" effect for this -- a little trickier) and I can notch out frequency band noises with Channel or Linear Phase EQ. But quite frankly, the very best noise reduction I've ever heard in nearly 20 years of searching is in ScreenFlow. You don't have to use it as a screen capture software, it can be used to "add in" audio/video (New Empty Document) and (phenomenal) noise reduction can be had by *just* turning on Filter: "Remove Background Noise". Any "digital artifacts" are virtually imperceptible (and that's at their default setting of 80%!!). After bringing that audio into FCPX, any "enhancements" is just flat out *for fun*. Apple really needs to license or buy Telestream's noise reduction software. [Export options out of ScreenFlow include ProRes and AIFF/LinearPCM... among others.]
One more thing about the Audio Effects in FCPX: YOU CAN SAVE YOUR SETTINGS AS PRESETS!!!! You can't even do that with video effects!!!!! Almost every audio effect has a Presets: menu and at the very bottom is Save Preset.
For most categories, there are: the Final Cut effects; Logic effects; and Mac OS X effects (these are basically the same as you would find in Garageband) --- stay with the Logic effects!

Audio Background Noise Removal

I am thinking of taking the plunge with CS3 but have quick question re new audio soundbooth bundle. With PP2 I often edit a clip's audio in Audition (from within PP2) - It works well notably background noise removal. Does the soundbooth integration provide a similar easy workflow? Is soundbooth a point and shoot scaled down audition? Can I still use Audition from within PP CS3?

Removing background noise from captured clip

I wanted to edit an audio which was captured with Video also it contains some background noise.Which filter should I try for this in FCP.

I read that tutorial it is nice but I have only Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD not the SoundTrack Pro is there no option in FCP for editing audio I do not have much to edit I have to remove sound of a crow and in another video captured audio is having sound very low without increasing volume it is not possible to listen to it.
So for this any thing that can be done within FCP.
I have only Soundtrack 1.2 which is not professional version.

Removing background noise from photographs

Hello -
I have a handful of photographs that contain background annoyances such as basketball hoops, doors, etc. I am new to Elements 7 and was wondering if there was a simply way to address this issue. Again, I am a newby and not yet thoroughly famliar with the Elements tool set. I've provided an example of what I'm attempting to correct.
If I could get a step-by-step formula, that would be great!

There are many ways to remove unwanted items and this is a whole topic in itself. However since your example has so many things going on in the background and since it is such a great group shot I tried a studio portrait look:
Here's how:
1. Add a blank layer above the picture.
2. Set the Foreground/Background colors (color chips at bootom of toolbar) to light and dark shades of brown.
3. Apply the Clouds filter to this layer to get the portrait-like background. If the cloud effect looks to harsh it can be softened with a Gaussian Blur.
4. Add a Levels adjustment layer above the picture layer but do not make any adjustments, Just click OK.
5. Group the background layer and Levels layer.
6. At this point all you see is the background. Now actvivate the Levels layer and fill with black. This restores the picture.
7. Set the Foreground/Background colors to their white/black defaults.
8. Use the Brush tool with a hard brush and paint with white to reveal the background. If you paint to far and cover one of the persons, switch to black and paint to restore him/her. While painting you can type "X" to toggle between the black and white. Note that for the subject's hair the results looked more natural using a soft brush.
9. I also used the Clone tool to remove some flash spots on the faces and glasses.
10. Finally cropped to a 8x10 proportion.

Removing background "noise" from an interview recording

Hello!
I was wondering if it was possible on Soundtrack Pro to remove continuous background "noise" from a recorded interview? An example would be someone clicking a pen or a tapping his foot during the duration of the interview. Any advice would be extremely helpful.

It can, but what you are describing are not continuous, but points of sound. Continuous refers more to hums and vibrations, things like air conditioner noise or the sound of traffic. That said you can still give it a try. You can also try running the click and pop filter and see what you get.
Regarding these point sources I have better luck removing them with Adobe's Soundbooth. Their cascading frequency display allows you to draw irregular shapes around sounds like these and then extract them without disturbing the other sounds around them.

Can Logic plug ins remove background noise from interview?
A friend with an important interview recorded in noisy conditions has asked me to help remove background noise - never done this technically.
Is there a Logic or third party plug in that would could remove background noise from a spoken word interview? Have tried EQ which improves the sound slightly but not a solution.
Anyone with specialised knowledge of this sound editing operation?

There are several 3rd party denoisers, they mostly work by first 'learning' the noise footprint of the audio, for which it is best to record a few seconds of silence (with an open mic).

Addit:
Is it that background noise (traffic, talking etc) drowns out the words? Then you'd probably have more luck with (radical) eq-ing and/or notch filtering to find the most dominant frequency range of the speaker in relation to the background noise.
As an interviewer myself I will point out that even with a small disctaphone you need to have some awareness of how the microphone picks up things. As soon as you nead to lean towards whoever you're talking to, just to make sure you're audible, the dictaphone on the table is probably recording mainly ambient noise, the interview being part of that. This is especially a problem when interviewing in a busy public space.

PrE has a few Effects, that might help, but an Audio-editing program is much, much better. I use Adobe Audition, but the free Audacity is pretty handy.

Remove Background Noise

Im trying to remove some background noise (pool sweeper clicking) in a video documentary of my mother-in-laws life (has cancer).
It is a really annoying sound (clicking) I have tried to set a noise print and remove it but i cant seem to get a print of just the noise because she is talking all the time.
I am a new-bee to sound track and I'm unsure if I am doing the right thing. is there anyone that can give me some idea on what i would need to do?
Any Help / Tutorials would be greatly appreciated.

If there are various sounds in the background, the noise and ambient print may not work so well as it covers too broad a range of tones. You might try a very narrow EQ reduction, trying to find the frequency the click is at. You probably won't be able to get rid of it completely, but you may be able to reduce it some.

Removing background noise CS5

Within my Premiere Pro project I extracted audio to soundbooth and used the Clean Up Audio > Capture Noise Print to reduce background noise.
I set the Noise Reduction to 100% and Reduce By 30db which is what sounded best.
It did indeed removed the background noise but made the audio as if it was coming out of a can.

Removing background noise on only one of two tracks

Hello and thank you in advanced for your help. I am new to STP but well versed in FCP. I've recently discovered the wonderful feature of removing background noise in my video clips.
I'm having trouble with one instance though: I have footage shot with a microphone into only one channel of the camera. In FCP, I highlight that channel of audio and "send to" STP just as I have other clips. This time, however, no matter what I seem to try, both left and right audio channels show up in STP and I can't seem to separate them in order to remove the hiss from only one channel.
If I proceed as normal and select a portion of the hiss to set as "noise print" I can only select both tracks, not only the track I want. Probably a matter of a simple button, but I don't know STP well enough and the manual was no help. Anyway, continuing with the process to "reduce noise" and adjusting the parameters I hear almost no difference when turning the filter on and off.
I'm not sure if I've explained my scenario the best, but I'd appreciate some assistance.

Eric,
Make sure the stereo file is open in the Editor as an Audio file. Click inside the editor window area and move your mouse pointer up to the top of the left channel's window border. If done correctly a tiny "L" will appear. This lets you know you can select the left channel, or portions of it.
Do the same for the right channel. However instead of moving the mouse pointer to the top area of the window, move it to the bottom of the Right channel's pane. Look for the tiny 'R."
Proceed as normal: Set a noise print, adjust parameters, and process. You'll find only the selected channel will be processed.

HELP! "Reduce background noise" changes from audio clip to clip, even though the percentage is the SAME. At my wit's end...

I am working on a lengthy editing project and am near tears at this point. Any and all advice would be deeply appreciated.
I am using a2012 MacBook Pro running Mavericks (10.9.5) and iMovie 10. I have been using the "reduce background noise" feature in iMovie 10, with movies where audio is detached, and I have a series of clips stitched together (the result of editing, or adding voiceovers). I'll add 4% reduce to the first clip, and it sounds great. I do the same to the second clip and it sounds as though the setting is at 100% — even if it's at 0%. In other words, the audio is really distorted.
I have tried relaunching iMovie and the MacBook itself, to no avail. The first clip is fine, all those that follow sound horrible, no matter how I change the setting.
Again, any and all advice or suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks!

I'm not sure if anyone is going to read or respond to my plea, but just in case, I thought I'd better update. I went into our local Verizon store today and explained my problems. I was nervous to do so because I didn't purchase my phone there and didn't know if they'd refuse to help based on that fact. The local store of a competing carrier will not help you if your phone wasn't purchased in their store.
What I found out was that my method for pulling the battery was wrong. I didn't realize the phone needed to be turned on when you did that. I did it the correct way and now most of my problems are gone. The one problem it is still having is not being able to update from 2.2.1

Lessening background noise when Amplifying a sound file (post noise reduction)

I have a video I have been tryng to clean up, that was filmed in an environment with some amount of background noise.
I managed to get the audio cleaned up to a leveI was happy with (but still retained a minimal amount of almost unoticable noise to keep the voise still sounding ok).
It sounds fine and perfectly loud in headphones but on some computer speakers even turned up to full volume you can barely hear it. (in the future I will try to film with a higher volume)
I attempted a few different methods to Amplify the sound slightly but this also increases the reminant of background noise.
Along with the basic Amplify, and Normalise I have also tried using a Hard Limiter (I don't know if I was doing it right though as it also increased the Background noise)
Can someone provide any pointers to only amplify the Voice and not the background noise? or possibly even suggest a way I can clean up the reminant background noise without causing the voice to become hollow and Tinny? Obviously redoing the Noise removal process just makes the voice more Hollow.
In the future should I Amplify first and then run the noise removal?

In Audition, Noise Reduction always seems to work best if applied in small steps, with different settings for each. The setting that makes absolutely the most difference is the FFT size you use. The thing to do at the outset is to use the default setting (4096 I think) but don't take too much off with that. Then change the FFT size to the maximum setting, take a new noise print from the results of your previous pass, and take the rest off with this setting. By doing this, you'll find that you can take away more noise before artefacts start to creep in.
It doesn't actually matter about the level of your signal when you apply NR, but to be sensible about it, in order to be able to monitor the results effectively, you should normalize it first, to around -1 or -2dB. The concept of amplifying a signal without amplifying the noise in it implies making the dynamics non-linear, and whilst that's possible to a degree with the Dynamics Processor, it's generally not a good idea - it makes everything seem completely unnatural-sounding.
